(Old) Summers of Childhood Past in the MMP

Happy doperversary, @missred ! :confetti_ball::cake::champagne::clinking_glasses::tada:

And hippie, that dive bar reunion sounds lovely! So glad you all could find each other. Sweet!

My lovely wife managed to crutch to the car and be taken to a fast food place with GF options. For a special post-COVID-emergency treat, we ate inside, not in the broiling sun.

I napped, Spot got cuddle time. I got a Manhattan. Making Redneck stir fry for dinner.[quote=“longhair75, post:80, topic:987147”]
We went to a very small town dive bar about half an hour away

Those are the best kind. I have vague, fond memories of the one absent Mumper Spiderman took me to in Conshocken, PA.

Sounds fun.

Consider this stolen! I went over passive sentences before and explain the advantage is that they are great for fake apologies.

“Your piece of cake was eaten.”

Yours is a great addition.

We never had break / donut trucks, but we had a bookmobile that stopped around the block from us.

I came from a small Mormon family, only five kids in our family. Slackers! Other aunts and uncles had seven or eight, and many of the neighbors had a zillion as well.

Mom was one of six children, and they all decided to have kids when they were young. I was my mom’s four child (with a miscarriage first before my brother came along) and she was 26 when she had me.

There were 34 grandchildren on my mom’s side, and by the time the youngest aunt had her first, there were probably 15 to 20 cousins (including our family) in a span of 10 years. Summer get-togethers were insane.

I didn’t as much outside stuff as the other boys in the neighborhood, even though we were free range kids. I was more of a bookworm, and soaked in facts and trivia from our set of encyclopedia.

I was kinda figuring that if you were a Mumper, you also did dumb stuff when you were younger. In my case, sometimes younger can just mean yesterday.

I knew someone who worked in a nuke silo and suggested that I could show him a great time if only he could sneak me down into one. He tried so hard to make it happen that he got a mercy floozying instead. At this stage of my life, I doubt I’ll ever be able to take one off my bucket list.

That is so very cool! I don’t think I’ve ever heard of one out this way, I might just write a letter to the board and suggest we get them started again. I’d be happy to come out of retirement to drive one around, especially if I could get nellie as my co-pilot.

Ironed sheets felt crisp and showed what a good housekeeper she was. Like I said, they were only for company, LOL!!!

Ah geeze louise! Sneaky tree, cause I know that if the tree guys had noticed a problem, they would have wanted to deal with it right then.

I am so sorry. I know I should always spell abbreviations out first, I was kinda stoned and forgot. Our library was only a mile and a half away and the grocery store that sold donuts was closer than that, but it was always more fun to walk to the trucks. Besides, if they were going to drive all the way to our home, it would be rude to not use their services!

At the time, I didn’t understand how impressive that was. They were teachers above all and if you showed that you were thinking about what they were saying, they would keep showing and telling until the museum folks would come around and make us all leave. They treated me just like they did any of the other students they had in their entourage. I learned so much those three years.

You know the scenes in archeological dig documentaries where you see folks digging in the dirt and finding things? And people carefully cleaning and preparing fossils? And a bunch of people sitting at that table over there picking through tiny pieces of rocks? Yeah, I was one of the rock pickers. I did get promoted to cleaner after a year or so. I never got to go on a dig, I just worked with what they brought back.

You are forgiven, lots of love back!

OUCH! Please be careful, none of us bounce as well as we used to.

I hope you have a great trip! Remember to put your windshield screen up. They help, kinda.

Similarly, you can make anything sound dirty by adding, in a sly voice, ‘You know what I mean?’

Evening all. All packed and ready to go tomorrow, need to set the alarm to make sure I’m up in time but shouldn’t be a problem. Managed to go out to get the mail about 6pm and check the water main, as I did it started thundering and a strong wind went blowing through, so got back indoors before the bad weather started, and still have some storming around and about as we near 10pm. Hopefully it’ll clear up for tomorrow.

JtC, will park in the parking deck at the airport, definitely not on the top level, so that should help. And thanks for the stories on the Leakeys; I was able to stop at Olduvai Gorge once when in Africa (this was long after they had finished their work there) and have always had a great respect for what they accomplished.

suzie, nice to hear wife-unit is doing so well.

hippie, 65 years of friendship…that’s something special.

FCM, they are building restaurants around here like crazy, it’ll be interesting to see which ones survive into next year. Looking forward to trying Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar (that’s what it’s called!) when it opens this month. Around here places that fail usually become Mexican Restaurants.

OK, need to get my portable alarm clock packed (knew that I was going to forget something) and head off to bed. Take care all.

Do any Mumpers like trivia? I am so annoyed at myself. This evening I played a trivia game at a local bar and restaurant, and our team was placed sixth. If we had got one m ore question correct we probably would have been fifth.

I don’t know how we didn’t get the question about vice presidents correctl. There are six vice presidents still living, Name them in chronological order. Our team could only dredge up five names because we didn’t think of the current vice president. I had to really hang my head on that one.

red Happy Doperversary!!! :tada: :champagne:

hippie always fun to connect with friends from our youth. Glad you had a great time with the boys.

Daughter was on the school newspaper at MSU. I sent this to her friend that was the Editor and her response was “It’s the best grammar rule I know!”

Bon Voyage! Looking forward to vacationing vicariously.

Hubs picked more veggies from the garden and we had them for dinner: 2 yellow squash and about a dozen pea pods. I made Blueberry Peach Streusel Bars for dessert. Yum. Only thing missing is that I should have bought some 'nilla ice cream to go with.

I’m a fan of the Leakeys. As a child, I read a book that included some of Lady Woolley’s work as well, including before and after photos of her reconstruction of a headdress, which impressed me greatly as a 7-year-old.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. I pulled out a frozen chicken breast out to defrost, and dropped it on my food. Considering how cold things are supposed to reduce pain and swelling, my toes still hurt.

So the world could have ended with a bang, and not a whimper?

To be fair, the role of a current VP is to be invisible, unless the President gets shot or impeached.

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 20c/68f with a predicted high of 24c/74f and cloudy. Weather app says “People who like this weather don’t know things. I am one of those people, I don’t fucking know things.”

Yesterday I was posting from Dublin, today it’s London. We checked out of our hotel and tubed to the airport. We had an email last night telling us that our flight was delayed by 2hrs so we got a bit of a lie-in. We dropped our luggage and got new boarding passes for today’s flights, then went to the American Airlines lounge for breakfast - champagne, tea and Eggs Benedict :grinning: then we went next door to the Cathay Pacific lounge because it’s my favourite. We should be in the air by 12.30pm and travelling back in time. We’re due to land at JFK mid-afternoon then have a connecting flight to San Francisco at 6pm. Hopefully global entry will get us through immigration quickly, then we just need to hoof it to drop our luggage off again.

There will be plenty of films and a book in my day today! Then by tonight, I will be living in your past instead of your future :grinning::grinning:

I googled this and came across the thing about online recipes that pisses me off - narratives! I don’t give a flying flip about how your great-great-grandmother created this recipe, then etched it on a stone tablet and carried it in the wagon train across country to the little cabin in the woods… SHUT UP AND GIVE ME THE RECIPE!!! Some at least have the decency to include a Jump to Recipe button but sometimes those links are hard to find. Makes one long for the olden days of cookbooks!

Daughter will be attending a late meeting today, so she asked me to feed the grands supper. I think today’s plan will be a visit to the marine museum after lunch, followed by return to their house where we’ll eventually have Domino’s delivered.

Did the song-and-dance with SiriusXM yesterday after I saw our rate was to almost triple. They don’t even bother with a real person any more - they just have you chat with a bot that’s programmed to give the answers you want. It occurs to me too late that I should have tried demanding some free stuff… Oh well. That’s done and off my list.

And I’ve got an embarrassment of 'maters! Seems I pick 6-8 every time I go out there. MIL gladly takes some, but I’ve had to throw some away because they started rotting. I’m so going to miss fresh 'maters when I no longer have them. I tried growing them inside but without luck. But next year, for sure, I won’t plant them so close together. It’s a challenge to pick some of them.

All righty - let’s get the day started! Happy Wednesday!!

Morning all. 85F here already – supposed to hit 108 today. Sheesh.

Finished the big visit with the eye surgeon (those two words together make me shiver). She sez surgery is required, but must wait a few months for some parameter to get into bounds. Not sure which, but she said everything’s improving so that the surgery will carry less risk of retinal tearing if we wait a few more months for improvement. OK by me, as I’m learning to live “on” my non-dominant eye pretty well, and the other one provides enough information that I’ve got good peripheral warnings. Weirdly enough, the bad eye has better actual focus than the “good” one. 20/25 vs 20/30. Formerly my eyes were too far off to use the 20/-- measure, they were 7.5 and 8 diopters respectively (whatever that means).

This evening I’m going to a Texas Hold’em game with my optometrist (seriously) and plan to raise with “free glasses” at least once. I need a temporary set for about 8 weeks, and maybe I can win them free. My luck has to change sometime and maybe this will be it.

So, onward to the day (no sloth for me). Since I’m free to resume strenuous activity, I can get started on a list of tasks around the house. At least I can do stuff until noon or so, but then the heat drives me inside. I threw away my to-do list because someone (cough Mizpullin) kept adding to it. I typed it on the PC then encrypted it with a password. Hah! That’ll show her!

Hope it’s a good week for everyone!

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 75 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 97 and N.O.S. for the day. We shall procure provisions this mornin’ and get what has become our usual fried chikin N.O.L.s from the pubic sto’. The rest of the day is reserved for sloth, quality cee-mint pond time, nappage, day drinkin’ and general overall uselessness. It’s a tough schedule but we shall perservere!

BooFae enjoy your travels into the past. You’ll even spend a part of the day in my present! Then you’ll be in my past. Hope y’all have comfy seats on the plane.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, bother of bothers, I suppose I must needs purtify and don attire acceptable for bein’ amongst the great unwashed. I hope they appreciate all the sacrifice!

Happy Hump Day Y’all!

Holy crap on a cracker - it suddenly got dark and the skies opened!! T-boomers!! Downpour! Cats and dogs living together!!! It’s the soggy end of the world!!!

So much for 50% chance of rain later this afternoon. Gotta love weather-guessers!

I agree 1000% (that extra 0 is not a typo)
ps. I reduced the white sugar to 2T and increased the blueberries to 1-1/3 cups. Hubs loved it; I did too. :yum:

Will walk to work then scurry home as pre-chemo appt at 11:45 and it’s about a 25 minute drive there. Hoping to get to Fitness Center today. Wasn’t able to get there yesterday as I had to do a review of financial statements for a friend who is a treasurer of a non-profit association. Also should mow at least the front as it’s supposed to rain tomorrow. And if not too tired, I’d like to get to the outdoor 50 meter that’s 4 blocks away and get some laps in.

Have a great day getting over the Hump!

Morning all. Preparing to get dressed and head of to my flights (much shorter than boo fae’s travels). Looks like rain on the coast, so may not get much ocean time, but hey, getting away from the routine is a good thing.

Take care all.

Safe travels!! I envy your getaway!!

Enjoy! Rest assured, we are envious.

Yikes. That makes me glad I live in the upper midwest. Woke to an expected thunderstorm this morning and cheered right up. We need this rain desperately. Highs in the 80s are expected. Next week will be solid 90s and that’s bad enough.

Me as well. Blueberries need little sugar as they already have a ton of the stuff naturally. I agree with your modification. I may have to try this as soon as I get in my kitchen.

So, trying to arrange for movers, I checked my bank account. Nope. Can’t afford movers yet. Damn. Now, I need to see if I can find more than a single young person to volunteer to help me as well as discover where the nearest u-haul rental spot is. Due to my back (and now my knee) I can’t be lifting stuff myself. On the bright side, I’m finally anxious to make this happen and get moved. I want my space with my stuff. Off to the bank, then to irk. You all have a good day.
