(Old) Summer camp in the MMP

Never went to Summer Camp. When my dad was alive the family went camping on occasion (we had a small trailer). Went tent camping with my mom and sometimes sister and a friend.
I did go camping with friend (just a weekend).
In 6th grade we (multiple schools worth of 6th graders) did have a weekend at a YMCA camp.
I got sick and missed the big hide-and-seek event (every cabin had a hider)

The one in Leonardtown does that - not sure about others because we don’t go to others beyond drive-thru. But it’s kinda nice, I guess. Beats standing around with the unwashed masses waiting for their to-go orders!

MIL’s nurse came today, and she’ll try to come every Moanday morning, so that’s good to know in advance. We talked about her tremors, her meds, her sleeping, her eating, her near-falls, and her potential trek to Indy. One thing the nurse suggested was taking 2 days to get there rather than 10-12 hours in the car all at once. So we’ll probably do that.

The hospice folks here in St. Mary’s county are aces!! We’ve now settled into a routine and we know MIL’s 3 main carers. Now if we could just get her to behave! She’s determined to walk without a walker - that’s her goal. The nurse didn’t say it, but we’re pretty sure it’s an impossible dream. Last night, just standing at the bathroom sink, she got to trembling and she fell against the cabinet, cutting her hand and elbow. Last week, she fell against the same cabinet and cut the other elbow. But she insists it’s not a fall because she didn’t go all the way to the floor. We make sure to tell the nurse exactly what’s going on.

I hate to say this, but I almost hope UncleJ has a bit of a relapse so MIL can’t go to Indy. Her sister has her hands full as it is, and when UncleJ gets really bad, it takes everything AuntB has to care for him. And she’s 80, fercryinoutloud!! So we’ll just figure it out as we go along.

Meanwhile, BIL took MIL to WalMart and she was going to try to get him to take her out to lunch. While they’re gone, I got some outside time. I planted my 6 cucumber seedlings and five cantaloupe seedlings. The 'maters are still too small, especially with rain forecast for the next 2 days, so I left them in the greenhouse for at least another week.

I’m done till it’s time to get ready for family supper. My book and recliner beckon!

I would be there in a heartbeat! Just chilling out in the woods, cooking over a wood fire, maybe some canoe paddling and falling asleep in a tent listening to a gentle rain. A trout stream would be a great thing too.

Happy birthday cookie!

Yes, it is. Reminds me of the adage “a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step”. You’re on the way to completing that journey. Good job.

I would suggest that you go for a hike. Take Seminole Rd west to just before it curves south (left) and walk the trail at Dune Harbor Park. Very relaxing!

FCM Yay for the hospice folks getting it together!!!

I would be there too! Sounds wonderful although I don’t fish; well I could but I won’t take it off the hook (my Dziadzia used to do that for me). Also some hiking and we’d have to have s’mores. I’d bring my guitar if someone still had chops.

Happy Birthday Cookie!!! :birthday: :tada:

Hubs brought up going to the nursery to get some plants. I didn’t have a chance to tell him over the w/e. I decided to compromise so I told him I didn’t want to go overboard this year. He said ok, how about 2 cherry tomato plants, 4 tomato plants, I was nodding during this, then he said 2 cucumber plants and I emphatically said NO and that ended that. :slightly_smiling_face:

How does a single man eat an entire elephant?

One bite at a time.

Oh, I’ve been there! (This is so fun; another Mumper knows my area. It feels … comfortingly homey.)

Thanks for the reminder about the park, though once I get my shit together pants on, imma planning to get more potting soil & an aloe plant, and play with dirt.
Those sunflower, zinnia, cosmos (oh my!) seeds ain’t plantin’ themselves.

Thanks for the good wishes, peepholes.

Well, yeah!

If there is a fire, there has to be fud-on-a-stick. It’s kinda human nature.

Since you mentioned your Dziadzia … Polish campfires, in my memories, usually involve kielbasa (on a stick) and thick slices of crusty bread (on a stick) while someone sings old-fashioned drinking songs loudly & badly on an ill-tuned guitar, until nicely-charred sausage gets smooshed between that delicious crusty bread, and oh my gawds I am so hungry for that nostalgic memory right now.

American campfires involve chocolate and marshmallows.
… that’s not a bad thing!
Sticky, messy, delishush. Don’t knock a charred s’more in my hearing.

ETA: especially when the marshmallow catches fire for just a quick second until you blow it out. Then put that scortched sugar 'twixt your graham crackers fast enough for the residual heat to melt the (ideally Hershey Dark) chocolate pieces, while fireflies blink languidly in your peripheral.

Also Girl Scouts, but started in 4th or 5th grade, I think. Also did Annie, but was part of the chorus. Had sort of forgotten about it, until you mentioned it. Canoeing was my favorite activity.

When I was old enough to drive, I went to a different Girl Scout camp and helped out at one of the weekly camps for a couple of years.

I think my mother never did summer camp, but my dad was an Eagle Scout and had gone to Philmont, so he’s a big believer in summer camp.

Happy Birthday Cookie!

That sounds exactly like my main memories of camp, whether summer camp with scouting, or camping with my parents and friends.

Can’t camp without s’mores. Or banana boats.

Went to the doctor’s office this morning for a general checkup. I mentioned to my parents that I was doing a fasting blood test, and they said their doctors don’t do that anymore. I’m sure I’m not the only doing a fasting blood test.

Other than a weirdly elevated LDL, everything else is improved. So my doctor told the lab in the practice to make sure that when they send the blood out for additional testing (thyroid, B12 and D), they should test LDL again, because it shouldn’t have changed that much in so little time. Even the higher number is not at the point that it needs treating.

But I got two vaccines - tetanus (including diptheria and pertussis) in the left shoulder, and the first dose (of three!) of the tick-borne encephalitis vaccine in the right. Supposedly tetanus is supposed to hurt more. I think they are about the same level of discomfort. Fun start to the week. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Afternoon all. Have been biopsied, am now wearing bandages over my stitches (doc saw a ‘hanging mole’–that’s what I call it, at least–nearby and did a two-for-one snip). Was turned on my side and didn’t see a thing, but numbing agents these days work fast and efficiently, didn’t feel a thing. Have to keep them covered for a couple of weeks before having them removed, so swimming will have to go on hiatus until after Memorial Day. Feel fine, but probably will take it easy today, this is the first time any cutting has been done on me since I fractured my elbow in 2000. Given it is still cloudy and occasional raindrops are falling, I suspect soccer will be called off, so won’t have to worry about that. This did not affect my appetite at all as I’ve just polished off a Double Meat Whataburger w/cheese and fries.

Sticky Buns, hope the gallbladder checks out, but removing it is no big thing, I had mine out nearly 25 years ago and was in the hospital barely 24 hours, I expect it’s even less these days. And anyway you can check on that disability application?

  :grinning:

Taters, you need to schedule that week off soon as feasible, IMHO. And idiots and travel…

Glad you’re feeling better, Cat Glove.

Real Fish, that’s how it gets done, baby steps like you say. You’ll make it. Looking forward to seeing how CtE mortarboard comes out.

shoe, your Mom is what she is and isn’t going to change; don’t let her control you like this.

FCM, sounds like hospice is getting things in order, hopefully will help out a lot.

Dicey, I don’t think they asked me to fast before I gave blood at my checkup two weeks ago. Didn’t eat that morning anyway just to be careful.

OK, may take a nap now, awaiting 4pm and the notification if the soccer fields are closed or not. Take care all.

We roasted kielbasa on a stick, that my Dad whittled the end of, when we were out at Babcia & Dziadzia’s cottage on the lake; although my Mom brought regular hotdog buns. Put a little horseradish on, the uncles would say it puts hair on your chest.

Have done dishes, some clothes in pre-soak, going to nursery now.

I went to an Audobon camp for 3 or so years around 4-6th grade. 2 weeks in a cabin. Standard nature hikes, canoeing, songs around the fire, swimming, etc. The biggest thing I remember was the mid session activity. You had choices, but the one I always chose was the 24 hour solo. They hiked us up a mountain and everybody chose a spot out of sight and earshot and set up a hammock and skeeter net. IIRC, they honked an air horn to gather for meals. Elsewise you were on your own in the woods.

Prolly wouldn’t fly today.

Happy Burpday, cookie!

Actually, you can go to space camp down in metal mouse’s neck of the woods.

I don’t know. Shakespeare in the Park did this one year here. They tend to use a kinda-sorta southern setting for their productions and the accents in Henry V were so bad that I followed the French dialog better (and I haven’t been in a French class for 40+ years) than the English.

Happy birthday cookie!

I got a package in my mailbox today. JtC, the treats for Nelson meet with his pawprint of approval! Thank you so much.

I went to Singing Hills Girl Scout camp for a couple of years as a kid, and like hippy, returned as a scout leader as an adult. I also went to CYO camp a couple of years. My family usually set up our camper out at one of two lakes for most of the summer. Dad would commute to work from the campground and us kids were turned loose in the day time to swim, hike and fish with the other kids there. Mom would spend her day visiting with the other moms.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

I went to a church camp for 2 weeks. Really liked it and looked forward to it every year.

A friend went to a church camp that was way more serious. They had uniforms and marched. It sounded a bit militia-ish. Glad I went to the more loosely goosey one. She said she had a good time.

My Clubman Pinaud Virgin Island Bay Rum Cologne just came in the mail. It had leaked, because of a crack in the bottom of the bottle. Amazon says it’s not eligible for return, but I got on their chatbot and I’m supposed to be getting a refund.

I also got some Dickie’s ankle socks. I roll down my socks when I wear shorts on my walks, but the sun doesn’t get below my ankles. The new socks should let me tan down to the shoe line.

Up from naptime, watching hockey, having an Old Fashioned. Cheeseburger night.

Every morning when you wake up, eat a live frog. That ensure your day can only improve.

Just put Roxy to bed. Tobias went down an hour ago. Just as dinner ended, SIL got a gawd-awful migraine and actually passed out. Daughter took him to the ER and I took the kids home. Last I heard, they were putting SIL on an iv and gave him a CT scan. Not sure how much longer it will be. But always something.

While here, I folded 2 baskets of laundry. I considered cleaning the kitchen, but it’s too much of a mess. I don’t know how they can live like this.

Hope they won’t be too late. I’s tahred.

It was 80 out, nice! Here I sit with my space heater. Those on higher floors aren’t cold, but I feel safer on a lower floor.
Last summer I found out an acquaintance was dating this guy I dated for two weeks 3 years ago. He had raped me.
I wanted to warn her, she said he had changed.
I had to see them on the bus, I’d told her to tell him not to speak to me.
Saw her on the bus today. Seems he’s in jail because he choked her and tried to kill her.
I told her I had warned her and that I was glad she was alive.
Women need to be more picky.
I had a nice interview at a coffee shop. I will hear back.

Howdy Y’all! Been a rainy, rainy day. It stopped around fiveish, so I was able to go out and haul the biiiiiig trash can back up from the road to where it lives all week. Nappage and day drinkin’ were the big highlights of the day. I was unslothful for a little while and cleaned the kitchen fridge and the beerator. Sup also got fixed and et. Supposed to get rainy in a bit and rain all day tomorrow as well. Hope it rains all night. I love me some rain at sleepytime!

Hippie what a great story! Glad you had someone like Ray in your life.

DC I don’t think I’ve been inside a MickeyD’s in several years. I just may have to go experience that just to say I did.

Real_Fish how sweet of CtE! Enjoy havin’ the place to yourself.
