(Old) It's still dark MMP

Greetings from Sunny Las Vegas! It’s surprsingingly cool here a meere 90F/27C at noon under a clear blue sky.

I’m now “enjoying” a couple hour break between flights and just paid way too much for a Reuben sandwich that had approximately zero corned beef in it. I’m used to high prices in airports but it’s been a long time since I fell for the “leave out the main ingredient” trick. Sigh. Then again, it’s too easy to overeat on the road, so a “diet Reuben” might be just the ticket.

I rolled out of bed at 0445 to start my irkday. Which ends around 9pm home time a thousand miles from here. Sunrise happened as I was rocketing down the freeway to irk. Such fun. Dinner should be hole-in-the-wall Mexican unless we’re late or get to the hotel just exhausted. Short night planned of course and back in the saddle at dawn on Tue.

Anyhow as to y’all
Wow! lotta news. I can’t do justice to it all, although I read it all.

Wordy: {{hugs}} as you start Mom’s last lap. Mom having panic attacks when that wasn’t something she used to do is an unhappy sign. Maybe it was just lack of food, but the “don’t leave me alone” cry is usually somebody watching the door to the end opening up before them.

Cookie: Sorry to hear it’s a blue day. Here’s to a better afternoon and tomorrow.

I get it now, but I initially thought you were supposed to smear the paste onto the bum …

I know the feeling. Still sucks, but as long as there are other prospects on the horizon …

Sometimes, you just need whatever little fun diversion you can get in life. It doesn’t have to “go” anywhere or mean anything huge & cosmic … sometimes, just enjoying each other’s company, however you can, is enough.

I LOL’d, and then thought, “That poor town. (City?) They’re never gonna live that damn movie down. I wonder if the residents hate the Coen brothers.”

You … you DO know we’re here for each other, right? Big or little.
You’re going through some tough stuff; vent away! We can at least commiserate, offer unwanted advice, or rub you with a trout, as needed.

Sounds like that’s just what she needed … food, and company.

:musical_note: Miss Mary Mack, Mack Mack … :notes:

Welcome home! Sleeping in your own damn bed is the BEST, innit?

So … no cleaning today. They did an initial consult/inspection, X-rays, etc. as per their office procedure. Fine by me; I appreciate care that emphasizes prevention vs. cure.

Apparently, despite years of no professional care, my mouth-stones are in decent shape.

I do already have an appointment for the actual cleaning, in a few weeks, though. I asked for another Monday, and immediately heard one of the techs explain to the person in charge of scheduling, “She works at Scribs Pizza.”
Cue much whispering and smiling, and some banter between us all about who likes what.

I feel like a local celebrity, y’all. It kills me that my parents are so ashamed of my job; I can’t go anywhere in this town in my work shirt without hearing, “Heeeey Scribs pizza! Yeah!”

So bread, cabbage, and … Thousand Island?

Remembered I had half a bottle of red wine sitting in the fridge from the last time I made pot roast. Since 1a.) I had one more chunk of cow in the freezer, and 2b.) that wine - like me - ain’t gettin’ younger or fresher, there is now some cow with wine, Worshershersher, onions, N.O.T. and …

{ OMG I forgot carrots, shit, BRB }

… carrots & bay leaves in my teensy slow cooker. Since the meat was still frozen solid (damn. Wish I’d thought of this before the dentist) it’ll be a hot minute before anything is ready.

Meanwhile, there’s chicken. Lots of chicken. I wanted to use leftovers to make Thai rolls (lettuce, peanut sauce, rolled in rice paper) but kept demolishing the chicken.
Will hafta roast more.

Meanwhile, it’s cool (roughly 70F !!) and drippy. Perfect “cross stitch on the back steps” weather.

Yeah. I consciously agree strongly with you. Subconsciously, I’m afraid I still have a lot of Evangelical Christian programming that says “the only point of romantic involvement is that it lead to a marriage that lasts until you die.” Which is obvious bullshit, but was drilled pretty deeply into my brain. Still working on excising it.

From what I can tell, they like it! You can get little wood-chipper Christmas ornaments at the North Dakota Welcome Center there.

The thing I like best about being retired is NOT getting up early, but whenever I want. However, this morning I was awake by 6:00 AM

I don’t drink much, but I watched a Max Miller historical cooking/drinking video yesterday, the one on hardtack and grog. So for no good reason I bought a bottle of rum and assembled the grog. It’s so fast and easy, and I can tell that will be a problem, because I LIKED it.

If you have never watched Max Miller go right now to YouTube and look him up. I even bought the cookbook. Dude has a sense of humor as well as helping one learn about cooking, and that things have not always been like they are now in the kitchen.

Die_Capacitrix , my monitor was out from Monday to Saturday and I felt cut off from the world, not being able to be online.

Just dropped in to share a minor bit of trivia. If you happen to be looking toward the east late at night and see an exceptionally bright reddish object and wonder what it is, it’s Jupiter. At this point in mid-August it rises around 11:00 PM in your local time zone. Closer to the end of the month it will rise about an hour earlier. It’s currently the brightest celestial object in the sky other than the moon.

I’m in the center of town with lots of tall trees, tonight maybe I’ll go out to where I can see that.

Are you familiar with the joys of. . .tinea cruris? AKA jock itch or even “crotch rot” (as we called it in 'Nam")? Well, I woke up on Saturday with a rip-roaring case of it; possibly the worst I’ve ever had. Burning, itching, stinging nastiness from out of nowhere. Difficult to walk, painful to sit, another plague visited upon me while I’m trying to pull myself out of my other miseries. Cancelled my PT today because the thought of having to put on underwear was too much to contemplate. Yes, I’m treating it with Lamisil and hydrocortisone, which are also painful to apply, and it will eventually go away to skulk about for a future date. In the meantime, I’m miserable. Now I’ll go pout in a corner.

Howdy Y’all! Been a day of high sloth. I had to lest Pilot take away my sloth cred! We had quality cee-mint pond time, nappage, day drinkin’, and et ribs from Sonny’s. I hear thunder rumblin’s in the distance as I post. Let it storm, I say!

shoe yay for dental/vision stuff gettin’ figured out. Hope the naturalization thing is figured out soonest. Also, yay on you bein’ a local celeb! :sunglasses:

cookie hope things are better now. Feel free to come in and vent, or whine, or whatever you need.

Niner sorry about the Minneapolis gig. Here’s hopin’ the Fargo gig comes through soonest if that’s what you want. Also, yay on the romance. Even if it does not go anywhere it’s still fun.

{{{wordy}}} it’s so hard watchin’ a parent go through that. FWIW, I think you’re doin’ all the right things. Bein’ there for your mom and her knowin’ you are there for her is the best thing all around.

Die glad y’all made it back home safely.

Nellie keep positive thoughts re the surgery. So glad your sis can be there for you. We’re here for you via keyboard.

BooFae hope all is OK with Shadow. Perhaps some fancy albacore tuna will help.

MetalMouse glad you got the car rental figured out. Rentals are always weird to drive IME.

doggio sorry the full-time gig didn’t work out. Appropriate/inappropriate appendages crossed one of the other two will.

Bumba a little bit at a time and before y’all know it everything will be done and the house sold.

GodBod you’re a kolledge stoodint now. That’s the way you’re supposed to live. OK, it’s what I did, but I had a very misspent youth. Then again, it’s what most everybody else did as well, so maybe it is what you’re supposed to be doin’.

Home!!! Drove home thru a major frawg-stranglin’, toad-soakin’ deluge. Of course it rained - I watered my veggie patch this morning. Stoopit rain.

Among other chores at school, I reset all of the Linksys hot spots - it appears all but 1 are working - and it would be the one in FCD’s classroom… I also replaced a burnt-out outlet and helped FCD install 4 new circuits for microwaves for the studii. And I did a lot of sweeping and hauling garbage and making labels.

On the way home, I had to stop at Food Lion for the ingredients for the french toast casserole that he’s taking tomorrow for the breakfast pot luck. I built the casserole and now I’m about to assume the chillage position in my recliner. I’ll bake it in the morning.

Kids tomorrow. Rah.

( slap, clap) All dressed in black, black, black, ( slap, clap)

sari, was it Rayleigh who is Ripple’s relative? It sounds like he’s channeling Ripple with the mail into his coming inside treat.

Yay on getting some successful adulting done shoe!

Welcome back niner. Sorry about the job interview, but good luck on your mutual crush.

{{{wordy}}} You’re doing the right thing for your mom. May the coming weeks bring you all some peace.

I love Max Miller baker! I watch him, and for some of the other nerdy cooking stuff, the Epicurious channel.

That sounds miserable AF cookie. I hope that you get some relief soonest.

I didn’t sleep for crap last night. I fell asleep for a couple of hours, woke up, then couldn’t get back to sleep until about an hour before I had to get up, so it was a long, long day.

Because of the OT, I called Nelson’s former (and current again) sitter. She lives on the way to irk and she’s agreed to sit for him this week, even answering her door at ~0300. I feel lucky that, not only does she love my dog, her dog gets along with Nelson famously, but that she’s willing to get up long enough to bring him in before going back for a nap with both of the doggies. Miss Vicky is an awesome human being.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Howdy, all. Just checking in to say I’m still here. Going through some shit that I don’t need to burden you all with. Some good, mostly bad.

Be safe, y’all!

It worked out OK. We didn’t have to run, but it was still much closer than I like to cut it. We de-planed in terminal B, walked through the flashing neon tunnel, and strolled onto the next plane at terminal C without breaking stride. Another 15 minute delay and we would have been in trouble.

Back home, unpacked, and relaxing now.

Pilot, I probably walked right by you at the Vegas airport. Where’d you get that “Reuben” so I can avoid it in the future?

Wordy, I will echo Nellie’s sentiment that you are doing everything right for your mom, even if it doesn’t feel like it now. Just keep being there for her. She knows.

Doggio, I barely had a minute to spare on this trip, but I’m sure to be back in the Triangle again before long. Somehow someday I’ll buy you a beer.

This was an entertaining rabbit hole. Thanks for the recommendation!

Thanks, I’ll look for it! (Usually if I see a bright red spot in the sky, I think, “Ah, Mars!” and congratulate myself on my knowledge of the cosmos.
Then I remember, these are the cosmos with which I’m familiar. And then I think, “Yeah, I don’t know shit about starshine!”

With silver buttons, buttons, buttons … :musical_note:

Nuts to that. You don’t need to, and you don’t have to (if you don’t wanna) but you always certainly may do so.

It’s done. The lil guy went peacefully and the house is so much emptier now than it was this morning.

Currently we are both sitting around not crying in front of each other. We will be able to keep it together unless we see the other one start crying, then things will get very soggy very quickly.

He was a very good cat and gave us 18 years of purrs and nighttime snuggles. We already miss him terribly and we haven’t gone to bed yet.

Exactly same here. So, after I had lunch and was trying to watch my soaps, I fell asleep on the lazyboy recliner. I didn’t even have the footrest up.

After I woke up, we took the cars to Kroger gas and got $1 off per gallon, it still cost $2.89/gal.

Then Hubs lit the charcoal grill and marinated and grilled the chicken breasts while I made a Knorr sidedish of fettuccine in a creamy chicken flavored sauce, mixed my homemade dressing into 1/3 of a package of coleslaw, sauteed yellow squash and orange bell peppers.

{{{wordy and Mom}}} you are a model of what I believe is the right way to be with a parent nearing end of life; GREAT job; you’re a wonderful caring daughter.

I’m so sorry. The quiet is soooo deafening, and heartbreaking.

Happy Moonday!

It was cool this morning when I left for the doctor, but by the time I came out it was miserably hot.
I was there a long time.
All the damn forms I had to fill out. One about alcohol and how much I drink and when.
Then another about safety bars in my bathroom and tripping hazards in my home, and other stuff.
I took all my pill bottles, just so I could fill out what I take, how much, and when. I could have brought my list from home.

In the good news department
I got my check today!
From the amount of the check, it looks like Niece1 may have sold the stock and gave everybody cash.
She said she had trouble finding somebody at TD Ameritrade that knew what they were doing.
I can cross that worry off my mind.
Now I’ll have enough in the bank and it has enough time to clear for closing on the 31st.
I got to bed very late last night. I found some stuff online and got caught up in it.
Just as I was standing up to go to bed, I heard a rustling noise, and there was a bird flying around the living room. It was crazy, flying around in circles. I have no idea where it came from. I yelled for my son to help and the bird flew at him as soon as he opened his bedroom door.
I finally got brave enough to run into the kitchen and get the dogs out the back door. Then I went to open the front door. I held it open until my son could set it to stay open.
Eventually, the bird flew out the door.

Echo

Imgur
Misiu, who is still not feeling well today. He’s not really sick, just not himself.
I said that too soon, both of the have the zoomies in the house (it’s raining outside), and Echo is joining in. Not with the zooming, but at the pauses to wrestle.

Imgur
Rayleigh

Red, Rayleigh and Misiu are full brothers, but they are Ripple’s half-brothers (same father).
Rayleigh looks a lot like Ripple and he has some of his perky, bratty personality. He also lays on his right hip and left shoulder just like Ripple.
Rayleigh is the chow hound who is always looking for a treat.
I guess one good thing about your work hours, the drunks are off the road by then and rush hour hasn’t started yet.

It made me hurt to read that Cookie.

For baking, just to watch because I’m too lazy to actually do it

and

{{{Wordy}}} I’m so sorry about your mom, and you.
My mother didn’t like to be alone, especially near the end.

{{{Nellie}}} Every experience is different. My mother breezed through her first knee replacement, the second one was harder for her. My park friend is doing so well that he is going to be allowed to drive in a week. The people I know who have done the best are the ones who push through the pain and get out and do stuff.

Dinner sounds good Shoe. My dinner will be hard boiled eggs in ramen noodles. Sounds yukky, but tastes good.

Welcome home Dicy.

I hope Shadow feels better soon

{{{JtC}}}

{{{JtC}}} you’re a good critter mama! Have a cleansing cry and cherish the happy memories.

sari - puppers are too cute! And congrats on the $$$!

Tired. I had a refreshing shower and I will mosey back to bed shortly. Hope I sleep. I need it.

What a perfect description of how it is.

Hubs took the monster gate down and George is really worried about this. Hubs carried GG around the master suite and showed him what was behind all the doors, but it will probably be a while before GG is ready to go in and explore. VBC wanted to take a nap on our bed, but GG started whining so she is cuddled up on the spare bed with him as usual.

Them’s some handsome puppers, sari!!!
