Mornin’, mornin’.
It’s 56 degrees Fahrenheit and mostly clear outside, but it’s supposed to become cloudy for the day, and our expected high temperature will only be 67 degrees Fahrenheit.
I got to go to summer camp mainly because my mother found programs that sent low-income kids to summer camp. Otherwise, my sister and I would never have been able to go because we were pretty poor.
We went to day camps a couple of times, then overnight Girl Scout camps one or two times, a dude ranch one year (I think a friend of hers paid for us to go that one), and in the last years, a YMCA camp out on the peninsula. I was even a junior counselor there once or twice.
I like the dude ranch and the YMCA camp the best. We got to go to the dude ranch for two weeks, and I had a blast. It was in Eastern Washington, near the Columbia River. We swam, I learned to water ski, I rode horses, we did some back-country overnights via horseback, had a little rodeo, and all the other summer camp stuff. The YMCA camp consisted of canoeing on the bay, sailing in the cove, Polar Bear swims, crafts, campfire sing-alongs, hiking, archery, swimming in the pool, and the list goes on. The Y camps were usually only a week, but I think we had one or two two-week sessions. By the time I was fifteen or sixteen, I was working summer jobs.
I spent a summer in the Youth Conservation Corps, which had a summer camp atmosphere in our free time. It was hard work: busting trails, clearing slash piles, planting trees, building campsites, digging water lines, cleaning up a contractors’ dump, building an amphitheater, etc. To this day, it was the most fun I’ve ever had on a job, despite the hard labor involved.
I should be in the office today, but Maisie’s heat cycle continues, and I must watch her and Buster. We’ve gotten to the point where we let them out separately for potty and feed Maisie in her kennel. Until yesterday, Buster just sniffed at Maisie’s backside, but yesterday, he tried to position himself to mount her. She was having none of it, but still. Unbeknownst to me, my husband left them unattended, and I found her diaper off. I hope and pray nothing happened between the pups. She’s still bleeding, so hopefully, she’s not fertile. I also don’t want to keep them in the kennel for long periods, so I must watch them. My husband wants to sit in front of his computer or play his VR games, and rather than bring them into the den with him, he puts them in the kennel rather than keep an eye on them. It wouldn’t be a big deal to leave them alone outside their kennels if Maisie wasn’t in heat.
Yesterday morning, I went to one of my favorite nurseries and picked up a beautiful plant basket, plus some other plants to put in my raised beds and containers. I dropped those plants off at home and then drove down to Lowes and Home Depot to see what they had. I did find some plants, but not what I was looking for. Maybe I can drive down to the valley the weekend after I return from Blaine and check out a different nursery. It’s very nice, but their prices are kind of high.
Once I got home, I had lunch and then went outside to plant. I got them all in the dirt, and there were quite a lot of them! So that portion of the yard is on its way to its former glory. This will be a recovery year, but I got a start anyway. I need to fill out one or two of my raised beds and find more plants for the patch of garden under the great room window.
Happy Birthday, cookie!
Well, time for another cup of coffee. Take care!
