I have my dad’s and his brother Charles’ books. I gave Uncle Roy’s to his daughter.
I got the roku connected and some things hung on walls. I really can’t do much more than that until the desk gets here and I set up the studio.

Heh…I’m not old enough to have experienced either ration books or Green Stamps, but I do recall my mom once saying that pasting up those books of Green Stamps felt like keeping a ration book, in reverse.
It’s a cool and rainy day here, which is such a treat for August. I went into work this morning but left to finish the day from home - I’ve got an eye infection and the fluorescent lights were incredibly irritating. My office lights are motion-detected with no way to get them to stay off for longer than about 10 minutes. I started eye drops on Sunday but they aren’t working as quickly and I’d hoped. Very frustrating. The cats are please I’m home though.
FCM I’m sure Roxy will be over the moon when she gets her new bike!
Coppertone glad to see you back! Hope things are going well for you
Chefguy what was the application for - to be able to go onto the base or facility he was working on? Or was travel into Alaska restricted?
sticky hopefully you can sustain your excitement/love of the subject (and thank you pilot for your explanation - I also didn’t put it all together until the bit you chimed in). It makes such a difference watching a video where you can tell the instructor actually cares what they’re teaching about.
Got a call from SIL - Daughter will be taking him to the ER (don’t know why - the connection was bad) so I’ll be getting the kids and Trevor and bringing them here for however long it takes.
My car is acting up again - third time in a month, so it’s going to Paul in the morning to get fixed unless the fix costs more than the car is worth. TBD.
The neurologist spent all of 45 seconds with me. She didn’t even bother to read my file (so, you had this seizure 3 months ago? Um, no, a year ago in May…) I wonder if I can find another one. Neurologists are few and far between around here.
Anyway, gotta figure out what to feed the grandspawn - maybe mac-n-cheese? So much for an evening of chillage.
My mother and my siblings were all ordered to evacuate Alaska after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. They ended up living with my grandmother in Portland. Travel to Alaska was restricted and one had to apply for a permit to enter the territory. My father worked on government contracts. At the time she applied (1943), he was working on the highway connecting Haines, AK to the Alaska Highway. Right after that he worked on the Canol Road project in the Yukon. Restrictions appear to have been lifted within a couple of years after that, and my mother almost immediately became pregnant with what turned out to be me.
SIL had chest pains and tingling. All tests showed normal, but it turns out he’d neglected to have some test done a month ago because, I dunno, he forgot? Anyway, I fed the grands and they’re now on the way back home with their parentals. And quiet reigns here again.
Roxy snarfed down more pasta than I could have managed, plus some strawberries. Tobias ate a fair bit of pasta and a big bowl of grapes and a bunch of strawberries - that boy lurves fruit! The dishwasher has finished washing and FCD is having a sammich. I’m thinking I need my apple-and-peanut-butter snack. And sleep. I’s tahred…
Howdy Y’all! Laundry got laundered and put where it stays until it gets dirty again. OYKW had a gnawin’ and a cravin’ for Asia hog trough Buffet, so we went there for lunch. We will have leftover sketties tomorrow. It was good but I et too much and needed large nappage. I am still really full. We day drank and engaged in the usual RDOS inactivities. We opened da cave windows for a while this mornin’ cause of the mid sixties temps. ‘Twas nice but we had to close the place back up when we got back from lunch.
Kaboom you have inspired me to make some aig and olive sallit tomorrow. It’s aig sallit but with the addition of green and black olives. Sometimes I go rogue and add in some finely chopped sweet onion.
VanGo Peach learned about cat today. Chances are she will forget that lesson by tomorrow.
red slow and steady progress is the way to go. Glad the roku is set up. We really like ours. Hope the desk is everything you want it to be.
Frumious I remember green stamps and gold bond stamps. Whenever one or more of us kids got on her nerves, mom would give the offendin’ kid or kids the task of lickin’ and pastin’ stamps. Yes we had to lick. That was a way to maintain quiet.
Fifty-two hope the eye infection clears up soonest.
MOOOOOOM glad SIL is OK. Heart stuff is always scary.
Hey everyone! Once again, it was a day of mostly sloth.
The weather has cooled down so much the windows have been open since yesterday which is lovely. Hubs spent his afternoon in the shed tinkering with his mower. We’ve been here for over a year now, he has been told he needed to give it a yearly tune up and blade sharpening. Harry has the blade sharpening tools that can be used under supervision, both of which was helpful.
Mrs. Harry won’t let Harry mow to the bottom of the gully anymore and I am loving the mini-meadow that’s growing now. I had no idea that WV flowers so much, even now plants are blooming and butterflies are feeding.
Mrs. H has a well padded but very strong backbone, not only has she curtailed a lot of Harry’s forest fighting, she also won’t let his raven out of his study (hobby room). Harry put a raven door in the wall so his buddy can come and go as he wants, but so far raven hasn’t learned to not poop on Mrs. H’s clean floors.
I did some stitching, metal mouse all of my bad habits are because I’m lazy and arrogant but still secretly doubt myself. I know where the middle of the canvas is and I do put a few guide threads in to help, but I don’t count like I should. I just go by what I’ve done before and if I’ve made a mistake, the only way I will know is when I do the corners.
I also couldn’t go a week without adding to my stash. Two of my favorite needlepoint designers are having kit sales because they are getting out of the kit business. Thread is getting too expensive and we no longer have access to the variety we had a few years ago, so they are going to focus on designing, teaching and charts.
I needed a few small projects I could carry in my purse and FOMO (fear of missing out) drove me to buy a few thirty dollar kits before they became $60 kits tomorrow.
It’s apple butter season in WV and the produce sto already has some for sale. She had some lovely yellow tomatoes but said the green ones were flying off the shelf. Hubs has encouraged me to learn how to make fried green tomatoes, but I’ve never had them so don’t know what the end result should taste like.
I do know that I am not a fan of fried pickles and hubs thinks they are wonderful. Hubs likes peanut butter on dill pickles. I have my doubts about liking fried green tomatoes but will try them at the apple butter festival next month. If I know what result I want, I’ll probably be able to fake it.
Being able to lick and paste the stamps was a reward in Mom’s home. I figured out that I could get the “helpful big sister” reward by showing my baby sister how to do it to keep her busy while the others were carrying the groceries in.
Its so good that you are indulging this, good eating habits start young!
Oh gosh, isn’t it nice? The big down side IMHO is that the big storm and lower temps have told the hummingbirds to migrate. Last week they were draining the feeders daily, now the nightly tank-up only features a dozen or so.
I do hope your eye infection gets better soon. Do you have polarizing sunglasses that might help at work?
You have your dog and your bed. Now you have things on the walls. It’s starting to be home
That sounds like a wonderful plan, especially now that the weather is being nice again. I hope you enjoyed and were productive.
Its gotten so much worse since we last posted about this. I was going to say that only Theil knows what’s going to happen, but I think he’s lost control as well.I’ve done the prep work for the rolled chicken tacos and my wimple is starched. I’ve got a lawyer appointment in the morning, dealing with my final arrangements is becoming much more important now, and will be at the capital in the afternoon.I won’t wear my Handmaid uniform to the lawyer’s office. Maybe, they do practice death by AC there and he knows that I expect to be violently arrested despite having the capital guards on my side.
I’m thanking shoe’s sage advice for the tree’s success. Had she not told me to not fuck with it on a daily basis, I’d probably still have a stick with ten leaves. I really do hope that someday (in three or four years) I’ll get blossoms too.
Cats seem to know how to teach dogs to get along or get away. I sure do hope Brian will be joining your inside family before winter, cats and dogs can and do get along well when probperly introduced and supervised.
I’m pretty sure that she has already forgotten, so stop being your own worse critic! You are going to be great and you will inspire the unseen for years to come.
I got that.
And the lemon flower is sweet.
I hope they get him fixed up toot sweet.
It’s home now and will be a good fit with the rest of the studio furnishings.
My mom had the same strategy with Top Value stamps.
This afternoon, when I took Nelson to the courtyard to take care of business, we met a cool Yorkie. The little guy was from upstairs and turned loose, sans human to potty. Sis said that’s fairly common here (shakes head in disapproval). The little guy was friendly and he played well with (leashed) Nelson.
Tomorrow, I begin the most fun part of the move: unpacking the toys studio. I’m anxious to get back to being more creative than the travel stuff I brought. Nh
Embarrassed that I didn’t. But, in my defense, Mom listened to them. I listened to Black Sabbath.
And now I learned that the only full sized taxidermist blue whale is in Sweden. It used to be open to the public until they caught people having sex in it.
Now I’m sad. I should have gotten there first, I know how to floozy without getting caught!
Good evening all. Did some shopping, finally found my Little Debbie mini-Apple Pies thanks to a suggestion by a guy stocking the section at Kroger. He didn’t have any but said the Wal-Mart Grocery up the road from me always had them…so went to check and sure enough, got three boxes worth so should be set for September. Then to the gym for some sweating and home to the usual Tuesday Mac-n-Cheese. Had two pudding cups, pretzels, and some carrots post-dinner but still under my limit thanks to the calorie burn so might have a bedtime snack. Temperature is down to 68F and its’ due to make it to the 50’s tonight, so the AC is in the off position again.
red, sounds like the place is starting to resemble a home. Enjoy!
Kaboom, I’m pretty much a white and rye bread eater, have thought about trying that multi-grain stuff but just can’t seem to be bothered to pick it up. And thanks for the beef discussion, it just motivated me to take tomorrow’s cheeseburger out of the freezer so it can slowly defrost in the fridge.
flyboy, glad you had a good motoring to work day.
lily, hope the writing continues to go well.
Cookie, thanks for the interesting piece of history you found. I still have my Dad’s DD214 from the Army when he processed out, will have to go look for that again.
Ah, Green Stamps…I remember having to paste those &*^&% S&H stamps in the books when I was a youth. Can’t remember what we would buy with them…
52, sorry to hear about the eye problems, hope the eye drops finally come through.
FCM, glad SIL is doing better, but IIRC this is a recurring thing with him, is there any long-term solution they can provide for him? And glad you mentioned the car problems, I made an oil change appointment for Thursday, been too long and down to 5% time before change is required.
JtC, thanks for the harry and the crow stories, someone should make a short movie about that. And keep up the needlepoint, I for one have no doubt about your skills. And am with you regarding fried pickles and peanut butter…ewwww… And your blue whale story is…interesting. Here’s a museum you need to add to your bucket list (albeit it wouldn’t surprise me if you’ve been there… https://www.phallus.is/
Well done, both of you.
And that’s all for now,. have about an hour of You Tubes lined up and then need to check e-mails and stuff, so I;ll either see you in a couple of hours or tomorrow morning. Either way, take care now.
ETA:
Memorable music, but “I am Iron Man” always reminds me, for some reason, of this 1994 animated cartoon opening song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y63i2NR9-LE
Oh, goodness, don’t be! My parents listened to PP&M, too, but it stuck with me. I was a folk music lovah, still am.
Loved Black Sabbath, too – my brother and I looked at each other in stunned, mutual, shivery understanding the first time we heard, “I… AM… IRON… MAN!!” Nothing at all needed to be said!
You could have given lessons. I wish you’d got there first, too.
I knew I liked you!
Backatcha!!
Up from naptime. Having a Manhattan, with Redneck Stirfry(this time I roasted tomatoes, onions, green pepper, and a Hatch Chili on the burner to add to black beans and corn).
Twitch violently every 5 minutes? But hope the drops kick in soon.
Do the FairyChat women have a type, or what? But glad he’s OK.
That’s cooll!
Very pretty
And I listened to PP&M and Black Sabbath. \m/–\m/
Three hours to get home.
I knew one of our Sales Executives lived far away. She lives in Camas… almost Oregon. So at 160 miles to the office, she has me beat by 40 miles. (She also only comes in once a month, though I assume she has to travel to visit clients/members.)
Now, I do like me some olives — green preferred but black will do — but I’m not sure I can imagine them tossed into an aig sallit. Surely the olives would overpower the otherwise relatively mild flavours of the aig and mayo (and in my case, some fresh ground pepper, a pinch of salt, and some finely diced celery)? Maybe I might have to try a bit myself. I’ve never thought of that combo before.
Oh, Thiel’s still well in the mix. Palantir is gonna get a nice fat no-bid government contract to develop what is being called “Government OS” and it will be AI-driven and in control of most critical government infrastructure. It’s every bit as scary as it sounds, and then some.
I’m normally an Italian or plain white bread guy, with some whole wheat thrown in, but I thought I’d try some of this “smooth” multigrain. Turns out it mostly just tastes like whole wheat.
