(Old) Hauntings in the MMP

Well, back from the Doc, had to wait awhile until they took my BP, then wait another while for the Doc to come by, then a little more time for them to do their vampire thing (apparently they need the blood to check my thyroid level before issuing a new prescription. So trying to decide if I have enough time to get to the gym before the Soccer banquet (which will include pizza as dinner is at a combination roller skating/laser tag/mini golf place–fancy, huh?).

yanker, I hear you about having to find ‘the old guys’ to fix things. And agree that if it isn’t in their system (with a procedure spelled out, no doubt), places are leery about fixing things. Glad you got it squared away.

All the haunted house stories here make me think that we have a very observant and stable group here (or y’all drank too much in your younger days…).

Sticky Buns, enjoy the trip and hope the new job for Music Man works out well.

Well done!

I think you got the best of that deal…

Real Fish, good to see you around these parts. Best wishes to all of the family and just remember, if you move to Erie, the weather there today has a high of 43F (but it will warm up to the 50’s next week…).Had my gall bladder out over 30 years ago, the pain of the stones was as intense as any I have ever felt and haven’t missed it much. Probably can get a ballpark figure on Dads’s house with zillow or some other app, I’m sure there is someone with a list of ‘things to do’ around here (Sari and JtC both moved/sold a house recently, maybe drop them a PM?).

Ok, 3 pm, I am going to the gym for a couple hours and then clean up there and head to the Soccer dinner. Catch y’all later tonight.

The monthly resident meeting today at Walking Dead Manor. I don’t know why I go to these, as almost nothing is ever said that is of interest or importance. One woman complained that she has an iPhone, so she is unable to talk to or message people who have a Samsung. I suspect operator ignorance may be the problem. Also, I always seem to get stuck next to someone who wants to chat, but who is also deaf as a post.

If they really want to help people they should bring in someone to talk about post-election depression.

The wife made an appointment for the cat for next week. I hate to take her to the vet already, as it will stress her out, but we really need to address her dental issues.

So that private parking ticket… I tried once again to pay online, but the address still times out. I LVM at the local number, saying I’m trying to pay and asking if I can pay over the local number, and I’ve just received a text telling me they’re waiving the ticket. That was nice.

ETA: I bought some deli meat for our trip the third week of October. Today, there were two nice slices of turkey left. So lunch was a grilled turkey, tomato, and provolone sandwich on multi-grain bread.

I’ll be solo cooking for my dad and I. I do Polish food for him for Thanksgiving, since that’s the only time he gets it. I make enough pierogi and golumpki to put in single serving freezer boxes so he can get them out for a month or two.

I’ve frozen veggie soup with barley in it with no ill effects, so you’ll likely be good.

Did you use quick cooking or old fashioned pearl barley? Quick cooking goes to much in a heartbeat.

That’s my general attitude about voting in Tennessee.

Irked, had an all hands meeting in the morning and in addition to November being a 3 paycheck month, our quarterly bonus will drop on the last one and it’s a decent one.

Some of it will be spent on an oil change (a little early, but I want it done before going up north), going to the good car wash and likely a pair of back tires (I replaced the front ones this summer when I had a flat).

I grew up in a house built in 1860, so if there were any ghosts, they probably inhabited it. I used to see shadows sometimes where shadows shouldn’t be, but it was never scary.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

I’ve actually gotten some cleaning/sorting/organizing done today! Now I’m just hanging out with Annie.

@JaneDoe42 check your messages, please!

Random weird memory - on 7 November 1974, I did my first solo flight. Half a century ago!

Just had to share that little tidbit.

I a good, long nap. Spot spent the whole time with me. Now it’s Manhattan time(and Redneck Stirfry)

I also read it as “one crouton”

“the horrors persist. but so do I”

Venting is good, and so is checking in with us.

I-D-10-T error.

That is a cool thing. Do you remember what aircraft you soloed in?

That’s pretty big, I think she’s settling in quite nicely.

Wiki has a nice link about it, but it was something kidnapped slaves brought with them. They believed that sky blue would attract the ghosts/haints and keep them out of the house. They also liked to put blue bottles on tree branches to trap the haints and keep them out of the home.

I’m not sure why continuing the tradition is racist but that’s what I learned when I was a kid and I don’t want to accidentally offend.

I do not believe that it stops the wasps from making nests because I’ve seen wasp nests on porches with haint blue ceilings.

Yeah, sounds like a stupid day to me, LOL! How’s the soup?

That’s the problem with updating something, everything else suddenly looks slightly shabby. I hope you love them.

It’s great that he’s feeling well enough to want to go out. Here’s hoping you don’t come down with the crud despite your precautions.

I’m so glad you had a good time with him, I know you miss him a lot.

I’m so happy I’m not in AZ, I would have been much more upset to have lost the vote in a swing state than I was here in WV. I knew what to expect here.

Oh, I’m pretty sure we know what it was. I thought you were too smart to say something like that out loud!

It’s good to have something for the boyfriend to show off doing, it will make him more comfortable and feel wanted.

Oh, that is wonderful, I am so happy for both of you.

I’ve never even considered using my phone to post to the dope, the keyboard covers almost everything. I hope you get out of there without dying of boredom and cold.

Paper skin? Hubs once cut his toe stepping on a shed claw.

It should not be this hard. I hope you get someone to pay attention soon.

Good to hear from you fishy and I’m glad things are going as well as possible. If you are seriously looking at moving, start going through your stuff now. Moving sucks. Moving things that should have been sold at a yard sale or donated really sucks. You can never start soon enough.

Why not both?

When the Americans took Okinawa, people and troops jumped off what came to be known as Suicide Cliff rather than be taken by the white devils. Women threw their children off the cliff and then jumped after them. Soldiers shot their last bullets at the devils before jumping. (Okinawan people were the poor country mice who believed the Japanese fearmongering and were terrified of what they thought would happen to them if captured.)

I was in Okinawa when it was given back to the Japanese, there were still survivors of that horrible day who shared their stories and I heard them from both sides. Being young and dumb, I went to the cliffs one night. I didn’t go back. I didn’t see or hear anything, but it was so full of feelings that it felt very haunted to me.

If she’s got bad teeth, having that dealt with will make her feel so much better. Cats in pain also hide so the alpha predators in the house don’t know that she is weakened. I’m glad you will be getting that taken care of.

That was very nice. Sometimes being polite and cooperative pays off.

Well then…can we be invited to your place, that sounds lovely!

Hurray for some extra money, its good that you can get your car spruced up before the winter.

Oh, was kinda zoning, sorry.

Evening all. Did do a fair amount of sweating at the gym, then went straight to the Soccer Banquet (if you call pizza and cookies a banquet) and was surprised when they gave me a “Lifetime Achievement Award”, which was a nice plaque which I’ll hang on my wall and a $100 Amazon card, which I won’t hang on my wall. It was nice of them to to so that, I’ve been involved there since 1997 (missed 1999-2003 while I was overseas) so am known to most of the folks there. So feeling pretty good right now.

cookie, sounds like some of my soccer meetings.

flyboy, if they waived the ticket that fast, I suspect you are not the only one experiencing trouble with their system.

FCM, that is a neat anniversary. And echoing doggio, what aircraft type? (hope it wasn’t a Wright Flyer…)

JtC, I know the story about Japanese people jumping into the sea rather than surrendering to the US Forces, but I thought that was on Saipan not Okinawa (hostory nerd here). But yeah, in either place old General William T. Sherman had it right; War is Hell.

And of to refresh my Pepsi Zero and finish the evening internettin’. Take care all.

I’ve been looking at Zillow for a ballpark, the problem is that the house isn’t in the best of shape which I know will cut down on the amount I’ll get.

That is a great idea! I’ll drop them mesages tomorrow, since I’m kinda brain dead tonight.

That actually sounds great to me! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yay for waved tickets!

That sounds really good. I haven’t had golumpki in far too long. I may need to actually try to make something.

Honestly, even though I knew that the bigger races weren’t going to be affected by my vote, I do everything in my power to keep Justin Jones in his seat.

I’ve been working on getting through my things, kind of thinking of it as “pre-moving”. I helped Former Partner with packing and moving and I know that mine will probably be just as bad! The toughest part will be getting Hubby through his things and the kids through theirs. When I put together my new desk, I had to move one of my bookshelves. I took the opportunity to go through the books on that shelf for what to keep and what to sell at the local UBS.

And you have every right to! You’ve given a lot of years to them it’s it’s nice to be recognized for that.

Part of the other reason wanted to make sure to come in tonight was to show off my new glasses. They’ve got all the bells and whistles and I can see out of them too. So I’m pretty happy.

G’night, all!

Great specs!

I was just typing about something that happened back then. Half a century. How did I ever get old enough to think in those terms? :sob:

I picked up a Foodland flyer today, turkey’s are 89 cents a pound. We haven’t bought a turkey in years and have never bought one in WV so have no idea when to buy.

Somehow we forgot to get lemons and I didn’t have one to slice for my icewaterwithlemon this morning. Just the idea of driving to the gym without my big stainless steel sippy cup was so unsettling that I forgot to put a bra in my gym bag. After my swim I had the choice to go home and put some bottled lemon juice in my water or go to the sto braless. Not wanting to do either of those things, I grabbed the jacket I had in the back seat and zipped it up while scurrying in to buy some real lemons because I am far to special to use reconstituted juice in my water.

From what I was told…not a history nerd at all…Saipan was part of the Okinawan archipelago, so most of them were not Japanese, but blamed the Japanese for the terrifying propaganda. I visited that cliff and one in the big Okinawan island-forgot the proper name for it-and know that there were two others that I didn’t visit.

Okinawans were the poor country folks and the Japanese were high society, there was much resentment over the lies that had been spread by people who got them into a war they didn’t understand or want.

Okinawa half a century ago is not the Japan of today. There was a lot of mistrust and most of my fellow military members didn’t bother trying to learn to speak the language. I did and I practiced with anyone I could get to stand still. I wanted to learn and experience and people were receptive. They would talk to me and help me learn to wrap my tongue around the words. They would share happy laughter with me and tell me about their grandfather dying in China next.

My super power is listening.

Tomorrow’s project. My “loving” family decided I needed to be awakened well before 4am. Did get back to bed within about an hour, but had a horrible time dragging out this morning, so Taco Bell handled dinner tonight.

I received the OK from my wife’s pastor to donate 10 Hohner Blues Band harmonicas to the toy drive. (They’ll be here tomorrow.) So now I’ve pulled out my copy of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Playing the Harmonica. After owning harmonicas most of my life, I really need to start practicing.

N10568, a blue and white Cessna 150. Did my obligatory 3 takeoffs and landings at Brown’s Field in San Diego. Alas, my shirt tail is gone - the flying club no longer exists.

Wonder where my log book got to?

1970 Cessna 172K, N84573. My dad bought it from Gibb’s Flying Service at MYF in 1976 (I think). First solo, 07/17/83. (I transcribed my log book into Excel.)

Anybody else got a new “feature” in Discourse? If I leave a page open it’ll go to the last entry, instead of leaving it where I left it.

Like I want to leave the MMP open, but want to see where I left off, not where you beloved chatterboxes got off to while I was away.

As well you ought! Shoot, I’m proud just to consider you my friend~you are awesome and have quietly and humbly been a trustworthy, caring, reliable adult to literally thousands of kids. You may not realize it but I’m sure you have literally saved some lives by giving kids hope, just by being there and being a grownup who was safe to trust. I choke up a bit just thinking about what you’ve done.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave.

Still trucking!

It’s bad when even Life lets you down.

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 4c/39f with a predicted high of 9c/49f and mostly cloudy. Weather app says “Except for the clouds and the fucking assholes, it’s a decent fucking day. I really wish the fucking assholes would leave.” Me, too!

Good to see you back again - I saw your posts on the Book of Faces about the surgery etc and I’m glad you’re recovering well. As for the house stuff, can you get a valuation on it or have a look at similar properties in the area? There are also often charities or somesuch who will come and take whatever furniture they can use/sell - I gave a lot of mum’s furniture to the British Heart Foundation, they came to look at it and told me everything they were able to take. Some of the other stuff went to a local charity that supplies household items (anything from stoves to crockery) to victims of domestic abuse who are starting from scratch in their own home.

Mum used to act as secretary to the Residents Committee where she lived, it was pretty much the same thing - lots of complaints about why they couldn’t have bird/squirrel feeders (rats, of course) and why there weren’t more activities organised for the residents (usually because they didn’t know what they wanted and nobody could be bothered to organise it).

Excellent! And bonus turkey sandwich as well, that’s a win in anyone’s book.

The house is a wreck, what it really needs is either arson or demolition and a complete rebuild. There isn’t a single room that doesn’t need extensive work, it’s been neglected over the years because we haven’t been living in it. Anyway, got to start somewhere, so ridiculously expensive curtains are the obvious first step!

Oooh…fancy! It’s good to be recognised, that’s for sure. I’m glad they appreciate you.

Yesterday evening was pretty much as predicted, I logged out of work and finished doing campus food for the rest of the week, then had half an hour of sofa time before we went grocery shopping. I got everything on my list and spent enough to qualify for Week 1 of the supermarket’s christmas collector bonus (spend X amount for four out of five weeks in the promotional period, and get supermarket points worth £25). Got home and unpacked everything, then retired to the sofa while 'im indoors made dinner.

Today I have a departmental meeting this morning, so that means writing up minutes this afternoon. Hopefully I’ll be out with my friends tonight, I should get an email later this morning letting me know if they’re both able to come out (both have slightly unpredictable health issues). Fingers crossed!
