Old Mrs. Amazon, in her Amazon Logistics avatar, lost a box with 20 copies of one of my books. Oops. They can only be delivered by Amazon because they’re print on demand, and we have horizontal rain falling (sic) here so the front porch is no protection for a box of books, and they can’t give me tracking information so I have no idea when to be home (or even if they’ll be able to find and deliver the box).
It was a nice, in the 70s, day today.
I went to the dog park this morning and it was fun. Coco and her dad showed up and it was nice to see them again. Echo growled at Coco like she wanted to rip her apart, and Coco ignored her and they got along fine. I think Echo wanted to play.
The group got a lot of running in, wore their little hineys out. There’s a guy who comes and goes on the small side because his dogs don’t like other dogs, but they do love to run the fence.
I’m sorry about {{{Nelson’s auntie, Red}}}
I got a bunch of paper sorting done today, in between naps. I think I need to buy a shredder, there is so much stuff I need to get rid of
Tobias and his gf look so cute.
When my son was in pre-school and kindergarten, a girl in his class took a liking to him. As soon as he walked into the class she would jump up, grab his hand, and tell him, YOU ARE SITTING NEXT TO ME!
Her tone made it very clear that he had no say in the matter. From the grin on his face, I think he didn’t mind at all.
The box elder bugs are coming out, I hate them.
Congrats to 'im indoors, BooFae
I can’t get into a lot jazz because I hate horns, especially trumpets. It actually hurts.
Hooray! I got to Tacoma, and the laptop diagnosis is…dust in the ports. I didn’t know you could GET dust in the ports! So they cleaned it, and it was free! I started walking home from the Olympia bus station and WHOOSH, a cloudburst. I waited it out under an awning, but a few minutes after I started out again, MORE heavy rain. I didn’t care any more when I saw this.
Nice try, Bub. You were born great.
I guess it was when I was 16 and working on an assembly line. (Long story.) One day my supervisor pulled me aside and said, “We need to do quality control. Figure somethin’ out, wouldja?” Why me, I have no idea. I had no background in statistics, and the only things I knew about efficiency came from reading Cheaper by the Dozen. Somehow I got a system figured out, and it worked. Like cookie, I eventually ended up supervising the section. (All the workers were teens or developmentally disabled adults.)
I like you anyway.
BooFae, congrats to 'im indoors! (Or is the proper form of address, Mr. 'Im Indoors?
Too clever!
But it would be a cat capable of superior cognition because we’re all real good at cognitazing riiiiight? Why I alone cognitate as many as three, four minutes a day! I can’t help it. It just comes natural to me.
Wow, good for you! If I had a freezer bigger than a glove compartment, I’d ask how you learned how to do that.
I like your Braunschweiger runs, but they do sound to me like a bunch of Swiss men running a 5K in leiderhosen , suspenders, and those little hats with feathers in them. Why Swiss, I don’t know. It;s a German words. Maybe it’s Germans dressed like old school Swiss.
See? That right there is one cognitating cat, I tell you.
FCM, that photo is just too cute!
I don’t know what this is, but I’m dying to use it in a sentence.
Good evening all. Been a fairly active day for me, did the usual shopping and sammich Moanday morning run and then went to the pool early since I had signed up to referee a soccer game at 5pm. Got my 1.5 miles in and then had about an hour to rest before heading off to the soccer fields. I was an Assistant Ref (one of those who patrol the sidelines) and got some fresh air and a little running in, then Got a Whopper and fries at the King’s place. Came home and changed to go back to the gym (I may be spending too much time there, but it beats housework), but stopped to add a bit of gas on the way…
And when I pulled into the station and stopped the car, the car alarm started blaring…and I could not find my keys! I know they had to be in the car, it won’t start without them but they were not in my pockets and I couldn’t find them in the car seat. Finally re-started the car and once I put it in gear the alarm stopped sounding. Went home for my spare keys and then back to the station, no problems. It was a mystery until I got to the gym…and found I had put the keys in my gym shorts, which I wear under my blue jeans when I go to the gym to save a little time changing. Must have moved somehow to press the alarm button on the key fob, but at least I know how I fouled up. Anyway, got gas and did the requisite sweating…and the lying ()^&%&^ of a gym scale said I gained 0.8lbs this past week, after all the exercising and calorie counting I did! So a little grumpy this evening (but not much–usually after losing several pounds I put a little back on (from sneaking those extra snacks, I guess…)
Anyway, my exciting day is nearly over, so let’s catch up with the 30+ messages since this morning.
FCM, sounds like a great idea for MIL; I know a lot of nursing homes have animals that live there or have them come visit the patients. hope it works for you. Love the hand-holders. Hope the meatloaf was tasty.
flyboy, enjoy the vacation…and that is a great deal, AirBnB?
Oopsie, hope the new door meets your expectations; pictures please once it is installed. And haven’t been to Subway in quite awhile, I am a Jersey Mike’s loyalist.
VanGo, you are more patient than I, about an hour would be my limit.
doggio, thanks for the definitions you provided shoe. I can get about 75% of what you’re saying and just roll with the rest.
Cookie, twas’ noble of you to come to the director’s assistance, even if it generated some bad feelings.
shoe, I finally figured out yeeting about 6 months ago, but other modern terms may still baffle me.
Sticky Buns, hope you brought something to read while waiting.
You can do that? I never considered it. and since I have a 25" monitor about 18" away, not sure I’d improve my viewing any.
red, some extra scritches from Nelson on his loss.
JtC, quite a story, and confirms yet again that you are one of the good people. And you protected that kid to the best of your ability; I only hope that idiot Mom got some help. And I don’t remember ever seeing a flying squirrel; that’s a wonderful picture you paint.
As Louis Armstrong (the immortal Satchmo) said: If you have to ask what jazz is, you’ll never know
Sari, glad you and the pups made it to the park, and more importantly, that you were apparently able to enjoy it.
nellie, glad it was just dust in the wind… And what a lovely present Mom nature gave you!
Nobody:
Spot: “IT IS THE RED HOUR!”
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave, and leave the fuzzy maniac to his own devices.
As per above, a “pig” is a 20 foot box truck. the supply pig is where we keep the plastic pallets and Gaylord open top boxes for Surepost loads.
And cool pic!
Well, they “delivered” my bag of socks and $10 phone case to the office(which is at the other complex), and that “dogbutler” signed for. So it’s one of those weeks.
Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 10c/50f with a predicted high of 15c/59f and mostly cloudy. Weather app says “All of the clouds throw fucking shade, but not as much as your stupid fucking ex.” OK, seems fair to me!
Have a fabulous break! I’m glad the kittehs have accepted the catsitter’s ministrations - our catsitter is a lovely lady who always manages to charm the cats out of hiding.
That’s very naughty of him, did he know you were going to be there? I hope you get paid for those hours…at least you got to do important stuff for yourself instead.
No, I don’t think he’s part of that generation and he isn’t quite the spoilt little prince type, he’s just desperate to finish his degree here. We get a lot of students from that part of the world because their parents place more value on a degree from a “traditional” university so they get sent to the UK to attend one of the old redbrick types. What’s holding him up now is the visa process, but he’s adamant he could keep up with study because he’s already got access to the virtual learning site. It’s a complicated process, but the academic decision is that he’s too late to catch up with teaching as we’re into week 4 now, he’s quite convinced he can do it. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he turned up anyway, and expected us to accept him on the course because he’s physically there.
I am so sorry to hear that Sounds like she had a good life and the best kind of passing.
Yay! It’s always good to get a simple diagnosis and a free fix!
He might get upgraded to Mr 'Im Indoors now that he’s no longer one of the Great Unwashed
Yesterday evening was uneventful after I logged off work, did feline tums and bums, hauled teh biiiiiig bin out to the kerb (JtC don’t forget your bins!), then made some chilli for dinner and watched a couple of episodes of Dexter before bed. I had a reasonable night’s sleep in the end, and was awake just before 7am. Got up to tend to the mogs, made some breakfast and had a cuppa in peace before logging into work.
The binmen came round at 7.30am, it’s normal rubbish collection today so they don’t bother looking in the bins. I went out to haul the biiiiiig bin back to where it lives and will move my car out onto the street in a while when it’s a bit quieter out there. Our street is a rat-run between a couple of main roads so we get a lot of traffic in the school and work runs.
I need to go out at lunchtime to get some cat litter, the pet store is on a small retail park and it’s much easier to park during the week when there are fewer people around, on Saturdays it’s absolutely packed so today would be a good day to get some supplies in. After irk, I need to do campus food for the rest of the week, and then we’re going grocery shopping. 'im indoors is in charge of dinner tonight so at least I won’t have to do anything when I get back from shopping. I can continue working my way through The Five.
I had a few of those students in my day. I felt for them when the visa gum-up wasn’t their doing, and I sympathized with their argument that they had done the work on their own or online, but after some amount of time, they had missed too much discussion, too many group assignments, and too many interactions with guest speakers, plus I couldn’t confirm that they were doing their own work. For self-paced, all-online classes, I was able to flex.
I’m up after a very short night. I ended up sleeping on the first floor in a recliner because I was hurting too much and kind of wobbly so I didn’t want to attempt the stairs. I’m just waiting a few minutes until I hear MusicMan’s alarm go off upstairs and then I’ll be taking him back to his truck this morning. Then I’ll most likely be playing with the clay I bought yesterday in between virtual appointments.
It’s just before 6 of the AM as I write this. I’ve been up since about 2:30 of the AM - FCD had a bad dream and decided to go sit in the living room. I heard him up and about and I was afraid something was going on with his mother, so I got up to see. And I couldn’t fall back to sleep, dammit. And just a few minutes ago I had a scare - MIL was in the bathroom and her bedroom lights were on. I was afraid she was getting up. Thankfully she went back to bed, so I can have my morning quiet time. Whew!
As I lay in bed trying to get tired again, I decided to check our VISA account to see if the payment had gone thru yet. Almost had a heart attack - apparently something was wonky in the app and it switched “Balance” with “Credit Available”!!! When I just checked on my 'puter, everything was on order, so Whew again! Had someone gotten our number and run up that many charges, my phone would have been dinging out of control (I get notified any time a charge over $20 is made.) That’s two early morning heart attacks. Dare I fear a third??
Also as I lay abed, I was thinking of something I wanted to post. I’ve forgotten what it was. Stoopit brain. Another stroke of literary genius lost to the ages. But on the happy side, the shoulder stretches are really making a difference. My arm strength is still crap, but I can reach farther without pain.
I wish I could find my old TENS unit, but maybe I should break down and get a new one. Anyone here use one they’d recommend (or not, as the case may be?) I tried looking for a non-retail site that reviews stuff, but there aren’t a whole lot of people out there reviewing TENS - go figure!! On one site, the #1 unit was missing from the list - there was a blank, followed by #2 - weird.
Something Daughter was telling me over lunch the other day - one of Tobais’ classmates has two mommies. Amazingly, he’s neither scandalized nor totally perverted by this situation - go figure! But (and I don’t recall the exact conversation) he thinks it would be absolutely hilariously wrong to have THREE mommies! Daughter said he cracked up at the idea!
Which then got me to thinking about my niece’s husband who is certain that if either of their sons wore pink or purple, they’d immediately start flaming… Is that a symptom of toxic masculinity, or just stupidity? Seriously, who under 40 sill thinks that way? Well, obviously he does.
And here’s something to look forward to - only 2 weeks to the election, so just 2 more weeks of idiotic political ads. Then we’ll get a week off and the campaigning for 2028 will begin. We don’t get many of the Presidential ads, but boy are we seeing negative ads for a few congressional and senate races. So, yeah, I’m looking forward to the end of all of them.
Oh, and my big yarn order is coming tomorrow! So I need to pick out some patterns. I have 2 crocheted blankets picked out - I just need to adjust their sizes from big afghans to smaller lap blankets. Same with a couple of knitted ones. I figure I should be able to do 8 more with the yarn I have and the yarn I’m getting. And at least one of them will be made up of all the scraps that I’ve rolled into little yarn balls. I think I should start joining them into one big ball of random colors.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 56 Amurrkin out and mostly clear with a predicted high of 83 and N.O.S. Today will be a day of high RDOS inactivities. I have peopled enough for the last two days and need to be a hermit. Nappage, day drinkin’, and back porch sittin’ shall rule the day. Sup will be grilled poke chops, peas ‘n carrots, wild rice, and rolls. Borin’, but it’ll eat.
It’s 45 degrees and cloudy outside. Today, there will be a mixture of clouds and sun and a high temperature of 59 degrees. I might have to break down soon and turn on the heat. I came home yesterday (it was admittedly soggy and cool), and my husband had the fireplace going.
I had to drag the garbage bin down the driveway to the curb at 3:30 this morning because my husband forgot to do it last night. It’s amazing how many of us here have Tuesday as garbage day.
Yesterday was an in-office day. I got some stuff done, but not as much as I’d like. I also put in a leave request (actually burning some comp time) for this Thursday. My boss approved it pretty quickly. I submitted the leave request before my calendar started filling up for that day.
red, I’m sorry about pup.
Nellie, I’m glad the computer fix was simple and free!
Congrats to 'im indoors, Boofae!
Yay for nice little breaks on the coast, Flyboy!
I can’t really think of a time I was called to greatness. I guess the closest I can remember was when I was a teenager. We were staying at a hotel on the coast, and I and many other people were in the swimming pool having fun, as you do. Eventually, I became aware of frantic splashing behind me and strange gurgling noises. I whipped around and a toddler had fallen into the pool on the deep end and was in the process of drowning, I scooped that little boy right up and got him out of the pool and onto the pool deck. Fortunately, he was still conscious and managed to cough up the water. By the time he was coughing water up all over the deck, his parents were there. They thanked me, and I never saw them or the little boy again.
Besides, it’s just the average coming in behind people and cleaning up messes, much as FCM mentioned upthread.
The rest of the work week promises to be busy, so it’s business as usual. I would love to have a couple of slow days.
Lily, I hope your books arrived or will arrive in good condition.
This past summer, Tobias decided to jump in (fortunately not in the deep end) before my daughter put his swim jacket on. Luckily, there was another mom close enough to grab him and put him back on dry land. Before next summer, he and his sister will have swim lessons. Anyway, something tells me this happens a lot - kids and water…
I had to follow my cold Diet Coke with a mug of hot tea. I expect I’ll slosh when I finally stand up to walk. Which I now need to do now after drinking all that.
Garbage day here is Monday and Thursday.
Thats when the truck comes to empty the bins in the back of the building.
Theres 2, and they’re always piled high.
Happy 2sDay all. Up for the 5am micturition and then dozed until about 7am. Loaded up two 30-gallon bags of clothing and stuff for Purple Heart and put it in the driveway with a sign, so that duty has been accomplished. Will finish off my last braunschweiger roll today (since it is the last use-by date on the wrapper–waste not, want not) and get to the gym as usual, but nothing much on the agenda. 42F heading to 81F later on during the day and my heating and AC units are getting a nice long break (as are my gas and electric bills).
boo fae, I guess out of luck student can wait a semester and try to take it then? And The Five looks like and interesting read, may have to look for it.
{{Sticky Buns}}; hope the hurting isn’t so bad today.
FCM, haven’t had my VISA do that to me, sometimes they leave charges I’ve made ‘pending’ for 2-3 days, but otherwise they seem to work fine. Had to look up a TENS unit, it’s for pain relief, right?
More than you think, FCM; more than you think. And like you, I am at the election-stage of 'let me vote and get this over with". So many other nations can do it in a time-frame measuring in weeks, not month and years, but we can’t/won’t change.
Taters, that was a pretty great thing and worth remembering.
And the morning apple (Cosmic Crisp) has been taken down to the core and it’s time for some more morning internettin’. Have a good day all.
When my evaluation came up, she gave me the draft to read. She recommended no merit increase and also said some unfair things. I took her to task by writing a scathing rebuttal, and then we had a verbal showdown where I firmly told her that I was not her former friend and that I had my own (and as effective) way of doing things. After tempers cooled, she rewrote the evaluation and we eventually became pretty good friends. She recommended me to fill her position.

It’s another lovely autumn day 10 miles west of the White House! Currently 70° and sunny, with an expected high of 81. Windows are open: happily, the new construction’s road work/digging wrapped up yesterday and it’s much quieter today (there’s just some muffled hammering, which I don’t mind at all). It means things are more boring for the dog, but life is hard.
Home Depot acted quickly: someone called while I was at the gym yesterday, and left a message saying that he’ll be in my area today and will stop by at some point to measure for the new storm door. Yay! I don’t have to be home/interact with him, but as long as he doesn’t get here between 1:30-2:30 – when I’ll be facilitating a training session, and will have the front door closed – I’ll chat with him. I’m hoping that I won’t need to order a custom/nonstandard size, which will both cost more and take longer to get.
12:30 UPDATE/EDIT: The guy was just here: the door is a standard size! Yay! He said someone from Home Depot will call me in 1-2 days, and I can order something.
This evening I have a work dinner: my boss (the program manager) lives in SC but is here for the week, so he and some of his direct reports are going out. We have a big in-person meeting on Thursday, but we don’t get to socialize with each other very often; it’ll be good to see the others. And, happily, the boss picked a restaurant that’s less than 2 miles from my house (I live in a popular/central area).
I know you were hoping he could be seen early, but to me an appointment running 17 minutes late is really not bad at all!
Aww, sorry about Nelson’s aunt. But yeah: as much as I dread discovering a dead Bailey (it always freaks me out when she’s sleeping really deeply and I can barely see her breathing), I honestly hope that’s the way she goes when the time comes. No suffering, no horrific decision for me to make, etc.
That’s OK. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
You owe me a new keyboard.
The “nude” one might actually be my favorite, because the hands are smaller and at first glance they could be mistaken for leaves…
Wow!!
My previous car’s key fob had an alarm button that was ridiculously easy to accidentally hit if the keys were in my pocket. It was super annoying. To the point where I once asked a dealership whether it was possible to disable just that button (the service manager said no, but he was intrigued by the idea and actually spent some time looking into it).
I’m a Jimmy John’s fan, myself, but the sandwiches from all of those places have too much bread for me these days. Last night I had the other half of the Subway chicken & cheese sidekick for dinner, and I’m about to decide between double cheese and pepperoni & cheese for lunch…I’m leaning toward the latter, but it’ll be a coin toss until I actually nuke one of 'em.
Thirded!
Oooo, I’d never heard of them! I’ll have to compare their offerings to Airbnb the next time I’m looking to rent a place vs a hotel room. I haven’t used Vrbo yet, either.
Walked 20-some blocks today. When I got back, our lone working elevator was being used to move someone into the building! WTF? I didn’t really feel like hiking up the stairs after the walk, so hitched a ride with the movers. I’m thinking my trip to the grocery is going to have to wait until tomorrow.
