We went to our favorite Japanese restaurant yesterday. It’s getting hard to find a Japanese restaurant run by actual Japanese people. Most of them have Korean or Chinese owners, and ditto cooks. Their food tastes pretty good, but something is always a little off. Our favorite joint has been run by the same guy for twenty years and he really knows his cooking.
I had tempura and sashimi combo, and Mr. brown had “kaisen don”, which is a big bowl of sushi rice topped with a large assortment of sliced sashimi. Damn, that was a good lunch.
I used to be able to go to this place about once a month, because it was five minutes from where I worked. But since I retired, we now have to drive twenty-five miles for a meal. But it’s worth it, even more so since it doesn’t happen very often now.
Today is exercise day, which means either going for a hike in a park or going to the gym. Since it’s raining right now, that means the gym, I guess. I dislike going. They play loud music not to my taste, and people camp on the machines while staring at their cell phones. But it has to be done, or I’ll end up feeble before my time.
My body decided that I should stay home from work today and rest. I got very nauseous and was having to head to the bathroom far too often for being able to work. I just woke up from a nap. We’ll see how it goes here for the next little bit.
@Seanette and @JaneDoe42 See I knew I was going to mess something up! It wouldn’t let me imbed the image for some reason, so here you go! Jax is the black and white tux and Oliver is the grey and white, and they were absolutely up to no good for this photo.
I’ve posted a bit about them elsewhere. Oliver survived a ride in my sister’s car engine when he was about 4 weeks old, and he was too weak and starved to survive on his own. Once my dog passed a few months later it was obvious that Oliver did not enjoy being the only animal in the house so I got Jax from a rescue.
Oh my gosh how adorable! Gormless George looks wonderful to cuddle up with.
MetalMouse I’ve considered a gym, but I’m mostly trying to find a way to get a little activity while I’m doing something normally sedentary. So I’d feel a bit odd to be casually strolling along on a treadmill while reading my Kindle for a couple of hours
FCM yes it’s basically a stripped-down treadmill. They’ve become popular to use with standing desks and aren’t really meant for running.
One of my high school friends forgot her FB password, so she created a new account. No biggie - I accepted her friend request. EXCEPT she’s been endlessly posting “vintage Christmas” pictures or links to old B&W Christmas movie clips. After less than one day, I’m ready to block her, but instead, I just selected “See Less.” If that doesn’t work, it’s block city, baby!!!
I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised - we were partners in 10th grade biology and she couldn’t handle dissecting the frog that had been in formaldehyde since the turn of the century, so I had to do the cutting while she took notes. Fine, whatever. I learned to look past her assorted quirks and mostly we got along fine.
Then once when I came home on leave, she was talking about the man she was sleeping with. He was married and she was complaining that he spent more time with his wife and his other girlfriend. Um, What?!?!?
The older she got, the odder she got, and at some point, she suddenly became passionate about religion, so her FB posts became preachy. I honestly can’t recall the last time I saw her - maybe 10 years? I guess after 50-ish years it’s not surprising that we’re not the friends we used to be. She got weird and I’m still as adorable as ever! Surely she doesn’t talk trash about me.
I have a treadmill and I’ve never run a step on it. At best, I’ll get it up to 3MPH while I watch TV. I haven’t been a runner since the Navy required me to pass PT annually. My exercise is either treading the mill or sitting on my butt on the stationary bike, watching TV in both cases. BTW, you’re kittehs are gorgeous!! I love tuxedo cats!
OK, no more futzing at the computer. I’m heading to the shower, then chores will begins. Quit distracting me, dammit!!
Morning all. Enjoying my big bowl of Cereal and an apple to break my fast, then onward into the day. Only adulting thing I need to do is go to the Credit Union to put some money into my savings, but otherwise not much on the agenda. Clear today but only 35F outside (getting to about 53F later) so indoors will be my usual location.
Thanks for those conga-rats on my weight loss; don’t think I can maintain it that low (I’m not that fond of exercising) but it’s nice having done it, We’ll see how things go. And Yay! for Sticky Buns and her winning her battle with the scales.
Sari, that’s a great picture of the trio; must have been perfect timing, getting three dogs to pose like that isn’t easy. Good luck with the mice eviction. And I grew up and older in houses with drapes on my windows, but down here window blinds are standard in maybe 95% of the houses; guess it depends on the region. Hope you warm up soon.
nellie, bad news on the leak (what is it with Mumpers and water problems?). But the explanation for the upstairs apartment is logical, but it also means the occupants don’t have a stake in how it is maintained, so you probably won’t be getting the cream of the crop as neighbors.
Raises hand (me too, my dear, me too)
FCM, we’re stopping at Lerwick too for only a day, will try to see as much as possible.
boo fae, enjoy the party.
I did do that, there are bus tours for it, and the scenery is just as spectacular as you can imagine.
{{Coppertone}}
FCM, sounds like you are staying busy; no idea what to do with the excess pads, would think someone could get some use from them. And as for old friend, we all change with age, some more than others (and some, like your friend, a way lot more)
lucky, I find eating at a place occasionally makes it more special; glad you enjoyed it. No music at my place (at least not loud) but lots and lots of TV’s…
Sticky Buns, good on ya for listening to your body. Many of us (raises hand) don’t do that often enough. Take care.
52, that’s a great shot, how you got them to both look around like that is marvelous. And you’d be surprised how many kindle-reading treadmill walkers there are (I tend to read old paperbacks from my collection while pedaling stationary bicycles).
And cereal and apple have been consumed and time has passed, so onward into the day. Have a good Thorsday all.
I just want to clarify that I do NOT weigh what it said on my scale. My scale is having its own personal issues today. I’m going to change the batteries and see if it’s more accurate.
They definitely look like they’re scheming something, all right.
Here’s my two, Buddy (orange) and Allie (Siamese mix). This is about as cordial as co-existence gets between them:
Allie was a shelter adoptee shortly after we lost her predecessor, Felix (RB), to old age in 2011. She’s definitely a frail little old lady these days, at 14 years old.
Buddy was a “community cat” (stray) around our apartment complex. We struck up a friendship, he started coming in to visit and started staying longer and longer. About the time I realized one day he’d been inside for over 24 hours and showed no desire to leave, it became clear he’d moved in with us. This was about 2 years ago, and he’s been here ever since (except for a four-day walkabout in May that scared us). Vets estimate he’s about 8. Allie is not thrilled to have a little brother.
I am positive that you are making up stories, those adorable kitties couldn’t possibly be up to anything bad!
Oliver is a super lucky kittah and Jax looks fairly well spoiled as well.
Audio-books are your friend.
I’m fairly sure you are making things up as well! (It is a little hard to maintain that stance while looking at crazy-eyed cat…)
Annie is also adorable.
I hope you start feeling better soon.
That’s good to hear. I was halfway sure that you were going to sit up all night because it was too quiet to sleep. I hope FCD starts sleeping better as well.
There was snow on the ground when I got up this morning, but it is bright and sunny now. I put some peanuts on a white plate and put it outside the dining room window for the fuzzbutt’s entertainment.
There is a very fat squirrel who lives across the gulch, when he sees the plate on the grass, he comes running over for a snack. The stinkin’ crows got spoiled by that one time I put the cashews out and snub the peanuts until they see the squirrel eating them, then they want them too.
I was planning on taking my secret santa package to the post office on the way to the gym, but walked out without it. I don’t want to do it on the way to the vet, so I guess I should get up off my ever growing butt and deal with it now.
ETA: That’s a great pic of Buddy and Allie that you snuck in, nette.
My ankle is feeling better although it still has a lot of healing to do. Had a light massage yesterday which helped. And felt good. Today, I’m watching the Brad Pitt George Clooney movie on Apple TV with my friend. We are going to have popcorn and cookies for lunch while watching.
The usual bouncing around, made worse by 9 callouts just on the 100. Plus I get to stack all the Charlotte Amazon stuff that keeps winding up in the building. Damn you, ruble, Ghost Of Christmas Past Participle! < shakes fist >
I never get jobs like that. But then I’m not likely to be cornered at the party by Greek tehnophbe guy lecturing me about the Antikythera mechanism.
Congrats on the insane scale, sticky!
Around gere, “Juan” is a common name for staffers at the Japanese restaurants.
Heh. We don’t know the owner’s name - he works right behind the sushi bar and he’s there constantly. We call him “Hancho-san” to ourselves. The head waiter, I’m pretty sure, is his son. We call the waiter “Toshiro” between ourselves, because he has a deep voice and an abrupt and commanding way of speaking. I wouldn’t be surprised if Toshiro inherits the business when Hancho-san retires. I hope so. It’s my favorite restaurant in all of San Jose.
A whopping 1F this morning and it’s now -8F, which is not an improvement. And a prediction of two inches of fluff on Saturday, but at least warmer.
Big outing last night with others from the Society of Decay and Decrepitude. A fancy steak joint, which I don’t normally care for. Jam-packed with customers, which is odd for a Wednesday. Afterward, an overly long drive around the lakes to look at Christmas lights. By the time it was over, I was chilled to the bone and my hips/back were killing me. A hot shower and two Aleve and that was me for the night.
Today is our in-house arts and crafts show. The wife and I trundled a bunch of my woodworking efforts downstairs for show. It kicks off in about 20 minutes.
Busy morning. I packed 4 bags of assorted clothes plus a box of shoes, threw out a lot of trash, tucked away some figurines for FCD to consider later, swapped bedroom lamps, made ice, ran the dishwasher, and went to the convenience center. Currently in Arby’s having a French dip with au jus before ordering a pie with a la mode. Yes, I hate when menus say “served with au jus” eeeeeesh!
Next stop is the credit union, then Food Lion, then post office, then CVS. Then home. So it’s time to top off my diet coke and move on…
I was sitting on the couch at my workstation earlier, when I heard an alarm going off. I thought it might be Mrs. L.A.'s alarm clock, but I knew that couldn’t be it. The alarm was the coffee maker. I tried resetting it, turning the power off and on, etc., but it still beeped.
After a couple of decades of using Mr. Coffee machines, we decided that Mr. Coffee’s quality had plummeted. Fed up, in August 2023 I ordered a Ninja. It’s been a good pot. But it only lasted 16 months. I called Product Support, and the rep tried to help me get it to work. He initiated a video connection so he could see what’s happening. He suggested running a cleaning cycle, so I got out the white vinegar. Nothing happened. The coffee maker is dead.
Of course it’s beyond the one-year warranty, but they’ll be sending a new unit as soon as I get the failed unit to FedEx to send it back to them. As it happens, we’re out of coffee. (24 pounds of Community Coffee is scheduled to arrive in the next few hours.) In the meantime awaiting the new Ninja, we have an old electric percolator, the Keurig machine, a couple of French presses, and a couple/few moka pots. Oh, and I boiled some water and poured it in stages through the Ninja’s coffee filter, so we’ve got some coffee for the rest of the morning – even if the warming element doesn’t work. That’s what microwave ovens are for.
Nice of Ninja to replace the machine out of warranty. It would be better if it hadn’t failed so soon though.
Home at last - erranding done for today. Not sure what I’ll attack next - I’ve got a smart light bulb that I may set up in the now-guest room.
Still waiting to hear from the medical supply company to come get the bed and the rest of the stuff. I suppose I can start laundering all the sheets that I’ve been flinging down the stairs for the last 3 days. That’s a fairly easy chore, except for having to go up and down the stairs multiple times Oh, what a difficult life I have!!! < dramatic pose of woe >
Good business move. I had that happen years ago when my Breville convection/toaster oven conked out. Called the company to see if there was a local repair place and they told me that for (I think) $50, they would pay to ship the unit to them. If they couldn’t fix it, they would replace it for free. So I sent it off and it got stolen in shipment. Contacted the company and the guy says “Well, you shouldn’t have to be in the middle of this problem, so we’ll send you a new unit on us.” Customer for life.
I put a post on Next Door and tomorrow, I’m meeting someone who’s a caregiver for a 90+ patient - she’ll be getting the diapers and whatever brand of “depends” I’ve got. So huzzah!! I didn’t want to throw them away.
FCD came up with a solution to one issue - MIL did a lot of cross-stitch with country themes - definitely not to my taste or decor. But there were 2 women from the church here who were about as close to being friends as she had here, so he wants to give each of them one of her pictures. So yay! I’m sure they’ll enjoy them and I don’t have to feel guilty about shoving them in a closet because I woudln’t hang them on the walls at all.
OK - Guess I should head down to the laundry room.
I had a dream the night before last. The scene is a sandy beach with breakers, similar to Santa Monica or Venice. A young girl caught a sea creature in the surf. It was about three feet long, and somewhat eel-shaped; only cylindrical, about four inches in diameter. It had a cute, friendly, almost anime-style face. The sea creature acted like a friendly puppy, and was happy for the attention. There there was a time jump. The girl rode the now much-larger creature out into the open ocean. There, there were thousands more creatures. The one the girl had found made some communication, and all of the creatures headed toward the crowded (but unseen in the dream) beach. They were singing. Now at the beach, beachgoers saw them coming. Someone wondered what they were singing.
♫ We’re going to eat you! We’re going to eat you! … ♫
So I was worrying about the wrong housemate. Jolene is just fat, her belly felt funny because the fat grew in a horseshoe shape around her very long scar.
Hubs is scheduled for heart catheterization Monday morning. Last time this happened, he ended up having a quad by-pass.
