(Old) 24 Hours of Labor- A Labor Day MMP

In MMP parlance, an RDOS is a “Retired Drain on Society”.

So that describes most of us as people, as our contribution to the economy, and what our activities of the day consist mostly of: pointless diversions and leisure, perhaps mixed with recreational libations & such.

Best damned job I ever had. And I had some pretty nice jobs as jobs go.

We’re finally having our “dog days” here. August had been remarkably heat-wave free, with no 100 degree days. However, we’ve had three days of upper 90s, and there’s still September to be got through. For what it’s worth, the weather app shows that we’re cooling down to the upper 70s in a couple of days. Yay!

Today we must move some furniture so that we can scoot a big area rug back into place. It “walks” out of position every few weeks and has to be repositioned. I also must scrub the downstairs bathroom, which I think I’ll do as soon as I close this damn laptop and get up and move.

RDO=Regular Day Off, which is used for people who have alternate work schedules, such as a 5/4/9 or 4/10.

RDOS = retired drain on society.

Not a holiday here, and today was the first day of school. They students weren’t in a mood to study so we played English games.

I had been helping SenGirl’s classmate’s family because the father was sick.

We just got word and he just passed this evening. There are three daughters, 11th grade, 9th grade and 6th grade.

I only knew him a year, but he was a really good man.

Good morning all. Up about 5am to micturate then went back to bed until about 7am, so should be well rested. Nothing much planned, if any labor gets done it will be in kitchen which is a bit of a mess, and maybe a couple hours at the gym, but they are closing at 4pm today. Weather is nice right now, 71F heading to 82F, but 60% chance of rain this evening.

Email has decided to take time off too, I get a message saying:

“Sorry for the inconvenience. We’re performing some maintenance at the moment. We’ll be back online shortly!”

So hopefully that will return in a little bit.

And looks to be a busy morning on the MMP, lets see how the week is starting out…

Sensei, so sad that those kids have to lose a parent this early in life. My condolences to them and you.

flyboy, haven’t been in a church for 30 years except for one Xmas eve with my brother 2 years ago (Not counting various old churches visited during vacations). Hope it works out for Mr.s LA and you.

Yeah, sometimes foreign holidays are better…when I lived in Abu Dhabi we got at least 3 days off for Eid Al Fitr, IIRC.

shoe, somebody has one heck of a pizza party…

Cervaise, never been to France except for one day in Paris, but may have to do a comprehensive European vacation one of these days…those are gorgeous pictures.

Cupcakes, it’s about a 35-49 minute drive to get to the Tennessee border since the lottery isn’t legal in Ali-bama. Still, $1.1 billion..

Taters, walked to school all the way through my senior year, my dad worked nights and wasn’t home by the time my brother and I left for school and there were no buses in the district. Elementary and Junior High weren’t bad but High School was almost 2.5 miles away and that was not fun in the winter; at least there were sidewalks along the way. Mom often picked us up after school, though, so I was half-spoiled…

Where I live now, it seems like most of the schools are build right on main travel roads, so most kids get driven or take the bus.

FCM, think a garden would look pretty nice.

Flipper, good news on the screenplay, hope it gets picked up and produced soon.

Pilot, I predict a most happy reunion in a little while…

And time to get a little snack prior to my usual Jersey Mike’s #3. Take care all.

I am sorry to hear this, and sorry for the daughters who have lost an important part of their lives. My condolences to them, and to you.

flyboy the only time I set foot inside a church is to go and look at pretty windows and stuff. I hope Mrs LA finds the kind of spiritual home she’s looking for.

Taters I was lucky, we lived right across the road from my infant and junior schools. Secondary school was just short of 3 miles away and I was also just outside the catchment area for the school bus. I often managed to squeeze onto it, otherwise it was the normal service bus for me. Or I walked. I remember walking to and from school in the snow because the bus wasn’t running but we didn’t get “snow days”, that was unheard of!

I’m sorry for the loss of your friend. Such a sad thing for his young family and those who knew him.

flyboy, about the only things I’ve been in church for in the past 35 years have been marryins and buryins and even those are increasingly not held there.

I caught the school bus at the public elementary school about a block and a half from home most of my school life. the RC school where I went through eighth grade contracted with the local school district to haul our butts to school rather than run buses to the outer areas. A couple of other private schools did the same. Most years, there were less than a dozen of us combined. After that, I caught the regular bus for public HS at the same stop, since we were all going to the county seat.

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. I’m all sinusy this morning, plus, I’m going to have to find a dentist sooner rather than later I think. The minor dental issue from late July is back and is messing with my blood sugar. It really doesn’t hurt, but there’s a lump there in my cheek.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

We’ll be going to a banner display over the freeway from one to two today.

I’d bought a small bottle of Italian dressing at the ‘dollar’ store the other day. Yesterday I put three (bone-in, skin-on) chicken thighs and the dressing into a zip-top bag. (The other two thighs are tightly-wrapped in cling-wrap, and are in another zip-top bag in the freezer.) I think I’ll fire up the barbie this afternoon. (Actually, I’ll bake them in the oven and then finish them over fire.)

My favorite type of Monday - one where I don’t go to work! The weather will also be cooler than normal for this time of year and the sun will only briefly peak out from behind the clouds.

And my confession, Mumpers… I’ve never bought a lottery ticket! Is selecting a Powerball ticket very complicated?

I met my mom at Texas Roadhouse yesterday afternoon for a late lunch/early dinner. They were surprisingly busy (I mean they’re always busy but there was a wait at 3pm) and I’ve wondered if the cooler weather kept a lot of people from going to the lake or if people just aren’t traveling like normal for the holiday weekend. Roadhouse was delicious as always.

@TokyoBayer I’m sorry for your loss, and those are some young ages to be losing a parent.

@dolphinboy Care to share any details about the screenplay? And do you have hope of it getting produced?

FCM is the boat close to being ready? Will you be able to take it out this year or is weather closing in too fast? Also, nice family photo from last week’s MMP.

As it happens, it’s pouring down rain at the moment, so we’re having to adjust our itinerary. Less beach time, and more…

Twice in one morning for me (posting, that is). Decided to get my COVID and Flu shots scheduled and Kroger pharmacy had an opening at 9:30am, so booked it…and found out they hadn’t received their COVID vaccine replenishment yet. They expect it this week, so I’ll make a new appointment for Firday and get shot then. Am finishing my Jersey Mike’s sammich and think I’ll go to the gym so I can celebrate the Holiday with a trip to 5 Guys (love the food but mucho calories/fat) with a semi-clear conscious. E-mail is still down, if it’s still that way after 11am local I’ll give them a call and ask what’s going on, their website does not indicate any interruptions of services.

flyboy, happy protesting!

Nope, you can either fill out a card with the numbers you want or just tell the clerk to ;let the computer pick’em’, long as you have money they’ll be happy to help…

And onward into the day.

Got our saggy asses in gear and got the laundry in the machines early on. Nasty chore is finito, other than sorting and stowing. Gotta make a store run for a few essentials in a bit. The wife ordered dinner delivered, so I’ll pick up something at the store; maybe a California roll. Otherwise a pretty dead day. I didn’t feel like doing exercise with a video, so skipped it.

I’m retired, so mumping and otherwise lollygagging is my job. I’m so busy! Speaking of lollygagging, one of relatives gave me a 3-D puzzle called “The Great Wave.” All the pieces are shaped like ++, with the pluses connected, and they are in white, black, 2 shades of brown, and 2 shades of blue. The only pic of the finished puzzle is tiny. I haven’t a clue what to do. I feel like somebody gave me a bag of atoms, saying, “Make a typewriter.”

I don’t usually play the Parboil on Mondays, but the dang thing is up to a buh-buh-billion again, so maybe it’s worth sending Mrs. Nott out to wait in line at the Kwik-E-Mart. This is one of those times when I really wish I could still drive, so I could go out and do it myself.

Me, a Retired Drain On Society? Eh, maybe. I’m drawing a pension from General Motors, where I paid into a pension plan for 34 years. I’m drawing Social Security, which I also paid into all those years. What I’m getting from SS is somewhat more than I put in, but that can be argued over, by those who like to argue over stuff like that.

This evening, I’m told, we’ll have marinated chicken breast from the profane grill out back.

Fuckin-A.

I endorse this endeavour.

In the “Is your birthday a Big Deal to you?” thread, I posted that the first day of September always makes me quietly happy because it’s the start of my birthday month. So…yay!

Why oh why do some of my neighbors feel compelled to frequently burn things outside?? The only downside to nice weather and having the windows open is that I never know when I’ll suddenly smell smoke…and I do not like the smell of smoke inside my house. I don’t begrudge anyone their fire pit or the right to burn trash or whatever the hell is going on, but it’s not like we live in the country: the houses here are close enough together that the smoke from any back yard fire will impact several neighbors. At least this morning’s incursion only lasted a few minutes.

On a happier note, I’m not working today. It’s good to have one more day of sloth after last week’s funeral and trip to NJ, and also now in the face of Bailey’s IDB diagnosis. I found a support group on FB that has already been helpful, and it’s nice to get to spend one more day at home with the doggy while I continue to read those posts and Google random info. Speaking of whom, the stupid dog never ate her breakfast – which means she hasn’t gotten her meds – so I’ll have to offer her some Pill Pockets and fresh food the next time she wakes up. If it turns out she doesn’t like the new food, I’ll need to try one of the other prescription brands. It could be an expensive month or so, on top of the $1100 I just spent on her. Good thing she’s cute.

Lunch just got delivered: I had a gnawin’ and a cravin’ for the turkey sandwich that I often get from Wegman’s when I work from home, so I had Instacart bring me one (and a few other things). I’ll eat half of it now, and bring the other half to work tomorrow. Time to start my laundry, then relocate to the living room and eat while I binge-watch more Elementary: the next book in a series I like is being released tomorrow, and the next book in another series I like is being released next month, so I need to do some serious TV-watching today before I start reading! :joy:

One of my earliest crushes was on Larry Wilcox (Officer Jon Baker). :two_hearts:

I hope the tip was commensurate!

Aww, I’m so sorry. :people_hugging:

I would have given you the Lego set.

Ha!

Below is the logline and synopsis. When it is truly finished, my next steps will be to submit it to some screenplay competitions to see how well it holds up against others. If it does well, I have some producers I can send it to to see if they’re interested. If that doesn’t work, I’ll hopefully find an agent interested in hawking it around town. As everyone knows, only a small fraction of screenplays are optioned, and an even smaller fraction are made into films. Hope springs eternal.

Logline:

When his youngest son goes missing, a determined police officer searches a remote island off the southern tip of the Philippines in hopes of rescuing him before it’s too late.”

Synopsis:

Twenty-year-old Nate Adams dropped out of college without telling his father. Mike Adams, a respected member of the San Francisco Police Department, hasn’t had a good relationship with his youngest son in a long time. Following the divorce, Mike’s ex-wife moved to Brentwood, California, along with their oldest son, James. Nate was forced to live with his father.

After dropping out, instead of returning home to Mike, Nate moves in with school friends who, unbeknownst to him, are members of a Philippine separatist group. After initially talking to Nate, Mike is unable to contact him. Concerned about his welfare and unaware of his exact whereabouts, Mike hires a private investigator, who informs him that Nate has left the country and traveled to the Philippines with his roommates.

Mike meets with a colleague at the FBI and learns how dangerous the Muslim National Liberation Front is. Worried about what Nate might have gotten himself into, he decides he must go to the Philippines, find Nate, and convince him to return home. Thinking it’s too dangerous for Mike to go alone, his older son James decides to go with him on his quest to rescue Nate and bring him back safe.

HAHAHAHAHA! Another jolly joker!!

With luck, the fuel tanks will be installed this week. FCD also has to install a ground plate on the outside of the hull and uninstall a non-functional transducer that goes thru the bottom, so we’re going to see about having the boat hauled out of the water to get all that done. So maybe 2 weeks at most, then we should be able to get underway. The water system and some of the electrical wouldn’t affect day trips on the river, so theoretically, we could get out before the end of Sept. But before we could go for an overnight anywhere, there’s still much to be done. We’ll be working for many more months, and some work will have to be suspended till spring - like painting.

To be fair, this has been pretty much a major overhaul of all systems, and once the yard gets the fuel tanks in and the system restored, water is the last major project. There are a few smaller electrical issues - like some lights, but the worst of the electrical has been completed. Did I mention this is a 40-y/o boat that was, in some cases, patched together in a less-than-professional manner? In fact, in a downright cheapie manner. Had we known all this, we probably wouldn’t have bought it. But live and learn.

We did Olive Garden soup and salad for lunch, and supper will probably be a bowl of cereal. FCD’s phone will be delivered tomorrow and must be signed for, so I’ll be staying home to receive it. I may get motivated and work in the front yard while waiting for Brown. If I was truly motivated, I’d be out there now. But I ain’t.

FCD looked at the shed ramp - turns out it’s not as bad as I thought - mostly it’s peeling paint that kinda resembled rot. So we don’t have to worry about it for a few more years anyway. But the other deck will be chainsawn apart when we can get Daughter and SIL over to help with the demolition. Before then, I need to remove the clotheslines and the eye bolts and probably cut back the native clematis so we can access all the structure. I’ll put up a trellis in the spring. And I think I have a plan for the 10X16 patch that will be vacated - some crape myrtle and some butterfly bushes as well as an expansion of my veggie patch. And some pavers to break the patches up.

Now, tho, I need to empty the dishwasher, then run the cleaner in it. Off to the kitchen!

Best of luck!

Today began with a bagel place being closed for Labor Day, so we went to a bakery instead. A little walk to balance the sugar content of said breakfast, now home with more coffee. Friend is writing upsttairs; I am writing downstairs. Today I’ll outline the chapter I’m working on, then keep writing it. Friend and I agree that I should finish the draft and send it to my two other readers so I’m getting feedback on the same version she read to see if it correlates.

Flyboy, there was an ice cream counter open with some sad little treats in a case, but no other doors open and what we could see through the windows was equipment and junk.

There’s an ad that’s been popping up on my tablet that starts with a guy saying “If you’re getting older…” Um, dude, anyone who’s not getting older isn’t seeing the ad, unless someone in the afterlife reads over my shoulder.

Looks like I’m losing the dog battle. FCD promises he’ll be responsible so it doesn’t all fall on me like it always has. Pick your battles, right? Dammit. TBD…
