(Old) A Chilly (Well, To Me) MMP

I was able to buttonhole the maintenance guy this morning and let him know that while the heat is on for most of the building, it’s not making it down to our end. It’s not a big problem yet, but it could be in a couple of weeks. He’s going to call their contractor to come and take a look. Right now, it’s cool enough in the morning to need the space heater for a bit, but a week from Thursday, the overnight low will be below freezing.

My kids are busy trying to coordinate a family gathering around T-day. We won’t be going, as even a 40 minute drive on the interstate is just too exhausting, and my vision is a bit wonky at times.

Kind of a slow, low volume day. But there must have been a late Air, because they ran the belts till 0845, and there was a lot of Left In Building for a Tuesday. No errands today, so I came straight home. Having a sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich on Aldi Everything Sourdough bread.

I swear you could better service if they sold your building to the local slumlord.

Nah, stay off the ladders! I will hope for a big wind to blow the nest out to sea.

No, its just a droid and I’m honestly considering going back to a dumb phone. I only use it for talking, texting and kitty pictures. Of course, that would mean figuring out how to download all of my pictures from the cloud before losing access, so I’ll probably just take your advice and go to the U
Break It place again. I’d rather just replace the battery than replace the phone.

I grew up knowing that I had to eat all my dinner because there were starving children in Africa. I never really understood how me finishing all of my meat would help kids in another country so I mostly fed it to the family dog.

Thanks, it just takes writing a check now. I think I’ll have to review RE laws when I’m five years in, but not much changes here.

I agree with you that the American Chestnuts should be getting more press time, but honestly…with everything that’s happening today (now he’s cutting funding for weather satellites) a grove of functionally extinct trees isn’t that high on the priority list.

When Dad was coming home from Korea, he kept his M1 Garand, tanker model. No I don’t know how, I’m sure he stole it but I don’t know the details. Anyhow, it is in our gun safe now. Besides being the weapon recommended for the zombie invasion (recommended by world renowned expert Max Brooks), Marines drool over it for the history.

Harry wants Dad’s gun to carry at the grove. He says it will inspire respect and fear from the workers. I think that it won’t, but if bullets start flying, the M1 would be a good weapon to have. We are still talking about it, it is a very heavy gun and he spends hours at a time out there. I really do not like this timeline and would like to get off now.

It is SUPER good, so I can only buy one bottle at a time. It’s still 'shine and has a decent kick that is easy to ignore until its too late.

I’m old. I remember when you could get a Razr for a hundred so the idea of paying more than a couple hundred for a phone is pearl clutching for me.

Thank you. He’s in hospice now and his sister in Oklahoma (only living relative) is on her way. Hospice care means he can eat cookies for breakfast and cheesecake for dinner if that’s what he wants.

Tell her I said Thank You. TX is very interesting ATM, I have hopes for a good outcome.

Thank you, he’s on his way home now. 6 hours of testing, before being allowed to eat or have coffee. We will get the results in a few days. His heart is strong, its his veins that are the problem. It doesn’t matter how hard his heart pumps, if the blood can’t get through blocked arteries, it won’t matter. I sure do hope they don’t have to crack his chest open again, that was a very painful recovery when he was 50, it will be much worse now.

Good girl! I knew about the leash, wasn’t sure if his yard would be considered an extension of the leash.

Hubs is home, I’ll check back later. Have great days everyone.

Sadly a wind big enough to blow the nest away would probably blow the whole panel away, so please don’t! I’ll just have to keep looking for someone who isn’t terrible with heights who can go up there, get rid of the manky heap o sticks and net it. It’s just tough to find roofers here who aren’t complete cowboys who I’d rather avoid[1]

I’m sorry about James, he sounded like a good 'un.

  1. the horses are terrible at getting up the ladders ↩︎

I’ve quit yard work for the day - having cleared maybe 20-25 sq ft of liriope and lilies and weeds. I’ve got at least that much again to do. This pic is set to Public so anyone should be able to see it even without a FB account. Anyway, I put a bunch of bags of liriope and lilies on the corner with a sign saying “Take one or two or three…” I hope my neighbors oblige. I also have a grocery bag full of naked lady amaryllis bulbs - I’m going to plant them thither and yon.

I took some 8-hour generic tylenol in the hopes that I won’t hurt too bad. But 72-y/o me can’t do what 52-y/o me used to do with ease. Getting old ain’t for sissies.

I’m going to have some recliner time. Maybe I’ll go back out and dig a little more later. Or not. We shall see.

Early voting has broken records in Harris County (Houston) and all of the counties containing Dallas and Fort Worth, which bodes well for change. I’ll let you know if I get a postcard from MrsLA.

Up, been to the PCP, stopped at BK for a whopper for brunch and doing a little surfing before heading out to my afternoon infectious disease doctor appointment. Keep appendages crossed that I get the pic line out today!

Y’all have a great day!

Good afternoon! I fell asleep on the couch last night. The really annoying bit is that I turned off the TV at 10:30, so I could go to bed. My body said, “Screw you, dude! You’re sleeping right here!” I woke up just in tome to get up and drive Mrs Magill to the airport. She’s at her HQ this week, returning just in time to ride two hours to the away game up in Clarksville.

I did it. I got waxed today. It was… not pleasant, but not as bad as I had feared. I am supposed to avoid sweating for the next 24 hours, so no power flow tonight.

I typically add garlic until the ghosts of Mrs Magill’s ancestors whisper, “That’ll do, dear.”

red good luck at the Doc’s today.

{{{{JtC, hubby and James}}}}

Crossing appendages! :crossed_fingers:

Ouch. Hope the meds make it unnecessary.

This morning I got a text telling me that I spent money on Kindle. Asked hubby if he had bought a book. He looked at me a bit confusedly and answered, “No.”. Then I remembered that I had bought a book and it’s been delivered! So I have to finish the book I’m reading so I can read the new book.

(It’s all Oopsie’s fault.)

Work was typical run around and do other things, instead of the priority task, because they have even higher priority. At some point somebody will ask about the original task, but for now, the right hand and left hand aren’t speaking.

Saw a bit of blue sky this morning, but it disappeared, and now it’s fixing to start raining tonight. And rain tomorrow. All day. Which is the day I have to go all over Robin Hood’s barn, instead of just going to work.

At least I finished the Chambord. I’ll have to take a look and see if there’s anything else that needs consuming. Otherwise it’s whisky weather.

Hallooo!! Slept pretty well last night with only one bio break, so I’ll take that. A lot of body aches this morning, though. Getting old just gets better and better! /s

This morning kicked off with low 40Ferrets and is rumored to rise to 74F. If ever there were a day for me to get my butt on the lawn tractor and mow, it’s today. It could happen. Or not.

Hope you’re feeling better now, 52!

Missed this last night. Excellent suggestion! I’m going to ask my friend tomorrow while we’re at lunch.

Have fun in LA, Oopsie! The Getty is a very worthwhile visit, as is the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Both have amazing art collections. The Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades is also really cool, especially if you like gardens.

Have fun with your son, taters! And best wishes for a successful first surgery on Friday!

This just cracks me up! Reminds me of my brother with one of his cats, who was like a heat-seeking missile when it came to locating and killing bugs of all sorts. My brother would hoist Mallow up to the ceiling in the Rifle Position, and he would immediately go into the mode of Mighty Hunter. Killed a lot of bugs, too!

I can sure understand that. I saw your later post that said his heart is good but his veins have issues. I’m glad that at least he’s not dealing with heart issues. May he enjoy his coffee and chocolate now!

Glad the heat pump person showed up, Nut! That’s one chore out of the way, anyway, right?

That’s quite an amazing assortment of belt buckles, Knots! Do share photos, if you are ever so moved.

Enjoy a quiet day of RDOS, metal mouse. You’ve certainly earned it.

I’m sorry you will miss the T-day family gathering, cookie, but it’s a good choice with the challenges you have. I’m sure you will nonetheless make a feast worthy of the day for you and Mrs. cookie.

As ever, a delightful cartoon, doggio. I wish I could read what the cat in the middle is saying, though.

Kudos to Mrs. flyboy! I admire her dedication!

It is! Thank you. Dang, you put in a lot of work. Looks great, though.

Everything crossed, red!

Mollie, you have more courage than I do. I used to do my own waxing back in the day, but nowadays, it seems like an unnecessary time suck. My situation is much different than yours, of course!

Ollie puked this morning for no apparent reason. I immediately cleaned it up, because the gleam in his eye foretold even more gross behavior ahead if I left it for even a moment. He was quite happy to lap up his regularly scheduled gruel a few minutes later and hasn’t suffered any additional gastrointestinal distress, so who knows what caused that disruption? Of course I’ll keep an eye on him today.

Guitar practice is yielding good results! I still have a lot of practice ahead, but making chords is easier than it was and finger picking, too. I’m ashamed over how much I let this skill slip, but I’m still enjoying the process of relearning.

The leaves are changing color in earnest, the ferns are dying back. Winter is closer than I wish.

Can’t think what to fix for dinner. Maybe something on the grill. A lone portion of lasagna lurks within the fridge, but I can’t quite face it and it might instead disappear into the freezer for awhile.

Have wonderful days, everyone!

I found a recipe - I was searching for a casserole using cauliflower and spuds - and it was pretty good, if bland. I have some ideas for jazzing it up.

But the recipe itself kinda cracked me up. Quoting part of it:

  • 2 medium potatoes, sliced 1/8 inch thick
  • 8 oz cauliflower cut into small florets
  • 1 onion, quartered and thinly sliced
  • 10 oz chicken breast, cut in pieces

Pieces? What size? How thick? Gimme a hint here… so they can be specific about everything but the chicken. It just tickled me.

So far the tylenol is keeping aches at bay. We’ll see how I feel in the morning. And when I went to check the mail, I looked at the bags I’d left on the corner - doesn’t look like anyone took any. Oh well, worst case I dig a trench and stick everything into it.

OK, back to the recliner.

Kinda sore this evening. I processed a whole bunch of steel, taking it from 24 foot long chunks down to something more manageable, plus getting it off the floor. The website says each piece was .7 lb/foot, at 24 feet that’s 17 lbs. Felt like more, the big issue was not the weight but the wiggling. I did 35 of those this afternoon. Pick them up, put into saw, cut, and then put up in a rack. So essentially I moved 600 lbs of steel twice.

And the squirrels in the roof can fuck right off.

Ok, enough complaining. I’m going to make some…haven’t decided…either shrimp rolls or scampi over pasta. Lemon, garlic, maybe some capers?

Love the specificity of the recipe.

I remember being a broke-ass college student and being so jealous of the Kool Kidz flippin’ their Razrs open.

I also remember when iPods first came out, and the green-eyed monster in me was eyeballing the Kool Kidz with their white wired (!) earbuds.

I checked. The rest of us can do this, too … if you have complete disregard for your cardiovascular health and/or take a multivitamin.

But in all seriousness, I am sending good wishes for peaceful & pain-free last days on his behalf. The world is losing too many good-hearted people, too fast.

I spent way too much time trying to parse if this was

  • naked (no soil) “Lady” (varietal name) amaryllis
  • “Naked Lady” (varietal name) amaryllis, with soil

46-y-o me does not approve of this post.

My favorite place back in Dallas had a sign taped to the ceiling, in big font. “It’s worth it!” (They specialized in bikini/Brazilian waxes.)

“Mallow” is an excellent name for a cat.

Well, I didn’t get the pic line out. They want to do a CT scan on the hinky second toe before they pull the plug. I got a different antibiotic for infusion that will be three times a day rather than two. At least they only take half the time to infuse. I’m disappointed that I’m not free of the Tuesday appointments yet.

Howdy Y’a’ll! Laundry got laundered and put where it stays until it gets dirty again. I got my ‘script and picked up some Bojangle’s for lunch. YUM! We also accomplished nappage and day drinkin’, along with watchin’ stoopid teevee. OYKW is laid up in bed watchin’ one of his crime shows (the one that makes the loud DUN! DUN! noise from time to time) and I am here to post and to see whatup on teh intartoobz. The two of us live lives fraught with such excitatement!

The stories about all the moms various places where there are starvin’ children reminds me of my mom’s favorite. She always said there were children in India who were hungry. She used that line with me re fart blossoms. I said “box 'em up and send 'em to 'em.” I did not get in trouble but my father did for laughin’. He told her it was her fault for handin’ the little smart aleck a straight line.

Nuts all that dream needed was for you to be there in your underwear. Yay for heat pump guy showin’ up this time!

MOOOOOOM at least this time Otis didn’t go after chikins. As to the chikin in the recipe, I guess it means hack away to your heart’s content with a cleaver.

FlyBoy hope you get the property tax figured out soonest.

JtC here’s hopin’ all is good with hubs today. I see where you posted he is on his way home. I hope James has all the good things he wants to eat. When we did in home hospice with my mom, she got anything she wanted anytime of the day or night.

Knotty that is quite the belt buckle collection!

Cat_Glove I like to made to do lists. Sometimes I even do what’s on the list.

MetalMouse hope all goes well with the thing.

Cookie I agree re the turkey day travel. We will host a nice quiet feast at home with six guests. Eight people together in one place sounds festive enough to me.

doggio that sammich sounds yummy!

red all appropriate/inappropriate appendages are crossed. And I see it didn’t happen. Dang!

Mollie conga rats on gettin’ waxed cause that what you wanted. I wince at the thought!

BrightTree glad Ollie doesn’t seem to be sick. Give him skritches from Unca Swampy.

At first glance it was “naked lady amaryllis butts”.

Up from naptime, having a Manhattan, and chicken, bean, and rice burritos. Late night hockey tonight.

I broke 3 one year here at work, and I still paid less than an iPhone($1100) plus insurance.
{{{{JtC,Hubs, James}}}}

At all? Glad it was only mildly horrifying.

MEOOOOWWWRRRRR

< waves >

Poo. But glad you’re not getting worse.

Lord Amaryllis is aghast!

The flower has many names. In spring, they put out lots of greenery which dies back to nothing. Then in summer, a stalk will shoot up from which several pink flowers will bloom. I’ll be planting a bunch of them on the hill.

The plan for tomorrow is attacking the garden in the morning, then painting in the afternoon. FCD made a measurement mistake on the first set of drawers - they were too wide for the cabinet - so he had to remake them and I’ll have to repaint them. On the plus side, we now have 2 nicely painted wooden boxes for whatever.

And the Food Lion site is back up - huzzah! It’s that time of year when six $50 purchases will get you a $20 coupon in time for Thanksgiving. Sadly, buying $50 in groceries is really easy this year… I’ve got my first one checked off.

And on that note, I think I’ll toddle off to bed. I’s tahred.

Evening all. Gym was sweated, soccer coached, and dinner devoured, so that sums up the major accomplishments of the day. No soccer tomorrow (the one weekday I have off) so more house stuff may get done. Am still showing admirable (well, at least to me) self-control in eating only 1/3 of a pint of chocolate ice cream after I got home, so I guess I can keep buying the stuff. Got up to near 80F today but once the sun sets it drops quickly and it’s down to 56F now, heading for the 40’s. Nothing but TV watching, internettin’ and general sloth is left to the day.

20 messages to digest, so better start the readin’ part of the internettin’…

Cat Glove, cannot for the life of me remember my parent’s anniversary, they never made a big fuss over it. Dad would have been 118 and mom 107 this year, which would have been quite a record (they’ve been gone over 25 years now).

That…would make quite a story. Hope none of them were named Popeye…

Taters, need to take my car to the carwash, just need to decide which one, there are 8-10 of them within 5-6 miles of my house, not counting Buc-ee’s, which is a bit farther.

Nut, thanks for the information, have never heard of that before.

Cookie, hope the heat starts flowing your way. Can one of the kids provide your Transportation for T-day?

JtC, much as I like and respect Harry, an old (and powerful) gun in the hands of an old man in what could be a volatile situation doesn’t sound like a good idea to me. You know him and the situation best and I’m sure you’ll make the best call. Appendages crossed that Hubs chest can remain uncracked.

FCM, hope the aches don’t pain you. And youth is wasted on the young… And probably a silly question, but why would anyone want some uprooted plants, even if free? Hope you stay painless.

red, hope in the next 10 messages or so I read that the pic line is out. (and I see it wasn’t removed :slightly_frowning_face:). And Doctor, Whopper, Doctor…quite a trifecta there, long as the afternoon one doesn’t check your cholesterol level…

On the last train, I presume…

You’re braver than I am. Just having the EKG monitors removed is enough for me.

Bright Tree, trust you had some happy mowage. Glad Ollie’'s stomach has settled back to normal operation and conga-rats on the improving guitar work.

Mollie, can’t remember the last time I fell asleep on the couch–and I bought a sectional years ago so I could do just that…

VanGo, I’ve heard of pumping iron at the gym, but sounds like you did it in real life.

Shoe said it much better than I could…so a ‘me too’ from here.

And we just passed 9pm, so that’s about all for today, we’ll see what tomorrow brings. Take care and see you all on Hump Day.

I hope that they don’t have to do more surgery on your hubby, JtC.

I also hope that Ollie is feeling better, bright tree.

OK, I’m super stoned so I’m going to share this story. A while back I had a gaming partner who was 17. We used mics while playing and mine came on automatically when I started my computer. One day I heard the chime going off over and over - hmmmm, not our regular time - and it was him.

Back ground: He was also lifting weights at the gym and trying to get buff. At one point, he asked me if he should shave or wax because all of the gym guys removed their hair. I suggested waxing because shaving his back would be not easy.

Then we killed things for a while.

A few days later, he bought a home waxing kit and read the instructions that said to warm the wax strips between his palms. Well, that took too long so he ran HOT water over them. Then he applied a strip to his upper thigh, smoothed it down and pulled the strip up.

The hot wax stayed on his thigh and he just had a bare piece of plastic (or whatever it was) in his hand. He bent over to see what had happened and his dangley part got stuck to his leg.

He tried peeling it off with his nails, didn’t work. He tried shaving it off…wax doesn’t shave, it smears. He tried soaking in hot water and got wrinkled and red.

That’s when he got on his comp begging me for help. His parents were home and he certainly wasn’t going to ask them for help! It was pretty horrible, I could not laugh. He was already ready to die of embarrassment and fear, plus he needed to pee and couldn’t because he’d pee on his leg.

When I finally got him calmed down enough to pay attention, I told him to look in the box again because there was some wax removal cream.

I was a genius and he loved me forever, or until he found a rl girl who admired his muscles. That was it and I had to find a new tank.
