(Old) Halfway through the month - Midway in the MMP

I hand-wash my non-stick Calphalon pans. (In actuality, I hand-wash my stainless steel Calphalon pans too.) I replaced my 10-inch and 12-inch non-stick ones in 2015. Still going strong. I actually have an 8-inch Kitchen-Aid, rather heavy, non-stick pan that I bought about 30 years ago that has only recently started losing it’s non-stickishness.

I have a buildup of crust around the inside edge of my 12-inch cast-iron frying pan, which is the one I use most. I’m about ready to take a wire brush to it and re-season it.

I skimmed along, but am too tired to comment at this point. Had a good first day of class. Very long and information filled, but good.

Me: < awakens >
Spot: “You only slept eight hours. Do you have insomnia or something?”
But I’m up, and having a cheeseburger, fries, and an Old Fashioned.

I do butter and cinnamon, and sometimes Ancho Chili powder.

Oh no! I’ve been infrected by it!

I love to swim. I was amazed to find out that Sunflower was afraid of water and could not swim, so I spent the first summer we were dating to teach her. She is still not comfortable in the water but can do laps as long as she is still able to touch the bottom.

I am hitting the pool tomorrow. I can hardly wait.

Just got off the phone with my “Monday night chat with the mother.”

Who has … questions … about my lovely friend on FB who - watch pronouns carefully now - lost her wife.

My mother had … many questions. About things. And I had to not-so-gently point out that, we don’t ask questions like that about a husband/wife couple, so why do we need to ask about a wife/wife?

“I just wanted to know!”

We ended the call semi-amicabilly.

Here’s how I started my post this morning: I have a friend coming over shortly, but by gum, I’m going to post before the MMP hits 100 posts!

Yesterday was practically wall-to-wall phone calls, but in a brief pause between beloved relative and beloved relative, I heard a buzzing sound. ??? It turned out my sonic toothbrush had randomly turned itself on. A ghost with gingivitis? I turned it off. 30 seconds later, it turned itself on again…and again. There’s no way to take out the rechargeable battery, and we’re not supposed to throw those in the trash. I called my BIL, the electrical engineer. He suggested letting it run down.

“Oh, my gosh, that could take weeks. I just recharged it two days ago. Could I take it to Best Buy? Maybe they could dispose of it like they do laptops? But then, I’d be buzzing in the mall.”

“People will just assume it’s a vibrator.

“Only if I’m smiling.”

You can see how helpful he was. It finally quit after 2 hours. And it works just fine now. I ordered another one, though, as I had visions of it buzzing itself off the counter, down the hall, and into my bedroom late at night. “Time for a cavity check!” :astonished:

My friend came over, and we had tea and got caught up. We were talking about B&B’s and hotels, and it reminded me of this incident. My daughter (then 16) and I stopped at a hotel. I went to get another load from the car while she took a shower, and when I returned, the door was cracked, which I thought was odd, but the shower was running. I put the stuff on a bed and sat down for a moment. Then I saw a man’s wallet on the nightstand. Egad! Wrong floor, wrong room! I flew out of there. Good thing I didn’t stick my head in the bathroom door and say, “Are you almost done?” :flushed:

I laundered the bed linens. I love slipping into a clean, fresh bed, don’t you? Especially when it’s my own. (I apologize for the lurid stuff in this post. Somebody please wash my brain out with soap.)

Is goat milk sold in grocery stores? Also, have you ever had it fresh? What does it taste like? I’ve only had it in cheese.

That sounds cool–and challenging. I think you need a Lego version of Mount Rushmore, if they make such a thing, to go with your other presidential stuff.

Were you able to speak with someone, and if so, why don’t they know? I hope you get an answer–and TP–soon!

But January is halfway over (almost), and February is a short month!

My sister says, “I’m not nosy. I’m just interested in people.”

Time for the late-night final. Meeting went well, we elected a new Regional Commissioner, the present guy has been the Comish for about 4-5 years and was ready for a break. Two excellent candidates, who fortunateley get along great so no hard feelings there. Since I was only a 2-minute drive from the gym, put an extra hour in there and therefore could snack with too much of a guilty conscience (and most of it was applesauce and carrots, so nutrition!). Have bagged all the stuff I’m giving to Purple Heart and will put it out tomorrow morning for pickup. Will probably head off to bed once this is complete.

Never had a cast-iron skillet to the best of my memory, but I take that putting it in the dishwasher is grounds for being hanged, drawn and quartered so I will add that in my “list of things not to do lest i be hanged, drawn and quartered…”

JtC, happy cheese making when the timing is right. And spent about 45 minutes in the hot tub and 30 more in the sauna, so that should help. And WOW on the home insurance. I paid about $2,300 for the entire year in 2024, it was an increase but not like that.

Hippie, welcome to the MMP swimming club. made it 2 miles today, took a little longer than usual but I started earlier so took more jacuzzi (and reading) time.

shoe, does Mom know about all the folks you hang out here with?

nellie, I laughed out loud at the hidden quote you masked about the out-of-control toothbrush. And I concur, I wouldn’t trust that thing either.

And it’s approaching 11pm, the tackleball is over for the night, and I’m tired. Catch up with all y’all tomorrow.

Also be aware:

Handwashing cast iron with soap or detergent will get you hanged too, just not also drawn and quartered. That’s saved for those offenders most vile.

Now that we have a gas stove again, I’m delighted to have my cast iron pan out of storage. I mean, I took that thing to the Middle East when I was working there.   :fried_egg:

Off to bed. We got new flannel sheets last week, and they’re sooooft.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave.

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 6c/42f with a precited high of 8c/47f, and cloudy. Weather app says “It’s cloudy, but I checked my fucking pockets, and I have zero fucks to give.” Looks like someone else has had enough of January too!

I hope you enjoy it, sounds like you’re very excited! I hope Sunflower might be persuaded to come along and try a few laps too.

Better than the alternative! It’s a shame she’s asking awkward questions though, some people just can’t let other folks get on with their lives.

Moooom sorry I stole your MMP this week  Why don’t you bag next week’s MMP instead?

Lily thank you so much for sending me the link to your poetry - it is a beautiful piece, puts me right in that place  And the illustration around it is a perfect match to your words.

I had a busy day yesterday - got up as usual to do feline tums and bums, then took 'im indoors to the station for his train, worked until lunchtime, then went to do the grocery shopping, came home and had some food, logged into an afternoon meeting, then did a couple more hours work afterwards.

When I finished, I cleared some space in the living room (shifted all the cat toys!), plugged my laptop into the big tellybox and did a Rockfit class. It had some good old songs in it, so that was fun. Might do it again today. I didn’t do much for the rest of the evening because Shadow demanded lap time so most of the night I was pinned to the sofa by my 4kg feline overlord.

I did get up long enough to make a mixed pepper omelette for dinner, washed up and then emptied the bins. It’s rubbish day today so I hauled the biiiiiig bin out to the kerb last night as I have no idea what time the binmen will be around.

Time for another cuppa and some breakfast!

Due to an incident when I was a small child, I never learned how to swim until my best friend invited me to go to water aerobics with her. I am not a great swimmer, but thanks to all my time in the pool having fun, I am no longer afraid of the water.

Er, I read that as semi-automatically.

Dude. I didn’t know that you could communicate with cheese! How cool.

I’ll take an omelette and maybe some little chocolate donuts if you don’t mind!

Well, I’m up a bit early, but that’s ok. It gives me more time to spend with my poor, neglected poodle who was left all alone (not really) yesterday. In a couple hours I’ll head up north again. Yesterday’s class was fairly interesting, but very long. I hope that today is interesting as well. One of the nice things is the interactions between persons who are in recovery from mental health issues vs persons in recovery from addiction/substance abuse. I think there have been some light bulb moments in both directions.

I could not fall asleep til 1 a.m. its now 6 and I am returning to sleep.
Goat cheese wants things!
Is there a cheese log that poops presents?

Mornin’ everyone.

It’s 37F and cloudy at the moment. It’ll be a little foggy this morning, clearing off to partly cloudy skies in the afternoon, and our high temperature is expected to be 41F.

JtC, thanks again for the information on the embroidery site. I directed my daughter to the site; she told me yesterday that she’s excited to check it out.

It looks like the package finally arrived at the post office near my daughter’s town sometime in the wee hours of the morning. So far, it’s been nine days since it shipped. I am hopeful she’ll get it today.

I guess we need to start doping Buster up when we take him to the vet now too. According to the vet, he was a little spun up, but honestly, I think it was her. She seemed a little nervous around him. Both the dogs received their vaccinations, including rabies, and Buster is on allergy meds and antibiotics. He’s got some weird infection going on. I need to take him back on the 28th for a follow-up. The allergy meds may or may not be permanent. It could be a seasonal thing, or it could be something else. It’ll take a while to work that out, I guess.

After dropping off the pups and my husband at home, I turned around and headed to Costco. I didn’t come home with a lot, just some stuff to get us through a couple of meals and some TP and coke. I was down to my last pack. Now, don’t faint, Swampy. I thought I had another whole package Costco pack in the closet and was shocked, I say, shocked, to discover I was wrong. The TP crisis has been averted.

Nice work on the Pac-Man Lego, Oopsie!

It’s back to work today, but fortunately, I’m working from home. Tomorrow is an in-office day. The day will be long; besides work and too many meetings, there will be a farewell potluck for the outgoing Director (a political appointee), and in the evening, we’re taking her out for dinner. I haven’t decided whether to stay in Olympia at my son’s place or head home. I’ll probably head home because Thursday is a work-from-home day.

It’s time for another cup of coffee. I hope you all have a smooth and easy day.

Yeah - I don’t understand why some people care so much about others’ personal lives. Well, yeah, I do - there’s apparently a satisfaction to being judgemental. You can almost see it on the face.

As for the next MMP - if I’m up in time, I’ll certainly do it. but I’m not going to deliberately wake to be first. I remember a time when I started several in a row! I also remember a time when we “signed up” to take then next one. There was even a keeper-of-the-sign-up-list. Anyway, my “topic” isn’t related to a time period or an event, so it’ll work whenever.

I wish I could swim - swim properly, that is. I have no fear of water and I can propel myself from one place to another. It’s not pretty, but I get there. The main problem is my nose - if any water gets in, I choke and gag. It wasn’t that way when I was a kid, but at some point in my late teens, I had to use a clip. Plus I was never really taught proper strokes.

On the other hand, when I was in the Navy, I did swim a mile, twice, in survival swim classes. We had to wear a flight suit and they didn’t really care how we propelled ourselves as long as we did the mile. And there was no time limit. It took me right around an hour doing a modified back stroke, but I did it. I’d rather tread the mill or use the bike, as I did last night.

It appears FCD’s vehicular issue is getting worse. He drove it fine yesterday after getting a start from my car, but it’s dead again this morning. He’s got an appointment on Thursday to get it looked at. He wants to take it over there Weds night and let them see it dead in the morning. And no, it’s not the cold. Our garage stays at least in the 40s, even on the coldest nights.

Today’s high is forecast to be 34°. Same for tomorrow. In fact, it’s supposed to be below average till Saturday, when we’re promised rain. I need to check next week in Ocean City to decide if we’ll ever venture out. I’m not going to walk on the beach if temps are in the 30s.

As for today - well, whatever happens is what happens.

Happy Tuesday!

I almost drowned when I was three. My teenaged older sisters were supposed to be watching me but went out to a dock to flirt with some boys. I saw them and decided to walk out there. One of boys saw me and they fished me out. This was sixty eight years ago and I can recall every second of it. I can still see the glimmer of the sun on the water that had closed over my head and see the darkness. It didn’t cause me to fear the water though.

She is as excited about the gym as I am.

Thanks

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN I was a slug abed until almost seven-thirty.:sleeping_bed::zzz: ‘Tis 33 Amurrkin out and N.O.S. with a predicted high of 53 and N.O.S. The big item on today’s agenda is laundry. I can hardly contain myself. The rest of the day shall be spent in RD inactivities as is our wont. I took some beast stew outta da freezer. That and cornbread shall be sup.

The oldest member of the church has died at the age of a hunnert and two. She really hadn’t known anyone for the last six months. She was a great person and one I described often as a classic beauty. Seriously she would not dare set foot in public unless her hair, jewelry, outfit and so forth were just so.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Tuesday Y’all!

Egad! Woke up to a chilly house. It’s 62 in here. We just got a new furnace and thermostat, and it’s not working right. The service guy just got here. I suppose he’ll figure it out. At least the coffeemaker works.

Good morning all. Donation stuff for Purple Heart is at the curb to be picked up and fast has been broken so the two early morning things have been done. Have two appointments today, one with the gym I’m a member of to discuss doing different training than I am now doing and the second with my Edward Jones financial adviser. I imagine I’ll work some gym time, reading, and internetting in their too. It’s 27F but heading to 47F later in the day and no rain to be seen.

Then as a matter of curiosity, how do you clean it (I presume it needs to be cleaned at least once in a while)?

Pretty much describes my swimming stroke these days; to borrow from another source, I don’t glide smoothly through the water, I beat it into submission. And it takes me about an hour to do a mile these days.

FCM, I hope the car problem gets diagnosed this time, it’s got to be frustrating.

Hippie, that was a close call when you were young, I can remember (dimly) being out at a public beachwhen I was around 5-6 and surfacing right in front of the sliding board they had–with predictable results. Got carried out of the water by my Dad and apparently suffered no permanent damage, but it didn’t dissuade me from going in the water.

swampy, sorry to hear the church member has passed; my goal is to make it to 90 with most of my wits intact, anything after that is gravy.

Knotty, Brrrrrr…hope they can get that fixed for you fast.

And onward into the day. Have a good one all.

FCD thinks it might just be the battery, even tho when I suggested that last week, he scoffed at the idea. No matter - I’ll leave it to the pros to diagnose and repair.

I decided to get my own Prime account - I’ve been using my daughter’s for a couple of years but for the cost, it’s just not worth the hassle of switching accounts to save shipping costs. Now to decide if it’s worth $3/month to get rid of the stupid commercials - I’m thinking it just might be,

Bright sunshine, clear skies, and cold cold COLD out there. It’s even just 60° in the basement. But a nice, toasty 72° in the main living areas, thanks to the pellet stove. I’m tired of winter. I want spring, dammit!
