(Old) A Chilly (Well, To Me) MMP

Well, much as it goes against my nature, we’ll be getting a prepared meal for Thanksgiving from a local restaurant. The wife suggested it, and my first reaction was “hell no”. But when I woke up this morning, it seemed like the logical thing to do. Dinner prep for T-day is a LOT of work, and after six decades of prep, I deserve to take a break. I’m not expecting any great feast, but - you know - fuck it.

73F at 1220. We may get a bit of drizzle later today.

Offboob Offhand, I’d say twenty bucks for a regular (not horribly crappy but not fancy) and maybe $40-$60 for one of the nicer ones.

It’s been a while - I am way overdue to replace a couple of old favorites myself - and I’m routinely shocked by what things that I haven’t purchased in a while now cost, so take ^^ with enough grains of salt to season a big pot of soup.

@Chefguy how many people are you feeding/expecting? If it’s just you & the Mrs. for ex. I’d say it’s not close to worth the effort. Let someone else to the work - including cleanup.

Just the two of us. The well-known problem with a turkey dinner is that every single part of it requires varying degrees of preparation (read: work). It makes my back ache just thinking about it. Last year it was just the two of us and I spent two days putting it together. I think I’d rather have a cheeseburger.

Oh, my gawds, dude, if there’s zero pressure from family/guests, enjoy your holiday!!

I’m sure it will be even more delicious without the aching back and massive cleanup.

… and endless leftovers.

With something as potentially dangerous as a log splitter, I’m not sure I would want to loan it to someone else either. Liability could come into play if someone got hurt. If he hurts himself, then it’s on him.

Nelson is the same way.

I usually wait until Lane Bryant / Cacique runs a bogo sale that brings the price down to ~$30 each. Once I retired, I don’t wear bras every day like I did working.

You may be surprised. A couple of years when the family Thanksgiving got moved to Saturday, I took my folks to a local restaurant for Turkey day and it was very good.

I got the trash taken out and put some veggie scraps in the pot to make broth. Tomorrow, I’ll use some of it to make chicken stew. As for the rest of the day, RDOS.

Her gums are fine where the tooth was extracted, but her cheek hurts where she got the injection. She just commented (not knowing I was writing about her) that she didn’t realise having her tooth out would make her sleep so much.

Anyway, we went down to Cedars in Ferndale for breakfast. I had an 8-ounce New York steak and over-easy eggs. I’m leery of steaks at diners, but this one was tender and nicely rare.

I was feeling more than a bit under the weather, it was a bit of a struggle to get through. I wonder if it was last night’s salad. Too bad Breaking Bad is off the air, Walter White’s new ad campaign could be “Blue Meth: it’s safer than salad.” The had to bring in extra help to help me clean up the 300 Slide, but that’s nothing new. Damage and rewraps weren’t bad, I was out by 12:30. And Spot showed his concern for me by smacking me when I walked in the door. Laundry is in the dryer, and the Good Ice is done, so time for eggs, bacon, gin&tonic.

Bet she makes her tea with a kettle, instead of nuking it.

Understood. I will do better.

Both beagles I had wouldn’t hunt anything less than medium rare, so the neighborhood rabbits would gather at the apartment stoop to point and laugh,

Double pleasant surprise!.

That’s what I had Thursday!

Yes.

Alice’s?

Really great and helpful comments, all – thank you!

red, I get you completely about not wearing bras every day like I did when I worked in public. In fact, the only concession I make nowadays for delivery folks or others who are stopping by is to strap one on. No sense putting anyone in mind of a sack of puppies on the way to the river. Like shoe, I haven’t shopped for them for awhile and was a bit taken aback at the prices now.

But these annoying boulders need a lift and it’s not an easy job, so bra-shopping must occur. There is a particular one I like that covers all the requirements. They are fifty bux each with shipping! I gasped and spluttered a bit. But it sounds like they’re in the ball park for a quality product. These fit well and the straps stay put. I guess that makes them worth it. Thanks to all for chiming in.

Almost like being on The Wire, eh? At least no shooting. And I hope you’re feeling better now!

Gotta jet – more later, hopefully.

This is easily the earliest we’ve been ready: twenty till and we are SET TO GO. Some days we’re still scrambling after being open - and taking orders - five minutes after.

{ twiddles thumbs }

Both problems from last night are opening with me, but they seem subdued.

This was brilliant; shared with S.M.

If shipping is included, that takes a tiny bit of sting out of it.

Also, boobies need to be comfy, otherwise the whole rest of the body rebels!

Worth it IMHO. I’ve seen what are marketed as more-than-decent bras go for double that, and they may not even stay put!

Whelp, “Eye of the Tiger” just came on the speaker (someone’s Pandora, thankfully we don’t pipe in corporate) so I guess it’s showtime.

My mother is still vacillating about cooking the Thanksgiving meal each year, and this year we’ll go out for a midday restaurant meal instead. Our default is an elegant Indian place we all enjoy. If it were just me and my lovely wife (who’ve only had Thanksgiving on our own once? during early COVID), I’d find someone local selling rock cornish game hens rather than roasting a turkey. Not too bad for prep: small fowl, gravy, GF chestnut dressing, petit peas, yam with orange slices, crudité tray, a slice each of fancy store-bought cake, ice cream, coffee.

I hear we’re having a bottom round roast tonight. I assume that includes potatoes. I have no sasigned tasks assoiated with this meal.

ETA: Score! Post-bilateral, no bras!

Well obviously. I used to have a spare kettle for emergencies and so when I was moving house I could have one at the old place and one at the new, so I would never be forced to stoop to such depths.

The weather so far hasn’t been too bad, considering the forecast; I got drenched on the way to the party, but it had stopped by the time I left. We’ve not been getting hit too bad by the wind as yet, though that may change as the storm moves. It’s windy, but not crazy. I had drinkies and too much cake, talked to people and a pleasant time was had.

I did, however, hit a minor snag on the way home; I did not notice on the ticket that the stop I was dropped off at was not the stop I would be picked up from. I realised this discrepancy and that the actual stop was one street over and some distance further up less than 2 minutes before the official leaving time. Luckily there were enough other people getting on that I managed to frantically gallop over there and wheeze my way onto the bus just in time.

Anyway, I made it home without blowing away or missing the bus, so that counts as a win. I also managed to squeeze in a visit to the goood bakery, who even one of my favourite of their loaves left. First time it’s not been sold out before I get there in about 2 years.

Your liver is pregnant?

21? Good heavens – I’ve only read sixteen! A little catching up to do, I see. . . .

No, everything is beautiful (in its own way).

Shouldn’t that be a “Bah! Homburg!” hat?

So do I. When I remember to take a pen. When I remember to take the list. When I remember to actually write out a list.

Never give a submariner a straight line like that!

The evening before? Set-up is the reason we have to be there at 0515 when the polls don’t open until 0600. We’ll be working at the polling place for our precinct again, so I’ll recognise most of the workers, even if I don’t know their names.

Make it so! We’ll be going to SubVets again this year.

Howdy Y’all! I finally got my chikin livers and OYKW got his fried chikin. He will eat chikin livers if I make 'em at da cave, but not a favorite of his. I got the livers, fries, slaw, mac &cheese and a bizkit. What? I know there’s sump’n healthy in there somewhere. Needless to say nappage was accomplished on arrival back at da cave. I also discovered that rum and Poopsie Zero ain’t too bad together. Now I shall stare at stoopid teevee for a while. Plus there’s ice cream to be et.

Coppertone score on the Chinese buffet and the pizza!

Mollie seems like Chloé has trained you well!

BBBoo true that. The laundry and the kitteh don’t care if you put on pants or not. I am just off and on starin’ at some games.

BooFae hope the storm(s) abate soon and quit messin’ with your 'do.

Oopsie the mouse and pumpkin are cute. Sorry the teddy bear got cancelled.

MOOOOOOM can’t remember whether or not you bake, but a batch of homemade cookies is usually a nice and welcome thank you. And on the very next post BBBoo chimes in with excellent suggestions, as usual.

Cookie I agree that a prepped meal can be a crapshoot. Hope y’all get a good one. A place in Ye Olde Home Towne did a good one when I was a cub growin’ up there. I know because every once in a while I would get a little bit of it at a friend’s house whose ‘rents always ordered. My own mother would have never even considered doin’ such a thing! Plus, a prepped meal for seven people would be quite pricey.

doggio hope you feel better by now.

Lily yes! Now I want Cornish game hen with wild rice and cranberry stuffin’. Maybe one day soon.

Nuts glad you had a good time at the party and got home before the storm possibly gets too bad. Also, score on the bread!

Fruit of the Loom no-underwire cotton - they run in the $11-13 range. They used to be under $9 each, but, well, such is life. Anyway, they work for me. When I see bras for $40, $50, or more, I just can’t imagine what’s the big difference. Am I missing something?

As for not wearing one - not me. Unless I’m in my night clothes, I’m wearing one. It’s just uncomfortable otherwise. But my non-underwire cotton ones.

Done for the day - I watered what I planted and I’m about to order supper from Little Caesar’s because I can.

Ahhhh what a nice afternoon it was. I had lunch and did some solid reading (the New Yorker issue and a chunk of the David Baldacci book) on the main floor couch, then I spent some time busying myself with a Lego organization project. Then I got inspired to do some minor rearranging in the TV room, in order to move the curio cabinet to a different spot.

Then I decided to remove the miniblinds from in front of the one window in this room. I want them open all the time[1], but the little roller thingy that grabs/holds the strings is broken (they’re the only blinds in the house that still have strings) – and they’re too wide, so they don’t simply rest on the window ledge if I leave them down but open. I finally got tired of looking at them. Luckily they’re the type that slide into/out of plastic brackets, so I simply popped them out and stuck them in the storage room. Now I’m sitting on the downstairs couch and looking at part of my fence, a few inches of the bottom of my neighbor’s deck, and a sliver of leaves through an unobstructed window, and am quite happy…in fact, this would fit in the “things that please you well beyond their actual importance” thread.

This morning I was thinking that I might want to get room-darkening blinds for the master bedroom; if I ever actually look into that, I may also replace the blinds down here.

Now it’s 6:15pm, and after these replies I think I’ll make some popcorn and finally do a little more reading.

Cookies…?

Just a little.

We do the inside setup the evening before: arranging the tables and chairs, setting up the folding cardboard voting booths, putting up signs and required notices, etc. If everyone shows up, we can finish in less than an hour. We have to arrive NLT 0500 on election day (polls likewise open at 0600), and that’s to allow time to take our oath, do the outside setup (signs on and in front of the building, the “no electioneering” chalk line, etc.), assemble the ballot drop box, and turn the poll pads, ballot marker, and ballot scanners on. We typically finish with 10-15 minutes to spare, which lets everyone take one last restroom break and get to their initial stations.

coppertone’s post nearly inspired me to order a pizza for lunch, but I didn’t feel like waiting so instead I nuked some pizza bagels. Close enough.

  1. there’s no view to speak of, but I keep the vertical blinds in front of the sliding glass door closed all of the time so it’s the only bit of outside I can see when I’m down here ↩︎

I’m sensing a trend …

Sadly, no. :stuck_out_tongue:

Evening all. Home from the soccer day, and all tuckered out. Coaching didn’t go my way, the U7’s lost 1-7 and the U10’s lost 2-3, and the two refereeing assignments were fun but both games ran me ragged, so I am now home, well-fed and hydrated, in relax mode and have no intention of moving any farther than between my computer and my bedroom tonight, with maybe a couple of intermittent stops in the kitchen. Sore I am.

Still, did better than one other referee, got his report that while doing an U15 game a kicked balled hit him in the side of the head and knocked him unconscious! He’s getting checked for a possible concussion, but you can bet I was very careful on where I positioned myself on the field..

So about 34 messages today to wade through, so best get down to it.

Coppertone, guess those fortune cookies do work…

Knots, people who put up Xmas lights before Thanksgiving are not right in the head.

boo fae, nice thing about being almost bald is that I never have to worry about hairdressers/stylists… Enjoy the bands.

Bright Tree, so, calling someone the son of a female dog is a no-no too? (Yes, ma’am, I’ll be good).

Oopsie, that’s a beautiful piece of work there. And some nice methods of being a RDOS candidate-in-training.

FCM, if you can get your wood split by someone else, go for it! (also BBBoo’s suggestions). And Happy Pizza! Pizza! day.

Cookie, sounds like a good idea for a feed for two.

shoe, glad the workplace is a finely-tuned machine tonight…but I bet something was forgotten (or maybe I am just comparing it to me, who forgets at least one thing everytime I head out the door).

Nut, glad you made your bus and got the bread you wanted.

So say we all.

And finally made it to the bottom (for the moment), Back to internettin’ and trying not to overdo on calories, but it’s going to be hard. See ya’ll later.

Up from naptime, watching hockey, and having a Sazarac. Dinner is Asian BBQ stirfry. Spot is off being cat and mysterious.
I’m also teaching myself to draw a duck

My family always did that. Nothing like your own personal fowl for Thanksgiving.

< bucks trend >

Indeed. And glad the leg is a little better

That sounds like a truly lovely way to enjoy the holiday! (You got me at “elegant.”)

No deviled eggs?

I had a solo T-Day a coupla times, and did the “mini Cornish alllll for meeeee!” as well, which worked out nicely.

… other than a wee drinkie?

Now I’m soooo curious …

Different, ah, gravitational-defying requirements.

A supportive cantilever that’s also comfy is not easy to engineer.
