…a bunch of punk-ass bitches. Anyone been to ZDNET lately and seen what Lars Ulrich is doing?
Check this shitty shit out:
What a bunch of bullshit man. It’s like they’re saying “We’re rich as hell already. We think it’s fucked up that we have so many fans and so many good songs that people love so much that they want to share them with everyone.”
I used to like Metallica, they used to be one of my favorite bands. I used to defend them when I heard some metal-head purist say they were sell outs. Now I should get a big ol’ ass “I told you so!” from all those purists. Because they are sell outs. Worse, they have become the legal eagle corprate assholes that we all know and hate.
First, interesting that you chose to put a Weezer lryic in your post.
Second of all. Why shouldn’t they be entitled to the profits from the work they did? They have worked long and hard to be where they are.
I don’t think that the ammount of money they have should have anything to do with being stolen from. Are you saying its okay to steal from the rich. Just because they are rich? A modern day robin hood if you will?
I would be more inclined to side with you… IF they gave those mp3’s away for free. They don’t. You can listen to them for free on their website. If you wanted to share the music with your friends, you can type http://metallica.com into your friendly browser and get all kinds of music. Nuff said.
No, not enough said, retard.
It doesn’t cost anything to be a member of Napster.
I’m not saying that it’s okay to steal.
What I AM saying is that I don’t think that people sharing their possesions is not stealing.
I AM saying that I don’t agree with the idea that Napster is stealing.
Are you a member of Napster? Do you have any experience with them? Do you know what you’re talking about?
I put a Weezer lyric in my post? How ironic, more so because it was accidental.
They are entitled to profit from what they have created. And they do reap tremendous profits from their work. But this is a blatant slap in the face to all their fans. It’s not like they’re being plagiarized or something.
People are getting to enjoy Metallica’s music. Oooh, what a crime, they are listening to music without paying for it. Let’s sue the radio, too. Let’s sue someone who watches MTV at their friends house without paying for it. Let’s sue someone who borrows their friend’s Metallica CD and and copies it onto a minidisc. Let’s sue everyone who goes to a party and hears a Metallica song without paying for it.
Let’s all be a bunch of big whiny hypocritical bitches…
Napster isn’t stealing. They washed their hands long ago. They did the legal homework.
Yes I’ve used napster, I’ve robbed even struggling bands blindly.
With that set aside I do know what I’m talking about. Do you know how little the band makes off of each CD sold? Do you know how the profits are split? Let alone the fact that they have to split the money four ways at the band level.
Did you even bother to think about the staggering amount of money those men are losing? That is a hell of alot of money. I would be a little disappointed if people were robbing me blind like that.
I just seem to be able to see where the band is coming from.
Yes let us all be a bunch of hipocritical bitches… If someone was stealling more than 300,000 full cd’s worth of music from your bank account I don’t think you’d be happy either.
No I don’t know what weezer lyric it was, I don’t own any weezer CD’s, I don’t really like weezer, in fact I think they kind of suck.
What the hell does that have to do with anything.
Listen to yourself, man. If bands make so monumentally little from CD sales, then why is it such a big deal to not buy the CD. Is it that a tiny split four ways profit is better than nothing? Or is it that they make more than you think from said albums. Or is it that a lot of smalls equal one big? Or maybe that since they make so little from album sales that they need every little bit to keep them in 5 car garages and sailboats and yachts and private recording studios and having no need for a real job.
Putz.

CD sales is not Metallica’s only source of income. They make money from concerts, various merchandise, music videos, miscellaneous promotions and contests, soundtracks, etc., etc., etc…
They wouldn’t make bank as well though would they?
If a cd is worth so little wouldn’t you want to get as many of them sold to add up the profits?
Yes a penny isn’t worth much either… however… would you be able to give a penny to each of those million+ of ‘fans’ caught stealing from metallica?
I dunno about you but a million is a fairly big number to me. I’m not real sure your situation but I certainly could not afford to give away a million dollars that you deem so trifle.
Say it ain’t so. Weezer is pretty good if you listen
As for this Metallica, as I also posted to the Napster thread, I think they’re being a buncha bitches. Today’s move to attempt litigation against users of Napster is one step further into the Abyss of their character(Let’s throw Dre in this one too, because he’s also said he will do the same).
Lars is a scumbag, a greedy one too. Dre is a loser, and is also being sued for copyright infringement.
This whole thing is totally ridiculous. The RIAA and the bands had better get their shit together and learn to look forward to the future when they can make revenue off of this. Napsterdoesn’t really eat into these guys profits, either. The royalty on an MP3 would be a fraction of a cent.
SPread that out over thousands of bands, managers, holding companies and the RIAA(Et. Al), and they’ll make maybe a dollar per DAY, not per album.
Actually, Napster in particular (and the whole MP3 thing in general) is probably the most promising development that there has been in popular music for some time.
By allowing the effectively free (monetarily and otherwise) distribution of their “songs”, “artists” like Mettalica and Dr. Dre will stop producng any more “work”.
In a generation or so, when the current “bands” have died out or gotten disgusted and gone home, there will be nothing but “classic rock” (and other “classic” music), and web sites filled with the stylings of garage bands and school choirs. Nobody but a few parents, classmates, an friends will bother with the latter.
anyway, the numbers that speak of what the bands actually make from thier music needs to be shared with the fans in order for them to understand what is really happening to them, (they are being raped), and the whiners who were getting the music for free and are now afraid they cant need to accept that they are taking for granted what the bands have been creating for their enjoyement. stop supporting the bands then, and maybe the bands will disappear, and then what? why would anyone want to become a musician then? perhaps eventually we won’t even have music?
i know thats very far fetched, but if you don’t see that there is yin and yang to this, you can’t understand why the band is angry. They don’t need the money, they need the respect. They are sensitive little saps, and they feel hurt. They need a big reassuring hug from their fans that everything will be ok. so please. do your part. hug the band.
Agreed, it will change the industry no doubt in a good way…
Nope, they’ll figure out a way to make money come hell or high water…just look at the nature of the suits!
Umm…no, and I think that’s one of the lamest things I’ve heard in a long time. When your generation dies off, it will leave behind it the legacy of people in my generation who will still listen to the same types of music they listen to today, albeit more mellow(Can you imagine us on Geritol, in our wheelchairs listening to Limp? :D)
By then, there will be a new generation of even more offensive(to our ears that is), genres of music. We will probably be just as jaded as you and say something just as out of wack.
Don’t know much about that Napster/MP3 business. I’d rather just bitch about how Metallica has sold out and become sucky.
This band was so damn relevant in the “Kill 'Em All,” “Ride the Lightning,” “Master of Puppets,” “Garage Days Revisited” days.
Then “And Justice For All” came out. They broke their solemn vow never to make a music video – although “One” was pretty good.
Then The Black Album came out. Some good songs, but they seemed to be creeping closer to mainstream. That smarmy and just-plain-bad love ballad “Nothing Else Matters” sent a shiver down the spine of any real old-school Metallica Fans. (Can you picture Cliff playing bass on that?)
Then the sell-out became complete. They listened to some fucking bean-counter somewhere, cut off all their hair, stopped wearing jeans and T-shirts and now they look like some pussy lounge act. (You just KNOW that Ulrich was the driving force behind it, too.)
Their music has primarily blown ever since. That recent thing they did with a symphony orchestra was just ridiculous, and sounded like shit. It reminded me of Spinal Tap’s “Stonehenge” in its pompous pretentiousness.
Yeah I don’t think cliff can play a damn thing being dead and all.
Maybe they just lost their teenage angst. Do you have kill’em all? If you do look at their picture, they’re just kids.
Do you expect them to be angry ALL the time? You’d think they’d freak out and kill people if they held that much anger inside…
Sounds just like they’re getting older to me, last I saw hetfield was still wearing jeans and tshirts. So were the rest of them at the last metallica concert I went to…
Let them do what they want. Its better than fan based bands like shudder those boy bands.
I’d rather they do what they want
(sorry about the penny error, but I think the point is the same)
Lars has ALWAYS been a total asshole and his band has been musically irrelevant for a decade.
I weighed in on the other Napster thread as being completely on Napster’s side - even though I’m a musician in an active local band just dying to get signed and actually MAKE some money doing what I love.
It has NOT been proven that the service is “stealing” possible CD sales from the band. It’s effect may be quite the opposite. You download a tune, love it, and then buy the CD to get the whole album, artwork, liner notes, etc. I bought a Fu Manchu album (The Action is Go!) this way.
It would be biting irony if this action by the Danish Tennis-Boy actually causes the group to lose more fans then they’re alleging Napster is taking from them. I sure hope it does.
If Metallica album sales are negatively effected by Napster, then the main party loosing money is not the band, but their record label. Lars is clearly a record executive’s bitch.
Its true that this band doesn’t make a whole lot from CD sales, but keep in mind that without ENOUGH CD sales the band disappears. Why? Because its no longer profitable for the record company to hold onto them. In this cut throat business where the trend has been to create, hype, exploit and dump one hit wonders, a long standing band like Metallica has to keep its record sales up or lose its record contract. One might argue that Metallica could probably do OK without the record company at this stage in their careeer, but don’t be fooled. Said Company is fronting huge expenditures for radio time (yes that actually COSTS huge money in addition to requiring major connections), touring expenses, legal expenses, publicity costs, CD production and pressing, in short just about everything - that’s where a significant amount of the CD revenues go. Undercut those CD sales by a few million (because fans got the music for free on line) and you give the record company that much more reason to can them. So before passing judgement on them for being sellouts, consider that they might be fighting for their very artistic survival!
