My mother got me a bow-and-arrow set when I was nine or ten. No idea what became of the arrows – probably lost in the wheat field or the orchard next door (our house was between them), but for some reason I still had the bow when I was in high school, after we’d moved three times.
PP&M, the Chad Mitchell Trio, the Smothers Brothers, the Tannahill Weavers, the Corries, and even real, traditional (words and music by Anonymous) folk music.
Gesundheit!
My last job was fifteen minutes each way – quite enough of a commute for me! (Though IIRC, when I lived in Yorktown the drive was about double that.)
Black for me. Green are okay, but I can’t stand the pimentos that so many are stuffed with. The garlic-stuffed ones are excellent, though.
I used to do that when I was in my early twenties.
Each quote ends with a “quote=” tag and ends with a “/quote” tag. If you have more than one quote, there will be a blank line between the “/quote” of the first one and the “quote” of the next one. You type your response to the first one in that blank line, (That’s basically what you did in your last post – you typed your comment in the blank line after the last “/quote”, without another quote following it.)
Black are much milder, so they do fit well into more dishes, but I like the strong olive flavour green gives on pizza and in some sandwiches — when used in moderation, anyway. Or I just like snacking on ‘em. Also, I find black olives have a softer, squishier texture, which often doesn’t sit well with me, even though I do like the flavour.
New Yorker bagels and scrambled eggs for breakfast. I seem to be sneezing and blowing all day so far. Allergies, I hope. Made it through exercise without collapsing.
Now that the road is paved, they’ve come back to dig it up again. Pretty sure it’s to expose the manhole accesses. We’re far from done, methinks.
Another nice, cool day without air conditioning running.
The state fair is going on, which I have no interest in attending. But I saw today that a bucket of fries goes for $25, which is probably what a 50 pound bag of potatoes costs. The average intake for a food concession at the fair is $70K for the twelve days.
Many years ago, FCD went car shopping without me and came up with a deal on a new Jetta. I didn’t realize at the time it was a lease (dammit!!!) Anyway, that evening, he brought me to the dealer with toddler in tow, and all of a sudden, the price had gone up. I had done the math, I managed our budget, and I knew what we could afford. So when the salesdude mentioned a number that was not what we’d originally been told, I stood up to leave. I’m sure he expected us to take it anyway since it was late in the day and all that. So he “talked to his manager” and suddenly it was back where it was supposed to be. Asshole.
I hate when FCD would go car shopping without me. He doesn’t pay much attention to the $$ - he just wants what he wants. Makes me crazy!! That’s what happens when you marry a car guy.
Speaking of cars, mine is in Paul’s hands. I talked with him this morning and we discussed what it could be and the ever-popular do-I-repair-or-do-I-get-rid-of-it options. The shop is busy so he said he might not get to it till tomorrow. No biggie - if I need to go somewhere, I have the truck.
Our county fair is the 3rd weekend in Sept. I won’t be going unless Daughter wants me to help wrangling her spawn. You seen one barn full of sheep, you’ve seen ‘em all. It’s fun with the kids, but we’ve been to plenty of fairs in the last 40 years, so no thanks.
The chore on the boat was successful. I even saved us a bunch of work that FCD thought was necessary - go me! And what’s more fun than lying on the deck with your head in the bilge!! But we’ve pulled the water line that will go from the incoming strainer to the pressure tank, then the hot and cold lines that will come from the tank and the water heater back to the aft head. That all had to be done before the fuel tanks go in - otherwise it’d be ridiculously difficult to run the lines under the tanks and thru the aft bulkhead. But we’re to a stage now where the techs can install the tanks (maybe next week???) The rest of the plumbing can be done whenever (after the tanks are installed.)
We’ve lunched, and shortly I’ll make some sketty sauce for the freezer. Then, I dunno. Salmon for supper - at least that’s decided. (It was for yesterday, but with the kids coming over, my plans changed.) Oh, and Roxy’s bike was delivered last night - it’s purdy!!
I’ve gained five points in the past month or two. Since I’m not going down to Burien every week, I got out of the habit of weighing myself every week. I thought I’d skip the sausage or bacon and egg this morning. An avocado/havarti/endive/tomato sandwich sounded a bit calorie-heavy. But I had to eat something. So I ended up having a high-calorie meal anyway: Medium cheddar-and-jalapeño quesadilla on a large low-carb whole-wheat tortilla.
I forgot that I had a 10:00 meeting this morning. I’d planned to go for a walk at 11:30, but the meeting went for an hour and a half. Afterward, I really needed to hit the head. Since I have a 1:00 meeting, I’ll just see if I feel like walking when I clock out at three.
Twas delishush. Totally worth yanking on semi-clean pants, a respectable (and clean) shirt … and even a bra, y’all, that’s not nuthin’ yanno? (Can’t go givin’ them Olde Folks the vapors.)
Also - and this probably sounds trivial but it’s kinda not - I cleaned my plates y’all I ate ALL the food.
In my defense, she forgot my toast and jam (and I wasn’t charged for it, so no harm/no foul) though if that had been included it would’ve been too much food. As it was, two eggs, two bacon, and a single butter’n’syrup slathered pancake (plus hot tea) was ezzactly perfect.
Oh, but the tea was DECAFF. I’ve never consumed such an abomination in my life, but since 1a.) I don’t like making a fuss, and 2b.) I was planning on a post-breakfast nap anyway, I went ahead with it.
It was … okay. The world did not end. I still got to enjoy my little “diner hot tea” ritual. They have the tiniest mugs there, which is nice because you can keep re-pouring more hot water for little sips, instead of this big giant mug that’s heavy.
Came home to the inevitable post-meal nap.
Car(e)less Co-worker called a bit ago, in a state of mild panic - he’d overslept & needed a ride in. I did him the favor (he’s been there for me when I’m in a jam and/or need someone to cover my shift) but dude really needs to learn how alarm clocks/apps work.
Got me a frozen mocha coffee on the way back home as my reward to myself, and also, hopefully, sugary motivation to do All The Things.
We’ll see how much actually gets accomplished.
On an unrelated note, we are balls deep into fly season out here, and I am OVER IT.
I posted a striped morning glory over in the “gardening” thread (from my front steps) but since I didn’t grow these, it would be dishonest to post these there.
But they’re so damn pretty! I wanted to share (they’re from a small biz across the street from us) in case someone needs some colorful cheer in their doomscrolling.
(In TX these are cold weather flowers, so it’s weird to see them in August. Man, I lurve me some Mitten State.)
Thank you for that info (everything in your post, but I didn’t want to repeat it all), I had never heard about that before. New rabbit hole to dive into this weekend!
Thanks, they’re slowly getting better. I tried sunglasses but it made using the computer monitors too difficult. We had a long meeting in the conference room this morning and there were so many overhead lights - I left for home immediately after and my eye was just burning. Luckily it passed quickly once I got home and into dimmer conditions. I WFH the rest of the week and then the office is closed Monday - if I’m still having trouble on Tuesday then I definitely need to see an eye doctor.
That sounds like it went just about as well as it could have! One of my favorite camping memories is when my (now ex) husband, dog and I were in a tent during an early morning thunderstorm. We had to hold up one side of the roof to keep it off our heads because the wind was so strong. It was rather amazing to be in this tiny tent while thunder raged all around. In hindsight, we had way too much confidence in the tent stakes
Supper was salmon and cauliflower parmesan and an assortment of fruits. Very yum! Plus I still have 200 calories left for the day, which means apple-n-peanut-butter snack! YUM! Today was a milestone day, too - I’m now below the 2-century mark in, well, more days than I care to admit. (Christmas time I think.) I’m pleased that after overindulging in sweets at sea, I’ve regained my self-discipline to the extent that I no longer think about grabbing a snack when I’m shopping. It’s not easy, but it’s easier. I think my Doc will be pleased when I return in December.
I need to go back to WalMart tomorrow. They gave me one wrong-sized jeans and I didn’t bother checking when I picked them up. So I’ll return them and go thru the store myself and see if I can get FCD another pair. I also need cat food and boxed mac-n-cheese. Then I’ll return home via CVS to get my sweetie’s meds. Because I’m nice, dammit! Unfortunately, I have to take the truck. Fortunately, I have a truck to take.
My sister related to me that she was mystified when our mother told her they had to leave because of Pearl Harbor. She just couldn’t figure out how a harbor could be made of pearls (she was only four at the time). I would post a photo of the application, but there is information on there that would identify who I am, etc.
My dad listened to PP&M, the Weavers, Kingston Trio, etc and Mom to a lot of bluegrass and mountain music (basically, what she and her family played). I listened to all of that, plus pop and metal. Performance wise, I do mostly bluegrass, folk and Celtic.
Sounds like you had a yummy breakfast/dinner, shoe.
I got the the shelves up in the studio and set up the die cutting station, both electronic and manual.
The fridge issue didn’t get resolved, so they’re bringing another one tomorrow (insulin and anything that could make me sick without cold refrigeration is in an insulated bag with a blue pack).
The dryer came today, the vent kit will be here tomorrow and the washer on Friday. BIL works W-S, so he’ll be over with the dolly and shelf on one of his days off. I’ll need to give him measurements for the build. He’s set portable units up and used them, so he’ll do the set up and show me what to do. Next week will be all about laundry.
Howdy Y’all! A very lazy RDOS day today. Plus I have felt sinusy all day. I think the ragweed may be crankin’ up. Benadryl and nappage helped. I shall sleep with Ben tonight. That’s all the news that fits from swampland.
Dinner was sliced avocado, havarti, purple endive, & tomato sandwiches on Sara Lee Delightful Multi-Grain bread, with mayonnaise. Mrs. L.A. had hers without the endive.
Waves at everyone, I’ve read all but doubt I’ll have time to get to everyone.
It was lovely and cool today, nothing like this time last year when it was so hot. Its expected to warm up slightly, but summer is over here. I’m really looking forward to winter, last winter was delightful and this year our windows seal and we have proper insulation so we won’t be running up our electric bill nearly as much.
I spent more money on needlepoint kits. Not enough though, I’m having serious FOMO now that the major floss makers will no longer ship to the US. Tomorrow I will be talking to my dentist about getting a new upper plate. If it isn’t too expensive, I’ll buy more kits. If it is super expensive, I will probably buy some more kits anyhow to make up for the shock.
I flipped a house today and made a thousand dollars on the deal. I think I’ll be happier investing that money on needlepoint supplies than buying stocks.
I used to carry a few in my lunch box to eat before talking f2f with a rude client.
The overhead lights at the cube farm were a constant source of grumbling. Some folks claimed they couldn’t see so the rest of us were working in an operating theater. It was never fun.
They are indeed and now I’m inspired to plant some here in not the desert.
I was so happy to read that you ate all of your breakfast, good on you! (I’m fairly sure the wait person just grabbed a tea bag out of the wrong box, it would have been an easy fix had you asked.)
For some folks, fairs are the only time they can eat fried food onna stick. Over a decade ago, I paid five bucks for deep fried spaghetti and meat balls onna stick.
I didn’t know they sang, I thought they were just a comedy act.
Of course, back then our family TV didn’t work more than a few hours a day. It worked when Days of Our Lives was on, it worked when Graham Kerr was on and then didn’t work again until Dad came home and fixed it so he could watch the news.
I was in my twenties before I figured out why the TV plugged into a socket inside the wall cabinets Dad made. Ain’t a one of us kids ever thought to open the cabinet door and be sure it was plugged in, we just believed Mom when she said it was old and broke a lot.
Thanks for the good words. As there are dopers who are trumpies and the Mump tries to stay non-political, I like to blur my political stuff. Click on the + on the right side of your tool bar and scroll down so you can as well.I think that today was my last Wednesday. One of the guards suggested that larger groups (there are only a handful of us during the weekdays) are safer protesters. Meaning the pedo prez’s coward squads will take on a single person, but will run away from more than ten.
Back when I worked in Phx, people would marvel that I was willing to drive almost 60 miles each morning. Then they would remember that my drive took less time than their 15 mile commute and start sounding jealous.
Lovely.
Harry’s raven doesn’t fly much anymore. He rides on Harry or on the perch Harry rigged for his mower.
Isn’t it wonderful! Did you get all of the colors back? That’s the best part for me.
Evening all. Soccer has been coached, exercise was exercised and the garbage bin is at the curb. The political sign I had in my yard was picked up this evening, so I am happy they cared enough to clean up after themselves (it was for a local city council race and I allowed it as a favor to a friend who is a councilwoman). Have no idea if the guy won or lost (just googled it, he won 706 to 609 votes).
Now too see what other folks have been doing…
Sensei, interesting tent design.
Flyboy, guess I could handle the drive once a month. Been maintaining my weight between 202 and 205 lbs since the end of my vacation and i am comfortable there.
JtC, stay free and if not, I’ll contribute to the bail fund.
Herald, the bow-and-arrow story may help explain why you’re in the SCA…
Cookie, hope the allergies or whatever have abated, and the only bucket of fries I would buy would be from 5 Guys.
FCM, I doubt that I have made many good car deals, but I deal in cash whenever I can so they can’t spend years collecting the interest off of me. Hope Paul can diagnose something relatively simple and painless (to your wallet). And good on ya for watching your calories. Shipboard life does wear on those of us counting the calories…
Haven’t been to a State Fair since I lived in Indianapolis in the 1980’s and keep telling myself I’ll go to the County Fair every year and never do. Maybe this year…
shoe, glad giving into temptation was so delicious. And I don’t drink tea except for the Southern staple ‘sweet tea’, which is a whole nother’ thing. And a copious compendium of colors in that photo!
52, hope the eyes keep doing better.
red, sounds like the appliances will be good to go shortly.
JtC, interesting story on the great TV fix.
Pardon me, what???
And that’s all from your N. Ali-bama reporter. Need to browse parts of the internet before bedtime and then hope I can remember my 11:30am oil change appointment. Have a good evening all.
I think I mentioned looking at buying a small home within electric wheelchair distance of the widower cousin that wandered and got lost. Well, it got bought - compny homes here tend to cost less than what FCM originally paid for their boat - and caretaker second-cousin-something-removed and her husband and little dog moved in.
Once they were settled, they managed to come up with the money to buy it outright instead of Rent-to-Own.
Not nearly as stressful as learning that if I don’t buy my kits now, like this month, I won’t be able to afford them next month. The price from one designer went up four dollars between yesterday and today (thanks USPS), who knows what all of that silk and wool will cost next month.
Apparently they were short on loaders, so I was loading 300 Middle Blue today. And since it was only 850 pieces, light Irregs, and they let me start on time wasn’t too bad. I finished early enough to help pull 100 Middle Green(950 pieces, 50% comes between 0330 and 0700. 50% comes between 0700 and 0800). I stopped at Teeter on the way home, because it’s hard to make spaghetti sauce without tomato sauce and paste.
As long as they don’t come in like a wrecking ball.
So being a cat.
Cool
Hannaford groceries used to do the electronic version back at the start of the 21st Century.
< forgets to hit send >
Up,from naptime. Diner tonight is a martini, salad, and toretellini with meatballs and fresh sauce.
I have dead millipedes.
Indeed.
Same here. Although I do go to the Greek Festival at the Fairgrounds.
Like that bit in Radio Days, when Sally (Mia Farrow) finally gets a chance to be on the radio. But just before she would have said her first line, the program is pre-empted because the Japanese are attacking. “Who is Pearl Harbor, anyway?”
I think lying to kids should be worth a few years in purgatory.
In other news, Izzy will be going to the first football game, or match as she calls it, of the year, with some friends! Two girls, who we will meet, of course.
Mr. Rilch brought home the pepperoni I will need for the rolls. Tomorrow, Izzy and I will make a test batch, some of which she’ll probably put in her school lunch. (She’s started brown-bagging it, as do many of her classmates. The cafeteria lunch is free, and students get what they pay for.) I’m itching to get started, because it’s a Whole Thing. Slice the pepperoni, nuke it to bring up the oil, which goes into the dough. Let the dough rise. Assemble the rolls. Let the rolls rise. Bake the rolls (don’t forget the sesame seeds!). And let them cool a bit. Fortunately, we have all day Saturday to make the ones for the gathering on Sunday.
Also, I showed her another Gilligan episode, the one where they think the island is sinking, and she seemed to enjoy that. My friend asked if I was going to introduce her to the Brady Bunch as well, and after some thought, I said no, unless she asks for some reason. Gilligan is a classic sitcom setup: a range of personalities in a finite setting. And apart from some elements that are really pop-culture/history, like the Mosquitoes, and the ep with the Soviet cosmonauts, it’s not that dated, because the island was outside of society.
Whereas with the Bradys, it’s not just the costumes and the hairstyles; it’s thematically dated. Here we have these fairly well-off white kids, with no ongoing issues other than the blended-family thing, which was pretty much dropped after the first season anyway. And they keep getting bent out of shape over such minor, easily manageable things. Peter has to be Benedict Arnold in the school play! Marcia hates wearing braces! Greg was smoking a cigarette! I grew up with the show, as did my cousin J and friend T, so it has sentimental value for us, but I don’t think anyone from Izzy’s generation could relate much.
So sorry to hear that. Is there any way to pay in installments?
DMC floss was 79 cents a skein last year. Today it is 3.69 if you can find your colors. Mostly I use silks and wool which are much more costly. And as of yesterday, most makers are no longer shipping to the US. So, even if I could afford to continue buying, the supplies will not be available.
I think that lying to us to us so we would go outside and play wasn’t such a bad thing, but that was back in the early 60’s. I’m sure that things have changed muchly since then.
