(Old) Things ya gotta 'splain in the MMP

FCMom, my reservations about Phillips screws center on the “cam-out” problem. Go past a certain amount of torque, and the bit will jump out of the screw. From the designer’s viewpoint, this is a feature, not a bug. In initial assembly, it keeps the assembler from stripping out the hole. In real, post-assembly, life, rust happens. Attempting to remove the screw, even with penetrating oil (WD40), involves lots of pressure and swearing. Straight-slot screws don’t cam-out, but the straight bit is not self-centering.

So, you pays your money, and you takes your choice. There are also “plus-or-minus” screws, that can be installed with a Phillips bit for speed, but backed out with a straight bit for torque.

Good morning. I got to sleep in a bit this morning. I took the day off to help get the gym set up for the Band Banquet tonight, and not part of thr general strike at all. Unfortunately, I set the timer on the coffee maker before going to bed, so now I have to sit here and enjoy a cuppa and watch the finch family before I walk.

Hell, I’m barely one of my tribe, but I would see you as a supporter. I’ve had a Franklin Pride pin in my hoodie, next to my pink and orange ribbons[1] for a while. Last fall, at a football game, I had another parent stop me and tell me how much it meant to her and her son to see a dad wearing a pride pin.

My extensive experience with clogged toilets[2] indicates you should be fine as long as the water goes down quickly.

Nope! I’m going to self-sabotage and not feeling worthy, and there’s nothing you can do to stop me! { maniacal laughing } I need to work on my evil plotting.

Thank you for the reminder! I would have been disappointed with myself if I absentmindedly spent money today that was optional. Instead I’ll immerse myself in grandchildren all day instead. More fun anyway.

I’ll be back later to finish scolding Jane about her shoulder-the final word so to speak.

Morning all. Got nearly 8 hours of eye-shut and will shortly head out for the great Firday shopping trip (sorry about the strike, but just ate my last frozen pancakes without syrup and that is a bridge too far…). 53F going to 71F and no rain forecast so mowage will probably occur later this day, as my lawn is decidedly shaggy-looking. Otherwise will continue to get re-organized and back to something resembling normal life.

BBBoo, enjoy the grandkids.

Mollie, happy for the euphoria you are feeling and the support you are getting, but there will be bumps in the road, so be aware of them. And yes, I am a party-pooper, why do you ask  , but just keep on a steady course and keep up the counseling. (exit wise old Dad mode…)

shoe, in my travels, I have seen Mexican restaurants in odd places, like Delft, Netherlands. Around here any restaurant that closes usually becomes a Mexican restaurant eventually.

Jumpy, as one who has had his share of plumbing woes, I concur with Mollie, if it’s running don’t mess with it. Might check your water meter to see if water is still flowing when your not using it (been my go to when I have problems), but in general it ought to be ok, I think).

And time for the big refrigerator restockage run. Have a good Firday all.

Good morning.

It’s 49F and mostly sunny out. By afternoon, it’s projected to be mostly cloudy with a daytime high of 75F.

Filbert, sending best thoughts for your Dad. I hope all is going well.

Jane, I’m on the “Do it Now!” bus.

I need a pedicure and was thinking of getting one today because I forgot about the general strike. I guess I’ll need to rethink it.

I fueled up the other day and gulped hard since I only had 10 cents off per gallon. I usually have a dollar off, but I had to fuel up sooner than usual due to the trip down south to help my son move, along with the back-and-forth driving around here.

We’ll be heading to my son’s place late tomorrow morning or early afternoon. We’re taking the dogs, too. This ride in the Jeep will be longer than they’re accustomed to. Hopefully, they’ll calm down relatively quickly. I’ve been trying to figure out how I’ll transport a flower basket with the pups in the Jeep, and I’ve decided I’ll sit in the back seat, with the basket in front. Maisie will sit in the way back of the Jeep, but Buster likes to jump into the back seat. By sitting the back seat, I can keep him from trying to get to the front.

And, yes. We used to restrain them with straps attached to the rings in the cargo area or to the back seat belts, but they would get themselves all tangled up. I would prefer to transport them in kennels, but I can’t fit two large enough for them in the back of the Jeep.

My next line of thought is to install a separator in the back cargo area so Buster can’t jump into the back seat. I dunno, we’ll see.

Alrighty, time for more coffee. You all take care.

I figure, sticking to locally owned and operated businesses was okay.

Shortly after I moved to Tennessee, I had to go to northern Indiana for a funeral. I started home on two hours sleep and about three hours down the road, after hitting the rumble strip for the third time, I pulled over at a Motel 6 for some shut eye. No way did I want to wind up a wet spot on I65 south.

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. After that, I’ll take out the trash.

It began raining around midnight last night and rained most of the night. I suited Nelson and I up for the morning TCB. It’s stopped now and is supposed to get chilly (~50 ferrets) for the weekend.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Morning, all. JtC, do it now. If it helps to have a sister in misery, I’m not allowed to take a bath for at least 6 weeks, and my evening bath with a book is both a daily pleasure and important for managing physical symptoms like scar contracture.

Thanks for the good wishes, not much update so far- did get one message from Dad claiming to be OK, but it wasn’t very convincing.. Sounds like they’ll be keeping him in for at least a week, but they’ve basically moved him down one care level, which they said would be after 1-2 days if all was going well, so hopefully that’s a good sign.

I don’t think I can make it down this weekend to visit; it’s a holiday weekend so all the trains are even more expensive than normal, and the roads will be packed with caravans… plus I have a deadline on Monday.

I messed up (minorly) yesterday. I maintain the database for the Band Flag subscription[1]. Yesterday, I sent out the Final Notice for the subscriptions that ended last Veterans’ Day. Unfortunately, I sent it to the subscribers whose last day in Memorial Day. So far only one person has noticed.

  1. You give us $60, and we put up a flag in front of your house for five holidays. ↩︎

I was in the Mez again, which less chaotic than yesterday. I’l bee up there permanantly now because:
Company: cuts PM clerks who fix bad addresses, dumps work on Preload.
Preload: scrambles to do work during shift, even with 2 ex PM clerks
Preload head: moves ex PM clerks to 0100-0400 to do the work.
So basically the company has played musical chairs, with out cutting out any chairs. This is why I drink gin.
I stopped at Teeter after work for salmon, seltzer, and mint for the Mint Julep for tomorrow’s Kentucky Derby. Laundry is sloshing, and Spot is sacked out on his cat tree.

“juniper tea”

Like this?

(note the flawless waterproof mascara)
(also, you’re not an imposter, you’re the best Mollie out there)

It’s only 48F at 1130, but not much of a breeze and okay in the sun. Did exercise, then took a short walk with a guy who lives down the hall. We’re both Navy veterans and think somewhat alike from what I gather from the brief conversations we’ve had. He’s 84 and had a couple of bouts with cancer, so is trying to get himself back in decent working order. Walking is so much easier when you’re not alone.

Nothing else on the agenda today, other than paying the rent.

red - my stupid driving days were also my very broke days, hence not stopping at a hotel. These days, long drives are halved to include a night at Holiday Inn, or whatever, en route.

We cleaned and organized the boat, dumped trash, loaded stuff to go home in the car, and FCD is fixing the plumbing while I hand him stuff. Action photo on FB.

Back to work…

Shopping is done, the refrigerator is stuffed and the cupboards are filled, but my pockets are pretty empty. Everything is in it’s proper place and Cheese Dogs have been consumed for lunch, so will head outside to perform mowage here in a bit. Cloudy and only 64F, so at least better than mowage in 90F summer heat.

Taters , one reason for shopping today was I needed the Kroger points for my next fillup which will probably be this week, and even with $1.60/gallon savings, I still doubt I’ll be happy with the result.

Nut, will still keep my fingers crossed, but that he could message you grumbling about it is a good sign.

Cookie, did a lot of walking on my trip, sometimes with others and also alone. ONly problem is that there are way too many sweet shops in towns in Spain and Portugal…

And need to finish up some internettin’ and then get about mowage. Take care all.

Oh crap, thanks for the reminder!

Sounds like an excuse to paint your nails with the school colors. My dad goes with my mom to get his toenails done and he decided that he might as well have fun with it. He’s had green and blue, purple and gold, just fluorescent orange, and even black and orange for Halloween.

This week was plumbing woes, but preventative. Had to have the plumber come and remove the shower fixtures so the tile guy could repair the grout, and then the plumber guy had to come back to reinstall the fixtures. And that was three different days, so very disruptive for working.

And we got the payment slip for what we owe to the US treasury. Ouch. Very ouch. The exchange rate isn’t helping much either. So I paid that and have one month’s reprieve before I have to pay the estimated tax for first half 2026. Uff da.

Nut, I hope your dad improves. :people_hugging:

Makes no sense to me today.

That’ll be quite enough of that, young lady!

As the man says, Git 'r done!

lager had a vet visit this morning. i am concerned about him… he is months way from 18 and is acting like an old man. his blood sugar was up, could be stress. he was fairly good at the vet. that is concerning. i did cuddle him more today. usually i let him walk around when talking to the vet. today i cuddled him. he growled and grumbled, but didn’t hiss as much and didn’t strike out.

i don’t think he is on the bridge onramp, but heading in the direction. i think he has several miles to go. we will see what the tests say. lager, as usual, is giving me the cold tail.

Temu is a website that sells various items at a deep discount and corresponding lack of quality.

KISS was (is?) a band known for elaborate makeup.

Runny mascara would make one look like a cheap knockoff of a band member.

Long Night shift tonight. After last night’s “surprise!” staying late, I am unenthusiastic.

I feel like I live under a rock, but can you - or anyone else - explain this one to me?

But… but… they say you can shop like a billionaire!! Surely billionaires wouldn’t purchase low quality items! So it must all be primo quality, right? Right???

Back home - some boat plumbing repairs will have to be made - things leaked that shouldn’t have leaked. It’ll be tended to on Sunday. Tomorrow we’ll be tearing down the rotted deck. I hope. We shall see.

Meanwhile, I’ve gotten laundry started - late, of course. Not sure what the rest of the evening will hold - much chillage, I suppose.
