Around the time I moved to Switzerland, my dad had a coworker complaining about their child moving to Olympia. From Seattle. She didn’t get much sympathy from my dad.
My parents moved away from their parents soon after they got married. For that reason my dad they shouldn’t complain too much. The other thing he says is that they raised me to be independent, but they may have overshot the mark.
Managed to get to my parents, despite filling up my flight bingo card.
First flight:
Customer checked in bags one day early, and doesn’t get on the plane.
Take 10 minutes to find and remove baggage.
Miss landing window at destination, so have to wait another 30 minutes on the ground.
Flight attendants serve breakfast on the ground, before we even take off.
Arrive 45 minutes late.
Due to personnel shortage, have to wait 10 minutes for stairs and bus.
Second flight:
First passport check to exit Schengen
Second passport check to „enter“ the U.S., where hubby gets his SSSS inspection.
Finish inspection, hear first announcement for second flight, which is at the gate at the very end of that part of the terminal.
Get on plane, doors closed, they have to get stairs to being on a technician for a minor thing. Takes 20 minutes.
Now there’s a drone at the airport, so no landings, and take offs are restricted.
We got a take off time just 15 minutes later.
Despite leaving one hour late, we arrived at our final destination only 25 minutes late.
Despite all the little hiccups, the overall flight experience was mundane, which is definitely my preference,
And Ivar‘s has extra large clams for their clams & chips - very yummy.
Waiting for friends to pick me up for today’s adventure. Probably should go put on my shoes.
Welcome to a typical day at irk for me. Every day. Sigh.
Non-stop vexations and an overall OK-ish result created by a lot of ducks paddling invisibly underwater / behind the scenes. If only they’d all paddle towards success, instead of in every random direction imaginable, with only a slight plurality pointed sorta towards generally where success is supposedly stored.
OTOH, I have 67 calendar days left, and today and tomorrow are guaranteed non-work days. I probably only have 20-30 irk days remaining. If I really wanted to minimize irking it might be down to a dozen. Yikes!
The painters are finally doing the trim on my building. I realized I don’t like to have people outside my window. I know they’re just doing their jobs, but it feels stalker-ish.
I’ve been mulling over who could accompany me to the doc’s on Monday, to take notes and to speak up if needed. Most of my friends work. One who doesn’t is very shy and won’t speak up. And the last one, the retired nurse, is apt to take over the appointment. I’ll keep mulling.
I’m confused, as usual. Why did they need stairs? The stairs were on a technician? Glad you made the flight OK and that it was a smooth trip. Let the good times roll!
flyboy, that sucketh mightily.
Vroom, congrats on the apartment.
Ugh, why so soon? It IS hard to have kids move far away. I hope they move back at some point. And I hope you get to travel to see them now and then. Missouri loves company! (Sorry. I had to say it, but I really hope you see them often.)
shoe, once when I was driving, a moth flew up my skirt. For a little while there, I was yelling and thrashing around like a sinner at a tent revival.
The worst pain I ever felt was my first kidney stone attack. But I came to the ER with “severe abdominal pain” and until diagnosed I couldn’t get anything. What I finally got was Demerol, right through the IV, and it was like “pain? What pain?” And like you I could tell how people got addicted.
That’s the biggie! You love your kids, but they ain’t your grandkids!!!
I watched the series about the Borgias covering the same time period - not nice folks at all!!
Home, with a brace on my right hand to keep my ring finger and pinky stabilized. between that and ice, I might get the trigger finger to relax. The movement is what aggravates the tendon. Failing that, I’ll go back for a shot, and if that doesn’t do it, there’s a minor surgical procedure. So it begins. Typing is now a challenge.
I helped FCD get the measurements he wanted and he’s finishing up his model and calculations. Then we ran by MIL’s to take the 'nanner bread and 'maters. I need to empty the dishwasher, but nothing else on the agenda. Which is good, since my right hand is close to useless.
The plumbing company called. The plumber that came out is booked through the weekend. We’re scheduled for Monday morning between 8 and 10… unless there’s an emergency. Other plumbers are on vacation, so emergencies take precedence over our non-emergency leak.
Annoying! We’re experiencing The Vanishing Contractor in multiple domains. I think we’re up to 3 no-show/no-contact-with-bid despite assurances to the contrary. It’s enough to make a girl go take an electrical repair class at the community college.
This plumbing company has always provided excellent service. But their hideously expensive. Like, I called for a suspected clog last week. It should have been a matter of putting a snake down an access point. Easy job. But the cheapest option was over $1,000. It turned out that the cleanout had been broken when we had a stump removed. (Worked for a long time with an open top pipe!) So he had to dig a hole and replace it… for $3,000.
The new exterior spigot (plus whatever he had to do to get water to it) was only $300, which I think is reasonably not-unreasonable. It’s covered under the warranty. Or it’d better be!
Afternoon all. Swimming and Sauna have been completed, if you believe the scale at the gym I lost 6 lbs between last evening and this afternoon, which I seriously doubt, but hey, at least the number is heading in the right direction. Yard has been aerated now hoping the rain shows up tomorrow (60% chance right now) to break down those dirt plugs before I have to mow on Sunday. Garbage picked up and can put back in the garage, so my work for the day is done. Debating between eating out and Lean Cusine Fettuchini for dinner…we’ll see.
Flyboy, hopefully if they installed the faucet they’ll take responsibility for it and not charge you…but don’t bet the ranch on it…
dicey, don’t know what was your first airport stop, but reminded me of Charles DeGaulle, which is an airport I hate with the fury of a thousand suns. And yeah, airlines these days build a lot of padding into their schedules (IMHO), so if everything goes right you arrive early (Yeah!) and if things are a mess you still aren’t that late. Glad you made it safe and sound.
nellie, pity BBBoo is half a continent away, she’d be perfect. Hope things go well.
At a guess (Dicey can correct me), they had pulled away (or were not at a jetbridge) and had to bring out portable stairs so the tech person could board the plane (been there).
OK, a couple more of my You Tube channels posted, so I’ll watch them and then do some TV stuff before dinner. Take care all.
Spent the day dealing with Social Security, Medicare, thinking listlessly about how to select a Medicare supplement plan while staring at walls of web page fine print, and talking with my 401K provider.
All stuff I ought to have done 30-60 days ago.
As outlined in other posts in the retirement threads if you care, I did learn some useful stuff but mostly it was just drudging along executing the setup I’d already planned.
Tonight we will join a former church friend of Her Ladyship’s and that lady’s live-in ex-husband for dinner at the ever-underwhelming Olive Garden. It’s where they want to go. They’re nice folks. I hope we can find a quiet spot in the restaurant otherwise 3 of us will be shouting “WHAT?” at each other non-stop. Being older / deafer is not fun, and getting not funner.
Now long-divorced, he’s fallen on hard times with medical issues and so has moved in with her while he gets treated. They both hold out public hope he’ll recover enough to get out on his own again, but I think his next stop is Independent Living if he can come up with the cash. Which he probably can’t. Another slow-motion tragedy.
Been a rainy day here, with intermittent thunder since late morning. No great volume of rain, but dripping on and off. Happy frogs, not drowning frogs.
Howdy Y’all! I got stuff done and then we brunched. Then it was back to da cave where we had quality cee-mint pond time, nappage, day drinkin’, sloth, and general overall uselessness. Now we are inside in the a/c and all showered. Chillage ensues. TWPTB say we shall have rain within the next two hours. We shall see.
Vroooom great news on the housin’. May you get moved soonest and cheapest as possible.
Alas, I was wrong. I thought from the racket they were starting on my building. Nope, it was a building across the way. They worked on it for almost 4 hours. Now they’re on the next building, which means they may not get to mine today. I wouldn’t care except that the balcony stuff is cluttering up my apartment.
My sister had a good suggestion about the doc visit. She said I should send him my concerns via MyChart so he has a chance to consider them before Monday’s appointment.
Mooooom, how long will you have to wear the brace? It sounds like a PITA, but of course, if it helps, it’ll be worth it.
That happened to me after one of the corneal transplants. They gave me Demerol IV, and I thought, “Hello, new best friend!” Years later, I had Demerol by IV push after another surgery, and it didn’t affect me that way, thank heavens. I’m addictophobic. (It is too a word! Ask Swampy!
You know, I never really understood “get your ducks in a row” before this. And how exciting that you’re in the home stretch, retirement-wise! Also, my Italian mama was also not a fan of OG. If she had to go there, she had breadsticks and a salad.
She would be!
Ohhh, I get it now! Silly me. Why didn’t I consider that “being” was supposed to be “bring”? D’oh. Thank you!
My late aged Italian MIL was the same way. Nobody’s Italian cooking was good enough for her.
But she loved Olive Garden. Even when she was ancient and only ate small meals, there was something about “All you can eat salad and bread!!1111!!1!!! ALL you can EAT!!!1!1!!” that totally made her day.
She was fun in a silly way. I miss the old gal, I truly do.
You may recall we had ants in the cats’ food, and that we sprayed them with 409 (which dissolves them). After about a week, they were back and we sprayed them with 409 again. This time they came back more quickly. So today I put down some Terro Ant Bait. Our front door opens inward, with the hinges on the left. I put one trap outside of the door, on the right. I put one trap inside of the door, on the right. I put one trap between the door and the screen, on the left. The inside one has a few dead ants around it. The outside one has what looks like hundreds of dead ants around it. The other one, between the door and the screen, appears to have not been found yet.
I’m going to give it a few weeks at least and see if it makes a difference. It is a pain, but I take it off for certain things - like chopping onions. But I will sleep in it and I’ll probably try icing the hand.
I just harvested SEVEN more 'maters. I’ll offer a few to Daughter. We ate 2 with our supper tonight - very yum! There are at least 5 more that will be picked this weekend.
We got lots of rain this afternoon, and it looks like a good chance of more this weekend. So much for stripping the teak. Tomorrow, we’ll be testing the new PA system that will be installed in Daughter’s school. FCD is designing what goes where, but parent volunteers will be installing it all.
There were 3 parents at the school today - one installing LED lights in classrooms and 2 painting a room. This little school has a lot of very active parental volunteers. And they seem to really like Daughter, which helps after all the crap she’s been getting from her predecessor.
These days if we go to OG, it’s for soup and salad. I find their entrees to be seriously mediocre. MIL LOVES their lasagna - she wants to get a whole one to go and freeze it. But doesn’t it start out frozen anyway? I understand they don’t so much cook there as nuke - anyone else ever heard that?
OK, time to put the brace back on and assume the chill position.
May your finger heal with speed Moooooom. As far as OG entrees, if they are like places such as Applebee’s, you are correct, most are frozen dinners. When I worked at the restaurant supply outfit, Applebee’s was one of the customers at our location and even the steaks are marinated, vacuum.sealed and frozen.
Glad that you arrived safely dicey!
I had a quick once over at the dealership. Since the driver’s door was damaged and repaired from the !@#$ing dump truck that hit me and ran when the car was new, it isn’t covered by the car warranty and I have to go to Franklin to the Hyundai body shop that repaired it to have it fixed. However, I do now have a clue on how to make it stop dinging.
I grocery shopped at my old town at the Kroger down the street from the dealership. It has become a super-sized store since I moved and I couldn’t easily find a damn thing, despite walking acres. The cashier who began my order moved to bagging once someone came back from break, halfway through checking me out. The original cashier was a nice, friendly woman somewhere around my age. The one who replaced her shouldn’t have had a customer facing position. 'Nuff said.
I’ve completed a heroic garage-cleansing circuit from the bottle return center to St Vinnie’s to the food bank to Habitat for Humanity. Soon I’ll make a visit to the used book store to see if they want to buy any of the books in better shape.
