(Old) 24 Hours of Labor- A Labor Day MMP

I’m very sorry.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. It’s currently 56 degrees Ferret Height out(13.3 Centipedes) outside. Spot is crashed out after Screaming Tuxedo Zoomies.

It’s $1.3Billion dollars for Wednesday, so I will stop for a ticket today.

And there were 62 posts!

That’s what I get for skipping a day. Not too much going on here. I did get quite a bit of work done. Some things I just have to wait for answers from coworkers. I scheduled a meeting with my supervisor first thing this morning to discuss a student whose mother had contacted me last week. I’m not sure what protocol is, so I don’t want to put my foot in my mouth, so to speak.

Otherwise, it’s 4:20 a.m. and I’ve already been up for an hour. I’m hoping that I can go back to sleep for a bit after MusicMan leaves so that I’m not a complete zombie all day.

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 15c/60f with a predicted high of 19c/65f and mostly cloudy. Weather app says “Of all the fucking normal, mild, cloudy days, this is fucking one of them.” So it is, I like mild and I like cloudy.

Same here - we were notified yesterday that a system upgrade meant we would have no campus services until 7.30am, so I was up early and changed the bedding first thing. That’s now swishing away in the machine.

I have the same recurring conversation with ‘im indoors, who has mentioned several times that he’d like a dog. I don’t want one, to be honest I’m not that keen on dogs at all. I’m fine with cats, they’re independent and largely take care of themselves. I do not have time or inclination to look after a much more dependent animal, and certainly not while I’m still working. Add to that the fact that he works away quite often, so I’d be left with the responsibility 90% of the time.

That’s a good bit of protesting, and always good to be visible even if you’re in a solid Blue area. Sorry to hear about the crash though, I hope damage was not too serious and only vehicles.

Ouch! Hope you manage to get seen quickly and they are good at their job!

Sounds like fun, but I’m not sure it’s a mental picture I really want at this time in the morning!

I had a busy evening in the end, logged out of work and went to do a Rockfit class although ‘im indoors has been faffing about with the electricals downstairs so I couldn’t find which bit to unplug so that I could connect my laptop to the tellybox. Thus I had to make do with attempting to follow the class on the laptop screen instead. Wasn’t too bad, there were some familiar tracks in there so I knew quite a bit of the steps already.

After that, I went to cool off a bit, tended to the needs of the felines, and made pan-fried salmon and salad for dinner. Vegged on the sofa for a while before giving the mogs their bedtime treats. Also remember to haul the biiiiig bin out to the kerb for this morning’s collection.

We were notified yesterday that campus services would be disrupted due to some upgrade work, and things would not be available until 7.30am so I did not bother logging in early. Instead, I did all the cat stuff, changed the bedding and had some breakfast before checking the state of student record systems. All seems to be ok, so irkage has commenced.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 63 Amurrkin out and mostly cloudy with a predicted high of 84 and sunny for the day. It’s laundry day, be still my heart! That is the big item on today’s agenda. Sup will be fried salmon patties, peas, smashed N.O.T., and bizkits due to a desire for comfort food.

BooFae reminded me that I have not given a bin report. The biiiiiig trash can was hauled all the way down to the road for pickup last night. Pickup could be early or late. Usually it’s before eight a.m., but when it’s delayed due to a holiday it tends to be later unless it’s not. Our trash service tends towards willy-nilly.

sensei so sorry about your friend.

red hope you can get the dental woe taken care of soonest.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Tuesday Y’all!

MusicMan just called to tell me that his boss has stage 4 lung cancer and it has possibly gone to his throat as well. On top of feeling sorry for his boss, he feels bad that it seems as though he (MusicMan) is always having to take off work for health reasons and they’re definitely trivial by comparison. Also, his boss is a musician and we’ve begged off going to see him play several times for various reasons - although the last one was because it was going to cost at least $60 per person. Nonetheless, I feel bad for both the boss and MusicMan. MusicMan feels like he’s been a whiner. In reality, I don’t think so. It’s just a difficult situation.

I’ve already said the dog’s crate will go in his office. He thinks that’s ingenious - so yay there!

We both woke around 3:30 after hearing a chime/tone/sound that we couldn’t identify. My tablet was on my night stand and its sound is off, so not that. I checked my phone - not that. His laptop is off and my desktop had been restarted but not logged in. All that was left was his phone, which has a dead screen, so maybe that was it. I know it wasn’t an intruder because when we went to the living room, Ziva was curled up asleep. Had anyone come in, she’d have bolted to her under-bed cave. So who knows?

I’ve decided to start the day with domestical stuff - both bathrooms need a good scrub and all furniture needs to be < ugh > dusted. So gardening will be delayed. I’d bought new, extra long, navy blue towels, and our bathroom is full of navy blue dust, even tho the towels had been laundered and run thru the dryer. Dammit. I hope they quit fuzzing after their respective second launderings.

Maybe I’ll even break out the carpet shampooer. Or not. I dunno. The dining room and living room both need a good cleaning. I should get FCD to help me move the dining room table before he leaves.

But first, I need to find my pearls and apron so I can do a proper cleaning.

Happy Tuesday!!

Bus’s are running again so off to the Y, a grocery store, library.
Also begging friends and church for rent phone and bus money.
Such is my life.

Me, too. I see on the Powerball website that there were more than a few winners of the lesser, but still large, jackpots. Like ten winners of the $1 million one and two winners of the $2 million one. I’d be perfectly happy with one of those.

Instead of Ocean City, MD in January, I booked us a few nights in Virginia Beach. I was looking for things we might do while there (Aquarium, Art Museum…) and I came across this: Aura Theory. I just don’t know what to say… Apologies if I’m insulting your beliefs, but I just cant…

OK, time to shower then attack the dining room carpet. It promises to be a good drying day. Onward!!

Good morning all. Arose early and have broken fast and am now wasting time until I get a little ambition to do stuff. Rainy outside, no storming but a nice steady soaking so the grass at least will be happy. Not much on the agenda, need to stop by the bank and my usual gym time, but no soccer coaching tonight. High today is supposed to be only 76F which is unusual for around here, I suspect we’re due for one more heat blast before Fall settles in.

Tried to pay my property tax early but the on-line payment system is down so need to wait for the old ‘bill in the mail’ and do it in person. And Kroger is still out of COVID vaccine, may try Walgreens’s instead.

Sensei, it’s not wrong to feel sad about losing a friend way earlier than you could have expected. Take care.

Just might be worth a couple gallons of gas today…

Sticky Buns, feel sorry for Music Man’s boss, that has to be devastating news, but MM shouldn’t feel guilty, he does what he feels he must for his own health and that is important, to him and to you.

swampy, happy laundering.

FCM, from the sounds of it you’ll be getting a dog soon…and I really hope it works out. And…

Invisible Mole People?

And onward into the day. Have a good one all.

doggio - maybe you can ‘splain this to me. Brown is delivering FCD’s phone and the delivery notice says “Signature required.” But they also give you the option of “signing” on line which means, I suppose, that they’ll just leave your package?? So what’s the point of saying sIgnature required?? I’ll be here so it’s no biggie, but, well, weird??

Happy Tuesday!

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. After, I’ll call the dentist, gather up the stuff that needs to go on errands and get sheveled to run said errands.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Good morning!

It’s 58°F and cloudy, and the sun rose about seven minutes ago. It’ll be cloudy early, changing to mostly sunny by late morning, with a daytime high of 84°F.

FCM, it sounds like you’re getting a dog. Here’s something for FCD to think about. As you know, Great Danes age fast and have mobility issues as they age. Given FCD’s back problems, is it wise to get a dog who will probably need help getting in and out of vehicles? Whatever breed you end up with, I hope he or she finds a space in your heart, too.

Sensai, I’m sorry about your friend.

Sticky, that is indeed terrible news about Music Man’s boss. However, he shouldn’t feel bad about his own health problems, not “comparing”. It’s not a contest, and I’m sure his boss doesn’t feel like Music Man is taking advantage of anything.

red, I hope you can get into the dentist and nip that infection in the bud.

Yesterday, I went to Lowe’s to obtain some mulch for the beds next to the driveway. I looked at clearance plants, but I just wasn’t feeling it. I then went to Home Depot and remembered that I needed a large tote, so I grabbed one there. I also looked at tools, garage shelving, flooring, front doors, closet kits, and lighting with fans. After that, I stopped by Jersey Mike’s at my husband’s request to pick up sammiches, then on to Safeway, where I picked up a few things, but I mainly went there to get doggie ice cream and a Powerball ticket. Alas, it looks like I will have to bestir myself on Wednesday to get another one.

As the time wanes for my incoming bi-weekly paychecks, I’m becoming a bit nervous. I haven’t heard anything from OPM yet (not even a case number), and my retirement is effective at the end of the month. I realize things are crazy, but I am a bit worried.

I have nothing on the agenda today except for spreading that mulch and watering the flowers. I’ll repeat it, I’m anxiously awaiting the waning of the garden flowers because I’m pretty much at my limit with them. I keep watering and deadheading, but now, I want to be done with it and start my fall hibernation. Unfortunately for me, the temps will remain in the 70s and 80s at least through mid-month, and there is no rain in sight, either. Ah well. Things could be much worse, and if that’s all I’ve got to complain about, life can’t be all that bad.

I had to ride the bus to high school because it was around five miles away from my home. My high school changed locations some time ago (they built a new one), but I remember celebrating the high school’s 20th year at its old location when I attended. It was built in 1961 and designed like a community college campus and spread out over a few acres.

The garbage and recycling were rolled down the driveway last night, and I expect the garbage truck to get here any time now. The recyclables won’t be picked up until much later in the afternoon. The garbage truck used to get here much earlier, but it seems to be getting here later and later in the day now.

Time for more coffee. You all take care!

I believe the answer he’ll give is “I’ll build a ramp.” On the other hand, other than going to the vet, we never took Higgs in the car with us. We’re not inclined to take a pet to Lowe’s or, frankly, anywhere. We’ve got a big yard so no need for a dog park. I’m not sure where else we’d want to take her. (Yes, the one he’s looking at is a little (?!) girl.

The dining room carpet is clean - the water from the carpet cleaner dump tank was almost black!! It’d been a while since I’d done this - In fact, before MIL moved in, so at least 18 months. Anyway, the house is open and I have a fan oscillating across the room. With luck, we can move everything back in by suppertime.

Our boat will not be done this week, and they don’t want to do the installation out of the water. So we wait. Well, and finish what plumbing we can reach. The generator is sitting in the way and it won’t be moved back till the tanks are in.

I haven’t bought a lottery ticket in eons, but maybe I will this time. I thought for some reason that they’d upped the cost to $5/ticket. So I’ll mosey down to WaWa for a couple quick picks. If I win, I’ll send you each a book of McD’s coupons! (Do they still do that??)

Lazy day here at the crack of 1030. Stayed out too late, slept in, and now caffinated. Fixin’ to shevel & feed.

My must-do events today are a car wash and some Powerball. Fortunately I usually get my tickets at the carwash, so that’ll be a two-fer. And seek out a flu shot or at least appointment for same.

FCM: The upside to a large dog is it’s harder for an older person to trip over it as it cavorts unnoticed beneath your feet. The downside is unless the dog gets well-trained to not rush people, a big dog is enough to happily knock an older person to the ground just trying to say “Hi!”.

Powerball is now $2 per chance and has been for maybe 8 years.

Virginia Beach in January? The temps should be in the 30s and 40s (0-10C), so not exactly shorts & sandals weather. I’ve been there in the summer and it’s a perfectly nice little beach resort town. But absent the beach, there is ZERO going on there.

@missred : Damned infection. At least it stayed (mostly) at bay during the moving.

@Taters : Good luck on OPM getting butt in gear timely.

i’m so sorry. may his memory be eternal.

your thoughts can just domino when someone passes. you go from the immediate loss to how that loss ripples out and touches so many.

this weekend was nice and quiet. the weather in philly has been incredibly lovely. very odd for the end of august. i went on the usual shopping trip on saturday. then loads and loads and loads of laundry. a bit of tidying here and there. started putting summer things in a bag for storage.

today i’m wearing a tweed herringbone jacket for the start of back to school; with autumn leaf socks.

can’t believe i forgot to put in for weds. off. favourite author has a new book out today. i get this series and author in physical book. i usually take the next day off to read it as sometimes the delivery is a bit late. the book has shipped. if it is delivered before i get home i have to decide if i stay up and read it, or wait for the weekend.

i will try to remember to get a powerball, i always get the powerplay.

Let me tell you about Trevor - the lab who plants himself in the middle of my kitchen while I’m trying to do, well, anything. Then there was Bernie - she was a border collie/lab mix who also was a trip hazard. So to me, a big dog is a BIG trip hazard.

Anyway, we think we’ve figured out the weird middle-of-the-night tone. Last night, FCD was communicating with what appears to be a clearing house for people wanting to get a dog from breeders. They make sure the potential owners are qualified to take on the breed they’re interested in. Unfortunately, this particular company is rather a pain in the ass. They sent at least 20 emails overnight about one dog FCD had asked about. And just a bit ago, we heard the mystery tone again, and shortly thereafter, I got a text from them about signing some agreement, setting up an interview, and oh-by-the-way, there’s this PayPal invoice for $2200.

That’s a big nope.

First off, I don’t want to deal with breeders. There are too many critters in rescue and shelters. And we’re not in any rush (I’m not rushed in the slightest, but more like resigned…) so it’s not like he has to find what he wants now. And I’m suddenly suspicious about this go-between company. They’re trying too hard or something. Especially sending us an invoice before they interview us? I dunno about that. I’m leaving it to FCD to turn them off.

We’re not going for shorts and sandals. We’ve been to Ocean City three times in the winter just to get away, but we’re tired of going there - it’s mostly closed down in the winter. At least Va Beach is an area where people live year round, so there will be things to do when we leave our oceanfront room. He was stationed there before we met, and I went a couple of times - once to visit friends and once on a work-related trip. It’s just something to do, within driving distance, in the dead of winter. And we’ll either go or return via the Bay Bridge/Tunnel, just because.

His phone was just delivered. Time to activate it. ETA - nope, gotta charge it before activation. But it’s lunch time, so off to sammich.

Happy belated labour day, y’all! I don’t get on social media much during the weekends and holidays, so I’m late to this one.

Weekend felt too short. It’s like I need 4 days for it to feel like a normal 2-day weekend. But it’s back to the grind. Next long weekend for us isn’t until Canadian thanksgiving on October 13th. Not sure if I’m gonna do a turkey (probably) or lasagne. Or something else, maybe. But I am definitely planning on trying my hand at stuffed peppers this weekend. The wife has had a craving for them, and honestly, so do I. Never made them before, but how hard can they be? I think I have to bake the peppers first though, then stuff and bake again.

I did make some Shepherd’s Pie over the weekend, and tried the suggestion that I add some baking soda to my decent but kind of tough packaged ground beef to tenderize it. Well, I don’t know if I used too much (probably) but it tenderized it to the point of it becoming sticky and ending up with a foam-rubbery texture that I found unpleasant. Worse though was the smell. Somehow it gave the ground beef a distinctly acrid ammonia smell. It tasted fine, to be sure, texture aside, but the smell was quite off-putting. Fortunately, all the spices and gravy I used helped mute the smell, and my wife liked the end result (though didn’t care for the texture of the beef either). I don’t think I’ll be trying that again; I’ll just stick to buying the good ground beef from my work-local market, which does sell high quality stuff indeed, though it’s seriously expensive by comparison at C$9/lb for lean. But it’s still worth it.

Alright. Back to the trenches.
