(Old) Happy New Year 2024 MMP

At 1847 it’s 35F/2C, wind chill 27F/-3C, low tonight 32F/0C. Winter weather advisory in effect until 1800 tomorrow: 100% chance of rain & snow tonight, 90% tomorrow, with 1-4 inches of snow predicted. (I’m assuming we’ll get around two inches.) Doesn’t seem to be anything coming down yet… Oh, and there’s a coastal flood advisory in effect 0400-1000 tomorrow, but I highly doubt that will prove to be a problem.

Lady SCAdian works ~15 miles farther inland; they have a winter storm warning in effect until 1800 tomorrow, same odds of precipitation, but 4-6 inches of snow. She worked today and is working again tomorrow, so they’re giving her a hotel room at the casino tonight so she won’t have to deal with the roads.

Mortality… I really had not expected to see this year arrive. My brother died a week or two after his 46th birthday, my sister a couple weeks before her 56th. My dad died at 58, my other sister at 67, and my mother at 69 – and I’m now a week or so older than she was when she died. Wonder what I’ve been doing right.

Howdy Y’all! We are back at da cave after the Epiphany soiree. Actually been home bout half an hour, but had to get in comfies and all that first. It was nice and with a bigger attendance than I had anticipated, so yay for that. Back again tomorrow for more big eats at first Sunday brunch. Oh and there will be a church service too.

Oopsie sorry about your co-volunteer.

All of you experiencin’ snow, well, better thee than me.

Spinach-and-feta salmon pinwheels, and creamed spinach with feta for dinner tonight. Should I slice some feta to go with it?

Thank you to all for the prayers and the best wishes. Very much appreciated!!! Additionally I appreciate the support.

So far things are going ok. He’s had 3 rounds of chemo and still has an appetite and no nausea. The PT told him to do laps of the hematology pod. She did the first walk with him then daughter & I have been doing laps with him each time we go. They have a neat thing in the halls. It’s those letter jumbles boards where you have to find all the words. There were about 6 different ones. Daughter helped him with the NFL teams one yesterday and the ice cream flavors one today. I helped with the candy one today. I bought a pack of dry erase markers on the way today so that he has his own marker. Two reasons: people keep appropriating the ones that the nurses put out by the boards so it’s hard to find one and more importantly germs.

Hubs’ doc certainly was realistic both times we met with her prior to admission. She emphasized that there is a 50% mortality rate; 25% because of problems accepting the donor stem cells and 25% from other causes.

They do it because in addition to the normal fees charged by the credit card processor, there are fees charged by the on-line intermediary. They’re not doing it to be cheezy, it’s because it’s a fee they have to pay so they pass it on.

Daughter went back to Chicago this afternoon. Thankfully it was before it was snowing here and she must have encountered decent weather because she made it there in 5 hrs with a potty break for Bella.

Welp, when I signed on, there were 125 posts to read, now there are 102, so I made some progress. Need to sign off now. Will try to catch you all on the next MMP. (Stem cell transplant on Thursday).

*woof* Just finished dinner. It was good. I avoid farmed salmon, but TJ’s Norwegian farmed salmon has always been good.

I had a bourbon cocktail before dinner.

Recipe:

Summary

Pour Maker’s Mark bourbon into a glass.

I had a glass of cabernet sauvignon with dinner, because I only drink white wine when we’re out of red… which we never are. Now I’m having a Johnnie Walker Black Label with a squirt of water.

That looks like a grand idea! I’m glad Bailey approves.

I am pretty sure that you are right, that it being a totally different device would make a difference. I don’t feel quite so crazy now, LOL!

Attention whores, drama queens…they are all the same, jerkface kittycats!!!

I think most everyone overspends at least a little during the holidays. Gift cards are awesome any time of the year.

So, I’ve never been to a drive-through pizza place, how does that work? Do they order at one window and then wait half an hour in line to get their pizza or do you get their number (pretty girl asking for phone numbers is never a bad idea, right?) and call them to get back in line when their pie is done? Give them a number and park them?

I have a wood nightstand in front of the bird watching window. It has a folded quilt on top because our spoiled cats cannot be expected to lay on hard wood while drooling over the flying fuds.

Yesterday I took the quilt off to wash, but left it in the dryer over night. This morning, GG jumped up to chitter at the flying fuds but didn’t find any traction and smacked into the window, causing all of the birdies to fly away. GG is has the best pout of any critter I’ve ever met!

That is pretty terrifying, but I guess it is better than the odds if the transplant isn’t done. I’m glad he is still tolerating the treatment well.

I’m seeing doggio posting and I need to know how the meet up went before saying anything else. Fingers are crossed!

Many more prayers on the way.

So I met up with Ace and his foster dad. I think the boy has some Rhodesian Ridgeback in hi. He is fascinated by cars and falling leaves. And most importantly he likes going to bars. So he will be coming home at noon tomorrow. and I have a Sazarac and hockey, so life is good.

One time Alex Catt was scratching the ottoman and I yelled “NO!” at her. She looked at me, raised up her right paw and slooowwwllllyyy raked it down the ottoman.

He’s even better looking in person.
And sorry to hear about your volunteer.

Right down to needing to be reminded to only eat the treat, and not the fingers.

there were so many wrecks in the rain on the way to the meet, you’d think we got 6 inches of snow and a half inch of ice.

: crosses fingers for the other 50% :

Sending good vibes your way cat glove.

Yay on bringing Ace home tomorrow doggio!

I think that Nelson is getting bored not going to the dog park this weekend. We’ve played a lot of fetch today at his insistence.

W00T!!! :sparkler: :tada: :fireworks:

We’re expecting snow next week (Dammit!), and my wife said she’d ordered a pair of lined pants from L.L. Bean. I went to my closet and pulled out a trash bag ‘protecting’ my old ski clothes. In it was a yellow, The North Face Steep Tech jacket, an REI fleece copy of The North Face one, snow pants, and suspenders. They’re a bit loose on me now, and they smelled. They’ve been washed, and now they smell better.

The ski pants had a ticket from Big Bear from November 1998. My father had died earlier that month. I went to Big Bear to… whatever. I intentionally did not take my skis, so that I would be forced to rent a snowboard for the first time. With my damaged knees, I spend most of the time on me arse, trying to get up. I should have brought my skis. Anyway, that was the last time I went to a ski area. I clipped off the ticket before I washed the pants.

doggio Yay on Ace! I had a mostly rhodie for about 12 years. Hope you and Ace have fabulous times together! We will need pics.

I haz a big happy for all of you!

Spot may need a Sazerac or two tomorrow when she figures out she has to share her hooman. Ain’t no nose out of joint like a kitty nose out of joint.

Damn, that sounds really good!

I did sprinkle some sesame seeds, so I got some crunch that way, but mmmm … cashews … good call, my friend.

I like it.

Especially because she seems like such a thoughtful and generous soul, and not at all like the bitch that “spicy” connotes, and I love the irony.

Does cheese freeze well?

Fancy!

… but I just don’t see myself putting that much work into it, yanno?

If you call ahead, then when you pull up, tell me your name. I’ll find your ticket and tell you to gimme all yr money politely get you rung up, and then either hand over your food, or tell you how much longer it’s gonna be.

If you didn’t call ahead and order at the window, it’s pretty much the same, with me telling you how long it’ll be. (Usually 15-20 min unless we’re really busy.)

If it’s like, a coupla minutes max, I’ll tell you to wait right there (“guy behind you can just be patient for a minute”) or I’ll tell you how much longer it’s gonna be (“come back around in about ten or twelve minutes, hon, thanks!”) so you can piss off drive away and I can handle the line of cars sitting behind you.

At that point, most people get gas, smoke a fat blunt cigarette, or run to the corner store. (“Uh, lemme get me some beers, and imma be right back.” “Okay, buddy, you do that.”)
But since you have paid, there’s a receipt on your ticket, and anyone can hand your food out the window real quick once you come back.

Alternately, you can chill in the lobby and wait till we holler your name.

95-99% of the time, the system works flawlessly.

The most common problems arise when the driver doesn’t know the name or what’s on the order (“Uh, my wife called in … some kind of pizza?”) or when the caller rang a different location and then we all run around looking for a pizza that doesn’t actually exist under our roof, cuz it’s waiting for you at a different franchise.

Otherwise, the timing is generally so precise that - because we can predict quite accurately how long it will be, even for phone-in orders - we have a very good track record of people pulling up for their pizza as it is coming out of the oven. No waiting, no muss, no fuss, and it’s fresh and so hot sometimes people pull a bit of a face when they pick up their box.

I knew someone with a half-black lab, half-ridgeback, and she was a Very Good Dog who combined the best of both (very different) breeds.

I hope you have many happy bar visits together!

That is very good news indeed. We’re all pulling hard for him.

Long Night wasn’t too bad. Having lotsa semi-healthy, filling-but-not-too-heavy food probably helped.
But the job … I dunno, just doesn’t wear on me like it did back when I started.

Good thing, too, cuz I was asked to cover closing for one of the Oven Masters tomorrow instead of being early out. I’m 1a.) always happy to help a co-worker if I can, and more selfishly, 2b.) always happy to get paid for a few more hours if I can take them on.

But 3c.) he made birria tacos a while ago for us, and they were amazing and while he has fine dining kitchen experience and is generally no slouch in the kitchen, these things are involved so I sympathize with him needing more time to get them together, and also, I am more than happy to facilitate those tacos existing in my life again, and more importantly, being shoved into my face-hole again as soon as possible.

At work, he “pan fried” the tortillas by using some of the birria juice in a pizza pan - a 550F oven will sizzle anything.

Not sure how it’ll go at the potluck, but I’m sure 'twill still be delishush.

It can affect the texture, but cheese you’re going to cook with will still be fine, and flavor is not affected by freezing, in my experience. A thawed block is likely to be a bit crumbly when you try to slice it, though.

oopsie So sorry about your volunteer colleague. Sudden deaths are hard. Glad Bailey can sit on the couch again - much cozier.

CatGlove glad to hear hubby doesn’t have any nausea - certainly makes the preparation stage easier. Hope the transplant goes well.

JtC, GG’s probably not happy that I’m laughing at him.

So, next is the Spot test? Hope both critters do well and that you’ll be living up to your user name.

Dishwasher is going, washer is going, bed’s been made, so just need to put away the Christmas decorations. Yesterday’s productive procrastination had me scrubbing the inside of the oven door. I might do some more of that today.

There’s a bit of white stuff outside, with more coming done. But it’s just above freezing, so it’s all going to turn into ice when it drops below freezing and stays there until Saturday. I’d rather have snow, but my vote doesn’t count.

Seems a lot of people have white stuff outside - stay warm!

I feel like a very good rodent owner right now.

I know ASFs are chewing machines. I figured they were getting bored in their admittedly rather small tank by now, having rearranged their new bedding to their satisfaction and tunneled a few burrows.

I had a bag of in-shell hazelnuts in my pantry that I was clearly not gonna get to anytime soon.

Soooooo …

I just tossed in a handful.

It sounds like the world’s tiniest wood chipper brigade in my mudroom right now. Mo-fos are going to town on those things, and I don’t know if it’s just cuz they like to chew or if they can smell they payoff hidden in the center.

If it’s the former … wheee, what a bonus surprise for 'em!

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 41 Amurrkin out and mostly cloudy with a predicted high of 56 and mostly N.O.S. for the day. The big item on today’s agenda is deheathenization followed by first Sunday brunch and our annual meetin’ to elect Vestry members and hear a bunch of reports. The rest of the day will be spent in sloth, nappage, day drinkin’ and other non-productive activities.

doggio yay for Ace comin’ to his forever home tomorrow! I am sure Spot will eventually get used to the loud beast and Ace will get used to the sharp angry puppy.

cat_glove glad hubs has not had nausea with the chemo treatments. Prayers ascend for a successful stem cell transplant.

JtC poor GG! How can he enjoy the flying fuds if he has no comfy quilt upon which to lie.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then purtification for deheathenization must commence.

Happy Sunday Y’all!

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off today. I got up a little early so I could clean before picking up Ace, and watching 10 hours of handegg.

Foster Dad said his cat keeps Ace in his place. The real test is making sure Spot doesn’t kill him in his sleep.

Juding by the drooling, he might have some Bassett in him, too.

Sine I got home and Spot smelled the dog drool on my hand, he’s been following me around, and doing his best Nacy Kerigan imitation: “Whhyy?” “WHHHYYYYYYY?!?

Rain is done - it was a very soggy yesterday, but it should stay dry till Tuesday. West of us - actually west of I95 - apparently there was snow. FedEx informed me that the delivery originally coming today has met with a weather delay somewhere between Cincinnati and here. It’s not a biggie - I’d ordered a replacement car seat for Tobias as he’s way outgrown the one I have. I don’t expect to be transporting him any time soon.

We spent most of yesterday watching assorted TV - Shetland, an Agatha Christie thing with John Malkovich as Poirot, some tackleball, and whatever other miscellany FCD clicked thru. He wants a watch cap for the trip so I found a pattern I like and gave him a choice of yarn - medium gray won. Since it’s a k1, p1 rib, it’s slower going than I like, but I can do it by feel, so watching TV while knitting is an option. Oh, and we never did go to MIL’s to hang pictures. Maybe today, maybe not.

And amazingly, I had a good long sleep. I think I woke a couple of times, looked at the clock, then fell back to sleep. When I finally decided to get up, it was when I realized the blurry number was a 6, not a 5! So huzzah all around! As for today, no idea what we’ll do. Tho I did declare it’s clear-the-fridge-day. There’s leftover ribs, poke, two kinds of soup, some spuds, some salad… The extent of my cooking will be nukeage.

Congrats, doggio!! Here’s hoping Ace and Spot become besties in record time!

Oh, and today, my mom turns 90 and SIL is 35. I guess a couple of texts are in order!

And so it begins. Happy Sunday!

Morning all. Last day of holiday guests for us, and I’m working on the appropriate sad face for departures, at least until their car is out of sight. Then I’ll shriek with glee and climb into the hot tub with a bottle of champagne. Seriously, love 'em, but want my house back, yanno?

It’s 34F here, and s’pose to be sunny and in the 60s later.

Yay to doggio for the new furball! Hope he fits in well.

Since we were speaking of Derpy pets above, I’d like to add one. Here is Lucy (on left) and my daughter’s dog in the living room. Apparently d-dog stuck his tongue out at her, and she’s expressing her horror at this breach of etiquette.

Imgur

This event was followed by barking, chasing, fur, and furniture flying, then synchronized butt-sniffing and a nap. The tray table on the left was not upright very long.

Not much planned for today, just hot-tub maintenance and relaxing. Hope everyone has a good Sunday.
