Thanks. I mean… I withhold $400/month from her rental income to pay her property taxes (and it isn’t enough). I pay the income tax on the rental income. I hand;ed the unclaimed property claim last year. She just sits around collecting free money (from Disability, and from the rental), as she’s done for the past half-century. Yes, Dad helped me out when I needed it. But he’s been dead for over 27 years. I’ve had jobs, lost jobs, gotten new jobs, managed my mortgage, and tried to be responsible. I haven’t had a guardian angel in three decades. I just can’t be ‘dad’ to my sister. I have my own problems. She’s the one with access to social workers. She’s the one who… does whatever she does all day. I love her, but her irresponsibility is negatively affecting my health. (Also, she always calls/texts on holidays, when I expect to relax.)
ETA:
I just can’t deal with it anymore. I love her, but I can’t be her daddy. (She’s eight years older than I. She should be looking after me!)
I might have bedhead & jammies, but I’d friggin’ drag my carcass outta bed for homemade croissant (!! … how extra fancy!) French toast!
What a terrible problem. I hope you can soldier through this difficulty.
We survived Saturday night on a holiday weekend. One guy got burned (accidental collision with another crew) although upon inspection not too badly, and Grandma Co-worker was back but 1a.) clearly still not feeling well, and 2b.) being extra snippy.
Understandable, but … meh.
Called my mom for her birthday, and found out S.M. had sent her a b-day message, in Polish! My mom was so charmed. (They’re F.B. friends - “Worlds colliding, Jerry!”) but it seemed to really warm my mother’s heart that she took the time & effort to translate and everything.
So it was even better, when we finally had a quiet moment, and I told S.M. that her message had landed so well … and y’all she beamed with joy; it was like the sun poured across her face, she was so happy, that something so simple had made my mom so happy.
You can pick the scapes and cook em; if you leave them to develop and flower you get some happier bees, but smaller bulbs. Then let the foliage die back (doesn’t have to be completely dead, just mostly), then carefully dig it up and find out what you have.
Maybe that fella will come back for the watch soon!
Lazy start today.
Not sure if the pressure washing will happen today or not- I also need to do laundry, and the bit that really needs cleaning is right under the washing line, so I can’t really do both. I also need to build a frame for the bed around the apple cordons, so I can purty the area up with flowers and stuff. That should have been done months ago, really.
The forecast is for unusually warm sunny weather for the rest of the week, so maybe I’ll do the pressure washing in the evening instead. I want to do it on a day when I won’t mind getting soaked, because I just know that will happen…
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN 'Tis 70 Amurrkin out and mostly clear with a predicted high of 87 with rain/tstorms/apocalypse around three p.m. The big item on today’s agenda is deheathenization in which I have second Verger duty. It is also Pentecost Sunday which means we pull out the incense and carry on. Afterward we will have some kind of McLunch to be brought back to da cave to eat. RDOS inactivities will then ensue.
Cookie I have a cheap back scratcher from the Dollah Sto’. Never researched 'em before and can’t imagine how much difference there could be. Then again, I am cheap thrifty.
JtC cool story about the pocket watch. It may not have much monetary value, but it has value as a piece of family history. I have no idea re the garlic. Perhaps nuts will be able to provide assistance. And so she did!
FlyBoy good for you! If sis wants the money she should deal with it.
shoe most of the time it really is those small acts of kindness that make us the most happy.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tumbly. Then purtification for deheathenization must commence.
Happy Sunday Y’all! Happy Pentecost to those who observe.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off today. Spot trampled me when I awoke and has some attention, but has now gone back to his snit. I shall do morning cleaning and afternoon sloth. It is 61 degrees Ferret Height(16.111 Centipedes), and there is a DENSE FOG ADVISORY, but it’s hard to tell due to the plastic on the windows.
Spot is not.
Nifty display.
It’s half past nine, but I don’t care…
It’s flooz o’clock somewhere…
It also prevents the hose.
FB revealed that our Loss Prevention guy is brother to one girl I used to tailgate with at hockey. I don’t think “I used to get hammered with your sister in a parking lot” would be a good ice breaker, though.
Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 22c/72f with a predicted high of 26c/78f and partly cloudy. Weather app says “Fucking warm AF.”
All three watches were made by J W Benson in London, one of them is Victorian but the other two may not be quite so old. They will all have some value, the jeweller wasn’t able to help much as he doesn’t do valuations and he said that the people they use would give me a price based on replacing the watches, rather than what they would be worth to an antique dealer or a collector. He gave me a couple of places to try, as they should definitely have an insurance valuation.
Very true! Some people start out exasperating and never change.
That doesn’t sound like a bad thing, you’ve had a pretty busy time lately so you deserve a bit of a break.
Knots I’m sorry to hear about your cousin.
Cats can sulk when they want to, until they realise that sulking does not get them fuss or treats.
It’s still a good story, and you know where your flooziness must have come from!
That is a good point at which to say “no” to her and keep saying it. She will never learn to deal with things for herself if she has someone else on hand to do it for her. Sadly, she now seems to expect that help from you, but if it’s affecting your health and your mental wellbeing, then she needs to get on with things for herself.
Down here, it’s already very warm and the neighbours have been busy pressure washing things, and mowing/strimming things. That most likely means back garden bbq and loud trashy music later.
Yesterday was busy but productive. I went to the gym and had my penultimate session with Amrit, as the weather was so nice, we did part of the session outside. That reminded him about the big tractor tyre out there and he thinks there might be some sledgehammering next week!
I came home and got showered, then we had lunch and went into town. I took the pocket watches to the jeweller who was very helpful but couldn’t really give me the detail I needed. Afterwards, I wandered around the shops for a while until 'im indoors had done his stuff. We went home via the supermarket to get some stuff for dinner. He didn’t want to cook so we got the makings of a ploughman’s instead. My evening was spent on the sofa watching “Project Hail Mary” and “Send Help” before I headed off to bed.
Today all I’ve done is tend to the needs of cats and drink tea. I have about an hour in which to get my hair washed, and get some lunch, then I am off to the pet store for a fundraising activity. They’re have a “special rescue weekend”, not sure what that entails, but as their partner charity, we were asked to be in-store for at least six hours today. We usually hope to get enough volunteers to do 2hrs each in pairs, but it’s a bank holiday weekend so lots of people already have plans. We have enough people to cover the day, but our Fearless Leader is having to do a double shift. I’ll try to get her to sit down for most of it (she has hip and knee problems), and possibly take herself across to Costalot Coffee for a break.
The reason we’ve resisted this is that we’re never sure how long we’ll be gone and six hours crated seems extreme, if it’s not bedtime, that is.
He does have a life jacket and we have taken him to the boat, but when the floorboards are up in the main cabin, it’s a very bad idea to have him aboard. Now that most of the engine room work is done, he’ll have more chances to go with us.
The rain came down hard last night, but it appears we’ll have a bit of a reprieve today, tho it will remain cloudy. Then this evening, the rain should return and continue on and off till maybe Thursday. We’re promised low 70s today and into the 80s this week, but today started at 54 Ferrets.
We were both productive yesterday - FCD polished the reading lamps from the boat - they started out kinda brown and dull and ended up shiny brass! One needs to be repaired, but he’ll tend to that. And I sewed velcro on all the curtain tie-backs, since we decided the cord wasn’t the right answer. Today I’ll iron all the curtains and replace the couple of broken slides. And maybe tomorrow I’ll hang them again. Or maybe wait till all the rain is done and I can make the tracks all slippy again. I’d hate to get the spray lube on the clean curtains, and I’m pretty sure it needs to be applied to dry tracks. We shall see.
Our other bike is supposed to be delivered today. Since the rain has paused, I think I’ll give mine a test drive. I’ve downloaded the owner’s manual, so I should give that a read. I also found out helmets aren’t required in Merrylande if you’re over 16, and since we’ve got trikes, the chance of falling is pretty teeny, so for now, we’ve decided to pass. It’s not like we’ll be racing along mountain roads where a fall on the head would be a bad thing.
Just got a billing schedule from GEICO - why is it that our cars are getting older, two have the absolute minimum coverage required and max deductibles since they’re so old, we haven’t had a claim in years, and our premiums still go up? Dammit. We even did the senior citizen safe driving course to reduce our payments… So we’re paying for the stoopit drivers out there. And the CEO’s yacht. Dammit.
Morning all. Have shopped and broken fast (I may have to stop going to Kroger for the Sunday paper, I have to walk past their pecan sticky buns and twice in a row I yielded to temptation). Will remain slothful until 11am when I’ll head over to the Golden Corral for Sunday Dinner. Will try to work some of those calories off at the gym, but my right little toe is aching something fierce, may need to look up a podiatrist and get it looked at–it’s fine when I’m resting or sitting but do any serious walking or pedaling and… Wearing a ‘toe cap’ to see if that helps.
Weather is still wet, we’re supposed to get rain this morning and there is a 25-50% chance all week of more wet stuff. Temperatures shouldn’t get above 80F this week, so at least the rain has done that much.
Flyboy, I understand your frustration, but I wonder if she is even capable of doing for herself anymore; but I concur, enough is enough and you have your own life and responsibilities to attend to first and foremost.
Shoe, that was a caring thing S.M. did for your Mom.
Nut, I tend to live by the motto ‘no reason to do it today if it can be put off until tomorrow’
swampy, happy incensing!
boo fae, interesting on the watches and I concur you should at least get some valuation on them. Hope the fundraising effort does well.
FCM, I await the inevitable picture of you on your electric bike. Not taking any bets on FCD’s showing up today. And my bill from GEICO went up due to my new car, but yeah, doesn’t seem to matter how well we drive anymore.
doggio, lovely pic.
And the pecan sticky bun has been eaten and jeans are on hangers, so the morning activities are done and sloth reigns for another couple of hours. Have a good Sunday all.
It’s 48F and mostly sunny outside. We are expecting a mixture of sun and clouds throughout the day, with a daytime high of 70F.
FCM, trikes can tip, too. Get a MIPS helmet, please. Also, I hear you on the rising cost of car insurance. I feel totally ripped off.
Knots, I’m sorry about your cousin.
Johnny, I’m sorry that life is so frustrating for you right now, but it’s good that you’re pushing your sister to be self-reliant.
Other than cleaning my kitchen yesterday and watering the pots on my front porch, I was not productive…at all. The clouds didn’t clear until way late in the day, and it didn’t really warm up all that much either. I was actually kind of cold, which is rare for me. Today, I have no excuse, and I’ll be out back planting and transplanting.
That’s about the extent of today’s plans.
Please take care of yourselves (lookin’ hard at you, FCM). Don’t make BBBoo come yell at you.
Awoke to the low rumble of tunderboomers, the gentle pitter-patter of rain … and the sound of one determined bird chirping his fool head off despite the weather.
I gotta close again tonight, and since it’s the day before a big holiday we’ll probably start off absolutely slammed. Yay.
It’s theoretically on the truck and enroute from Upper Marlboro to my house. We shall see…
It’s been a month since Ziva ventured into the litter box in the stairwell, so I’ve removed it. She rarely leaves the bedroom and she uses the box in there at least twice a day so I don’t think getting rid of the other one will be an issue. I’ll hose it out and leave it at the convenience center - surely someone there will take it.
My big plans for the rest of the day include turning the leftover rotisserie chickie into salad and ironing boat curtains. Wild life I live here!!!
Buddy’s been a bit grumpy lately, too. Spending a lot of time being a bed lump (but does purr when cuddled up to, and is still joining me under the covers for cuddles), and not as lap-prone as usual. I think his adolescent sister’s getting on his nerves a bit.
The bike has been delivered - huzzah huzzah!! - and my freezer has been cleaned because I managed to dump a full glass of Diet Coke all over the place while I was getting ice. We have a bottom freezer, hence the gawd-awful mess. I had to pull the fridge away from the wall, mop the floor, then empty the lower basket of everything, take the basket out and clean it, then rinse and dry all the stuff that was in the lower basket. So that was fun. Dammit.
I’m having some lunch before having a go at the chickie salad. Then I guess I’ll get out the ironing board. Unless FCD gets home first and we assemble his bike.
Dunno how much more excitement my heart can take!!
A sunny Sunday. Savory oatmeal for breaking of the fast and probably leftover pasta for dinner. Gotta go check on the tomato plant in a bit. Looks like attending the play has fallen by the wayside.
I have found as I get older that I’m more and more like a toddler. If I’m thinking about [whatever] while carrying [something], often the [something] will be forgotten. Leading to a full glass being carried while tipped a bit too far and liquid sloshing out, or a plate not carried level enough and food slides off. etc. Ugh.
I am working diligently to re-train myself: Don’t try to do two unrelated things when one of them is carrying something spillable. Set the spillable thing down, do the other thing, then pick the spillable back up.
I fear a bit for 20-years future me if current me is already noticing these changes. It’s not often, but it’s often enough to lead to too many cleanups on Aisle 3.
Yeah - I get on FCD’s case when he adds ice while holding his cup over the ice bin. Guess I should listen to myself.
We’ve assembled FCD’s bike and took both for a test drive in our neighborhood. It’s going to take a little getting used to when turning, and boy-howdy does it accelerate going downhill!! That’s a bit unnerving, but the assist while pedaling uphill is really nice!! There are only 5 buttons on the controls so some have multiple uses. I need to pull out the manual and figure it all out. Then we need to learn how to get them on and off the boat. The adventure continues!
About lunchtime, the fire alarm suddenly went off. I silenced it, checked for things that were on fire (nothing) and assumed it was just cos I had the door open and someone was having a bbq or bonfire or something, and went about my day. 3 hours later, it did it again… This time I actually climbed up and checked what’s going on- the 10 year batteries are due to run out in 2 weeks.
Oh.
That’s probably why then.
And, of course, it turns out all the legislation has changed since they were fitted by the previous owner, so instead of just replacing that one and the one upstairs, which was fitted the same time (but presumably the batteries have lasted better cos it doesn’t go off every time I burn toast), I now need 4 interlinked alarms to meet the regs. I have removed and hopefully disconnected the beepy one because I’d rather do it now than at 3am next time it randomly goes off, left the one upstairs for now, and hopefully the fancy new ones should arrive on Wednesday. Bah. That was not on the day’s spendy list…
Still, it beats living in a former rental place where they had a faulty alarm but didn’t get it looked at or replaced for weeks and it spent a full night going off every 30 minutes… so I had to sleep in the shared corridor slamming the system reset button every time it went off 'cos I was the only one not working in the morning and there was no way to turn the system off…
