(Old) Firin' up the grill in the MMP

Morning all. Getting used to awakening at 6am (not that I like it), and ended up putting the garbage out at the curb even if they don’t pickup until tomorrow, because like Bruce Willis as Bilbo Baggins, Old Hobbits Die Hard (I promise, not more puns…at least in this post). Another nice day, heading for 85F and a 1-in-5 chance of rain. Outside of filling another T-shirt with sweat at the gym, nothing much on the agenda this first day of June.

FCM, think even a short time for Toby isn’t a bad idea if you can swing it. Happy boat maintenance day!

Boo fae, Shadow has to be wondering why you’re letting all these strange characters into the house when you already have the perfect cat… But good on ya for helping out.

Sensei, I wish more teachers were like you.

JtC, like swampy, logically you should replace the burner and pot at this time; but as Science Officer Spock once said:

So do what you want.

Real Fish, good on you having a productive day, and a 2-mile walk is a pretty good amount of exercise. And hope CtE cna stick with his goals.

doggio, Sigmund Freud would have gone mad trying to interpreting your dreams…

OK, need to break my fast and get down to slothing. All y’all take care.

I need to find the setting on my weather app that gives this commentary.

Sounds good! I was in a cook mode as well, and while I originally planned something simpler, my wife kept saying 20 more minutes a few times in a row so things got a bit out of hand.

Also, SenGirl said that I had to tell you’ll what we ate tonight.

My kids have to put up with a mixture of cuisine. Tonight was sparerib soup with Singapore flavoring, Japanese sticky rice with furikake, shiitake sautéed in butter and garlic (origin unknown), steamed satsumaimo (definitely Japanese), seasoned potato wedges with cheese (American), tamagoyaki (Japanese style omelet with soy sauce and a bit of sugar) and tofu topped with leeks and a creamy soy sauce (Taiwanese).

I’m decidedly not a cook, but I’ve been trying a few more things lately and my family claims to like it. Personally, I wouldn’t put it past SenWife to bribe the SenKids to say that, simply to pass the cooking duty over to me.

i’m back to get the painting done. we have a bit of non humid weather going on and now is the time.

last night i got the taping done, hopefully i’ll feel like painting tonight. Dragons Blood CW-320 | Benjamin Moore if i like how this looks, there are two other small areas that will change to this colour.

if i don’t feel like painting, i should clear out the night table drawers. they are getting way to cluttered.

the odds of me just reading are high.

fairychatmom, my mother could not understand why i was a bad speller. she would say you are such a good reader, how do you mess up spelling? i see words as a whole, not individual letters. i don’t do well with jumble games, boggle, or scrabble. typing took a bit as well.

phonetic languages do have a major advantage, and no spelling bees!

I’m the same way. Spell check taught me all I know about spelling.

how do you do with kanji?

as i ran in a nerd herd, we did not play twister, we played body boggle. the only boggle i did somewhat well.

Golly. Lot going on w y’all today.

Good to hear Truefish made it home alive. Dear, everyone loves you; even the librarian you volunteer for. You’re seemingly really stuck in a mode of believing everyone is out to get you. Tain’t so. {{hugs}}.

Good luck sorting out the ulcer. Good news is that’s a relatively addressable problem these days.

Now that is some world-class wisdom right there. Fully worthy of the honorific Sensei. Good on ya’.

Sounds like FCD needs to drive his sorry rump to Wally World. If you reward bad (in this case thoughtless / selfish) behavior you’ll only get more of it. Sigh.

Yes, those are amazing Legos.

As to me:
Went to bed at a reasonable hour & slept 10 hours. Which is rare for me; I must have needed it. Awoke with an utterly full nose / head, a bit of laziness, and a bit of stiffness. But 10h in bed will make anybody stiff.

Now 2h later I’m comfortably lazy, ever so slightly muscle-achy, and still with a full head / nose despite decongestants. HQ has been notified that I can’t work UFN. Her Ladyship reports that maybe, just maybe, she’s feeling slightly congested too. Crap.

My notes say I made it 8 weeks since the last time this happened. It’s not COVID but I gotta say I’ve had a lot more URI/sinus problems post-COVID than I ever did before. Whether that’s a lingering effect of COVID inside me or a lingering effect on the population at large I can’t say. Oh bother.

But compared to the various afflictions the rest of the MMP folks deal with, this is positively healthy. No sympathy wanted here.

Cheers all!

It’s an app called What The Forecast, you should be able to find it in the usual app store. Once you’ve downloaded it, you set up your preferred level of profanity

I always figured that was just you ad libbing your own humourous take on the usual bland bureaucratese from the Met Office. I’m actually disappointed to know it’s just an app. I’d gotten used to anticipating your latest burst of creativity each day.

I wonder how the app would react to the decidedly boring forecasts in less weather-cursed parts of the world?

I heaved bags. Then I went to Orange 42, and loaded. I heaved Goodyears till I was tired. Today’s repetitive work song was Downtown. Except that hasn’t aged well. Maybe some updated lyrics for the new Millenium:

To quote one of my Facebook profile pics, “I am very shy, but very food motivated, so I am just a few treats from being your new best friend.

does it even remember how to boat?

I’m still waiting for the one where the Lesbian Military Coven gets to babysit the dwarf Allosaurus.

That would involve the Pointy Stick Wielding Sri Lankan Spiders.

I could never inflict such a punishment on him - he only enters that store under duress. Anyway, I need some other things there, so it’s not a big deal - I’ll be going anyway. But it didn’t happen today.

He had a good nap and shortly, we’ll leave to fetch Roxy. Gotta call to see if I can take my car in tomorrow to get the transmission looked at.

I went to CCD classes when I was in school in NY. Kids whose parents wanted them to attend were walked from the school early every Thursday to whichever denomination of church our families attended for religious education. My mom hated it for one reason and one reason only - the school called it early release, and Mom thought it sounded like I was getting out of prison. School was never a prison for me, but religion… I’m glad I followed my own path!

Sensei, the whole internet saga is just insane. I’ve had some issues with providers before but nothing like this. I’m glad that it’s (semi) taken care of, Here’s hoping the router comes as it’s supposed to!

Niner, you’ll kick butt on that interview. And you’ll get the job and work out the money situation and everything that’s supposed to happen will!

Cookie, I’m sorry about the card. Definitely sounds like an inside job. grrrrr Hopefully this one will stay safe in the safe.

metal mouse and pilot, I was so bored in high school because the classes just weren’t challenging. They got a bit better when I moved to Florida - that was a school that actually had AP classes, whereas my school in NY had nothing beyond regents. Mostly As and Bs there, though I caught mono my junior year and got a D one quarter because of it. Trying to get caught up was a beyatch.

pilot, sorry for the puny feelings of ick. I hope you get feeling better sooner rather than later!

Oopsie, I love the Van Gogh Lego. And I agree with everyone else that says the Eiffel Tower looks better without the elevation.

Cupcake, It’s strange the way different school systems have different cutoff dates. When BtY started here, the cutoff was August 1. In the school I grew up in, where my sister and her family still live, their cutoff was December 1. Therefore my niece, who is a month younger than BtY, is a grade ahead of him.

Bumba, thanks for the cheesecake recipe. I look forward to giving it a try. Hubby and I are going grocery shopping tomorrow (the first Friday of the month is always grocery day because a) we have money in the bank for big shopping, b) 4 times fuel points, and c) Hi Opal!) so I’m going to try to pick up the ingredients and see what I can do this weekend. If I succeed, I’ll take and post some pictures.

JtC, I had a similar math teacher to your Mr. Johnston. In 8th grade, I was allowed to take Math I (read: Algebra I) because I was incredibly good at math and 7th grade math had bored me to tears. It worked out that I was able to switch two of my junior high classes around and actually take the class with the freshman. The next year, though, I had a class at the time that Math II (read: Geometry) met for the sophomores, and there was only one class anyway. (One of the biggest drawbacks of small towns). What Mrs. DePalma did was use her planning period (which was also a time I had study hall) to teach me Math II one on one. She was giving me harder assignments than she was giving the regular class, making me figure out the whys of certain things. And I loved it. Because it was just me, we were able to pace it to what I understood instead of having to go with the lowest common denominator of the class.

And here’s hoping that soon you’ll find a new cheese buyer and have a reason to get the electric cheese pot that you want!

I love this! Teachers like you have always been my favorite, both for me and for the kids. The teachers that understand that not everyone learns the same way and sometimes you need to let the kids think outside the box are, IMHO, the best ones out there. It’s like when BtY was in 8th grade and had to keep a reading log. Technically, the kids were supposed to read a book with a plot or something similar. BtY wanted to read the dictionary. For the whole year, he would read through three pages in his dictionary and choose one word from each page to put as something he learned in his reading. He always made sure to choose words that he actually didn’t know. And his English teacher loved it. Because, for BtY, that was what helped him learn better. His math teacher this past year let him take his state standardized test under a table, because she knew he would be more comfortable that way. I’ve been very lucky that both he and CtE have had teachers that are willing to let them be themselves and understand that if they act “out”, its not just playing around.

And I agree about there being many people that shouldn’t be teachers. It’s always better to figure out what the problem is than it is to just label a kid as a “bad” kid or too much trouble. If you were in the area, I’d definitely have wanted you as a teacher for my kids.

BooFae, I’m sorry about the problem at the foster’s home but glad that the six cats were able to be temporarily relocated. Here’s hoping they’ll come out and feel the love in your home sooner rather than later!

FCM, I did two days a week of Parents’ Day Out for both my kids. It helped out CtE with socialization to the point that they didn’t even cry when I left them at school for kindergarten. Not as much socialization help for BtY, but now we know that it wasn’t the programs fault OR his - it was just the ASD letting us know that it was there. I hope that you’re able to get two to three days a week where Tobas’ getting socialization and you’re getting more free time. And, from having taught at a PDO, it’s definitely student/teacher ration. When I taught the 2 year olds, I couldn’t have more than 6 kids in my class.

taters, sounds like a good weekend to me. I hope enjoy your You Time.

metal mouse, I’m hoping they can stick with their goals as well. They did come out with me to walk again today, so it’s a start.

Sensei, that sounds like a really yummy dinner. I’m not a cook either, so much of the meal making lands on Hubby’s shoulders. I’m hoping that as I’m making changes to myself that I’ll be able to start helping out more and ease his burden some. (Both CtE and I have a habit of forgetting to eat if something isn’t placed in front of us. BtY grazes. Only Hubby is ruled by a timed stomach.)

rc, your plans of painting vs clearing vs reading sound about like how my nights go. Yep, I should really be doing more work around the house. What I’m doing instead is sitting on the porch reading. But I’m looking at it as self care, so I’m convincing myself I’m still doing something good.

Oh, I know that no-one is out to get me. It’s not so much persecution as my continued belief in not being worthy of being loved or liked, which comes from many, many years of trauma with bad boyfriend choices. I always worry what people aren’t telling me, so I overthink. MFN posted a meme on FB that said “Reassurance means a lot to an overthinker” and yeah, that’s definitely me. It’s especially easy for me to overthink when I have a lot of upheaval in my life, and with the way the last 6-8 months have gone, a lot of upheaval is an understatement. When I’m feeling more secure in my life, I’m able to see what I have to offer and say screw anyone who doesn’t like it. I’m working toward getting there. I’m just not there quite yet. {{{hugs back}}}

doggio, you’ve now put a new earworm into my head, which is right up there with this Flowers Parody regarding Magic: The Gathering that Hubby has been playing regularly.

FCM, are you having transmission problems too? I hope and pray that yours are easier and cheaper to fix! I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Today has been good so far. CtE and I were able to get out fairly early to head to Centennial Park to get our walk in. I managed 2 miles, though CtE took more frequent breaks and made about 1/2 a mile. (The walk around the lake is half a mile, so I plan for four laps.) Still, the important thing is that they got out there and tried walking. I’m not sure what our walk will look like tomorrow - I have a 10am appointment to get fitted for a new CPAP mask. It’s supposed to be in the 90s tomorrow and I’d rather not be walking during the heat of the day. So I may try to get the two of us up and out the door to the nearby park fairly early so I can shower and head back out to make my appointment. Or I may have us walk around the complex in the evening until we make 2 miles. Or maybe hit the treadmill in the complex’s gym. Tomorrow will be what it will be.

In the meantime, here’s a picture from when we finished our walk this morning. I’m trying to keep up with documenting that too.

I realized last night that I haven’t updated on Dad in a bit. He’s actually doing fairly well. They’ve moved him from hemodialysis to peridialysis about a week ago. He likes not having to leave the house and having a portable dialysis machine that works while he’s sleeping. He’s also moving around a lot better now that he has the floors replaced. Not nearly as much falling as he’d had, plus he has PT and the nurse both still stopping by, which I know helps. He, of course, is more worried about me because of my trip to the ER, but that’s what good family does. Monday, I’m going out to pick him up to take him to an appointment to make sure his port is placed correctly. Thursday, he’ll need to go back to the same doctor to have it placed better. Or something. I’ll find out more Monday. I’m hoping to combine the trip his way with stopping by my bonus sister’s locksmith shop to have someone there make copies of my van keys. Having just one is a pain in the butt.

On my way to walk this morning, I was called by the endoscopy lab to get me set up. Unfortunately, they didn’t have any openings until August, so August 15, Hubby will be taking me in for the same procedure he had done in April (I think). The appointment setter started to tell me when I needed to be there, what I needed to do and I just chuckled. “My husband gets a colonoscopy every year and an endoscopy every five. I’m very familiar with the procedures.” I think it made his job easier for him because he knew that I was good. The hard part is going to be moderating my diet for the next few months. Staying away from fried foods isn’t as much of a problem. I’ve not really been into fried foods of late. But staying away from carbonation and acidic foods (like pizza) is going to be the real difficulty. I’ve already had to change my regular Sonic drink order from Diet Cherry Vanilla Diet Doctor Pepper to Sweet Tea with Mango (I tried it will unsweet and I can’t really drink it - the mango doesn’t really come through.) Well, they do say that you need to keep changing because stagnation means death, so I’ll work my way through this change too.

Now I’d better go get some of my cleaning done. At least I don’t have to leave the house again today! Have a great morning/afternoon/evening all! {{{Everyone}}}

First day of Senior Finals. All my classes had projects due, in lieu of a formal test. So far I’m impressed by their creativity. As usual, students are baffled by what I write in their yearbooks. Before Google Translate I would write pithy phrases in Latin. Now I have to do it in Maori or Klingon.

June Gloom has taken over for Gray May. Better than temps in the 90s, anyway.

Oh boy, does that ever bring back some memories!

Congrats on making it through another school year. Teachers are amazing, there is no way I could do what they do without bitch-slapping idiot parents in my first month (week).

Due to everyone’s support of my desire for an expensive electric pot, I have set myself the goal to find another buyer and then order the pot. There is no way I’ll ever make enough to actually pay for the pot but at least I will feel better about it!

Today was Tai-chi and NF traded me a yummy cup of coffee for a couple of dozen eggs. She said her husband was pretty happy to know that she had found a place to get fresh eggs cause they taste so much better than factory eggs. I think I got the better end of the deal, though. I love the coffee from the little shop by her, but am too lazy to drive all the way to get some.

The early release for Diablo 4 is in 3 hours, 42 minutes and 19 seconds according to their timer. If you all notice the interwebz slowing down, that will be why.

Hubs was fussing over dinner tonight and I offered to pick up a pizza, but he thinks it would be better for him to pick up a fancy-pants frozen pizza so we don’t have to leave the house after it’s game on. One of us is more excited about this than the other one…

Lol! Reminds me of my WoW playing days! Also played Diablo, but WoW was prettier.

If only you folks would be mundane instead of so darned interesting, my replies wouldn’t be as long. OK, OK, they would still be long because I can’t shut up.

I got my hair cut yesterday. Arrrrgh! She decided on her own to cut the back VERY short and leave the front longer. No offense to anyone, but I HATE this hairstyle. Now it’s on my head. When I go back in July, I’ll tell her to leave the back of my head alone. In the meantime, I shall sulk.

It depends on the teacher and the maturity level of the kid. There’s a tricky kind of balancing act teachers can do. For instance, you pitch a more complex question to the Smartypants, then do a quick but casual rephrasing of the answer for the other kids. We were supposed to put really advanced kids on a contract–basically doing guided independent study. I always offered, but the kids always wanted to stay in class. They said they didn’t want to miss the discussions and my mini-lectures. :woman_shrugging:

They did this at my school for a few years, but then they got 8 mobile classrooms they parked behind the convent. My sister was in one. She hated having to bundle up and walk a block to go to the bathroom.

I did have some nice teachers in Catholic school, as did my siblings and friends. I think the problem was the teacher shortage and low pay, so nuns who shouldn’t have taught were pressed into service. And they weren’t about to turn kids away. But my sisters went to a Catholic HS and all the nuns were nice there. And people like CatGlove who went in later eras have all had positive experiences.

MetalMouse, I’m ashamed to say that we Catholic school kids looked down on the CCD kids, whom we only saw at First Confession, First Communion, etc. They had religion once a week instead of daily, so they didn’t know (or twitch) as much. Plus, we interpreted their relatively relaxed state as wimpiness. It was like guys who fought at Guadalcanal looking down at the guys who were strictly stateside.

I’m a lapsed Catholic. I’m angry about some things the Church has done, but I’ve always been able to separate the religion from the people who run it. And you know who first taught me that? A nun. She was subbing for our class and said there were “God’s laws” (the commandments) and “church laws,” (no meat on Fridays), and the latter weren’t as important.

God Bod, a huge CONGRATULATIONS on graduating! I can’t wait to find out what your next adventure will be!

Oopsie, I like the Eiffel Tower elevated best. Interesting stuff on those shelves!

Cookie, so sorry about the credit card stuff! Been there, done that, threw rocks.

red, good point on not watering during the heat of the day! I do water in the daytime, but then, my fuchsia are in the forest shade and not in Boiling Rocks, AZ.

Ugh. I’m so sorry…also impressed you turned out so well despite this.

Niner (Is that your Mumper name?) Fingers crossed on the job!

She’s on YouTube. Definitely not something to watch with your Aunt Agnes! Also, good luck on the stomach woes.

This is so great! My city has already painted one set of crosswalks blue and pink to honor the transgendered. I haven’t seen others yet, but I’m sure there are rainbow colors, etc. Even though I’m straight and cis-gendered, the acceptance is so reassuring.

Sari, those are great puppy names! How do you pronounse “Misiu”?

Doggio, that’s quite a dream. If you dream of Charles in his royal undies, you get two martinis with a thorazine chaser.

dogbutler that is an amazing song!

Apparently we’re just skipping spring this year. I went from having the heat on a week ago to it being 90 degrees out.

My folks are coming for a visit this weekend, so’s I prolly otta break out the roll-suck. And hide the christmas presents I’ve already gotten. (I’m trying a new thing this year and getting prezzies throughout the year when I think of something good.)

Went on a lunch outing with the halt and the lame today. It’s a newly opened Laotian place and it was outstanding. Best calamari I’ve had. And they didn’t dumb down the spicing to Midwest America standards. AND it’s close by! Win x however many that is.

Howdy Y’all! Lots of sloth and uselessness this fine day. We napped. We day drank out by the cee-mint pond. I cooked sup. We et. OYKW cleanded up. Now we continue with sloth and uselessness. Ah, the joys of retirement!

sensei I admit I had to look up most of it, but your meal does sound good.

cookie by not dumbin’ the spices down to midwestern standards, do you mean they used salt and pepper? Adventurous!

And they put mayo on it! Woo-hoo!

Had a lazy day in my chair punctuated by a 90 minute nap in bed. Yaay!

Dinner was half a groc store roast chix, a mandarin, and a pile of nuts. Chocolate and gin are probably next.
