15 degrees. Wind chill below 0.
The woman who lives closest to me not going to church today so I am home.
Football!
I can picture that. Nelson’s first night at Sis’, he made a break for it when her stepson didn’t latch the gate well. Sis headed out to the carport immediately to go look for him and found him being bullied by four feral kittens living out there. She said that he didn’t even wait for her to open the burglar bars, but wiggled his fat little butt through them to get inside.
Woke up after a rough night feeling a little icky. Trying to nap to see if that helps.
The snow ended when promised and now there’s blue sky and sun. The paved areas are just wet and it’s cold, but at least not dreary.
I’ve finished the day’s Cetol application. I left a fire burning to keep it dry and warm to promote drying. Tomorrow, the first shiny top coat will go on.
We’ll be doing Salsa’s for lunch today. They open at 12 and we’ll be there first-ish. We’ve also got to stop at CVS to get my anti-seizure meds - luckily, it’s on the way home.
I’ve gathered the white elephants for the family gift game, assuming we do it this year. I suggested the sister who’s doing it canvas everyone to see if there’s still interest. So we’ll see. I won’t waste wrapping paper till I know for sure.
There’s a pet store in Leonardtown that has DIY dog wash rooms. For $15, they supply shampoo, conditioner, towels, and dryers. How can you go wrong?? Especially since getting Otis the full deal at his groomer runs $80 (including tip.) We’ll still take him there for nails and ears, but in-between, we’ll go to Leonardtown. Good to know!
Ok then, I thing my recliner misses me.
Mrs. L.A. said that she’s expecting a couple of packages while she’s away, and I am not to open them. One came yesterday. I did not open it. But it’s in the manufacturer’s box, so I know what it is.
Shoe, it sounds like that teenager is a real 'shole, and he has a bright future in management or podcasting.
Last night, we started listening to a series of podcasts called Burn Order, by Rachel Maddow. It’s about what happened behind the scenes leading up to the arrest and imprisonment of all Japanese-Americans in the U.S.A. during World War II. The title comes from the order to destroy all files about the “internment”, after the war. Today, it is said that nothing ever really disappears from the internet. Fortunately, a few traces remained of the “internment” after the order to destroy all copies.
I’ve taken the trash and recycling out for its bi-weekly pickup. Litter boxes have been cleaned.
The bathtub has a chip in it from … I don’t know. 20 years ago? I think a workman dropped a hammer on it or something. The Spousal Unit painted over it with porcelain paint or white nail polish or something when she moved in. Her repair has deteriorated over the years. (Strangely, the ‘run’ at the bottom, which wasn’t actually on the chip, has held up very well. This morning I used a wire brush to take off the old paint, and am putting on new Porc-A-Fix. I think she painted on one coat and called it good. I’ve put one coat on so far, and I’ll probably do two more. And yes, my very first attempt to apply it dripped. And yes, I did wipe it off and started again.
I’ll apply another coat of Porc-A-Fix to the tub, and then start searing beef for a small pot of chile colorado. After I finish this cuppa joe.
We are 1130.56 ft above sea level here in fly over country, and a two day drive to the sea in all directions. If the ocean floods us we need to watch for Kevin Costner’s sailboat being chased by the Deeze
I got the Pollo Fiesta at Salsa’s, and there’s enough for tomorrow’s lunch. YUM! But, dang, it’s COLD out there!!
Temp hovering around freezing with wind driving the cold to the bone. I’m home by the pellet stove in a heavy sweater and I’m not quite thawed yet.
FCD has gone out to put away whatever he was messing with this morning - he decided to take the afternoon off, so YAY! We’ll do our best to hold our recliners down. Maybe he’ll watch some football. I’m going to work on my afghan. That will be the extent of activity for the rest of the day, probably. Max chillage.
Thanks for the good thoughts. We’re fine. My lovely wife pulls stats on things like flooding history before we buy a house.& There have been some street closures and undermined roads near us. We flew out of Seattle and could see devastated communities, especially north of there.
*We also have only bought places that have an alternative way to heat, keep candles and flashlights around the house, have canned food that could be eaten cold, etc.).
I’m attending a friend’s memorial, which I want to do, but which takes me away from home at a very inconvenient time. So it goes.
Lake effect snow is streaming off Lake Huron and burying us. Earlier in the week it was the farming communities around us, we just watched on the evening news. And thanked our lucky stars it skipped right by us.
Now it’s our turn. We already had a couple of feet on the ground. But it hasn’t stopped falling , steadily, all day. And it just keeps coming. Everything is weighted down with snow.
I have a fire in the stove, no cars are on the roads. It’s very pretty and Christmasy though.
Still no snow here
I’d quite like a bit; I could take a day off skool and play in the park, then when I get cold, I can come back to get all toasty by the fire and have hot chocolate. And cos I’m technically a grownup, I could even put booze in the hot chocolate.
It’s still unseasonably mild though- we’ve only had one proper frost. This is actually annoying, as I have an oca plant I want to harvest, but it’s best to leave it for a few weeks after all the top growth gets frosted (basically all the stuff in the stems plumps up the tubers). I had it in the polytunnel during the one proper frost, so it didn’t get killed and it’s now thinking about regrowing…
Spent the day defilthifying the place and buying gifts for assorted small humans; a uni friend’s kids and my small neices. This is the one I’ve mentioned before; she doesn’t have any money or family in the hemisphere, and it felt so very unfair putting so much effort into finding something my neices don’t already own (they have sooo many toys), when her boys, the same age, have practically nothing. I can afford it, so why not?
I went to the toyshop just before it closed, so it wasn’t as much like Hades as it could have been. Not like the time I made the mistake of visiting Hamleys in London on the last Saturday before Christmas and I got kicked out the fire exit by the police because the crush was reaching dangerous levels… Don’t do that, kids.
West Virginia checking in. It is cold. It snowed during the night and off and on all morning. There isn’t much traffic and all of the vehicles I do see are covered with slush.
LadyBeth’s internal clock must have went off because this morning I couldn’t find her
I have balls of crumbled foil in the pot because it is supposed to keep Jolene from playing in it. (It doesn’t, but it makes crinkly noises which alert me to go and yell at her. Which bothers her not at all, but at least I’ve distracted her.)
So I started picking up the balls and looking under them and LadyBeth was holding onto one. I put it back the same way I’d found it and put a cotton ball soaked in sugar water close in case she wanted some calories.
I’ll leave her alone and hope that she wakes up in the spring.
We were planning on going the the park for the big light display tonight but changed our minds. I also didn’t go to the capital. There are a bunch of STAY HOME alerts over icy roads so that’s what we are doing.
I’m pretty sure that they will remember your kindness long after the toys are forgotten. You are good people ![]()
I tried a chunk of the chili meat. I think it’s done. I could have had some for lunch, but I’ll just keep it warm on the stove until dinner. For lunch I had three slices of salami with sweet-hot mustard, a couple of chunks of Gouda, and five dilly beans.
In early-September (the 3rd), I ordered my wife a Christmas present at the same time I ordered her birthday presents. I got her a Norwegian tuque/beanie/knit cap. I’d hoped to get her a couple/few more good things, but I’ve been preoccupied by my looming job loss, and I haven’t been able to get any hints at what she may want or need. A week and a half until Christmas, and I have no ideas. ![]()
Cookie-making with daughter went well. Listened to some 70s music and some funk on the Dot whilst cookie-ing. She brought some Almond Roca, so she’s still in the will. We still have a couple of kinds to make in the coming week. She’s finally got her tax issues being ironed out. The IRS will come up with a payment plan and a revised amount owed, so hopefully she can get this behind her.
We had a bit of snow. About an inch and a half. I woke up to a winter wonderland outside. All the trees were frosted. Once the sun came out they defrosted. Now it is just cold and getting icy.
I have Monday and Tuesday off. Eye appointment first on Monday. Then the big decision, French toast for breakies or salmon for lunch.
Flood history was something that never crossed my mind until this last move. Sis alerted me to check if any contenders had flooded during Harvey. Good to know that my current apartment has not flooded since being built in 1970. I’m sorry about your friend, lily.
It’s still 52F here, but a freeze is predicted for overnight, so Sis is staying home today to get her NOLA style garden prepped for it.
(Monty python voice) Oh the luxury!! We got up to a rousing 15 ferrets today. Dog parked anyway, and stopped by the museum, cuz my boss brings her doggo in on sundays. So they got a little wrasstle.
THAT RODENT SOB JUST KNOCKED OVER THE FEEDER!
French Toast
It’s down to 33 Ferrets(and 1 naughty squirrel) here.
It never got above 5F today, but by Tuesday we’ll be in the 40s. Screwy weather.
Damn, it’s 5:30 and I’m ready for bed. I gotta move somewhere that doesn’t get dark at 4.
