Old Mother Hubbard Gets Stuffed in Her Cupboard

It’s not all bad. Alaska depends on tourism for a lot of its dollars. There is the contingent that would prefer that you mail the money to us and not actually bother us with your presence. It’s all part of the entitlement mentality that seems to predominate here these days. My idea for the state quarter that is coming out in a few years is that it would depict a hand being extended palm up. My views (as one of the three registered Democrats in Alaska) are not all that popular, it seems.

The verdict.

I’m shocked, I tells ya.

As **Mangetout ** seemed to hint at earlier, I have to reaffirm that the journalistic style of this newspaper is … well, odd, somehow.

Conversational, almost, and not as rigid as most newspaper reporting. I’d say it was a good thing, but it feels less impartial.

I dunno, it’s Friday, maybe I’m just going nuts.

Hmmm, guess there’s something to be said for the benefits of a cold climate. If Padgett had tried that in Texas, where he’s from, I reckon it would have been a lot less than five weeks before fluids started leaking out of that cupboard.

Otherwise, what AngelicGemma said. Specifically, ewwwwwwwwww.

They tend to go overboard with the purple prose on occasion. The media here tends to try someone publicly before the actual trial, which probably isn’t all that unusual. Most people accuse the paper of having a decidedly liberal bias on everything. It’s owned by McClatchey in CA, which makes the local right froth at the mouth.

Chefguy, this thread title rules more than any thread title has ever ruled before. I’ve giggled at it for 10 days now.

Okay,I give up. How do you get charged with first AND second degree murder? Or don’t I get to know, being a horrid liberal Californian outsider?

It’s a prosecutor’s option to charge as many offenses as s/he believes the evidence will support. That’s why, for example, someone can be tried for a group of charges such as, say, assault and battery, A&B with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, all arising out of, say, one beating with a baseball bat. The intent is to get a conviction on at least the lesser charges, if the jury can’t be persuaded that all elements of the more serious charges have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

So, in this case, the prosecutor is going for the most severe murder charge, but also putting into play charges with a lesser burden of proof, to have a better shot at conviction. This is a wise move, since the defense is:

I didn’t notice in a quick check of the story, but I bet there’s also charges related to improper disposal of a body – just in case the jury decides there’s not enough proof the guy actually klilled his mom.

So, Chefguy – how about an update?

See above posting for the verdict. He hasn’t been sentenced yet, to my knowledge.

Uh…what “above posting”?

It’s post number 23, Mama Tiger. The link is there to the verdict story. I had to sign up as a registered user to get it.

Oops, I guess I missed it in skimming through the thread. Thanks, ETF!
