(Old) The first day of school in the MMP

The heat wave has broken. The real feel was 115 when I went to bed. This morning it is cloudy and 70 real feel. I stayed in the house for then2 days and was sooooo bored. This morning is the chiro, then PT this afternoon.

Nope, it really does work because the heat/sweat will cause the feeling to disappear and soon you’ll be craving more water. I wouldn’t recommend this for, say, cashiering in an air conditioned store but it will work when you are dealing with the ovens. And if your worried, up the time frame to an hour instead of a 1/2 hour. I’ve spent entire 8-hour shifts in this mode. It sure beats landing in the horspittle.

Agreed. my career in dealing with bosses who are wound too tight (and having been wound too tight myself as a boss) has led me to this. There’s more involved in the decision of course, but this is basically it.

Well, she made choices and they led her down the path to where she is today. Covid didn’t help. The thing is, underneath it all, she could be very likeable if she can find herself again and let go of the stress. But, if I point it out to here, I’ll be a goner for sure.

Ooo, like those glasses!

And must run or I’ll be late for irk. This thread is a total time suck.

Yes, you are correct.

Thank you. :slightly_smiling_face:
I finally got my Shingles shots last year. There are 2 in the series and have to be at least 60 days apart, if memory serves. Had the first last Monday in October and second last Friday in December. Hard to believe I waited so long after seeing the misery Mom was in when she had shingles. I put it down to the pandemic since I hadn’t been to the Dr in about 4 years since the Doc cancelled my appointment shortly before everything got shut down and I just didn’t go back until last fall.

Vacation starting Sunday at a lake house about an hour away. Normally shortly after reservation made, I make spreadsheets on Menus, food to pack, other items to pack, things to do near vacation site. Nada so far, so I MUST get busy today. Don’t know why I haven’t been motivated to do so yet. Hope I can kick myself into gear.

TGIF.

When I was working at the zoo, I once encountered a girl of about 9 or 10 walking by herself, clearly lost. I called security, and they began the search for her family while I stayed with the child. Throughout it all, she was remarkably calm and collected, answering all my questions matter-of-factly, even cheerfully.
Then, the instant she saw her mother, she immediately burst into tears and collapsed into her arms. Kids can be good at not letting on.

The landscaping is officially complete, and Mrs W and I are very pleased with it. Nice to finally have a useable outdoor space, once the temps fall below Hades levels, that is.
Next on the agenda: Grill shopping!

At about age 40 a woman friend of mine slipped on her steep narrow basement stairs & hyper-extended one knee, destroying it forever. Her ability walk was never even close to the same. She’s about my age, and we’ve lost touch since I moved away, but I have to imagine it’s giving her a world of trouble. She was always struggling not to balloon into a big person and was an inveterate walker before the accident. I doubt walking’s been in her exercise repertoire for 20 years now.

Punchline: Be exceedingly careful on stairs. Like maybe lock the mobile tripping hazards in their crates before going up or down. And never carry something that takes 2 hands; always have one free for the bannister, and actually have it on the bannister. That’s how I handle stairs.

@Kitten_Mitten: Just to be clear … Is your daughter undergoing discernment, or is she part of the committee helping grade and guide an applicant? And if the former, what is her intended goal?

My late first wife had been raised Catholic and later defected to the Episcopals, largely for their avowedly non-sexist attitude to Christianity. A bit late in life she tried to go down the discernment and seminary road to ordination, but rampant sexism and ageism at the diocese level torpedoed that. She never forgave the Church hierarchy for that slight. Despite remaining active in parish affairs for many years after.

Best of luck to daughter in her journey.

As to me:
Survived doc 1, the podiatrist. As usual she said “those are the best feet I’ve seen all week”. Foot checkups are a formality for healthy diabetics, but a necessity for raggedy diabetics.

Zipped over to the Social Security office. After a brief wait in an uncrowded waiting area I was seen by #15 who took my documents, made her copies, and sent me on my way with well-wishes. Even the security goons were friendly and helpful. Can recommend.

Now home and about to leave again for a brief groc run. Her Ladyship is off investigating volunteer opportunities at the Library. She loves libraries in general and our local one is quite nice. She’s now been retired ~18 months and I think boredom is setting in.

You’re welcome nellie and JtC. One of the things that I like about batter breads is that in a small kitchen, there is no clearing off a table or counter for kneading. Sloth for the win! :stuck_out_tongue:

You got your just rewards for a good deed metal mouse.

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, dog parked, bed stripped, a load of sheets / towels in the dryer, a load of clothes in the wash and fixing to do KP / clean house. After that, it will be bill paying time, then off to the grocery store.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Today’s fun features the morning off.

So I can go to the DMV. Apparently, California only lets one renew the driver’s license by mail so many times in a row, then requires an in-person visit, and I apparently hit that limit. Oh well, need to get a Real ID anyway, so I’ll take care of that this visit.

Then off to irk this afternoon. Gotta love a boss who’s only in our office a few hours a week, but dictates how everything must be arranged for those who are there forty hours a week, with no thought given to efficiency (sigh).

For whoever it was contemplating getting the shingles shot (brain is not yet booted), don’t plan anything for a day or two after each shot that requires you to actually be functional. That vaccine has a reputation for knocking the patient on his/her rump, and my own experience says that reputation is justified.

OMG, that bread sounds so good. I am going to try it, although I’ll have to buy the dill. I made an onion dill bread for the cafe when I was working, it was popular and my mom loved it.

If anyone else makes this bread let’s compare notes.

My dr’s office had the flu vaccine, didn’t have the RSV. My pharmacy did have both but by then I had already gotten the flu one at the dr’s office, so check with your pharmacy if the doc doesn’t offer it. Might as well check with the doc and see if it’s time for you to refresh your DTAP (tetanus). That’s an every 10 years thing so it’s easy to forget.

Good on you for pursuing the shingles series~shingles are NOT something you want. Can last for months, can cause loss of sight if on your face and there aren’t many medicines that seem to work very well for the pain, which can be agonizing. Some of the saddest cases I took care of as a nurse were older people with shingles-I got my first shingles vaccination the first day I was eligible for it as a result.

And I need my next Covid booster too. I think that will be a next week problem. Fortunately my pharmacy is at my big grocery store so it’s easy to pop in to get poked. If I time it right I can pick up some half-price doughnuts, win-win :syringe:=:doughnut::doughnut:! Plus FCM would approve of the fuel discount points that the store gives with vaccinations. I’m up to 55 cents off every gallon after yesterday’s poke. Now I just gotta remember to use them when I next gas up. My history on that is pretty feeble.

This what I remember too. Those two months made it hard to remember for me and I missed shot #2 by many months but it turned out to not be a problem, I just got when I finally remembered and the pharmacist said that was ok. Shingles shots are the only one I clear the day afterwards of having to be anywhere or do anything and I’m glad I do.

I do my English literacy volunteering in my local library for just this reason. I love words and libraries and literacy volunteering there gives me the best of at least two worlds. I wish I’d started doing it years ago. The immigrants and refugees I’ve worked with are wonderful folks to have in my world and I can barely wait for the fall term to start to meet my new learners. Of course, I learn just as much or more from them than they do from me, but they don’t seem to have caught on to that yet.

Me too. No more laundry baskets for me-a big bag with handles and the other hand on the bannister and I go s-l-o-w and ever so deliberately, especially going down.

Totally agree. And for me, the second shot hits a little harder than the first. But again, avoiding shingles is sooooo worth it.

Very very good advice. On Good Friday 2020 Hubs was bringing the large hamper down the stairs and fell when he got to either the 2nd or 3rd from the bottom. Had a 3 cm tear in the ligament that connects probably a muscle in upper leg to something in/near knee. So much for softball or golf that year.

Undergoing discernment with goal of becoming Episcopal priest. Same reason for defecting to Episcopals although in addition their good attitude toward people who were attracted to all kinds of others. Luckily it seems like there isn’t sexism and ageism in the Chicago diocese. Thank you very much, I will extend your wishes to daughter and also about your late wife as her situation is very similar.

I opened the schedules from 2 years ago vacation and have started making revisions. Also got out the 14 page packet that the owners of the vacation rental sent. Had sent my Sis an email asking her to bring her paddleboard and now I’ve read that lake house has 2 paddleboards, 4 kayaks and a pontoon paddleboat that we can use. Ok, back to planning.

Same in a retirement community. When the inlaws were still in Ocala, it seemed every time we visited them, we heard a recitation of who had died since we were last there…

As for me. my big fear is falling down the stairs when I’ve got Tobias here, not having my phone on me, or being unable to use the phone even if I had it. Needless to say, I always have one hand on the rail as I descend or ascend. And I try to always have my phone on me, but I don’t always have pants with pockets. Dammit. They do that to women’s clothing, you know.

This is definitely a YMMV situation - I never felt any effects from my shingles shots, apart from the little owie at the injection site. Same with flu and Covid shots - no significant effects at all. Which is weird, because I don’t handle pain well.

Anyway, home from erranding. There was no line at the convenience center, so in and out quickly. Then I stopped at WaWa to fill the car and went to WalMart for the stuff I needed, including 3 skeins of yarn. When I finish the book I’m reading now, I’ll start crocheting for the October fundraiser.

Meanwhile, it’s lunch time, then I’ll attack the disaster that is the breakfast bar. There’s so much crap piled up there, you could barely find space to put down a glass, let alone have a meal. So there will be my afternoon.

Me same. Shingrix was a total non-event for me.

Sometimes after a vax I feel a bit like a cold coming on, that not-right lethargy starting that evening. But by wake-up I’m back at normal.

Good morning!

It’s 61F with a bit of rain along with occasional rolling thunder. The rain and clouds are supposed to dissipate and we’ll have sunny skies with 85F temps by late afternoon.

So, after working for a little over two hours yesterday, I decided I was over it and needed some time off because my attitude was really bad, I was really angry (so stupid), and my GAF was completely broken. I did not have any impending emergencies, I had taken care of my work, and since no one could be bothered to get me the stuff I needed for an impending deadline, I decided I didn’t give a rat’s ass. I was at my limit for credit hours balance, so I emailed my deputy, SD, and the MPA stating I had to take the rest of the day off and did not supply a reason. My leave; my business.

I didn’t do anything productive with my off hours other than attending to my plants and lawn. My work cell rang, which doesn’t happen too often, so I checked it. It was spam, but I opened my email on the off chance something big came up. There was nothing there that I considered urgent. I received an email from my cardholder requesting my approval for her to spend four grand on another state’s conference fees. The fees would be charged to their accounting code, of course. It’s not an emergency to me; if they still need it on Monday, my answer will be NO because the cardholder will exceed her monthly limit when she takes care of some large-scale purchases we need. I spent months researching that stuff, setting up demonstrations, and dealing with high-level approvals (all the MPA’s job), and I’m not stopping the process because another state didn’t take of their business, and the MPA isn’t smart enough to think of the outcome for our state. I’m so glad I took the day off yesterday!

She likes to take on “extra” without considering how it impacts WHAT SHE SHOULD BE DOING. That shit is going to stop, too, unless she takes care of her regular stuff first and meets deadlines.

My husband went to the eye doctor yesterday (FINALLY!, but I had to make the appointment for him) so he could get a prescription for new glasses. He broke his regular glasses some time ago, and never got them replaced. He chose not to wear glasses for three years and his driving has become scary. I insisted he get glasses or I would no longer let him drive. His new specs should be ready in around two weeks.

Now, I just need to get him back to the doc to figure out his nasal congestion issue. I’m sure it’s allergies, but I just want to make sure that’s all it is. He does take allergy medication, but it doesn’t really help him all that much. He can’t sleep at night, and the fact that he uses a BIPAP makes the congestion worse. His lack of sleep translates to no energy and inability or unwillingness to do much. I miss the guy who used to be willing to go out and do things and not want to rush back to the house because he’s tired.

Catglove, I also used to prepare spreadsheets for vacation, camping, or backpacking. I was very organized, lol!

I need to get a move on. I slept in way late today and lost my allotted goof-off time. I didn’t really fall asleep until around 2:30, but I stayed in bed until close to 7:00 am. That’s very late for me.

Everyone take care!

We don’t have stairs anymore, but we replaced our laundry baskets we these and we love them! They’re very light, easy to carry with one hand, and they fold up for storage. Cheap, too!

Walmart sells the same laundry hampers. Can recommend. If you drag them across the floor you’ll eventually wear out the base. Then get a new one for $5.

i had a lovely night last night. first i had a celebrational beverage while watching the evening news. then my subscription box arrived! i liked everything in it.

today is a cloudy, rainy friday. looking very forward to going home and applying cats.

stairs are a serious danger zone. i had a relative who got to one hundred, then had a tumble down stairs, and passed 2 weeks later.

a friend did the laundry basket tumble. he was in his mid 20’s at the time. he came home and tossed his jacket on the stairs (seriously) then at some point went up the stairs (did not pick up the jacket) got the laundry basket and foot met jacket. everything went flying, and he ended up with multiple breaks in his ankle and leg. 6 weeks in a chair, not even crutches at that point, then 6 weeks on crutches (no weight), finally after 4 months, walking unassisted.

he was lucky someone was with him when it happened. ambulance had to be called. i knew someone else who waited 5 days before someone checked on her. it is really important that if you live alone, no matter your age, that you have a check in system. relative, friend, work, someone who if they don’t see or hear from you can raise the alarm.

I was on the 200 Slide, and it was an easy day. Apparently it wasn’t so easy in Smalls without me, though. They also were giving out Brown branded 2 quart coolers. Probably part of a “Thank you for not striking and leaving us trying to do your job”, or just encouraging hydration.

An inability to refuse responsibility, combined with masochism.

So you made Mumper Bread?

Bummer about your neighbor, Sensei Most the time the cops knock on my door, they are armed to the teeth, and looking for someone.

Or it was a ploy for a pony.

The first time through I read that as “An inability to refuse responsibility, combined with alcoholism.” Which made a pretty weird cocktail of ideas. “Responsible Alcoholics I have known” is another of those very thin books on the shelf.
