oopsie I sat here for awhile thinking about if I should post anything at all and in the end, I thought that I should stand up against discrimination and since there are things that I don’t know about, I also thought there might be others who might not know about this.
I am very sorry that you were offended and thought I was judging you, that was not my intent at all. I had thought that since I didn’t quote your post or mention you by mumper name that my comment wouldn’t be seen as being directed at you because it wasn’t. Again I am very sorry for offending/upsetting you.
Not a franchise, but your comment reminded me. My sister worked in a bar in Baltimore for ages. When the owner died, his wife and son took over. According to the wife, sonny boy could do no wrong. Yet my sister saw him selling drugs, stealing from the stock room, and pocketing cover charges. Mommy couldn’t understand why the take was so much lower when sonny boy was on duty, even tho my sister tried to tell her. When my sis had to quit on disability, who knows what happened. The bar is still in business but I wonder how things compare before and after the owner died.
This, also, reminded me of some local goings-on. The cafe on the square in Leonardtown used to be Linda’s. Then Linda lost her lease (rumors of ugly behind-the-scenes drama) and Irene opened another cafe that was slightly more $$, but still pretty good. Over the years, tho, it’s gone downhill.
Word got about that Irene was a rather witchy (with a B) boss and worker turnover was very high. And the food quality slipped to an astonishing degree while the prices went up. We used to go there every weekend, then once in a while, then practically not at all. The occasional visit was to see if maybe it got better, but it never did.
Anyway, the cafe is closed and the building is on the market. It’s a great location and there’s a real need for a good diner in Leonardtown. We’re watching and hoping. And, honestly, our first thought was that Irene had died (she’s well into her 80s) but she also owns a real estate company and that’s who’s selling the place. (FCD got the whole story from a local - small town, some people know all the secrets.) So, fingers crossed for a new owner and a good breakfast place.
The rain has started - luckily I don’t intend to hang my laundry out to dry. While it’s washing and drying, I’ll be finishing my sewing. And I still need to make my packing list. Daughter and her spawn will be spending the night here tomorrow so we can leave early on Sunday. I swear, if FCD had his way, we’d be on the road at 5. I convinced him to wait till 7 - at least by then, the sun will be up.
Yesterday evening, I brought in a bag of pellets, meaning to fill the stove before we went to bed (there wasn’t enough room in the hopper when I brought it in.) Well, I forgot, so the stove was cold and the house was a tad chilly when I woke. Dammit. I have since filled it up and restarted it. It’ll be chilly in the basement, but I’m not going to light a fire. I’d already cleaned the fireplace and I don’t want to mess with it. I’ll wear a sweater and think warm thoughts.
FCMom, when I’m looking for donuts, I go to a local bakery. Some grocery stores also make their own acceptable donuts. Like you, I don’t do Dungeon Donuts.
There is a place nearby that offers donuts - $3 each… I like donuts, but not that much. There was a small local grocery chain that had really good ones, but they went out of business.
Last night’s rehearsal was loooong. Normally we rehearse near chairs so we can sit occasionally, but we’re doing this concert from standing risers, so no chairs. A few times she told us to sit on the risers, but being short I was standing on the floor in front of the risers, so my only option was the floor. As fat as out of shape as I am, that was not a comfortable option.
Today I’ve been blessed by St. Cancellatious (what we call it when students cancel and we don’t have to make up their lessons) in the best way; I get to start an hour late and end an hour early. Now I have to decide if I come home between work and concert or have a relaxing meal out. Probably the latter to save myself an hour of driving.
Morning all. Pancakes and Bacon have been consumed, shopping and banking have been done, contacted people to replace the missing tile in my kitchen, and the dishwasher is merrily churning along. So that’s enough adulting before 10am. Bright and clear but cool (58F is cool in N. Ali-bama). Planning to have a makeup practice for soccer tonight if the fields are open (won’t know until 4pm) and also get my gym and weight training in as scheduled, so a fairly busy day.
boo fae, I’m planning to take a train from London to Southampton catch my cruise ship and one back to catch my flight home, guess i ought to give myself plenty of leeway just in case…
swampy, enjoy Pearly’s (is there a more Southern-sounding name for a restaurant than that? Maybe Bubba’s…).
FCM, not many local places left around here, the influx of chain restaurants and such has been intense these past couple of years and the locals have trouble completing.
Pavo, nice on the cancels, better than breaking up the day. Enjoy the meai you will talk yourself into…
And that’s all for the morning report. Have a good Firday all.
Meanwhile here, CRAP CRAP CRAP!! I screwed up the portside weather cloth - I forgot to allow for a hem on one end, so it’s too short. Dammit. I’m having to rip out that end and splice in a strip. And the starboard cloth needs to be stretched - I should be able to do that with an iron. Or maybe not. I don’t know. I’m taking a break.
Fairly heavy, steady rain has been falling all morning. One load of laundry is folded and stowed, second load in the dryer, last in the washer. I just finished a PB&J sammich but I have no idea what we’ll do for supper. And that’s all the happenings at FairyChatEstate.
We did that in the past and it was pretty straightforward. I may opt for that if the online method gets too balky.
Made sausage gravy and biscuits this morning. Not bad, but I’ve made better. Not sure what I did differently this time, but it’s been quite awhile since I bothered with it.
Exercise was a struggle after skipping Wednesday. Ready for a nap, which will have to wait until the cleaning person is finished. Finished all my puzzling, so. . .wait, I forgot the mini crossword! To the Batmobile!
The usual heaving chaos. Considering it was raining during the sort, there’ weren’t many wet boxes to retape. I stopped at the Likker Sto on the way home for some rye, since I gave up Lent for alcohol. Laundry is churning as we speak.

This morning I hauled the biiiiiiiig trash can to the curb, and a little while ago I got both an email and a text message from the trash company saying that my pickup has been delayed by 4 hours. I’ve never gotten any messages from them before! I also have no idea what my usual pickup time is; all I know is the truck tends to come through the neighborhood sometime in the afternoon. I’ll be able to tell when the pickup is done, though, because right now the lid is slightly open (the cleaning ladies stuffed today’s garbage bag in there). It’s been raining all day and won’t stop until the wee hours, so I hope the inside of the can doesn’t get too wet…I think it’s too full to really worry about, though.
Two things I forgot to mention yesterday:
(a) swampy’s talk of nanner puddin’ inspired me to include some in yesterday’s order from Wegman’s! I hadn’t had banana pudding in a really long time, and I ate half of it after dinner. It’s really good. I’ll be eating the other half shortly.
(b) Yesterday marked 11 years since I moved into my current rental! My previous record was 4 years. This is my 10th address since 1994, which is when I moved out of my mom’s house (a year after I graduated from college). Several years ago I decided that I’d like to stay here for as long as Bailey is with me: there’s a big yard, it’s all one level (I’d hate to imagine her in a place with stairs these days!), and I like the house well enough to not want to move her again (it’s our 4th home together). It’s a 3BR 1BA 1950s rambler: a touch on the small side, but not bad at all for one adult + one dog. I know that once she’s gone, though, I’ll look for less yard and more house…I think I’ll want to go back to townhouse living. But whenever the time comes my rent will increase by anywhere from 16% to 36%, which is the secondary reason I’m in no hurry to move. It’s amazing to me that Bailey was only 5 years old when we moved in!
(The listing actually said “no pets,” but I called the property manager to ask how firm that was and I was able to convince him to allow Bailey. The top two things in her favor were (a) weighing less than 50 pounds and (b) having a stellar rental record.)
I finished the Lego Ghostbusters firehouse last night!
For the interested, a bigger version of this picture – plus views of the firehouse when closed (and updated photos of my three main displays) – can be found in my Lego photo album.
You two (and missred) are dead to me!!1!
I’m not a big chicken sandwich person, and I don’t do fried chicken so I never go to Popeye’s/KFC/etc., but there’s something about the breading CfA uses for their chicken nuggets…soooooo good! (Not the grilled nuggets, though. Ew.) My only options on Wednesday were either a sandwich or a wrap: the sandwich was tasty, but I would have chosen nuggets in a heartbeat. That’s what I always get there, and usually that’s all I get from there. I don’t even really care for the waffle fries.
That info is neither news (to me) nor bad. What a CEO does with their own money is completely separate from corporate policy. Will I eat at Dan Cathay’s backyard BBQ? Nope. Will I eat at CfA? Yep.
I thought I’d see what my 401(k) closed at yesterday (it’s a day behind), and I could not log into John Hancock. I tried on a Mac, and then the PC I’m connected to remotely.
I pull mine out and polish them on a regular basis. I got mad at AT&T before it split up. It doesn’t matter that AT&T now isn’t anything like the AT&T that was, they will never be forgiven!
We used to be heavily involved in cat rescue and I agree with 'im indoors. We always got all of the broken (ugly) ones too. Now is not a good time in my life to start fostering again, but I am planning on starting again in a few years. Just…no kittens.
Kittens are cute and cuddly and a super pain in the ass, I’m too old to be fostering litters of kittens anymore.
That must have been so infuriating for your sister. Ugh.
Nobody died and we didn’t get kicked out* so I am going to call it a success.
We are home now and are exhausted. Of course nobody slept well, and we got up way too early so it will be an early night for us tonight. I don’t think Jolene slept at all last night either, I didn’t know that cats could stay awake that long. We let her out of the carrier and she used her litter box and then climbed up on her waterbed and has been asleep ever since.
Oddly enough the workers haven’t come back to finish the job. They haven’t been paid and are a small company and it is Friday. We thought they would have been here bright and early so they could get our check to the bank in time to make payroll.
WORRIED!!!
Very cool! Now I’m inspired to watch the movie again.
Don’t do that. Really, don’t go there. Things are changing too fast and what you see now is not what it will look like tomorrow. Unless you are on the insiders list, you won’t know when to sell or buy so for now, just leave it along because there really isn’t anything you can do about it.
*Hubs wanted to go out to dinner and GG got scared because he was in a strange place without his people and started wailing. The boys got some very healthy lungs in him so halfway through dinner, I got a call telling me that we can’t leave our pets unattended in the room.
