Both the “Women in Leadership” happy hour and the live jazz in DC were great! I’m a little tired today, but it was worth it.
Today is Bailey’s adoptiversary/“gotcha” day! 15 years ago, my ex-bf and I walked out of a rescue group’s adoption event with a 9-pound, 3-month old ball of fur wearing a small blue collar and a tag that said “Bailey.” I’d picked out the name “Charlie” but my ex was never crazy about it, and we both liked “Bailey” so it stuck.
We actually almost didn’t get her. We had a slight edge in that my ex worked from home, but there was also a woman interested who was going to be able to take the puppy to the office with her. The rescue’s rule for puppies was that if there were two or more equally qualified applicants, the names would be drawn from a hat; the woman won! We were talking with someone from the rescue about a pregnant dog they had when the woman called her boss (in front of us) to let him know: he told her that the office policy was going to be changing soon, and dogs wouldn’t be allowed! I felt bad for her, but we got the puppy!!
Seven months later the relationship was over, but the deal had always been that the new puppy was my dog; he already had a then-five-year-old Beagle. Luckily, she’d bonded way more with me. The two of us moved out, and our saga began.
In other news, I decided to get some holiday LEGO sets. Yesterday I ordered the wreath, the tree, and Santa’s sleigh. I also ordered the nutcracker, as a sort-of-gag-gift for a friend who collects nutcrackers. I have no idea how she feels about LEGO, but I figure if she doesn’t want it I’ll keep it.
Same here! I only got the summons once or twice, but I didn’t have to show up either time. I never even got that until I moved to Virginia, at the age of 27. I know jury duty is often quite boring, but I wouldn’t mind doing it at least once.
Slightly gooey whomp biscuits/croissants are the best!
Not only is that what we’re here for, but think of it this way: when life really blows up – as it does for all of us from time to time – you’ll be able to vent as needed and we’ll already have the background.
I’m assuming you also have a guitar?
Could it be that all of the little tabs are already pushed down? Did you try lifting any of 'em?
Ain’t it purty? I think I’m going to make some bread just to be sure the bread hook works. I’m also going to make a batch of the chocolate crinkle cookies because that is a super stiff dough. Then I’ll mess around with pie crust because I don’t want to blame the tool because the user is incompetent.
Howdy Y’all! We procured provisions and then had the chili/cheese/onion/slaw dawgs and oven fries for N.O.L. Then we achieved nappage and fartfest. Day drinkin’ was beerverages out on the back porch. Life is good.
JtC the mixer is purty!
Oopsie Bailey was a cutie then and is a cutie now!
shoe glad you’re less sinusy.
Pilot you won’t see this, I’m sure, but have a fun trip!
Good morning. The sun is coming out, so maybe it’ll warm up enough to go for a walk. I foolishly brought only a hoodie, so I’d better walk fast, as it’s only in the 40s now.
I got a sad phone call this morning. Mom had some wonderful friends and neighbors, the T’s, who loved her and stayed in her life even after she moved away. The husband, Jay, called to say his wife is in hospice with vascular dementia. He tried caring for her at home, but as anyone who’s been through this knows, it gets to be impossible. It was heartrending to hear him cry. They’ve been married for 64 years, and she was a lively and loquacious person, so the hole is large and deep. So hard.
Meanwhile, I’m getting spoiled. Son and wife have a gas stove. I LOVE gas stoves but never get to have one. Turn it on, and it’s hot! Turn it off, and it’s not! So much more precise than electric stoves. And I’m also getting a kick out of asking Alexa stuff like what the weather forecast is or what year Kurt Cobain died. AND they have a bidet. I love bidets.
cookie, that sounds like a great tour! I love old houses and hearing the history behind them.
FCM, I hope something can be worked out for BIL and his unfortunate combination of characteristics. I wish I had an answer. And Tobias seems like such a fun little guy!
Argh! This is my third attempt at posting. I got interrupted by a phone call from my sister.
MetalMouse, nothing sweeter than not having to pay for stuff because you earned cashback credits! My grocery store gives out points that go to free gas at their pumps. I wish I could donate mine to someone who uses gas.
Pilot, that’s one wonderful daughter! Good foster parents are gems . Wheelz, that was a close call! Glad the kitty is OK.
There absolutely are abusive assholes who try to do just that. Get a passel of foster toddlers, don’t feed them, totally ignore them, and pocket all that sweet, sweet government money for themselves. Surprisingly, Florida is very big on preventing that, but some other states aren’t nearly as careful. Likewise rural versus urban makes a difference. Out in the sticks, no one can hear you cry.
There is no lower limit to how evil humans can be.
Aawww! How cute! It’s love at first mix.
They are fun gizmos. Just keep your fingers the heck out of that thing.
My intent was “buy a worn-out one at a garage sale for sacrificial candle-making purposes.” But as you say, 50 years ago that was tougher; there wasn’t the density of fully functional cast-offs that we see now.
Yaay!!! Great story about Bailey’s provenance. Some things are meant to be.
Aww Nellie, that’s rough. There’s no happy exit off this rock, but some are a lot worse than others.
Turned my phone on after we landed and got a text from a cousin out in the SF Bay Area. Her Mom = my aunt, had been in slow-moving hospice for a few months now for unmanageable breast cancer. She was in her mid 80s and until then had been a super-vigorous woman. The text tells me Mom/Aunt died a few days ago and they’re just getting around to notifying the far-flung family.
Prior to her getting too weak she’d spent the last 4+ years caring for her equally aged husband who was slowly going out with senility of some sort while her mind was still as strong as ever.
He’s not a basket case (yet), but the family has no clue how they’re going to manage him without her. The only upside is the 4 daughters = my cousins & Mom & Dad all live in the same metroblob, and they’re all comfy class, so finding and affording a care home and professional help won’t be too logistically difficult. Will still be heart-wrenching. There’s no good way off this rock.
This also means I’m now the oldest surviving blood relative I know of. There’s probably an older cousin someplace on another branch of the family tree, but I don’t know them or even know of them.
My vacation is off to a wet start; we drove an hour through the Costa Rican countryside in heavy rain to get to the seaside village. Have settled on “downtown” cheap & cheerful accommodations for this night, and had lunch & beers outdoors under an open roof while rain and lightning crashed down everywhere. The tropics are like that. Now later afternoon the rain is lightening up in time to go seek more food and drink, with time with music.
It has passed all of the tests I’ve thrown at it today. It isn’t overly loud and despite a lot of vibration while kneading the bread dough it didn’t heat up. The cookie dough didn’t faze it either.
I’m not a huge fan of the splash guard, but I think I will like it better when I’m mixing liquids, it was hard to add the dry ingredients through the pour hole. It also isn’t required.
The rubber feet work almost too well, I like to push things around when I’m working around them and I had to stop and pick it up to move it. That’s still a good thing, it means it won’t dance off the counter.
Clean up was easy, there aren’t many nooks and crannies for flour to find.
So far we’ve had good experiences with the Instant brand, here’s hoping we will get the same utility out of this one.
A covid-type face mask for irk when you get by the allergies hides a multitude of snot.
Good to see you back sari!
Bailey was a pretty puppy and a pretty girl now oopsie.
Nice mixer JtC!
Irked (IB got the oh nosies when she remembered that I am off tomorrow and my old job was backed up, so I was over there all day. She may get it at some point.
I ordered house special soup and an aig roll from the cheap Chinese down the street before I left the irk parking lot, so just swung through for supper.
Gee, where did everyone go? Been to the gym and got 750 yards of backstroking done along with whirlpool and sauna and came home to some ham-n-cheese, so it’s been a good evening. Mail, as it has been recently, was mostly organizations wanting money, well, I’m sure they are for good causes but right now they simply give my shredder some work.
FCM, had never heard of Turtles crackers before (just looked at the local Kroger and Wal-Mart sites and nope).
shoe, used to have them years back, but don’t remember how they worked. Hope the next one does.
JtC, if I 'm reading it right, you’re moderately happy with your new mixer…
Oopsie, Happy Bailey day and thanks for the story and the pics; hope the other woman was able to adopt later on.
FCM, what she said.
nellie, sad news about Mom’s friends, most of us do not get to go out with any dignity at all, wish we could (of course, I’m planning to live forever).
Yeah, my Kroger card saves me about .10-.40 cents a gallon each month, depening how much buying I do there.
Pilot, that’s the thing about travel, you pays your money and you takes your chances; hope it clears up soon. Nice pics.
Sad but true.
Also sad but true.
OK, evening exercise doesn’t leave much time for evening internetting, so everybody take care and I’ll catch up with you tomorrow.
Only a slightly busy day.
The house is pretty well cleaned out except for a few items and the cleaning stuff. We have ‘College Hunks Hauling Junk’ coming out Moonday to get the last eight pieces of furniture.
We, meaning my son, will do a final vacuum and carpet shampoo, and mop the floors. I’ll give the toilets the final swipe.
Then I’m going to get some house cleaners in to do a deep professional cleaning.
We need to do a dump run, clean up the back yard, and get the last few things out of the shed.
I’d like for everything to be done by Moonday, so my son gets a week off before going back to irk on the 7th.
I took one last bath in my walk-in tub.
Richard got one garage door opener installed. He got the other one started today, but since we weren’t home, he couldn’t finish. He needs my son’s help with it.
Now I get to practice backing into the garage. Everybody tells me to use the backup camera, but honestly, I think that is harder.
I’m going to try to make it to the dog park tomorrow. Jax’s mom is supposed to be there and I haven’t seen her in months, probably close to a year. I think Barky/Humpy mom is mad at me because I haven’t been going, but I can’t help that. She jumped all over me the other morning because we didn’t go because my son was tired. She said I should have just gotten movers and done everything all at once, and I was wrong to dump it on my son. Well… my son wanted to do it. At any point he could have said he had enough and to hire movers. Even now, he wants to do the rest himself, but he physically can’t move what is left by himself. I told him, NO, because if the movers break anything, they have to pay for it. If he breaks it, we have to buy new. If he hurts himself, then he is out of irk.
Once all of this is done, then we can start repairs on the other house. Squirrels got in again. Richard wants to buy the house ‘rent to own’, but he just lost his job, so I don’t know if that is still an option. I’d rather just get it done and sell it. Investors have been buying a bunch of properties on my street, so maybe one of them will come up with an offer I can live with.
The new house bath, I am looking into options. I need to replace the shower head and hose, I know.
I’m debating getting another walk-in tub. If I do, I want to get pros to install it in one day, which costs a lot, as opposed to getting somebody else to do it cheaper and going without a shower for a few days.
Richard does good irk, but he is slow at getting things done.
I’ve had a lot done though, and I think it’s time to slow down and reassess what we are doing.
Bailey was and is a cutie. They change so much, don’t they?
Adam is still at the old house. We were going to make a second trip over, but didn’t.
We finally made it to the cable place to turn in our boxes and get disconnected. We didn’t make it to the police station. We found a wallet in our back yard and need to turn it in. We have to turn in Ripple’s chemo drugs too.
The list never ends.
