[OLD] There's a Spring in Your Step - A Seasonal MMP

@SCAdian I can almost guarantee this is the case. Different prices, different things offered (or not) may vary by location.

Well, I’m gearing up for Long Night, might leave early so I can get a coffee - and maybe some kind of snack, a bagel perhaps? - on my way in.

Closing shift is ALL WOMEN I think that’s happened maybe once in all the time I worked here - there’s a lot of guys on the roster, useful since so many of our supplies are heavy - but it’s usually pretty fun and low drama when it’s just the gals, even if it’s briefly because the guys are on break. We get along.

Rained all night, and now it’s doing that “wintery mix” of snow and rain. Nothing is sticking, just the roads are wet.

We were kinda slowish last night (for a Friday) and heard there was a basketball game out of town involving the local high school.

The next game is supposed to be here, I think, in which case, we’re gonna get slammed.

Dammit, I was about to get up - guess who jumped into my lap & is purring and snuggling?

The Geek Squad guy just left.

He said the problem with the TV could be the main board, the power board, or the screen. He was concerned that he didn’t get any halos when he pressed on the screen, but he couldn’t definitely say the screen is bad. So repair might cost $150 for the main board plus $100 for labour ($250), or the same if it’s the power board. Or $400 to replace both boards. Or $1,000 to replace the screen. Or $1,400 to replace both boards and the screen. But here’s the catch: He won’t know for sure what’s wrong until he fixes something. The diagnostics pointed to any of those things.

Meanwhile, a 2022 model 4K Ultra HD TV X80K Series: LED Smart Google TV with Dolby Vision HDR costs $678, and a 2022 model 4K Ultra HD TV X85K Series: LED Smart Google TV with Dolby Vision HDR and Native 120HZ Refresh Rate costs $898. I don’t know if the 120 HZ refresh rate is worth an extra $210. The picture has always been fine on the TV we bought at the end of 1999.

Unfortunately, the Spousal Unit is out running errands. I’ll have to talk to her before deciding what to do. I could take the TV off the wall, somehow transport it to a repair place in Bellingham, and probably get it fixed there; but it would most likely cost the same as Geek Squad, with the added hassles of dismounting, transporting twice, and mounting. Either way, we’ll have a three-year-old TV. Or, if I buy a new one, we’ll have a new TV but a 65-inch TV that needs to be gotten rid of.

The last of the prednisone wore off, so I slept long and hard last night. Whew! My knee is stiff but not nearly as sore. If the itch gods let me tolerate the brace, I’ll try going for a short walk or two today. Right now laundry is doing the cha-cha in the washer. While it’s drying, I’ll clean out the freezer compartment.

True dat. My daughter works for a food bank. As you said, there’s been a big jump in the number of people getting food boxes and a lot of first-timers, so you’re not alone in how you feel. The way I see it, we all help each other out (or we should). Sometimes we’re the giver, sometimes we’re the receiver, and much of the time, we’re giving in one way–time, money, advice, labor–while we’re receiving in another. It’s not charity; it’s another way we connect with one another.

I’m going to steal that expression. Sorry about the hassles and bad food/service, but yay for meeting someone you admire!

Me, too, but I’m trying to be a bigger person, so now I merely avert my eyes and think about world peace.

I used to go to a restaurant in Wyoming that had hand-cut fries they served with bleu cheese dressing for dipping. I’d never have thought of that combo, but day-um, that was good.

red, OMG, now I want ALL of that! And I appreciate that they don’t put the calorie counts on the menu. Denial is yummier!

My more neurotic side wants to urge you and your colleagues to be VERY careful about security. Make sure someone’s got an eye on someone going outside for tasks like trash, walk to cars together after your shift, etc. There are more predatory types out there who would think a group of all women would be more vulnerable to robbery, etc.

I sprinkle malt vinegar on my fries when it is available

Do I get Brooklyn Bagel, and get a bagel with peanut butter, to go with my coffee?

Or Timmy Horton, and get an avocado toast (which, trendy as they are, I’ve never had - eaten my body weight in guac and straight-up avocado slices over thr years, tho) and maybe TimBits (donut holes) OMG WHAT DO I DOOOOOOOOO???

… first world problems FOR THE WIN!

This is always protocol no matter who’s working. Nobody leaves until everyone’s car is running.

I like this too. Said it in an email to my sister this morning.

Thank you all so much for your comments and discussion on my posts. It truly brings tears to my eyes how much you all care. This is a wonderful community!!! God bless you all.

Happy Birthday Miss Ariel :birthday:

what I do most days

oopsie very familiar with the acronym DMV due to college basketball and football. DeMatha Catholic seems to attract very elite athletes.

Last night Muskegon was in the Division 1 Semifinal which they won 65-42 over Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. The semis and championship game are held at the Breslin Center on the Michigan State campus. So, no, there won’t be any more high school basketball games in Muskegon until next fall. The championship game was today at 12:15 against Cass Tech. Unfortunately the Big Reds were not victorious. Final score Cass Tech 78 Muskegon 63. Although 2nd place in the State in the best division is no small thing. :basketball:

can’t do a trade-in? or have them haul it away when they install the new one?

Slept in until 10:30 due to getting to bed at 3:30 after Madison Chock and Evan Bates won the World Figure Skating Championship in the Dance division. Yay Maddy and Evan!!
the only thing I’ve got going on today is watching more figure skating, Men’s Championship, and I’m baking a blueberry pie from my favorite Blueberry Farm.

Good. Yes, I know I’m not your mom (dunno if I’m even old enough to be at 53), but I do care. I want you and your team to stay safe.

Got a late start today, gloomy day in philly. Ice cream for breakies, then 2 loads of laundry. Now I’m watching dyi and reno shows to get in the mood to get some things done.

I’m eating lunch, the pierogi/vareniki discussion here inspired me to get some Mrs t and am having that for lunch.

Fcm those are seriously cute younglings.

SWMBO said I should just order the new TV, which I’ve just done. Plus the 4-year protection plan.

She was shocked at how cheap the new TV is. She said her 26-inch Sylvania HD we’re watching in the meantime cost $400 when she bought it (probably a 15 or 20 years ago). She said, ‘I remember when my father would just fix the TV!’

I encountered someone once who said “Hope you have whatever kind of day you want.” Um, OK, fine. Whatever. It seemed a bit silly to me, especially coming from someone who didn’t know me and surely didn’t care what kind of day I had. Then again, I tend to be a grouch about stuff like that.

We ran some errands, had lunch at Salsa’s, and dropped off food at MIL’s. Chillage will now ensue. It’s dreary and chilly and just not a nice day, weather-wise. The first human who decided to live indoors was a freekin’ genius!!!

A SCAdian is a member of the SCA, and MetalMouse gave me that name based on my SCAdian (it’s also an adjective) activities.

Catsup/Ketchup doesn’t belong on anything I intend to eat.

Was over at a friend’s house one day, chatting in the kitchen while she fixed herself breakfast. She put the eggs on a plate, turned to me, and said, “You might want to leave the room – I’m going to put ketchup on this.”

Lady SCAdian and her mother.

Better than listening to political or religious arguments!

I might give you a weird look, but dipping them in mustard is nowhere near as bad as dipping them in <shudder> mayo. I want either salt & vinegar or salt & pepper on my fries.

“Have the day you deserve!”

43 now, with a high of 45, low of 41, and high tomorrow of 58. As predicted, the sky is falling. I’m sure that by now the skies have used up their quota for April showers, so next month should be nice and sunny.

Agreed. That stuff exists only to entice toddlers to eat their meat and perhaps get some pudding afterwards.

I like me a plate of fried eggs smashed up with ketchup and grape jelly with a side of toasted white bread.

I take 20 mg of melatonin a night, not for sleep but because my oncologists want me to. There might be a relstionship between melatonin and decreased breast cancer risk, so why the hell not? I fall asleep for 15-30 minutes, then wake up quite thoroughly, then get back to sleep, wake up for 2-3 hours, then more or less fall back asleep. I don’t care for it, but I don’t care for a lot of the medications and supplements I take.

Happy sattiday everyone!

We were going to drive down to Madras and look at a house down there today. We love our little house and our little town, but it has some disadvantages. The house we were going to look at was all on one level, a couple of blocks from the hospital and about 6 blocks from the aquatic center. It was a nice house too, and well priced. This be it.
Wifey called this morning to make an appointment, and it was sold. But somebody just hadn’t tagged it as such.
Oh well.

I don’t care what you put on your food, as long as you don’t care what I put on mine. Heck, I’ve been married for 33+ years to a woman who puts horseradish sauce on steak, and catsup on her eggs. And people tell me I’m weird for not liking mustard on pastrami or corned beef. Y’all do whatever floats yer boat.

Would you Polish type peoples look at this and tell me, is it Polish, and does it say “Happy Birthday” or somesuch? I bought it at a garage sale years ago for some unknown reason. Probably just 'cause I liked it, but never knew what it was. My ancestors were all English and Irish, and one Czech, on my mother’s side. On my father’s side, who knows. He never told the same story twice.

Doesn’t matter, I’m keeping it, but we are curious.

Back from the Polish celebration. A lively event, with singing in the language and traditional food for sale like bigos (hunter’s stew), kielbasa, etc. We didn’t stay for the drowning of Marzanna. I’m assuming winter will end with or without it.

In a bit of a coincidence, Wifey found a couple of big hot dogs in the freezer and we had chili dogs for lunch. Dennison’s chicken chili with beans. Oddly the Dennison’s was only 10.5 ounces. The can of Hormel’s beef chili (with beans) I also found was 15 ounces. Wifey decided that 10.5 ounces was sufficient for two dogs, so that’s what we did. We had shredded cheddar with. We discussed chopping up some onion, but eventually didn’t bother.
So there you have it.

Howdy again y’all! We achieved nappage and general sloth along with day drinkin’ on the back porch. It rained a little and TWPTB keep sayin’ we’ll have more. We shall see. On the plus side the weather is nice enough we opened da cave windows for some fresh air. Nice!

WetOne Happy Bday to Ariel! May all her horsey bday wishes come true.

There is no shame in acceptin’ food boxes. If you need it, well, that’s what it’s for. I am glad we have food banks and so forth for folks who need food.

Using my handy-dandy translator (since I only recognized “w” as on and “dniu urodzin” as birthday), it translates to “heartfelt wishes on your birthday” I should have caught onto “serdeczne” as related to the heart, but I’m still thinking primarily in English and don’t have all of the Polish solid in my head yet.

Thanks, both of you. I hadn’t thought of it much that way, just the “my husband as a PhD, surely there are people more in need than we are” mindset that having been middle class means. I’ve got to remember that middle class isn’t nearly what it used to be and that the gap between the haves and have-nots seem to be getting bigger every day.

shoe, I asked BtY if he felt bad about me getting hurt and his reply was “kinda”. I know that, thanks to his ASD/ADHD/Alphabet Soup that he processes things far differently than I do but sometimes I despair that he’ll really understand what empathy is. At least, however, he did accept responsibility when I asked him if he understood that his actions caused me to get hurt. That’s a step up for him.

After ice, Advil and rest, my knee is feeling a lot better. My arms feel like I’ve been carrying 100 pounds of wiggling toddler in them. Not sure why, unless they got wrenched when I fell. By tomorrow, though, I’m expecting to be back to normal.

Well, as normal as I ever get anyway.

Now I should probably go rewash the towels that I’d put in the washer yesterday CtE was supposed to switch for me while I was out with BtY for a medical study.

You are the sort of person who made me nutz when I was a food stamp worker. I was being paid 8 hours a day to give people food, it was important work and I was happy to do it.

Every single day I would talk to someone who was so ashamed and embarrassed at losing their job, getting sick, having a SO other leave or die or whatever horrible things happened, that they would wait until there was no food in their house and their utilities were going to be turned off before coming to the office and they would still apologize for it. It made me nutz, I was part of the safety net society provides and it was my job to help.

Sorry if that didn’t make enough sense, but please do not feel any shame about asking for help. You’ve done your part and will again.

Plus. I had to wear a bra to work every day. Many of those folks who work and volunteer at food banks and surplus distribution centers put bras on to go to work. Don’t make them waste it!!!
