I just want to commend that OP for sticking the “somebody I politically disagree with said something stupid” thread in the Pit instead of Great Debates.
I’ve always found that you could turn off Olbermann after about 45 seconds. That’s long enough for him to make his point; after that it’s usually just variations on the same theme with increasing levels of vitriol.

I’m surprised MSNBC has kept him for so long. I mean it’s one thing to be subtly in the bag at that network (read: Matthews), but Keith is so over the top and acerbic… he must get awesome ratings for them to keep him around.
He’s pretty mild in his views compared to Hannity, Beck, et al, for the most part. Still, putting him on the air just gives the right wing ammo for their whining about how biased the media is. He serves no useful function, although he can be pretty funny on NBC’s football preshow.

The problem with attention whores (on both sides of the political spectrum) is that when people stop feeding their habit they feel compelled to exhibit even more outlandish behavior in an attempt to bring their audience back. It usually just makes them look more pathetic.
