(Old) Summers of Childhood Past in the MMP

I suddenly remembered that I was a latch-key kid. Both parents worked, so I always came home to an empty house. Not that I cared in the least. I’d have a snack, hunt down my friends and goof off until mom got home. Unfortunately, that translated into poor study habits. Why my parents always chose to believe me when I said “no homework” is beyond my ken. And they rarely questioned why I never brought any books home. Too tired, I guess.

Day off from PT today, although I’ll still do exercises. Time now for some grub and a cuppa.

100% the same. I did terribly when I first tried college because I had developed no self-discipline for academic work. I did much, much better the second time around when actual employment had taught me discipline and time management.

My first semester GPA in college was .34. Failed everything except ROTC and Engineering Graphics. I was invited not to return.

Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 17c/62f woth no repdcted change and we have rain showers. Weather app says “Rain is fucking annoying. It’s almost as annoying as listening to your fucking coworker chew.”

I am in Dublin today, it was bucketing down when we went for breakfast and bright sunshine when we left the hotel to go to the airport. Currently sitting in the airport lounge with a glass of something fizzy waiting for our flight back to Heathrow. I have a clutch of boarding passes as the guy at check-in printed them off for all our flight but has only tagged the bags as far as London since we will need stuff tonight.

Belated happy birthday, Wheelie, hope you had a good day.

Hope the sickies feel beter soon and the job hunters have good news.

Other than that, I got nuttin’…

That’s the sweetest thing I’ve heard in a long time.

as we were in row homes, the balls did not go into yards. they did go on roofs. every now and again some one would have roof repair, or put up an arial, and throw the balls down. good times.

at night after dinner the adults would bring out the lawn chairs and sit on the pavement there might be drinks and nibbles.

air conditioning stopped most of the sitting, although it does happen these days. mostly on the milder months.

You know it’s going to be a day when you can see the air at 0330(and it’s “only” a Code Orange air alert). Plus heaving way too heavy furniture. I have the opposite of Spot’s zoomies.

: twitches uncontrollably :

Happy Doperversary, red !!! :cake:

Lou or Cary?
but good luck on that. And the jobs.

I wound up skipping my volunteer-related Zoom meeting last night: my committee had nothing to report and I really didn’t feel like listening to everyone else, so I sent a “sorry, can’t make it” email to the President and Secretary. It’s the first monthly meeting that I’ve skipped. I felt remarkable un-guilty about it.

A little while ago I made an appointment to give blood at the end of next week! It’s a Big Deal for me because I haven’t been allowed to donate for nearly my entire adult life: for a long time the Red Cross had a prohibition related to Mad Cow Disease that affected anyone who spent more than a certain amount of time in certain European countries during a certain timeframe, which overlapped with when my family lived in England. But that restriction was lifted at the end of last year, and I’m finally getting around to hitting up a blood drive! It’s kinda weird that I’ll be giving blood for the first time at the age of 51, but better late than never. :drop_of_blood:

I’m going out this evening, and am looking forward to it: instrumental jazz from three totally swingin’ (and very cool) women, at one of my favorite venues. :notes:

Add me to the “d’awwww!” list.

An Account Executive just came down and gave me a grey T-shirt with ‘Data is dope, y’all’ on it. The got it free from a credit company at a credit conference. It looks like someone dropped something acidic on it, because there are a couple of bleached-out dribble spots on it. Doesn’t matter. I’ll wear it for my walks/yard work/etc. where it will just get schweaaaaty.

Good news, everyone! The truck problem seems to be an intermittent misfire on one cylinder, which my mechanic buddy says is not really anything to worry about. If it comes back, we can swap in a new ignition coil. It was really hot yesterday, and the truck went into limp mode.

I’m not sure I’d categorize the fact that your truck may or may not start when you want to drive home from work as “not really anything to worry about.”
Sounds like it’s an easy and inexpensive fix; if it were me, I’d just go ahead and do it now.

Hmm, should probably take the auto advice of someone named wheelz.

Ha! I’m sure I’m less qualified than you imagine. I just don’t like taking chances.

Just a quick afternoon check-in. Been banking and pedaled off some calories at the gym, so my only needs for being out (93F right now) have been met, outside of a trip to the mailbox and the weekly water meter check. Underwear is in the washing machine and will head to the dryer once done, so I will have on clean underwear for my travels…

Have checked in for my flight on-line, think I will drive and park at the airport, it won’t be all that much more than a taxi and since I get in late on Monday I’d just as soon have getting home be my responsibility. Will have phone and laptop with me so I plan to stay connected to the MMP.

I am enjoying all the memories of youth and summer you folks are telling, takes me back quite aways. Thank you.

Niner, keeping my fingers crossed on the job front.

vroom, glad the burrito was OK…knew you were a smart guy. And good idea to detail everything about the apartment.

Well, at least you did better than Bluto Blutarsky’s 0.00…

boo fae, safe journeys.

Oopsie, good on ya for the blood donation. I used to donate but living in the UAE for 4 years stopped that (they were worried about Hepatitis IIRC). Been 20 years so maybe I should see if they need some 70-year old A+.

Flyboy, hey, free shirts are always a good deal.

VanGo, hope the truck behaves, but keep a little money back if you need than coil.

OK, just heard the washer shut off, so need to move the undies to the dryer. Take care all.

Look at you, being all 21st century!!!

I’ve returned the kids to their mom and stopped for some Amish corn on the way home. So supper’s taken care of! I also went to the UPS drop-off at CVS to send some sheets back to Amazon. They came up in my search for Cotton Sheets, but they were polyester. Ick. So back they go. And off I go to find some cotton ones.

Good times!

They’re worth every penny!

Another one bites the dust. The Happy Seafood Place is closed - it was the 7th (?) restaurant to occupy that particular building in Leonardtown. We first went there in the late 90s when it was Perkins. It has since been a couple of seafood places, a couple of pizza places, a Vietnamese place, a Japanese place, and maybe something I’ve forgotten. My unprofessional opinion - it should be a diner, with a variety of comfort foods and good breakfasts. We don’t have any decent breakfast places in Leonardtown.

Howdy Y’all! Laundry got laundered and sloth got slothed. All in all, not a bad day. It’s hawt out, so glad to be inside in the a/c.

My motor brings all the boys to the yard! Sorry. Just could not help myself!

Since the board ate my last post…

Glad you got the truck issue figured out VanGo.

Thanks for the doperversary wishes doggio.

They began moving my area at irk today. They were scheduled to move my end first, then my cow-orker’s, so we planned accordingly. Unfortunately, maintenance changed their minds, so I already had anything that I didn’t immediately moved and cow-orker was irking her morning away. She had to rush things through before they hauled her irk station off.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

We went to a very small town dive bar about half an hour away and met some of my friends from grade school for Tex-Mex and beer. I have been friends with these people for 65 years, since kindergarten. We had a really nice visit. One man had not seen any of these people but me since 6th grade. He and I got together on facebook and met in person a few months ago.

We talked over the old stories, drank some beer and just had a great time.
