I have been soooooooo productive! I put away the clean dishes and started filling the dishwasher with dirties. Plus I hand-washed the stuff that needed hand-washing. I cleared out the area under the steps downstairs and vacuumed up several years of dead bugs and miscellaneous dust. Then I de-ashed the basement fireplace insert, including a quick vacuuming of the last of the ash. Next was a quick roll-suck of the area where the grands played last week as well as around the hearth.
FCD came down and decided what he wanted done with his stuff from under the stairs. There wasn’t a lot, but most of it was destined for his shop. I needed to get the garden wagon out so I could bring the walkers and the wheelchair downstairs and they fit nicely where we wanted them. I also put a few things back in that closet that FCD wanted to keep but not in his shop. Final step was hauling the stuff he wanted to keep to his shop, then putting the wagon back in the garden shed. I’d say most manual labor is done for the day. Yay!!
Yeah, this! It’s nice to know swampy has adult supervision, or so I assume…
I think I’ll take a book break - I need to find out what Phoebe is going to do now that Miles is dead and she doesn’t want their newborn son Jeff. She really didn’t want to marry Miles in the first place, but it seemed like a good idea at the time, yanno? She wanted Oliver but he married Maia who’s a right bitch and their daughter Hermione is a junior bitch… Such a soap opera! Oh, and the Germans are about to start WW1. So there’s that.
What is the requisite time after pillage before eating? A decade? A century?
The Romans used to ‘salt the earth’ after pillaging, which was meant to prevent the conquered from growing food for a generation. That’d be a pretty long wait for your breakfast. Of all the Mumpers, you are among the very last I could imagine pillaging anything (well, except for that pesky, obdurate Sunday crossword). Ravaging, sacking, looting just doesn’t seem like you (me? I’ve definitely had my moments and recently! there are reasons I warn about my night nurse voice).
Here’s what Merriam-Webster thinks pillage is:
How does the verb pillage contrast with its synonyms?
Some common synonyms of pillage are despoil, devastate, ravage, sack, and waste. While all these words mean “to lay waste by plundering or destroying,” pillage implies ruthless plundering at will but without the completeness suggested by sack .
There’s some colorful synonyms in there that might come in handy for a crossword some day.
I’d offer ‘pilling’~as in “first thing this morning before making coffee is pilling the cat. Coffee is my reward for tackling that death-defying feat”.
Well, it’s usually 45 minutes after taking my thyroid pill on an empty stomach.
And as for the more common meaning, I always prefer Maxim One from the old webcomic Schlock Mercenary: Pillage then Burn (And I think this pre-dates the album, shoe–albeit it was probably first said by Ghenkis Khan…
16F right now and wind chill, of course. I received an email announcing my 60th high school reunion. Talk about something making you feel like an antique! I’ve only been to one (40th), and that was quite enough for me. Most of those people hadn’t changed a bit, mainly because most of them have never left Alaska. HS snobs were still snobs, which is pretty amusing to me. I’ll be mildly interested to see who has croaked in the past 20 years, but that’s about it.
Gotta do a bit of grocery replenishment today, but nothing much happening this week around here.
I got in a good workout at the gym. This gym is the only one in town that participates in the “Silver Sneakers” program, that is, it’s free membership for us old fogies. It’s a big and well-equipped gym, but its vibe definitely targets the younger, maler, more muscular demographic. I feel intimidated and out of place every time I go there, which is not helped by loud rap music playing out of the sound system.
Then it was a stop at the bagel joint to bring home a couple of onion bagels to go with the store brand lox I bought yesterday. I made open-face bagel, cream cheese, lox, and caper sandwiches for breakfast, and they were enjoyed.
Now it’s on to dusting the entire downstairs, which hasn’t been done for a couple of months. It’ll have to be just a Swiffer dusting, as I’m running out of gas. A proper cloth dusting with furniture polish and everything will have to wait another month.
It was FUBAR as I had thought, though not quite as bad as Monday. I did my Grocery shopping for Senior Day. Maintenance has found the leak, after some drilling. They will be back in a bit to fix it. Spot is of course not happy that people have infested his domain.

She’s warning you about The Invisible Mole People in the kitchen.
Sitting here having cravings; a piece of buttered toast, a soft serve ice cream cone. Cannot afford this.
Most of you seem way above me, you can actually afford restaurants.
I will always be in poverty, I’m certain its Gods will for me.
Yeah, but here in MMP-speak, one must add -age to a word to convey the essence of what one means to say. For example: mowage - the action of cutting the grass. So don’t you go getting all literal on us when we understand fully what MetalMouse meant. Don’t make me put you in time-out-age!
We’re just back from Salsa’s with a quick stop at Food Lion for milk and a coupla other things. I’ve got the ice maker going and I’ll head back to my recliner for more readage ( BBBoo - ) and relaxing. We’ll probably just pick at supper since we had a fairly substantial lunch. Not sure what else the day holds until it reveals itself. But I shall muddle on.
Are you two conspiring to create major pissage here?
And just the way to start the new year, BIL has done it again. He’s back in the hospital after another suicide attempt. Luckily, FCD had the phone number of his case worker and his boss and he’s talking to her right now. So I don’t know where it will go from here. My poor sweetie is beyond fed up with this - 4 attempts in the last 2 anna half years…
taters, my aunt was the last of her siblings, (the last shall be first, and the first shall be last) when my mum passed she lost her childhood. it was interesting when we would get them going on “what the days of yore” were like. they would go down the remember this or that. she lost that. there was no one to remember.
happy birthday to oykw!
fcm, that is quite a full and productive day! i’m sorry to hear that bil is struggling. fcd has taken so many blows in 2024, he should have at least a month or two grace period in 2025.
snow will be flying for tomorrow, and a white christmas is in the works for the jan 7th christmas types. 1-2" on the afternoon/night of the 3rd, and possibly 4 inches on the 6th! woot! snow!
