Star Trek Director's Editions

Are they going to do a Star Trek V: The Final Frontier? Is Shatner going to do the commentary? Is anyone going to buy it?

I’ll wait a few months and pick up a copy for free with 25 litres of gas at my local Shell station.

I just got the DVD of Wrath of Khan (we had a thread about this a while back) and the commentary track was more annoying than anything else. Harve Bennet didn’t really have any interesting anecdotes, just a lot of vague observations on directing a movie, which isn’t too surprising since he was asked to comment at length on a project he did 20 years ago.

Ah, Ekers, but you got to see the Nephew stuff.
The wonderful observation Montalban made about villians, and his story about the script girl.

I’ll buy it! Listening to Shatner explain that misstep away will be worth the price. If he gets to redo some of the special effects even better, how about missing scenes!

I totally disagree about the commentary track, I found it quite facinating. It beats those done by Lucas and others who spout only about the technical side. (besides if you have Okuda’s written track running with it there is a nice full balance)

God. Don’t make me think about it. For completeness’s sake, I’ll have to pick up a copy…but…

I can just imagine what a Shatner Director’s Cut will be like…redone special effects…and 50 minutes longer… shudder

All the scenes that were cut out! A longer version of the Uhura fan dance! Scotty runs into more things! Wacky highjinks as things on the ship don’t work! Extra hard core sex scenes between Kirk and a harem of dozens of women from the Planet of the Supermodels!

Speak of the devil. Today, ol’ Wild Bill himself was a guest on the Todd Mundt Show. He spent most of the show talking about death. From the way he talked, it sounded like someone had handed him a copy of The Tibetian Book of the Dead. And this seems like as good a time as any to mention The First Church of Shatnerology!

You may not be far off. Currently in the Trek rumor mill is talk of redoing the “god planet” sequence with CGI like they did for the Vulcan desert scenes in ST:TWAK.

:smack:

Make that ST:TMP. not ST:TWAK (which should have been ST:TWOK).

Star Trek V: Special Edition. Now with 63% less suck!

Just so long as they leave in one of the best lines Shatner has ever delivered:

I’d already seen the “nephew stuff.” There wasn’t any footage in the DVD of TWOK that I hadn’t already seen, but I bought the disk anyway just because it’s by far my favourite Trek movie.

This is likely to be the case of any DVD of a movie more than 15 years old (i.e. before the home video market really took off). There won’t be a lot of extra footage, since nobody bothered to keep it, but you might get a few talk-show interviews that were recorded when the movie was released. Nimoy’s suit, for example, was worth a laugh. I think he had to finish up the interview quickly so he could get back to his day job selling Good Humor ice cream.

The first major movie that threw in extra footage in quantity (that I know of) was Aliens (1984) which had HUGE bonus material included on the laserdisk (proto-DVD) version. I’ll probably pick that one up, by-and-by, so long as all the extras are intact.

The later Trek movies might have some interesting extra footage, but I since I generally disliked all the movies after the fourth one, I can’t say I’m eager to make any more purchases.

What I want to know is, did the Director’s Edition DVD of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan finally fix the most glaring error of the movie:

The lack of a credit for Judson “Bennu” Scott as Khan’s right-hand man, Joachim?

Good question, I’ll have to check.

I know they didn’t fix the part where Joachim, already dead, reflexively closes his eyes when Khan hugs him.

Avenge me, my Aunt Sally!
“You have Genesis”, I said.
“Don’t go into the Nebula!” I said.
Did you listen?
“Shields and sensors will be useless”, I said.
Did you listen?
Now they’ve damaged the warp drive and the fine Corinthian leather, and I’m toast!
Yours is the superior intellect?

I heard ST3 has no deleted scenes in the new Collectors Edition coming out soon.

Nope. He’s still gets no credit. I wonder why?

From IMDb:

You give something away, they’re not obligated to give it back.

I’m guessing that Judson got a new agent soon thereafter?

On this, I have no information. Other than the notable use of the “then-” construction when referring to the person responsible.
