(Old) 24 Hours of Labor- A Labor Day MMP

We’re thinking of going to Indianapolis to have turkey with FCD’s last living aunt. SIL mentioned they may be going to Alabama for a family reunion thing, so we may head west. Still a tad early to decide (November, yanno.)

Lunch has been ingested. Guess I can’t put off cleaning the bathroom any lionger. Dammit.

Got the rent. Now to try for phone and bus passes. Interview tomorrow.

A drizzly Tuesday so far, but that’s fine with me. Temps in the 60s all week, which is also fine with me. Nothing else happening. Very little activity on the road project from what I can see, although I can hear the beeping in the distance, so perhaps they just haven’t gotten to our section yet.

I guess they offered the building manager job to someone, but haven’t heard back yet. Seems odd.

A week from today we go hunting the elusive apple at a farm over by the big river. I’ll probably use the 12 gauge.

I was loading 300 Top Blue, which was a bunch of bulk loads, and the Saturday loader didn’t bother labeling any of the boxes. Plus there were huge Irregs, so 2 of the 3 cars were cubed out. I did my Aldi run, mostly meats, and stopped at Teeter for a Powerball ticket. Now it’s naptime.

As is my compacting yellow bin pickups. Recycling gets heaved on Thursday, weather and holidays permitting.

The online thing is new to me. But it definitely has to be signed for for it to be delivered, because Brown and the cell companies get twitchy over misplaced $1000 phones.

Megamillions is $5 now, but Powerball is still a bargain at $2.

< crosses fingers >

Hope they fix the infection quick.

A 12 gauge would ruin the meat, use your .22 to shoot the stem instead.

Yeah but w the 12ga. you get instant applesauce!

There’s work stuff I should be doing right now, but I’m feeling sleepy from my excellent lunch (a banana, and the other half of the Wegman’s turkey sandwich I got yesterday) and my next meeting isn’t until 2pm so here I am. Lucky Mumpers.

I expected this morning’s traffic to be terrible, but it was actually on the lighter side; going home, though, will likely be a different story. I just have to remind myself that “worse than 2 weeks ago” still isn’t bad!

One of the symptoms of Bailey’s IBD is fairly constant hunger, which hurts my heart but is actually helpful when it comes to her meds: the pills aren’t big, and so far she’s wolfing down two laced Pill Pockets each morning. :crossed_fingers: I’d rather not have to crush the pills and mix them into her food, since I don’t know how they taste and she’s already getting new stuff. Today I increased the old/new mix to 50/50, and on Thursday it will go up to 25/75; she’ll be 100% on the new food starting on Saturday. Waiting to see if it helps will be hard…I want my dog to be better NOW, dammit!

I’m working on two long-term “to do” list items: over the weekend I finally reached out to my yard company about some landscaping cleanup, and this morning my car started bugging me about its next oil change – which isn’t due right away, but I’ve been meaning to bring it to the shop anyway for new windshield wipers and a general lookover (and now maybe a realignment). Hopefully I’ll be able to check both of those things off the list before the autumnal equinox (09/22 at 2:19pm ET).

Awww!

I hope he agrees that the final decision rests with you unless/until his job changes!

And your heels. Don’t forget the stilettos! :high_heeled_shoe:

I paid mine online a week or so ago, but over the weekend I got a “payment failed” notice; I think I managed to typo my bank account number. I’ll fix it the next time I do bills (the tax isn’t due until next month), but I no longer have the paper bill with my special ID so I’m not sure how I’ll be able to log in. I’ll find out this weekend.

Same here! Well, one of my favorite authors: another will have a new book out at the end of next month. I’m looking forward to starting to read this tonight.

What’s the other way you would/could go?

Win-win!

Framed in Death | J.D. Robb

is mine. i have requested thurs. off.

this weekend i finished knitting a throw, i have plans for the new throw and book.

The inland route, through (or around) DC and Richmond. I was stationed in Norfolk when we got married, so for several years we went through the Bay Bridge/Tunnel and Delmarva when coming up to New England to visit her parents.

Our bins – this is a recycling week – go out tonight. The trash usually gets picked up while I’m still asleep, and the recycling late in the morning or in the early afternoon.

$1.3G? I really wouldn’t want more than $50M as a lump sum – way more than enough to buy a new house, fix this one up to make it saleable, share the wealth with a few charities/non-profits (Heifer International, the AMNH, WAGGGS, &c), and put most of it into a trust fund for my daughter.

No Labor Day here - not even in May!
This is the third week of school, which starts the first Monday after Assumption (August 15).

This sounds promising. I’m not a big fan of the pastor at my parents’ church, but he gave a good sermon about inclusivity, so sometimes he gets it right.

@TokyoBayer Even though it was expected, it’s never easy to lose someone. I am sorry for your loss and for the family’s loss.

Does that mean it’s time for a Lego treat for yourself, such as a Castle? Thanks for mentioning one of your favorite authors - reminded me about Louise Penny, so I’ll get her first book.

Today was my appointment with an anesthesiologist to make sure I’m fit enough for surgery. Which was just going through a questionnaire - no blood tests, etc. So two weeks from now I’ll have the surgery to remove my ovaries and tubes.

Since we ate and drank our way through vacation - including a week’s cruise with a drinks package (I am in awe of those who can drink 15 drinks a day - my highest was 9, but normally only 6) I am now attempting to eat healthy for the three weeks between vacation and surgery. And abstaining from alcohol. Such excitement.

Which includes going to bed at a reasonable hour. Night!

She wants to check out other churches down in Bellingham. I don’t think she likes liturgical services. (Whereas I think I like the structure.) The churches she mentioned were mentioned in something from an organisation that helps immigrants.

I think we’re going to the Fellowship Sunday. The pastor has a letter approving her for a Joyce Meyer mission to El Salvador in December. (It’s just two days, on a weekend, visiting an all-male prison.)

Going to get the latest information out there on recommendations about this fall’s flu vaccine to get that out of the way before we take up the gigantic mess that Covid vaccinations is now:

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/02/well/flu-shot-vaccine-cost-side-effects.html?unlocked_article_code=1.i08.NsYo.SD_ll3lG5hrv&smid=url-share

Now for the COVID vaccine, which is a convoluted, obtuse morass, thanks to you know who (and not our beloved swampy’s OYKW). Here’s a start, you probably need to read a l l l l the way to the end to have a chance of getting a handle on it so you can parse what will hopefully work for you, with your insurance coverage, in your specific state, with the pharmacies’ varying corporate policies, that are possible for you to get to.

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/27/well/covid-vaccines-guidelines-fall-2025.html?unlocked_article_code=1.i08.ddV8.TabvhZspSpwx&smid=url-share

Until that panel controlled by the FDA gives its final stamp of approval to the new, updated version of the Covid vax, nothing but the older vaccine is going to be available (if even that is) and I for one don’t want to settle for the older less targeted to the now prevalent strain vaccine in the first weeks of September if the newer, better 2025-2026 vaccine is going to get that approval and logistics of shipping, distribution channels and institutional administration policies gets momentum and rolls out making the best, more targeted vax available to me in weeks ending September into October.

I’ll get my geezer flu vax mid to later October to get the coverage for the height of flu season anticipated (flu immunity wanes after some months). My mantra is always FLU BEFIRE BOO!, meaning get-your-flu-jab before the ghosties :ghost: and goblins :skull: of Halloween :jack_o_lantern: start sharing germs door to door.

Maybe the right COVID vax will be available by the time I get my flu :syringe: and I can conveniently get both at once but I’m not counting on it and I’m not holding my breath given the obstreperousness of the PTB.

So, @The_Stainless_Steel_Rat, don’t get a covid vax until and unless the pharmacist assures up one way and down another that you are getting the new, targeted for the current strain just formulated vaccine, cuz if you get the early 2025 vaccine which might still be on stock, you will lock yourself out of getting the latest one for 6 months when it does come out (when, not if :raised_fist:t2: on :wood:).

NYTimes gifted article so it should be open to everyone. Let me know if it isn’t.

Well, yes, I know the other option is inland: since she’ll be heading toward the southeastern part of MD, I was just wondering whether FCM would do the I-64/Richmond thing or stick closer to the coast, up through Gloucester/Deltaville/Kilmarnock/etc.

I like the way you think! However, Lego are year-round: my birthday treats come from Tiffany’s*.

I have no room to display Neuschwanstein (though it’s on my wish list), but I do have a small arcade machine set arriving tomorrow. And I have a bunch of Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas sets in boxes – purchased off-season – that I’ll start putting together later this month.

*Assuming the dog doesn’t bankrupt me any time soon. :joy:

She’s the one with the new book coming out next month. I miss the days when I was just discovering the Gamache series and there was always another one to read!

Either 301 to I95 to I64, or 301 to 17 to 64 if we want the scenic route. Kinda depends on the weather, methinks.

I cleaned our bathroom. The shower still needs a good scrub, but I wasn’t about to strip down and climb in there. I’ll do it tomorrow when I shower. But everything else is spiffed up.

Got my car back - for just barely under $1K. Since I was originally fearing three times that much, I’m content. Once I got home, I gave it a quick wash since it was pretty groady looking. Now it’s nice and shiny - at least on the outside.

We may be driving to Annapolis to see a Dane who was removed from a neglectful home. She’s still skinny, but we can fix that. I’m wondering if they’ll let someone from outside the county adopt. If I recall when we went there once eons ago, they turned us away. So we’ll see.

The carpet is still a tad dampish, so we’ll put the furniture back in the morning. FCD has been setting up his phone, trying to remember what apps he had on it. Since the screen on the old one is dead, he can’t do the easy transfer. With luck, the repair guy he talked to can recover his photos.

Time for chillage.

I feel like I got nothing done today. Even though I changed the water in all 3 of our water exhibits. I went to all of the plumbing supply places in town, and no body has what we need. Friggin Germans using 1" GHT fittings. I mean really, who does that?

Frankly I just want to go down in the basement and build some shit. I’m hoping I can do that over the next week or so. What I’m planning on building is pretty cool.

On the home front, Miss Peach is a shredder. All of Cin’s old stuffed toys (that he didn’t like) are dead. She just looked me straight in the eye while holding onto a couch blanket. We’ve found some good tough to destroy toys. So far the squeaky tennis ball and a chuckit are the faves.

You and me both.

I went to the dentist this afternoon. They did xrays and found that the thirty year old root canal / crown left just enough of a root to blow my face up. I’m waiting for CVS to fill the antibiotic prescription, which I’ll take for a week, then have the whole mess removed next Tuesday. I’m just wondering what’s taking so long for them to fill the dang thing. Once it’s ready, I’ll harness Nelson up to go on a ride and we’ll pick it up.

Whilst out and about this afternoon, I did find the dog park, so we’ll likely hit that one day next week. I also got to figure out a little about getting around in my new neighborhood.

And a good afternoon to all. Did make the drive up to the border and now have $30 in forlorn hopes for Wednesday’s drawing, but it was nice to take a few roads I haven’t been on for awhile. Then off to gym where the required sweating was done and came home to some mid-day apple treats (2 mini-pies and a Cosmic Crisp apple), so dinner will be late tonight. It rained until 2pm today so the soccer fields are closed so no temptation to go out there. Evening will be sloth, readin’ and internettin’.

Temperature never made it to 80F today, feels like an early Fall but I bet that Summer still has a few blazing hot days tucked away for us. At least the lawn looks better with a good watering.

Taters. OPM is probably operating on a ‘just-in-time’ schedule given all that is going on, but keep checking things.

FCM, for all their size, Great Danes (In my admittedly minor experience) tend to be mellow-tempered dogs so they won’t be getting into everything as some breeds do. But it will be an adjustment… And the basic Powerball ticket is still $2 a game, but they have a couple variations that plus it up to $4 each. And I concur, that company sounds shady as hell, give them a wide berth. And glad the car cost wasn’t as bad as it could have been, not that a Grand of cash is small potatoes…

AAAHAAHAAAHAAAAAAHAHHAAAAAH

Coppertone, yay! on the rent, good luck with the interview.

Oopsie, well, sounds like Bailey and I have something in common (constant hunger). And dog will get better, you’re just what the Doctor ordered for her.

rocky, congrats on the new book, there are a couple I need to order myself.

Dicey, some early good wishes and crossed appendages for a safe and successful surgery in your near future.

BBBoo, you are undoubtedly right but (1). I haven’t had a COVID shot in a year and I’m coaching kids (2) I’d probably forget to get it if I wait for a month or two (and no guarantee the new strain is going to be released) so might as well get the old one and try to remember to get a backup in about 6 months. So I’ll get triple-punctured on Thursday (added the pnuemonia vaccine) at Walgreens. And just looked, I have an appointment with the ENT office on my hearing (1-year checkup) tomorrow, so I need to add that to my to-do list.

VanGo, sounds like life at home is at least as enjoyable as work.

red, not fun on the root canal, but at least it seems to be fixable. And awaiting Nelson’s first trip to the new doggie park.

And I’m finally at the bottom of the thread! So need to go check if the US Mail has anything for me and then get the standard 2sDay Mac-n-Cheese going. Take care all.

ETA: And just had a couple Mormon Missionaries come to the door, they were polite and didn’t fuss when I said I wasn’t interested (I was polite too but never opened the door all the way, either).

Howdy Y’all! Laundry got laundered and put where it stays until it gets dirty again. Also, trash got picked up before eight a.m. OYKW fetched the neighbor’s and our can up from the road. We Amurrkins call ‘em cans, but bin is a more descriptive term. Nappage and day drinkin’ were achieved and sup got fixed and et.

I am goin’ to run away Firday mornin’ but just overnight. I will be back Sattidy evenin’. I am goin’ to Honey Creek, our diocesan conference center, for a lay worship leaders conference. I had declined to go earlier because the lodge at Honey Creek was booked up and I would have had to find a hotel for the night. However someone with a room at the lodge had to cancel so now I can stay there overnight. OYKW says he’s goin’ to throw a kegger while I’m gone. Long as he cleans da cave before I get back that’s fine by me.
