Okay - Here's some TMI - Tell me about Lube...

I used to sell sex toys at home parties, because of this some people like to bring their questions and issues to me as some kind of pseudo-expert.

Here’s the deal - she is an older, post-menopausal woman and “enjoys” one of the “gifts” that this age brings - extreme dryness.

She has tried a couple of different kinds of lube (water based, no added sugar, medical quality), but finds they have all resulted in UTIs (urinary tract infections).

Anyone have any other ideas? I suggested a grapeseed oil one but it didn’t help…

Well, this is probably the most disappointed I’ve ever been after reading a post about lube. Eww. Should’ve listened to the TMI warning.

There are prescription vaginal suppositories for this problem. Could she ask her Gyne?

(The reason I know this: I once had a client bring in a fecal sample from her bird. She recycled one of her own prescription vials for this purpose. I became intrigued by the drug name on the label, so I checked the PDR. Moral: remove all labels before recycling. My employees forever referred to the client (who was a bitch) as “the dried up bitch”)

Instead of a water-based lubricant, try a silicone based lube. I recommend Wet Naturals Silky Supreme (link is work safe.) Condom safe, not silicone toy safe unless you test it - put a drop onto the toy, wait 24 hours, if there’s no reaction (usually discoloration) then it’s safe to use with a silicone toy.

Has she considered the posibility that it may be something other than the lube causing the infection?

I have found that many times, older folks don’t like to drink liquids-particularly at night- because it disturbs their sleep. Also, some UTI’s can be caused by intercourse introducing bacteria into the relatively short female urethra. I wonder if her UTI’s are caused not so much by the lubricant, but by a lack of liquids and a lack of a post-coital urination…especially if she tends to have intercourse shortly before going to sleep?

Topical estrogen can help; she should talk to her doctor.

Seconding topical estrogen (cream). Should be used on a regular basis, but I’ve even heard of some women who use it AS a lube, as well. It’s actually quite…slippery… I’m only 41, but after my hysterectomy, I found the skin was thinner and more prone to tearing. The topical estrogen helped with that.

I’d also suggest sillicone lube. It doesn’t dry up as easily as water-based lubes so it might work better for her.
