I know you have a lovely wife; you mention them frequently. Who I had always assumed was female. And with your screen name of susan I’d assumed you too were female. As well a bunch of your posting style “feels” female to me.
But the mixed signals are suddenly asploding my head here.
You’re of course under no obligation to dispel my confusion, but right now I am confused about all things gendery in the susan household.
PSE?
I now understand what as Oort jar is. I don’t understand why it’s called that. Help? ETA: as metalmouse also asked.
Super congrats!! Here’s hoping this one is more real than the last few.
Yaay!! And congrats on having a useless noggin! It’s funny how satisfying winning at trivia is.
When you mentioned a couple days ago about MIL being wiped out walking to the mailbox that brought back a lot of memories. I predict she’s not going to be up for going out today either. {{Hugs}}
It will be fun to see your Mom.
As to me …
It’s now after 9am and I’ve been up a couple hours and caffinated. Got one of my admin problems solved and was waiting until after 9am to tackle the next one. Then exercise, shevelment, and food are next up.
Today is roughly the 4-week anniversary of the day I took the last of my stuff out of my old place and said goodbye to HL. In one sense it feels an eternity ago, and in another it seems pretty recent. I’ve definitely done more living in those 4 weeks than I had in the previous ~20 months.
I’m now impatient to get the divorce job a) moving forward, and b) done.
Congratulations, coppertone! Fingers crossed that this is a good long-term job for you.
It is crazy warm here. It’s supposed to be around 85F, which is pretty unusual, even in the Midwest. Of course, it’s going to drop more than 40 degrees tomorrow and the high will be 40F. Go figure.
They laid off more people last week than I realized, most of them in a friend’s area (friend also got laid off), which sucks. At this point, it feels like they don’t have room to keep cutting people, yet they seem to think otherwise. I guess that’s how corporations work. And then by the end of the year, they’ll realize they fired too many people and start hiring again next year. Of course, they cut them just before bonuses are announced, probably to avoid payouts. Lovely.
I’m doing the grownup thing now and scheduling doctor’s appointments that I’ve been avoiding. I love going to the doctor only to be asked, “Have you thought about losing a little weight?” Hmmm, no - that never occurred to me, not ever. Sadly my GP has moved on to concierge medicine. I loved her and would love to follow her, but I hardly have the cash to toss around to do so. Bummer. Oh, well. If that’s the worst of my problems today, I’m doing alright.
Thanks, Jane! And I would love to explore Portland; I’ve been there a couple times before and enjoyed it.
But these are both scheduled as one-week jobs, which usually means they’ll consist mostly of working and sleeping. I’m hoping to squeeze a Spring Training game into the Arizona trip, but I’m not sure it will work out. We shall see.
Gah, I hate this. Yes, I am aware I’m overweight. Yes, I am aware that can lead to various health issues. But are doctors legally forbidden to even attempt to diagnose anything beyond “it’s because you’re fat”?
I had a long-term doctor in Illinois that I really liked, but never really meshed with one during my 10 years in San Francisco. I have an appointment with a new GP next month. He’s relatively young and has very good reviews. I’m hopeful he’ll be a good fit.
Oldest son sent a live YouTube link for the all-bands concert at their local school last night. I have three grandkids who play instruments, but only spotted two of them. Turns out that the French horn player, who is in 6th grade, was wedged between two seniors. They did a really good job, both individual grades and the combined “megaband” (some 300 players) at the end. Lots of complicated percussion. I noted that they don’t teach the drummers the classic over/under grip on the drumsticks. Anybody know why that is?
And a good late morning to you all. Nearing 70F already outside and the clouds are giving way to sunshine, so may have to get out and enjoy the weather some. Getting a debit card took all of about 7-8 minutes, the lady at the bank typed in my information, we set up a Pin Number, and now I have a bright green debit card. This 21st century is a neat place!
Also I now have something to put in my mouth anytime I want too…ok, now that you’ve had your bad thoughts for the day, I got my Root Beer Dums Dums and they are readily available on my counter. Only bad thing for the calorie counter I’ve become lately is that there are 50 calories per item, so will have to ration them…and that may be difficult. We’ll see how it goes.
talkie, some corporations are penny-wise and pound-foolish, as the old saying goes. Hope it doesn’t impact your job. And good luck with the Drs. appointments.
I hope it goes well! I’m searching for an osteopathic doctor because that was where I had the absolute best experience.
In other news, I’m on a call and my boss’s boss just said they were “Going to circle up and ideate ASAP, but let’s not get into solutioning or discussioning here.” I barfed a little from the corporate buzzwords.
I hope you have a nice visit. Try to get some relaxing in as well!
The worse part is that I laugh at him when he yells at the computer and that doesn’t seem to help his mood at all. Have you got your hubs VR system fixed now? Maybe the two of us can have ungrumpy husbands for a while
Ohhhh, so close. The Oort Cloud is made up of the leftover bits and pieces from the creation of the solar system. A needleworker’s Oort jar holds the leftover bits and pieces from the creation of his or her latest masterpiece.
Hehehehe.
It was a work song. Public Services Evaluator. (I worked for the government, Food Stamp Worker is far to easy to understand.)
I sure hope it works out for you, the weather is perfect for it. Keep my offer in mind for if you get sent for a two week job
I am SO happy I’m retired.
Currently, hubs is having his first acupuncture session, paid for by the VA and your tax dollars. Once he’s back, we will head down the mountain to get his comp. I had a hair appointment at three today, but I don’t think we will be back in time, so I changed it to tomorrow.
Have a great day, I’ll catch up with you all later.
The decision on the paint has been made. The Norway spruce and kitty grey have won. Some are very unhappy… ah well we can revisit in a few years.
The old mattress has been removed! There was a bit of a delay as I had to get a mattress bag or a huge amount of cling film. Turns out the local hardware store has the bags. I was able to get one this morning.
After a day delay, the old mattress is gone, the tv is on the wall, and cleaning and furniture moving has started. I’m considering a lunch break now to fuel up for the rest of the day.
Before I put up the new mattress, I have to decide if I have enough time to repair and paint a wall. The dreaded gatoring from an old leak. That will create a lot of mess which would be a lot easier to do without the mattress around.

Every time I see this thread’s title I think of “Silly Love Songs” – which I love, though many write it off as horrible pop tripe. (If you’re one of 'em, shaddup. )
Right now it’s overcast but 62°F, with an expected high of 63. My storm door has both screens and glass panes: I have the front door open, and the (locked) storm door’s bottom pane up. Partly for air, but mostly to entertain the dog…who, it turns out, would rather snooze.
Work was fairly steady yesterday and this morning, but I’ve finally hit a “caught up for now” point and am enjoying the quiet while it lasts…
After work today I’ll go to the gym for the first time in a week. I’m actually kind of looking forward to it, though last week my trainer said he wanted to do a body composition scan at our next session and I’m not looking forward to that. I’m kind of hoping he’ll forget about it. I’ll be seeing him three times this week – we’re a couple of sessions behind – so he’ll probably remember at some point. Meh.
I’ve decided to be late to this evening’s volunteer-related Zoom meeting so I can go to the store on the way home from the gym and get bananas and Gatorade and tissues (oh my). I don’t have to be on camera or speak during this one, so with luck my tardiness won’t even be noticed.
OMG where were those “lyrics” in the 90s, when this straight girl was practically living in gay bars*!
(*because my then-BFF was gay and not comfortable in straight bars)
Amen to that! I can’t find the exact quote, but some West Wing episode has an exchange where Leo (?) mentions giving money to homeless folks whenever he has change in his pockets and whoever he’s talking to says something like, “Aren’t you afraid they’ll spend it on drugs or alcohol?” To which he replies something like, “I hope they spend it on drugs or alchohol. For most of these folks, it’s not like they’re one hot meal away from turning it around.” That’s pretty much my mindset. I usually don’t have cash on me, but when I do it tends to be $20 bills: if I’m at a light and a pandhandler is next to my car, I’ll usually give them one (folded so they don’t see the denomination until after I roll up the window/drive away). I can afford it, it might make a big difference to them, and I really don’t care what they spend it on.
Awesome!
Even awesomer!
(is too a word!)
Me, too!
Nah…but that’s alright. Our president opened the meeting by talking about a letter Cute Fellow Volunteer is drafting, challenging a state senator on an issue, so I sent him a “Get 'im!” text – I wanted to send a private chat, but the Zoom meeting wasn’t set to allow those. He acknowledged it (emoji response and “hey”), and during the meeting he accepted my LinkedIn invitation and sent a smiley face message, but that’s it. I wasn’t expecting much, though, because we were each busy with the meeting and with personal multitasking.
If he bothers to actually look at my LinkedIn profile, he might figure out that I’m ~10 years older than him…I’m not sure if that will change anything, so I’ll see if the vibe is any different the next time I see him in person (in less than two weeks). I’m not pressed either way: for once, I’m just enjoying the fun parts when they happen and skipping the neuroses in between. Very que sera, sera. I’m guessing it’s because these days I’m too old/too busy for much bullshit, but whatever the reason it’s a nice change!
@missred very similar songs! The iPad wouldn’t let me quote but you know what I’m talking about! Issue on the tissue and the paper towel, loves to hear the rumble of the human bowel!
Was the human pincushion again today. Gave myself the Dupixent injection and the PA injected my knee. Came home to hear Ursala Kitteh urping in the track of the patio door….
None. Gentleman Caller (remember him? I barely did) finally emerged from the woodwork, so home cookin’ was shelved in favor of other activities.
He’s basically going through almost exactly what was happening to me at the shitty BBQ joint. Just sub out “operating room” for “chain restaurant” so the stakes (heh) are bigger.
On that note, I gotta get semi sheveled enough for my own job. Supposed to close with both Carless Co-worker and Old New Guy so I may be running a taxi service tonight.
Computers don’t make things easier, just the opposite. I finally received my onboarding mail. No matter how many times I try to fill out my I.D. info, its not letting me.
Was on the phone making an appointment with the cardiologist (yearly exam). Ursala singing the song of her people as she is wont to do when I am on the phone. Person on the other end asks me “is that your cat.”? Yep. How embarrassing.
Oddly enough, she was up for lunch at Cracker Barrel and a “walk” on the boardwalk in Solomons. That is, FCD walked and pushed her in her wheelchair. And she got to pet a passing puppeh! But when they got back, she crashed and she’s been asleep since. FCD corresponded with her GP, and on Moanday, folks from Hospice will be here to evaluate her.
My mom, on the other hand, is doing lots better. Since she stopped taking the blood thinner, the bleeding in her gut has stopped. She’s doing really well for being 90. And she was excited because her ovens were finally delivered and installed. They’re really nice but not at all intuitive. It’s all touchscreen - no buttons or knobs. But she mostly wants it for baking and I showed her how to turn on Bake and Convection Bake, and she can read the manual for other things. I also showed her where the temp probe plugs in - she had no idea what it was.
On the bummer side, their basement flooded when my sister turned on an outside spigot. It’s one of those non-freeze types and I’m pretty sure it’s got a split. Poor sis was wet-vaccing the carpets and aiming fans and a heater at the wet. Fortunately, when the spigot is off, there’s no flooding, so no panic for a plumber. He’ll be coming on Thursday.
Speaking of plumbing, I too the little constrictor gizzy out of Mom’s shower head and she now has a good flow of water, so much happies there.
Farging bastiges!
HAH! Five hours of driving for a 3 hour visit. Not really relaxing, but I’m home and there’s my recliner…
As for the OP:
Ta-rah-rah-BOOM-dee-ay! We’re off from school today Our teacher passed away We threw her in the bay She scared the fish away They found her yesterday Ta-rah-rah-BOOM-dee-ay! Ta-rah-rah-BOOM-dee-ay!
