We are! We’re heading off to a holiday park in south Wales with a group of friends. We are celebrating a wedding anniversary and two milestone birthdays in the group and the best way to do it, is to get together for some serious partying!
Mollie I’m glad to hear Mrs Magill likes her counsellor, that is a very positive start. I agree that starting on the patches should wait until you’re back from your road trip. It’s annoying to have another week to wait, but you don’t want anything to spoil the trip.
Bright Tree hope the vaxxing goes well and you don’t have any nasty after-effects. I should be able to get a flu shot for free through my work, but I am not eligible for a covid booster (too young and not sick enough). I’d have one if I could, although I’d have to source it privately and that’s next to impossible and too expensive.

Yesterday was a good day, there were only two of us in the office so we spent some time chatting and putting the world to rights I got a lot done and have left a handover for New Manager and an update email for holidaying minion as he’ll come back on Monday and will need to know what I’ve done while he’s been off (I was covering his role, and his mailbox). The update list was quite long but nothing urgent and no disasters either so it’s just a catch-up on what he’s missed.
I got out 5 minutes early and managed to get on an earlier train from campus so I got home in good time. The new catsitter came to meet us, she said hello to Muffin but the other girlies were nowhere to be seen. We showed her photos instead. She’s a really nice lady, and does pet/home sitting as a full time job with her husband (he runs the boarding kennels and doggy daycare side). She’ll be looking after the mogs while we’re away next week.
Today I was up early and made myself presentable for being about the public. We’re off to a music festival in Sheffield today, several people I know are going so it should be quite a sociable day out. We’re staying overnight and will be home again tomorrow afternoon, then I need to get my list together for packing on Monday. Better get my skates on!
If I had too many apples I’d be pressing and fermenting 'em into cider… I have a net on a stick; where I previously lived I went round all the hedgerow apple trees and collected 'em for this purpose. I still have most of the fermenting kit, but no press. We used to have an apple pressing day at a local allotment site where you could bring your own apples, and the guy running it just kept a tithe of the juice as payment.
I do technically know someone at irk with an apple press who may be persuaded to loan it me, but I haven’t spent enough time roaming the area to know where the good trees are round here yet. Been too busy with the house.
No real plans for the day yet. The forecast was nice and sunny and 20 centipedes, but it’s currently overcast and looks like more rain.

I am about to embark on a journey to find a certain set of military papers that belong to MusicMan. They are the ones that you can use in the after(military)life to get a discount on your new car. They are the ones that we said that we had and they gave us a discount. They are the ones that are supposed to be in a certain folder in a certain place in our house. They are the ones that the people at the dealership keep asking for since we said that we had them. They are the ones that trump the military veteran license plates that we had and put on the car already :headdesk:. No, only said papers can prove that a veteran lives in our house. Oh, and did I mention that we’ve ordered a second set of papers but they haven’t gotten here yet but we really need them?
Ugh.
Does it really matter how the water is brought to a boil? I’m not being snarky here and I know there’s a lot of joking and pearl-clutching on the subject of making tea, but really, boiling water is boiling water, right? Or am I missing something…
What apples are best for cider and what varieties are best avoided?
We start here with 66 Ferrets headed to low 80s with rain promised thru tomorrow morning, tho not starting till early afternoon, theoretically. This morning, we’ll finished the kiln vent installation and I’ll see how my little jars of underglaze restoration are doing. I need to pull out all the large jars - some underglaze, some finish glaze. I’m sure some, if not all, will need rehydrating. And once the glazes are ready, I’ll have a go at the clay.
As I lay in bed, I was thinking about what I want to make. Since I’m not selling (yet?) I’m not sure what I’ll do. Probably some flower pots/planters. And at one point, I thought I’d do a clock. We’ll have to see what my arthritic hands are able to manage.
The end-of-season picnic at the marina is today - dunno if the rain will stop it, tho they do have a big tent over tables. I don’t know if FCD will want to go or not. So we shall see.

Morning everyone, it is a lovely foggy and wet day today. We are under a flood watch and are expecting thunderstorms and heavy rain with highs of 80F. If I was cleared to pull weeds, this would be a perfect evening for it.

So no painting is happening ATM. My painter’s girlfriend was pregnant and the doctor was worried about the baby. Yesterday they went back to the doctor and the four month old fetus doesn’t have a heartbeat. So they sent her home to “allow her body to absorb the fetus naturally”.
Health care for old, post-menopausal women in this state is great. Female reproductive care in red states is why I am at the capital every weekend. I know that our resident trumpie thinks I’m there protesting their orange god, but really I’m focused on what is happening to women’s rights all over, not just in red states and this is a sad example of the problem.
The girlfriend has an avocado sized lump of dead meat rotting in her uterus. A therapeutic D&C would fix her up in an afternoon, but that is super close to an abortion and there aren’t a lot of doctors in red states willing to risk doing such a procedure on a poor stranger.
Its the weekend so they can’t make any calls, so they are just going to drive to Virginia and check into a hospital there. I hope she comes home alive.
Now that I’m thinking about apples, I’m seeing loaded trees almost everywhere I look. I also have a nice stainless steel cheese press that would work nicely for fruit as well. Cider is very popular here and the apple butter festival is at the end of the month. I might start looking into making cider, fermentation is a popular sport during long winters.
I had some paw-paw cider a few months ago and that was some great stuff, but I’m not ambitious enough to consider doing that myself. That’s an activity for someone with kids they can send into the tick filled forests to harvest wild paw-paws. So far, I have been tick free and want to keep it that way.
The Cardinals across the street are happy enough with their constant supply of sunflower seeds that they are raising another chick and just brought him over to visit. So very cute!

Went to the grocery store and bought ingredients for making cookies. So I should go make cookies. But it’s a really nice day and I want to sit on the patio and enjoy the sun.

Umm, honestly you can pretty much use anything, assuming you’re talking about the fermented type.
Traditional cider apples are so bitter and acid that they’re completely inedible, but they’re not very common and using a mix of cooking, dessert and even some crab apples is probably the best option for most people. The only thing to avoid is using all apples sweet enough to eat fresh- some in the mix is fine, and it may be OK if they’re right on the edge of too acid, but if it’s all sweet mild ones it’ll wind up tasting really bland. I’m not an expert though, I only did it a couple of times, and I was just using ones I found in the parks and from hedgerows germinated from random apple cores, plus some from a friend’s cooking apple tree; most of them wouldn’t have been named types.
Have removed the squash plant and it can be compost. Stoopit thing was like a bad male writer; just male flowers for ages, no females at all, and when it did finally come up with some some, they just stayed completely undeveloped.
I’m completely washed out today, dunno why, I slept fine last night. Feel like I could sleep all day as well though.

FCM, it’s not the boiling of the water for tea or coffee; it’s actually the temperature. My kettle can be set to different temperatures depending on what you’re drinking.

52, yay for an easy thermostat fix!
Mr. Taters is still struggling with whatever is going on with him, but he hasn’t vomited and is keeping food down. Last night, he even managed a bit of steak and some saucy noodles. Earlier today, I had him drink broth. He becomes full rather easily, so it doesn’t take much.
I sent a surprise package to my daughter, and it arrived early! She has a favorite childhood ornament from a broken set that I had. I have spent YEARS looking for a replacement set, and finally found one on eBay. I’ve looked there in the past, but this time I struck gold! Anyway, the set shipped to me to ensure they were in good condition, and they were like brand new!
I sent the package on Tuesday, and yesterday I received a note from my daughter saying this was the best thing she had ever received in the mail. She told me she was practically in tears. I didn’t tell her the package was coming, because I wanted it to be a total surprise. I’m glad I could make her day.
Other than watering posies and doing some general tidying, I didn’t do anything of note yesterday. I’m not sure what today will hold. Probably more of the same.

Oh hurray!!! I’m so happy for you, you must have been thrilled when you finally found the ornament.
It took an embarrassing amount of time for me to figure out why tea made in WV (at around 350f above sea level) tasted so much different than tea made in AZ at about ten times that altitude. Same tea, same blank tasting R/O water…but a different boiling point.
So I’m just sitting here thinking I’d like some cheese and onion enchiladas and putting together a mental shopping list. I could probably ask Hubs to go, but he isn’t that great at reading lists and tends to buy what he thinks I want instead. I’m not in the mood to deal with that today so I guess I’ll have to change into “going out in public” clothes and head to the grocery store.
That isn’t too horrible a prospect, though. Now is specialty cider season so I’ll probably find something fun to drink for me. I’ll just make him a pitcher of Margaritas because I know he won’t want any cider.
Is he getting full or does he just get tired of eating? Its gonna take him a few days to get his energy back and sometimes shoveling food into your piehole is harder than others.
A lot of it has to do with his esophagus being sore and raw. Some foods go down more easily than others. His stomach has shrunk too. Several days without normal food intake tends to shrink one’s tummy. And yes, he’s definitely more tired. Yesterday was the best he’s been, but he did take a couple of naps.
Ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch! I stubbed the absolute hell out of my big toe bringing things in from the garage - I misjudged the last step. The front of the nail is lifted and broken, and blood went everywhere. It’s bandaged up and throbbing a bit, but surprisingly not painful to walk on.
Main task for today will be fiddling with the robot vacuum. It’s not sounding the same or vacuuming up things like it should. I’m hoping it’s just a cat toy that got sucked up but there was nothing in the obvious areas.
Hot again so indoor chores!

Swampy and BBBoo agree on the show. It’s great to put on when I need something entertaining but not taxing. I generally skip the first three seasons on a rewatch though - I don’t find the Jenny Lee love interest plot interesting.

Taters sounds like the ornaments were the perfect gift! Meanwhile poor Mr Taters seems to still be going through it.
We have achieved kiln!! There was some cussin’ and fussin’ because there always is when you DIY. But the exhaust fans are working and the kiln did start heating up and all I have to do now is reconstitute a metric buttload of glaze and clay.
For now, tho, I’m having a lunch of leftover shrimp and broccoli and fried rice. Maybe after, I’ll get back to the glazes - I opened the cabinet and found waaaaay more than I remember having.
OK, this, to me, is just a tad much for a yacht…

Woke up with a mild vax ache, but nothing serious. Same for the wife. Grocery run later today. All puzzles puzzed: almost finished the NYT. Sadie has been fed and entertained and is now sitting in the kitchen staring at the refrigerator for some reason known only to a cat.
