(Old) Summer camp in the MMP

School is winding down and all across the country, parents are planning to ship their kids off for a week or two for their (parental) peace and quiet and their (kids) enrichment and whatever… I guess. I wouldn’t know - I never went to summer camp.

OK, technically, I did go to boot camp in the summer but it ain’t the same thing.

Did you go to camp? Did you send your kids to camp? Would you go to summer camp from adults? What would an adult summer camp be like? Why am I picturing an orgy? Why am I asking all these questions?

OK, Campers, GO!!!

Happy Moanday!

First! It’s good to be juvenile!

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 67 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 72 with heavy rain beginnin’ sometime this mornin’ and goin’ through tomorrow. We are under a flood watch as well. Fine by me as I have no where I want or need to be today. Thus we shall sloth, nap, and day drink as is our wont. OK, we shall accomplish a few chores, but nuttin’ major. Sup shall be fried salmon patties, peas, smashed N.O.T., and bizkits cause of the desire for com

Never went to summer camp as a kid. There was too much else to do bein’ the little heathens that we were. I’ve been on weekend retreats as an adult. Does that count as camp?

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Moanday Y’all!

I loved going to summer camp as a kid! My Mom took any opportunity she could to get me off the streets and a couple of weeks a year out in the wood suited both of us. Later a man named Ray came to our house and talked to Mom about putting me into the Boy Scouts, which ended up as a major shift in my life. The transition was not perfect and it was a long process, but I soon spent my time camping, hunting and fishing rather than petty crime and juvenile delinquency. I owe quite a bit to Ray and a group of other men who took an interest in me, becoming the positive male role models I needed.

Later, as an adult, I spent some years as a Scout leader myself. Ray continued on and I later worked with him on various committees. I was just one of maybe a hundred kids Ray mentored.

hippie - what a great story! Warms the cockles of my heart, it does.

The reason I never went to camp was $$$. By the time I was old enough, there were 4 of us. My parents couldn’t afford to send one kid to camp, let alone a whole passel of us. But that was pretty true of our whole block - I don’t recall any of the neighborhood kids ever going either, so I didn’t know what I was missing.

FCD and his brothers were sent to Bible camp every summer. He’s never told any stories about it, so I’m guessing it wasn’t an outstanding feature of his childhood.

We sent Daughter to a couple of different YMCA camps - one when we lived in FL, one when we were in VA (tho the camp was in Annapolis.) We even let her take the horse-riding option one time, but she wasn’t interested after that. After college and her first marriage, she and now-ex moved in with us and she went back to the camp in Annapolis as a counselor one summer. She seemed to enjoy it, and just last week, she was talking about when Roxy will be old enough for sleep-over camp there. It’s too far away for day camp.

As for adult summer camp, I don’t see arts-and-crafts or whatever else goes on. I’m thinking cabanas, beverages with little umbrellas, and lots of quiet for chillage and nappage. Plus someone else to do the cooking and cleaning. I guess I just described a resort vacation - go figure!

Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 18c/64f with a predicted high of 19c/65f, and partly cloudy. Weather app says “This weather is fucking awesome. Sort of like the perfect fucking fart.” Well, you’d know better than I, Weather App! It’s cool and dry out there, I have windows open and we have lost the thunderstorm warning from yesterday.

Summer camp was not a thing here when I was a kid, my parents sent us to Sunday School (I bunked off a lot) and they held a week long “holiday camp” at a place on the south coast. We got sent every year, I hated every second of it. Couldn’t wait until I was old enough to say no to the whole thing.

It’s also my last day of peace and quiet today as 'im indoors will be back home this evening. I have a lunchtime meeting to attend, and I need to log off by 4pm to walk up the road to the dental hygienist. Not looking forward to that at all. If I’m done in time, I might be able to go and pick him up from the station. It’s my turn to do dinner tonight so some chicken has been thawing ready to become curry later on, haven’t quite decided on that yet so the curry plan may become something else. Depends how I feel when it gets round to cooking time!

Growing up in Alaska was summer camp. But no, not officially. I went to stay at my brother’s place for a few summers, where my sister-in-law could keep an eye on me (both parents worked). His place was in an undeveloped area and didn’t have running water. I loved it there and had friends there, and even a girlfriend of sorts.

The wife’s niece and her husband are bringing tacos and fixin’s over for my b-day, which is nice of them. I’m making cornmeal pancakes and homemade sausage for breakfast.

Our regular exercise person is supposed to return to us today. She’s been recovering from knee surgery and should get a warm welcome.

Went to see Henry V at the local theater yesterday. Left at intermission, as both of us were having some discomfort with the seating, but it’s good to get out. It’s a good thing I know the story of the invasion of France or I would likely have been lost in the telling. I’d rather that performances were of an updated nature instead of being done in the original Shakespearean language.

Mornin’, mornin’.

It’s 56 degrees Fahrenheit and mostly clear outside, but it’s supposed to become cloudy for the day, and our expected high temperature will only be 67 degrees Fahrenheit.

I got to go to summer camp mainly because my mother found programs that sent low-income kids to summer camp. Otherwise, my sister and I would never have been able to go because we were pretty poor.

We went to day camps a couple of times, then overnight Girl Scout camps one or two times, a dude ranch one year (I think a friend of hers paid for us to go that one), and in the last years, a YMCA camp out on the peninsula. I was even a junior counselor there once or twice.

I like the dude ranch and the YMCA camp the best. We got to go to the dude ranch for two weeks, and I had a blast. It was in Eastern Washington, near the Columbia River. We swam, I learned to water ski, I rode horses, we did some back-country overnights via horseback, had a little rodeo, and all the other summer camp stuff. The YMCA camp consisted of canoeing on the bay, sailing in the cove, Polar Bear swims, crafts, campfire sing-alongs, hiking, archery, swimming in the pool, and the list goes on. The Y camps were usually only a week, but I think we had one or two two-week sessions. By the time I was fifteen or sixteen, I was working summer jobs.

I spent a summer in the Youth Conservation Corps, which had a summer camp atmosphere in our free time. It was hard work: busting trails, clearing slash piles, planting trees, building campsites, digging water lines, cleaning up a contractors’ dump, building an amphitheater, etc. To this day, it was the most fun I’ve ever had on a job, despite the hard labor involved.

I should be in the office today, but Maisie’s heat cycle continues, and I must watch her and Buster. We’ve gotten to the point where we let them out separately for potty and feed Maisie in her kennel. Until yesterday, Buster just sniffed at Maisie’s backside, but yesterday, he tried to position himself to mount her. She was having none of it, but still. Unbeknownst to me, my husband left them unattended, and I found her diaper off. I hope and pray nothing happened between the pups. She’s still bleeding, so hopefully, she’s not fertile. I also don’t want to keep them in the kennel for long periods, so I must watch them. My husband wants to sit in front of his computer or play his VR games, and rather than bring them into the den with him, he puts them in the kennel rather than keep an eye on them. It wouldn’t be a big deal to leave them alone outside their kennels if Maisie wasn’t in heat.

Yesterday morning, I went to one of my favorite nurseries and picked up a beautiful plant basket, plus some other plants to put in my raised beds and containers. I dropped those plants off at home and then drove down to Lowes and Home Depot to see what they had. I did find some plants, but not what I was looking for. Maybe I can drive down to the valley the weekend after I return from Blaine and check out a different nursery. It’s very nice, but their prices are kind of high.

Once I got home, I had lunch and then went outside to plant. I got them all in the dirt, and there were quite a lot of them! So that portion of the yard is on its way to its former glory. This will be a recovery year, but I got a start anyway. I need to fill out one or two of my raised beds and find more plants for the patch of garden under the great room window.

Happy Birthday, cookie!

Well, time for another cup of coffee. Take care!

I was one of those kids whose parents couldn’t wait to send away to camp. Girl Scout camp, Jewish summer camps, day camp, it didn’t matter. I went to camp every summer from kindergarten through eighth grade. The Kidlet also got to go to summer camp, mostly YMCA day camp and Scout camp.

I myself am taking my Scout troop to summer camp in Ohio next month. Plenty of time to practice knot-tying, napping, and reading.

Have fun, y’all!

No summer camp. I would’ve hated to miss out on fun with my friends.

Happy birthday, Cookie!

YMCA summer camp once – the summer after fourth grade, I think – paid for by a family friend. Still have both good and bad memories of it. Closest I’ve come to it as an adult was a couple of weekends under canvas (well, under nylon, I suppose ) at SCA events.

Both of our girls went to Girl Scout camp several times.

Never attended an overnight/week-long summer camp, our family got by but we never had the money for something like that. Did get to go on some YMCA day-camp trips to a local state park, don’t remember any details however.

Well, woke up to rain showers and according to the weather wizards it’s supposed to stay like this today and tomorrow, so soccer practicing doesn’t look to promising. Have a Dr. appointment for a biopsy on that little black spot on my torso in about 2.5 hours, so my usual sammich will be a bit later than usual. Otherwise will try to get my swimming in and dodge raindrops for the day. Will get to 72F at least, cooler than last week.

Taters, Hubs needs a smack on the head, or maybe a relocation of his computer, he should be minding the dogs better.

Hippo Birdies Cookie!!!

Hope the dental stuff isn’t too unpleasant, boo fae.

Inspiring story, hippie, talk about paying it forward…

Stay dry, swampy (wait, that doesn’t go together, does it??)

OK, onward into the week. Have a good one all.

Happy Birthday, cookie!!!

I’m sitting in the waiting room at our local hospital (not the ER part). MusicMan is having some kind of test to see if his gallbladder is operating properly. He’s supposed to be back there for a couple hours. I feel bad for him because he was sooooo nervous. We’ve had several bad experiences at this place. If he does actually need surgery, hopefully they can schedule it for the city to the north of us.

Meanwhile, I’ve got my iPad and some Wi-Fi, so I should be responsible and work. Except I just sort of feel like finding about 20 other things to do! We shall see… I’ve been thinking about applying for another kind of job that I have most of the credentials for that is still kinda, sorta located in my current realm of expertise. Overall, I’m kind of frustrated because it was now over 3 months ago that I applied for disability. Even if the answer is no, it would still be nice to know.

So we started 10 minutes earlier than usual. Of course, the bag load didn’t get there till 5, and they ran 1 SSLAW till the sort was 99.5% done, then they added 1(one) person with an imprinter on the other slide. But there are worse ways to slow things down enough for me to make a little money. Anyways, I had my dry, flavorless bits(with strawberries), so it’s naptime.

Yes. If by “camp” you mean roaming around the woods like feral children, armed with BB guns, knives, and napalm.

That would pair well with the yak screaming. :bison:

Most summer camps don’t include bears.

Do you bite your thumb at us, sir? :stuck_out_tongue:
:partying_face: :birthday: :champagne:HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!:champagne::birthday: :partying_face:

Welcome back!
: tacklehug :

: crosses fingers :

Believe me Metal Mouse, he just didn’t get how much Buster was pestering Maisie. He definitely received a piece of my mind yesterday.

He actually got up at 5:30 this morning to take care of the dogs because didn’t realize I stayed home.

Honestly, I just want a week or off, but both the Deputy and the Director are both out through Wednesday and I’m the designated person.

I’ve already had a minor fire this morning with someone’s travel, but I got it sorted. I’ve told people over and over to never submit travel authorizations on a Friday, because they won’t get approved the travel unit in time and reservations will automatically be cancelled. This guy’s travel is always a PITA.

No bears that I can recall. In general, bears avoid humans whenever possible unless there are open garbage cans, bird feeders, etc.

Good morning MMPers How are you on this fine May morning?
Currently 73* full sol with afternoon high forecast to be 81*

Yes, I went to camp one summer just before going into 7th grade at the Youth Camp that our city ran at a 600+ acre park that the city owns. It was for 2 wks, the parents came up on the mid Sunday. We had to wait in a circle area for the parents to climb up the hill. I sat and sat as other campers went off with their parents, was starting to question whether they were coming and finally there they were; JOY. We went to swim at the beach on weekdays, had riflery, archery, crafts, and other activities but those were the ones that stood out. When I was in college, I worked at that Camp for 2 summers. I loved crafts so much that I chose that as my program area when I was a counselor.

Sent our daughter to a Girl Scout camp when she was about the same age, well maybe a little younger because by the time she was going into 7th grade, she was on a swim team and practicing every weekday with meets on the weekend.

Yes, thank you, I’m about 90% now. Had the rest of the soup for breakfast. Thought and thought about what could have caused the intestinal upset and couldn’t come up with anything yesterday. But this morning as I reached for a bagel, it dawned on me that it likely was the cream cheese that had been in the frig for a looong time. So I had butter on bagel this morning and threw out the cream cheese.

com??? comida?

She sounds like she will be perfect and fit into your family nicely; hope it works out.

I hadn’t eaten inside a McDonald’s in many many years, but I sat down to eat at one the other day and they have quasi-table service now. You order at a kiosk and take a number and they bring your food to you. That felt both delightful and very wrong.

I went to Girl Scout camp every summer from 2nd to 6th grade, I think. I love the different topics we could choose from each year. One year, my group put on Annie and, because I was little, I got to be Molly. My final year, it was actually a trip to Washington DC for 2 weeks. Some of my best memories were those days. I’m not sure how my folks afforded to send my sister and I to camp every summer - we didn’t have much money. But I’m glad that I did.

Never sent my kids, though I looked at a few over the years. It always seemed to come down to money. But I did try to take them out to Dad’s regularly to get them out of the city for a bit.

Because you somehow managed to flip into my brain?

I could get behind that!

Happy birthday, Cookie!!!

Isn’t that always the way it goes? Anything important is wait, wait, wait. If you call them to check on it too soon (in their eyes), they tell you to be patient. If you call after a bit, they tell you, “Didn’t anyone tell you? We determined this months ago.” It sucks!

I made a few steps forward regarding Dad’s stuff today. Paying part of the water bill that hasn’t been paid since February, messaging my sister the info for the calls she’s going to make. I’m trying to remember the baby steps. It’s all tiring. But a little progress is still progress.

CtE wrote a really nice letter to Hubby and I thanking us for all the support while she’s been in school. It touched my heart. I’m going to want to save it. She’s grown so much.

She got her cap and gown, though I haven’t seen it yet. I need to sit down with her to plan out and decorate her mortarboard. And tonight, I’m going to have Hubby her her FAFSA paperwork done. It’s due Wednesday.

I’m taking advantage of having the house to myself to get in a little nappage. Then I’ll get clean and do the same for my bedroom. Or maybe have my friend pick me up to get me or of my brain. We’ll see.

Happy Moanday!

I’m still so :rage: mad at my mother for last night. I need to let go - it’s a lovely day and my Blessed Day Off - but goddamn that woman really pissed me off.

I’ll check back in with y’all later when I’m not in such a foul mood.

Oh, hippo burpday to cookie!

Same, just throw in Spanish language camp. I might still have the T-shirt somewhere.
