(Old) The MMP is the place to be!

This week has been an absolute shitshow of epic proportions. Reading every piece of “literature” coming out of the current administration makes me vomit. Every time I see a new memo or order, I throw up a little bit in my mouth. “What now?” It’s my job to follow along, and I am so very, very worried about our nation’s health and safety. I’m sure that this latest plane crash was caused by a multitude of factors, but last week’s firing of the FAA head and their safety board had to have had a hand. It was heartbreaking. And the fallout from the federal funding memo was just horrific. A friend of mine had to rush to keep the lights on for the low income maternity ward she manages in a non-profit hospital. There is so much potential for suffering it is staggering.

At the end of the week, I’m going on a work trip. Since I work in healthcare, I’ve been explicitly advised not to wear nametags or any corporate identifying information for “safety reasons.” So that’s nice to look forward to.

Guys, I don’t know about you, but I don’t like this timeline.

Anyway, complain, complain - other than that, the day is drizzly and cozy. It’s finally getting warmer, or at least warm enough to melt the ice outside, and we’re able to park in the garage again, which is great. Overlygirl is at school for now. I think tomorrow will be a different story since she complained of a sore throat and nausea and texted me this morning asking if she could go to volleyball practice if she maybe, possibly came home from school. When I said no and asked her to go to the nurse, she refused. I reminded her that she was hosing the rest of her team if she got them sick; I do believe this is the first time I’ve hoped to get a call from the nurse.

When I was younger and used to experience frequent periods of depression or extreme stress, I would force myself to go into my journal and write my list of Three Good Things. Today’s list: 1. I got a contract done today, one I’ve been working on for more than a year. 2. My knee isn’t broken. 3. I’ve been going out for walks almost every day and hope to be running again in a couple of weeks.

All good things.

I’m familiar with frogging. But it just occurred to me .. nobody at work knows the term. But we do it, too.

“Uh, are you making { ticket? }”
“Yeah, almost done.”
“The one that’s … NOT supposed to have ham on it?”
" … oh, DAMMIT."
{ spends a coupla minutes undoing all the damn ham }

Oh, imma teach my crew a word today!

In a kinder world, the two of you would be next-door neighbors and besties.
Kindred souls, for sure.

Furminator.

Lemme see if I can cough (heh) up a link.

Only if the bottle of maple syrup leaks.

I can’t be the only one remembering the “coffee can” scene from The Big Lebowski am I?

Putting it mildly.

Today my background check came through and I was able to take the test. I am now officially a Certified Peer Recovery Supporter!

I just have to figure out what that means for me.

I’ve managed to come down with the flu. It’s rampant in my area and seems like either everyone I know has it or their kids do. I got my flu shot last fall so hopefully it doesn’t get too bad. I did do a Teledoc appointment and the doctor was willing to call in Tamiflu since I had a positive result from a home test kit.

Recipe?

@SurrenderDorothy Thank you for the laughs - you’ve got quite a cast of characters around you! And good luck with the job interview.

Still have ~30 posts to go but that will have to be enough for now! Off to the couch…

Right before I went to bed I saw the terrible breaking news about the mid-air collision near National airport; it happened about 16 miles east of my place. Between the explosions and the water I’m not surprised there are no survivors, but it’s such a tragic accident. :anguished:

At least work has settled down some: all of the crises have been either resolved or mostly resolved – including the one that popped up yesterday morning – and things are pretty quiet for me (right now at this very minute :crossed_fingers:). I feel terrible for my customers, who are reeling from all of the EOs. As others can attest, morale among most feds is super low at the moment.

Bailey’s vet appointment was only mildly traumatic. I took her for a super short walk before putting her in the car, but she hates being picked up/carried and she was uncomfortable during both car rides. Then, on top of the car ride and getting an injection (flu shot), she had to suffer the indignity of having her tushie thoroughly cleaned: because of her occasional incontinence, there was some dried poop I couldn’t seem to budge. It’s hard to really clean a dog’s hindquarters with just one hand, when the other arm is needed to hold her in place/hold her up! Anyway, everyone survived and she seems to have forgiven me. And one of the staff commented that she’s in great shape for a dog her age (16), which made me quite happy.

In two weeks I’m going to a jazz festival and will board her for three nights, and I might start using the vet vs Dogtopia* (which she’s gone to for the past 10+ years); right now I have reservations at both places. At the vet she’d be in a kennel the whole time – except for meals and a few walks each day – but she mostly just sleeps at Dogtopia anyway, and she might honestly prefer the solitude. Also the older she gets, the more I like the idea of having on-site medical care. Plus, the vet is cheaper…like, 41% cheaper. On the other hand, though, she’d be completely alone from 8pm-6am every night: there’s no staff in the animal hospital when they aren’t open. I’m not crazy about that, even though I think she’d be fine and would probably just sleep anyway (it’s only two more hours than I’m usually asleep for). My main concern is her being incontinent in her sleep/the middle of the night, but I think as long as they put her in a big enough crate so she can get away from any mess it should be alright. I have time to decide, but I’m leaning toward trying the vet.

*Yes, those are the only two choices: staying at a home with other dogs would be terrible for her, and having someone come to the house isn’t an option for various reasons.

Over the weekend I developed a random cough, but I’m not sick or congested at all: when it happens, it’s almost like something is temporarily caught in my throat (but I never feel the need to clear my throat; it’s always a cough). The internet – WebMD, Mayo Clinic, etc. – thinks it’s likely due to post-nasal drip. I do have some dry-nose issues that could be causing that, but I’m already doing a lot of the things the internet suggests (using a humidifer, drinking more water, etc.). If it doesn’t go away soon, I’ll make an appointment with an ENT: I can’t sing (voice lessons, jam sessions, etc.) like this. I’m a little grumpy, because I’ve only been completely free of the lingering holiday cold symptoms for a week or so and now this. Meh.

In other news, the last document I needed for my taxes arrived today: now I have the interest statement from my credit union, the W2 from my employer, and the W2 from the county (for my election officer pay). My taxes are pretty straightforward, so I will likely file this weekend and get that off my to-do list. Yay!

I’m looking forward to dinner, because I’ll be trying a new product from a familiar brand: Sukhi’s makes chicken tikka masala Naanwiches and samosas that I’ve loved for years, and this evening I’ll be trying their jalapeño and cheddar samosas (which I just discovered). Should be yummy!

Wow…my TV is only 55"! :astonished:

“Skip” is SUCH a better word than “dumpster”! I wish it were one of those English words I could start using that might make me sound pretentious but everyone would know what I meant…unfortunately, I believe that “skip” would roundly result in blank stares and wouldn’t be worth the pretention. Heh.

Congrats! :tada:

Oh no!! I hope you feel better soon!

Our FFOTUS’s bulb is dim and getting dimmer. I used to pray for God to make him a better man, but I gave up on that. I’ve resigned myself to watching him embarrass the nation every day. Several times already, he has done spectacularly stupid, dangerous things, and each time the public outcry got him to back down. How long will it take for him to step in something that won’t let go?

Well, that was more political than I should have posted here. I apologize for that, but it’s what’s clogging up my head today.

I have to face it: I’m not faring well. Last night I couldn’t get to sleep even though I was bone tired. Then I had nightmares. I know I keep saying, “This is not about politics,” and I don’t think it is. It’s deeper than that. However it’s pretty damned hard to keep whatever-it-is out of here when it’s dismantling the country I was raised to love and the principles I was taught to believe in. I spent 25 years of my life teaching kids to believe in those principles, too, not to mention instilling that belief in my own kids. I’ve lived through setbacks and misbegotten policies and could always trust the system to eventually right itself. All of that is gone. I’m a glass-half-filled person who tends to take the long view in this sort of thing, but there is no long view, and the glass is half-filled with very toxic stuff.

I think about how my parents sacrificed for this country. My dad was in the army in WWII, and my mom, as I may have said, worked a full second shift as a riveter at a warplane factory during the war to “do my bit to help my country.” My mother immigrated here as a child. I’m both relieved that they’re not here to see what’s happening, my conservative father and my progressive mother, and heartsick that the beliefs behind their sacrifices are getting jettisoned.

I’m sorry I can’t Mundane right now. I’ll be back when I can, hopefully soon.

I have one of those, but I think it’s for a short-hair.

I know how you feel. In my genealogy research over the years I found all manner of people doing extraordinary things to survive or to further themselves to make the lives of their children better. Mayflower travelers, American Revolution soldier, Civil War soldier, wagon maker, fruit vendor, you name it. So to see this characterless, humorless, vindictive piece of shit rise to the top is most distressing. And I have to wonder if this has been our fate all along. But that’s a discussion for a different forum.

Thanks fly boy. I copied and pasted.

Howdy all. Late afternoon here and I have been quite slothful, outside of getting the garbage bin back in the garage and observing the TryGreen guy put something on my lawn, have accomplish nothing at all. Will try to put the cleaned dishes away and will think about (and probably skip) doing my walkies at the gym tonight, especially as rain in due to show up about 7pm.

I’m going to stay away from the politics, believe me I understand why folks are upset, but I come here for the good and gracious company of people I like and admire and keep any political thoughts to those parts of the SDMB. But that’s just me; if you need to vent to us, so be it.

FCM, hope the trip is better than you think; and if you think those puny Eastern things are mountains…  And agree with doing on your own as much as possible, except when there is a ‘must see’ that needs a tour.

Yay!!

52, take care of yourself.

Oopsie, a tough call, I think I would go with the vet too, see how she is when yo pick her up. I’m still waiting on Edward Jones, they promise the tax stuff will be up by 15 Feb at the latest…we’ll see.

And time to fix the evening’s repast and then make up excuses not to go to the gym. Y’all take care.

I went to the grocery store to use what was left of my food stamps; they get filled Sunday.
I got 2 choc muffins. They are $2 each.
I put them in a bag.
When I get home I see she charged me for 1.
Yay.
I went to the free meal. They had pulled pork, cheesy potatos, and cole slaw; got it to go.
Now at home about to read US magazine.

I have had tinnitus for decades. I’m sitting here and notice it is suddenly way lesser.
This is great!:ear:

I wonder how much of that is due to the current outrage and boycotting of Amazon. We used to get daily packages because it was so easy to just order a new bottle of shampoo through prime than get up off my butt and go to the kitchen and put it on the list. That stopped a couple of weeks ago.

This brush looks very ineffective and rather painful, but it works great and the cats always seem to enjoy it. There are two sides so you can do the long fur on their backs and sides and then use the shorter side for their legs if needed.

We are also expecting rain tonight and then flooding tomorrow due to the snow melt. We won’t get flooded here, but folks in the hollers might not be so lucky.

It sounds great to me and I hope that Boo is recovering well with her beloved grands and kids.

It is heartbreaking to know that more people voted for this than against it. I made the mistake of looking at a couple of right wing websites and they are celebrating everything the FFOTUS does and blaming Biden for all of the bad things that keep resulting.

Cats don’t talk politics and dogs just want everyone to be happy, so we are choosing to spend our time with the rescue critters. I think it is best for us all.

I hope Overlygirl recovers quickly and that none of the rest of the team gets what’s going round.

I love it!!!

Next you can teach them what Oorts are. Those little leftover bits of pepperoni and sausage left on the cutting (snack) table!

What a sweet thing to say, I can not compare to her, but I sure would be willing to check up on her critters while she was at work. I love the old ones.

Well, dang. I also hope it is a mild case. Drink lots of water!

I have to confess that I don’t really use a recipe for baked chicken. It is more of a “put things in the pan until it looks right” sort of thing. Tonight’s dinner included a large chicken breast, a couple of pats of butter, two potatoes quartered, a couple of stalks of celery chopped, half an onion diced, a handful of baby carrots cut into big pieces to make them easier to see and remove (cooked carrots are blech IMHO) and a couple of bay leaves. I’m a fan of poultry seasoning and of course salt and pepper is involved. Cover and bake at 350 for half an hour, then uncover, bake for another 15 minutes or until the chicken comes to temp (165F).

Plate the veggies and chicken to rest, put the pan on the stove and use the drippings for gravy.

I am very lazy.

State and county employees aren’t very happy either.

I heard that ICE visited my last workplace today. Clients are not allowed in work areas, they stay in the lobby and do their business over the phone. All of the employees have been fully vetted by the state. Two of the employees are the wrong color and also speak two languages.

ICE cruised the waiting room, then demanded access to the employee section of the building and got really rude when they heard one of the employees speaking the wrong language to a customer over the phone.

I’m so happy I am not in AZ anymore. It is easier to not look when it is being shoved into my face.

Poor girl, having strangers washing her butt must have been so embarrassing (but must have made her feel much better as well). I’m glad she is in such good shape.

May I suggest you wait for a while? You don’t want your stuff to get lost during the current confusion.

:people_hugging:

I understand. I fled for a week and it is still really hard for me to keep my mouth shut about how I really feel. I’m really sad to know that more people wanted this than didn’t.

Maybe you could learn to smoke weed. It has really been helping but it is starting to get kinda expensive lately.

Yes, I can mock her over that as well. I know mountains, and those are not mountains!

So today was pretty slothful. Hubs was in the mood to give critters treats so we went to the rescue spent a relaxing hour petting animals. I needed to stop at the grocery sto for a few things and then we ran my car through the car wash. I always forget how pretty the paint is because I let it get so grubby.

Stitching happened, I talked to Mom and Harry came over with a plate full of venison jerky.

It was our plate, which went to the Mrs with a charcuterie selection and of course it was returned full. I’m pretty sure Harry is the one who filled it, Mrs Harry didn’t seem the sort to just dump a pile of dry meat on a plate and call it good.

It’s all good, the plate will be refilled and sent across the gulch again in a couple of days.

I’ve discovered that Pluto TV has nature and dinosaur and cooking channels without political commercials (but a lot of others). It is great background distraction for stitching, currently I’m following a troupe of lemurs in Madagascar (which I fuckin speeled right the first time!!! How lucky was that???).

here is the link to the lemon curd ones. My experience with them was that it yielded WAY more than 24. I got 48 and, if I made it again, would actually go for more like 72 and make the cookie cups thinner. When I made them, though, it was my first time making lemon (or any) curd. Now, I want to experiment with all kinds of curd.

You are so sweet  There will be no more new anything for me for a while. The last two I got are keepers (as opposed to fosters) and they keep me on my toes! Also, I thought they would be hospice dogs. Like, maybe a few weeks, maybe a few months, a year if we’re lucky. But now, knowing them, I expect our time together will be measured in years! It’s impossible to see Louise doing her dinnertime dash and dance and not think she’ll probably be a dog who lives to see her 20s.

this or something similar is what we refer to as the “magic comb” at the shelter. A few of us have one stashed away so that it doesn’t get lost. It’s not great for removing the fine “rabbit fur” undercoat that some long-haired cats get, but it does help with tufts and tangles.

Anyway! I’ve scheduled another two job interviews, one of which is with my first choice place. It’s another shelter and I would be working as a foster/adoption coordinator. It’s a bit of a drive, but I’ve admired this shelter for a long time because of the dynamic and innovative approach they take to animal rescue and welfare. My current shelter has been around for a long time and some of the people in power are very resistant to change, research, or even just logic. There’s a lot of inertia where I work now and a lot of the higher-ups are focused mostly on getting through each day with the least amount of trouble, not on how we could do better and save more lives.
This shelter is newer, has a more engaged and enthusiastic volunteer base and seems to have a culture that encourages that (which is VERY unlike my shelter), and does a lot of community outreach and community support.
All of which is a long way of saying that I really hope I get this one. I would be a good fit. It would allow me to keep doing what I love and to, hopefully, be more effective at it. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Best of luck!

We’ve used a Furminator to good effect, but I don’t know how it would be for a long-haired cat.

Up from naptime, having a Jungle Bird and watching hockey.

“Fuck it Dude, let’s go bowling.” - Walter

I got that now, courtesy of the seasonal changes.

{{{{{{nellie}}}}}} We’ll be here for you(as will the noisy neighbors)

Spot wants me impeached for the lack of lunchmeat and ice cubes to chase around the kitchen.

Gotta have those to hang on.

I feel like I have lived 5 years this month.

And still one more day of January.

If you drive a few miles north to Dandridge, you could take the Bush’s Bean tour. It’s been a few years, but it was a fun one. Not free, but not expensive isForbidden Caverns outside of Sevierville.

I remember doing that with my cat, Figaro (RIP). She was a long hair, and like cookie and Sadie, I couldn’t seem to find a brush that did much to abate the horkage.

For me, it’s knowing that people who I respected are OK with at least enough of his BS to vote for it. That saddens me to the bone.

Growing up, there was a tapestry of the last supper, pics of Mother Mary, the sacred heart and JFK in our dining room. Add FDR to the lineup, and you would have been in my maternal grandparents’ dining room. On the other side, I’m the granddaughter of an immigrant. Sometimes, I can sense tremors from them spinning in their graves 400 miles away.

Yano how people get shorter as the get older? Same happens with mountains. The Appalachians are much older than the Rockies, therefore have shrunk like your Granny Mae.

Appendages crossed dot!

It would be interesting to see him and Nelson in a face off with an ice cube puck.

On top of the unsettling crap on the national front, my county is losing a major employer to closing, so there goes 700 good union jobs. In addition, Nissan, just 5 miles in the other direction, has announced layoffs / buyouts of ~1400 people at the plant down the road and about 25% of the corporate HQ in Nashville. Methinks hard times are coming for middle Tennessee.

I irked today and was bone tired with an aching back when I got home. I picked up a chicken wrap and some tots from Sonic for the need to feed, et and took a nap. Now, it’s entertaining a small reddish dog until bedtime.

Stay safe and healthy (yes, mentally too) y’all!
