(Old) Tricks, treats, and a brand new month in the MMP

Morning all. A cool 37F this morning, but heading to 68F this afternoon. The soccer tournament starts this weekend, I referee at 6:00pm and coach at 7:15pm tonight, and then tomorrow gets busy… Want to do the final mowage of the year today, will let it get a bit warmer before that and will try to get swimming and sauna in if I can.

Sensei, food sounds good. As for the rain, only place I lived overseas was Abu Dhabi, where we got maybe 4 inches of rain a year, usually in 1-2 cloudbursts. Didn’t need much protection there.

FCM, I drink my Pepsi Zero/Diet Pepsi on ice all the time; for some reason colder and slightly diluted seems to taste better to me. And happy B-Day to FCD.

OK, need to do the morning internetting and watch the temperature climb to mowage-levels. Take care all and have a good Firday.

Got an appointment in about an hour to move some money into a 5% 6-month certificate. After earning a whopping buck anna half on savings (something like .1% or something) we decided to take some of our savings and let it earn a bit more. Worst case if we need to pull it out is we lose the interest.

That’s this morning’s big excitement.

Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 11c/52f with no predicted change, and mostly cloudy. Weather app says “This is a pretty fucking nice day, if you’re emo.” It’s pretty good out there, we have some clouds in the sky and some sun, Storm Ciaran has swept through without as much fuss as we’d expected so it’s all good in this part of the world.

Sensei 'im indoors has been making tortillas recently, he’s getting the hang of it but still thinks he can do better.

Moooom I drink my diet cola at room temperature at home, it almost always comes with ice if I order it when we’re out somewhere. Happy birthday to FCD, I hope he enjoys the celebrations and doesn’t have people singing at him if he doesn’t like it.

Real Fish I’m sorry about the family thing, that’s really depressing.

Boo sorry to hear you’ve been surrounded by snuffles and sneezes. Hope the tests are negative!

Nothing exciting so far in my day. Yesterday brought more of the usual travel trauma, my train from campus was 14 minutes late so definitely no chance of making my connection at the Big City Station, and 14 minutes is just inside the limit for making a claim for the delay. It was miserable, wet and windy when I got back to my local station so I braved the Great Unwashed and caught the bus home.

Today was better, although all the trains were either late or cancelled this morning due to overhead power cable problems. Managed to get from the Local Station to the Big City Station in time for one of the nicer trains out to campus so neither early nor late today.

I’m going out tonight so of course I need to be home in good time, and that guarantees that the Travel Gods will be laughing at me all the way back.

BooFae - in your travels via train and bus, do you have something like a monthly pass or do you buy a ticket every time?

Good morning.

It’s 54F and soggy outside. The expected high is about 60F, and it’ll be soggy on and off most of the day. So, we’re experiencing typical November weather for the wet side of Washington state.

It became pretty breezy yesterday, and there were several pockets all up and down the Puget Sound corridor that lost power due to the winds.

FCM, Happy Birthday to FCD! I am sorry to hear about your BiL. I am glad your MiL is being sensible about not flying out there.

real fish, I am sorry about your family troubles.

I eat ice cream in summer, winter, spring, or fall.

J-Bats, fingers crossed on the job.

Today is my RDO, but I’m not sure what I will do. I may do some heavy (I keep typing heaving for some reason) cleaning. This is mainly because I feel restless and need to burn off some energy. I thought about visiting the Humane Society, but I’m not ready yet. I know my husband is; but I can’t do it. I see a couple of dogs down there that I’d be interested in, but one of them is a puppy (under two years), and they charge a lot for them. Pups have $500.00 adoption fees, no matter the breed.

Well, I hear the husband moving around upstairs, so my quiet time is ending, dang it.

Everyone take care.

And, of course, since it’s a joint account, I can’t get a certificate without FCD being present. So I rebooked for Moanday morning.

And when I first started my car, it did the same rough-running-ABS-light trick as yesterday. I turned it off, sat a few seconds, then it started just fine. So as soon as FCD gets back from Lowe’s, we’re going to see Paul. I may not have the money for this certificate after all…

:sob:

JBats, that sounds like a dream job. Appendages crossed.

Sorry about your family woes fishy. The holiday season tends to magnify those.

Happy birthday toFCD!

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, bed stripped, towels / sheets in the dryer, jeans in the wash and everything else on deck. Other than the usual Friday chores, today will be spent messing around.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Paul has my car. He said it might not be too stoopit expensive. Let’s all cross our fingers.

Stoopit car.

Going to try for 3-4 hours of writing today, plus some house tasks. Shower, tea, heat, here I come.

Thanks~I’ll test the second time before I go over to my daughter’s for my traditional Sunday Sacred Day Of Grandma’s Here! play with Harriet and Sorenson. Last thing I want to do is to bring the plague to them.

I may have to start wearing a good K94 face mask to class during the winter months. I hate trying to teach in a face mask, these English language learners need to see your mouth as they are trying to learn pronunciation and speech sounds but I also am high risk and need to survive to teach (and Grandma) another day. ‘Tis a conundrum.

At least I’m vaccinated to within an inch of my life~flu+covid+RSV within the past 6 weeks.

Light heaving. I was on the 200 Slide, and I was last out. at 0930(guess the PT sups forgot to hide stuff for me). Also, is it bad that every time i see a Blueberry, I laugh, Emperor Palpatine style? : evil space wizard emoji :

Ha one tree split in two due to an ice storm like that.

{{{{RealFish}}}, sorry your family isn’t doing right by you.

 :birthday: :champagne:HAPPY BIRTHDAY FCD!!!:champagne: :birthday:

Grrr! The furnace guy was supposed to be here 40 minutes ago. I’ve got enough stress today what with the fundraiser this evening.

Afternoon all. Let it be noted that the last mowage of my yard for 2023 took place on November 3rd. And in an unexpected burst of activity, I also raked/swept all the leaves that had gathered at my curb and bagged them up. Am waiting now for the Cook’s guy to get here to do my pest control check, may end being too late to get the swimming in, but since I referee and coach outside in the 50F weather tonight, guess that will burn the calories for me. Plus tonight is Big Bowl O’Sallit night, so not a ton of caloric intake there.

FCM, did the same thing you did about two months ago for the same reason. Still have a reserve in my savings account, but looking forward to earning something higher than 0.38 cents a month… Hope the car doesn’t eat up those savings.

Boo fae, I like train travel, but a daily dose of what you go through might be a bit much. Hope the Travel Gods caught another train.

Stay healthy BBBoo.

VanGo, still waiting on the Cook’s guy. Called the office and they messaged him to give me a call, still nothing. Such is life.

OK, back to trundling thought the Internet. Take care all.

We did the same thing, only I went to a money market fund. If you have a brokerage account, you can invest your money in one. They’re quite safe, but not 100% safe like a CD. The advantage is that the interest pays monthly, and you can cash them out at any time without penalty. Mine is paying 5.24% annually (SWVXX).

I just went out and had an Indian lunch at a new fast food place. It was okay, but not great. I’m glad I found out. I also shopped for some Asian groceries at 99 Ranch - I got Spanish peanuts, Chinese cashew cookies, Szechwan peppercorns, and tofu.

I decided to look up the value of my car to help decide how much I’m willing to spend to repair it. The range from various sites for trade-in to private seller runs from $800 t0 $3200. The 211000 miles is what kills it. But to replace it with a newer Sonata could run $25K or more, depending on the trim, and even used ones with low miles are over $20K. Dammit. We’ll see what Paul has to say.

On the plus side, my dermatologist says everything looks good, so I’ve got that going for me.

On to do more automotive research. Dammit.

Happy Friday, everyone! I lurked yesterday: I read everything, and started to draft a post at one point but eventually abandoned it. For some reason I just felt like reading vs typing.

I’m rougly 1 hour away from having the next 9 days off! Woo hoo! All of the coordination is done, handoffs have been completed, etc. I just have my weekly report to finish writing, and I’m waiting to see if a report I edited can be approved soon so I can send it to the customer before I log off.

Next week will be on the busy side, but this weekend should be relatively quiet. I’m looking forward to it. Tomorrow I have a personal training session at 10am (the last make-up session…until I skip Tuesday’s session ), and Sunday morning I’ll be going to the mall to look for a dress coat. Thursday’s funeral at Arlington National Cemetery will be largely outdoors, and even though it’s supposed to be 70°F and sunny I’ll want to wear a nice coat. It’s an excuse to finally get one (I don’t dress up often, plus I’m not much of a coat person, but over the years there have been enough times when I wished I had a nice dress coat). If my BFF is feeling up to it, she’ll join me for shopping and lunch. Other than those two things, though, I have no plans for the weekend. I’m hoping to do some reading, and maybe some more holiday LEGO building.

I take Bailey to a Dogtopia for daycare and boarding. Fingers crossed on the interview!

Howdy Y’all! I went to the Pig and bought two big bunches of collard greens. They had a deal, so I decided to go ahead and buy ‘em for Turkey Day. They are now all cleanded and in da freezer. That was a couple hours work cleanin’. So that was the big activity of the day. Nappage, day drinkin’, and the eatage of majik intartoobz pizza and sallit were the other activities of the day. The big fancy luncheon that was on tap for Sunday has been postponed a week due to at least nine people in the congregation comin’ down with Covid. I can’t help but wonder if’n last Sattidy’s big doin’s over to the church house (trunk or treat and an Oktoberfest sup that we did not attend) has anything to do with this.

MOOOOOOM sorry about the car woes. Hope it’s not too bad. Happy Bday to FCD. Y’all may not know this, but FCD is two years younger that MOOOOOOM. She’s a cradle robber!

Boo hope you do avoid the plague.

VanGo and MetalMouse hope the furnace and pest control folks showed up at a reasonable time.

I have tried makin’ tortillas in the past but was never satisfied with the results. Thus, I rely on sto’ bought ones.

oopsie, enjoy the time off that isn’t part of the funeral.

CasaRoja is cleaneded up, laundry done, new keys made for Sis, SIL and niece (I hadn’t replaced them since my lock was changed and somebody has to be able to get in to take care of Nelson if I got hit by a bus), prescriptions picked up and groceries bought.

Nelson got to meet Linc on our walk this afternoon. I talked to my boy like I did when I taught him not to bark at Sugar next door (she’s leery of small dogs), so he didn’t get in Linc’s face. I hope that they become good neighbors.

Moooooom, I hope that your car is an easy fix. Mine has an appointment next Friday, since the engine light came on. The gas mileage has sucked since, so I’m expecting an O2 sensor.

during mom’s last stint of living in IN after living here in CA in the very early 80s, she had to make her own tortillas because unless you went to little hole-in-the-wall Hispanic stores that only were open when the temporary farm help came through almost no one even knew what fresh tortillas were until taco bell started using them for soft tacos

It is one of those things that looks easy but takes forever to master

she used to make her own tortilla chips too …saved the Little League concession stand a couple of times

I picked up about a million pine cones and swept up a sh*t ton of pine needles. That windstorm left a huge mess. I quit after doing the front porch, walkway, and side walkway. FCM would have had all of it done and the doorknob polished in half the time, plus she’s nice, dammit.

Taters, glad you didn’t lose power! Also…

Come on up! Do I have a fun job for you! You’re not allergic to pine needles, are you?

I bet they were so cyuuuute! I love seeing little kids in their costumes. I hope you can get some medical answers soon. And I’m sorry about your mom. I don’t know what her issues are, but it’s always hard to get unwarranted criticism from our mothers. If she were still alive, I’d offer to share my mom with you. She was very accepting, and she’d have dismissed your mom with “Well, she has problems.” (She wouldn’t have understood the poly stuff, but she’d have said, “As long as she’s happy.”)

CatGlove, did you go to a parochial school? November 1st was a day off for us, and we felt smug as the public school kids trudged past, worn out from trick-or-treating. plus Mom taught at a public school, and, as I may have said, hid the communal candy bowl. My brother was always able to sniff it out, though. We only had a few pieces each, though, lest Mom get suspicious.

You can’t have too many dumplings. The world would be a better place with more dumplings. When I become Empress, I shall make you Minister of Dumplings.

FCM, I forgot to say how adorable the grands were in that photo. And there’s something about Roxy that makes me think “future President of the US.” She looks so smart and so…definite. I hope the car fix isn’t too expensive. And Happy Birthday to your sweetie!

Boo, I hope you succeed in keeping the Covid away. Is there any way you could video yourself saying the vocabulary words you’re working on that day? Just a thought, and probably a crazy one.

Swampy, I’m glad you and OYKW avoided the activities that turned out to be (maybe) super-spreaders.

I’ve made tortillas before. They’re definitely easier with a tortilla press (which I no longer have). The taste and texture are infinitely better than the store kind, but it’s not worth making them for one person. My DIL makes great tortillas, so I get my fix there.
