Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 15c/59f with a predicted high of 16c/60f and cloudy. Weather app says “I’m completely fucking apathetic with this merely fucking so-so day.”
Did you manage to find someone? If I was close by, I’d be there like a shot!
That’s not great advice from the bank either, I would have expected them to offer immediate card cancellation at the very least.
That must be what OYKW sees in him!
hippie I saw your quilt pics on FB, it’s an exquisite piece of work.
shoe sounds like you had a week of nights all stuffed into one ![]()
Yesterday was nice and quiet, I worked at home and got quite a bit done. 'im indoors made dinner, we watched a film, and I was in bed reasonably early. That meant I was also up quite early for a Saturday, had a couple of cups of tea, tended to the needs of cats, and took myself off to the gym. It was much quieter than usual for a Saturday, but that’s good beause I managed to get a good chest/back session done. My plan was to go early so I could spent as much time as I needed there, and still get home before the roads around my area were closed.
Today is our local Pride festival which as a big parade through the town centre and then finishes up at the park round the corner from us where there’s all sorts of entertainment going on until mid-evening, when shuttle buses will take folks back into town to continue partying the night away. The Giffard has a special night of Pride-related things going on, they had already started decorating inside when we were there on Thursday. Mollie I hope you have a great day at Pride, and I really hope your toe allows you to wear those fabulous shoes!
For those following along at home, I have a little TM tale for you that’s related to the mystery of the disappearing M&Ms. Bear in mind they disappeared while five of us were out of the office at a meeting so that left TM and potentially four other people in the room. The disappearance was noticed when we returned from our meeting, and the Overthinker immediately started saying she was now worried about leaving anything else in the office when she wasn’t there. She also commented that we’d had a similar disappearance of chocolate when we were in the office upstairs, and she thought it was probably the cleaners. Note, she didn’t accuse the cleaners of theft, nor did she say at any point that she begrudged them having anything. We had a spare desk upstairs where we usually left things like chocolate, sweets, cake and biscuits so absolutely anyone who came in could help themselves, and that includes the academic staff.
The following day, there were only three of us in the office from my team, both the Overthinker and PUP were working at home. TM launched into a diatribe about how unfair it was that the Overthinker accused the cleaners of stealing, and thereby overtly accused anyone who was in the office the day before of the theft of M&Ms. She reminded me several times that she’s diabetic and can’t eat such things (despite also saying that she has sweets at home which she does eat), then she said it was very unfair that she had to be in an office where there was a constant supply of tempting food that she had to avoid. I decided not to mention that two members of the English Lit team are also diabetic but were very appreciative of our communal treats (which they had been told they were welcome to indulge in).
On Friday, she turned up with a massive bag of chocolates, chocolate bars, fairy cakes and other things (none of which she could eat herself) and announced that she had brought them in because it wasn’t fair that everyone had to suffer over the M&Ms debacle. I resisted the urge to mention the fact that she’d just spent half a day complaining about the presence of chocs in the office, and then made it ten times worse! The sensible thing, of course, was to thank her for her generosity!
I told her if it was me I’d close the account and get a different bank, as that’s the worst advice from a bank I’ve ever heard..
It is hard to say. Possibly 80 to 100
Mor… oh, it’s afternoon all.
For anyone following my weekend plans, the slobbing won out. I woke up really late, probably as it’s all overcast and wet the sun didn’t wake me. While I’m not sorry for the extra sleep, the good bakery would likely be sold out by the time I got there, certainly of their fancy breads I like most.
I’m compromising be doing some house defilthifying and laundry and stuff, and I may pop out later, or tomorrow, to get the goood strawberries Unlike the bakery, the goood strawberry place is open Sundays, so I may just potter in the garden if there are sufficient gaps in the rain.
I still have some unwanted sycamore saplings to take out before they get any bigger- plus I want to take out a couple of very ugly shrubs planted by the previous owners, as I have a more interesting plant to go in that spot. I did go to take one out yesterday evening, but a couple of blackbirds with beaks full of wriggly things started shouting at me. I suspect they’re nesting in the bush right next to it- it’s too small for a nest itself- so I may need to leave that one a while.
Nice… purple rectangle with ‘Content not viewable in your region’ Hippie… grumbles in British…
We were at WallyWorld the other day, and they had a big display of those and their other new flavour, baked beans with pickles. The apple pie beans sounded good, so I grabbed a tin; the pickle beans, not so much. They were actually quite good, and I think I’ll get a couple more tins next time we’re there. Lady SCAdian was thinking about adding a bit of mango chutney to them, or perhaps curry powder, to see how the combination worked.
I’ve never seen any of those.
Mor… oh, it’s afternoon all.
It’s morning somewhere!
Morning all. Up about 6:30, referee soccer from 9:30a-1:00p, and then probably sloth the balance of the day. Another hot (86F for the high) and dry day, but rain due tomorrow.
Bright Tree, you have quite the wildlife variety there; we get chipmunks and the very occasional raccoon around here. Lots of birds, but they tend to stay in the forested area next to me so I hear them but don’t often see them.
Doggio, curious, how well does that ‘Bug-A-Salt’ gun work and does Spot object to either the bugs or the gun?
Shoe, never liked mushrooms on anything, but guess they are a taste lots of pizza-lovers acquire. Glad you made points with B.T., hopefully they will remember it next time things get frantic. And quite the adventure with the mouse…who ran from salvation right into the jaws of death…seems like a story told often about us humans, too…
swampy, happy food-making.
FCM, happy boating.
boo fae, TM sounds like an…interesting personality, in the same way as the so-called Chinese curse “May you live in Interesting Times…”.
Nut, happy gardening, albeit it sounds more likeheavy labor to me.
ANd need to finish the morning internettin’ and climb into my referee uniform. Have a good Sattiday all.
how well does that ‘Bug-A-Salt’ gun work
We had one of those when I worked the BBQ joint, although we didn’t have cockroaches from hell palmetto bugs, just little flies.
During slow times, the teenage boys took turns shooting each other at point-blank range and laughing maniacally.
being sent to Rodent Jesus by a mini panther.
This was a very elegant phrase.
have you ever raised mice? How does that work if a wild one get in?
For about five minutes. Mice are a PITA and Pretzel quickly outgrew them anyway.
But I’m sure mixing wild & domesticated anything is a Bad Idea.
I’d close the account and get a different bank, as that’s the worst advice from a bank I’ve ever heard..
Same, that “bank” sounds like a financial mess just waiting to happen.
ran from salvation right into the jaws of death
Also elegantly phrased.
Good morning.
It’s 48F and a bit damp outside. It’s been raining off and on throughout the night and morning so far. , that is quite the wildlife menagerie. When I first moved out here on the hill, I had freThe showers will continue, along with some thunderboomers, and our forecasted daytime high will only reach 56F.
Looks like no gardening or mowing will occur today. I planned to mow yesterday, but it started raining earlier than anticipated, so now it’ll have to wait.
Bright Tree, I used to see deer and foxes in my yard frequently. There were also frequent bear and cougar sightings, although not in my yard. As this area has developed, larger wildlife have retreated. So, too, the tree frogs. They used to live in my hanging baskets at my first house. I haven’t heard a tree frog in my neighborhood in over twenty years.
I get the bunnies, and I have plenty of birds (hawks, an occasional eagle, many types of songbirds, and hummingbirds) that come through, but the opossums have vacated as well. Squirrels are ever-present, too.
Hippie, the quilt is quite beautiful.
Shoe, what a night!
Mollie, I hope all goes well at Pridefest.
Oopsie, I’m glad the move went well and that it was quicker than expected. I hope the couch arrives when expected, too.
Lily, we paid an exorbitant price for those Firefly Petunias. I hadn’t heard of them either. But my husband saw them and picked them out. I wouldn’t have purchased them, myself, but he was excited about them. They do not work as advertised, and fortunately, I kept mine in a hanging basket, so I don’t have to worry about them self-seeding on the pavers below.
Other than cleaning the kitchen and sweeping the floor, I was in full sloth-mode yesterday. I will have to make up for it today. Since I can’t get anything done outdoors, I can concentrate on the indoor areas without feeling the pull of the garden.
With that, I suppose I should get things started. Please take care of yourselves.
Good morning and happy Pride! I got up bright and early and made sure I had everything I needed in the Highlander. I then loaded a roller cooler with cold water and ice pack and loaded that in the car. I slathered on sunscreen, ordered breakfast, and headed out.
A couple of volunteers showed up shortly after I did, and we raised the tent, hung our banner, and set up out table.
One of the volunteers told me about her trans daughter, so I told her about Mollie. She and her husband are currently getting some coffee.
I’m currently sitting on my cooler. Who has two thumbs and forgot her lawn chairs? This gal!

Mollie I hope you have a great day at Pride, and I really hope your toe allows you to wear those fabulous shoes!
The toe is fine now.
shoe I’m sorry your shift was shit. I’ll send good vibes your way.
But I’m sure mixing wild & domesticated anything is a Bad Idea.
I’ve heard it’s an issue for pet rats, especially if you have girl rats. Cage bars are no barrier to love, when you’re a rat, and rats do not follow Jane Austin era views on social status- something straight out the sewer is apparently a fine suitor, even for a well-brought up gentlerat. Half-wild babies are often quite healthy, but apparently never normally get friendly.
I have ripped out two large sycamore trees and am debating heading out for some more. I’m now too muddy to go to the shops. I could get changed, but all my normal clothes are drying, because I didn’t think this through very well and I don’t have many clothes that fit right now.
Happy pride! Our local event is later in the month.
Same, that “bank” sounds like a financial mess just waiting to happen.
Yeah, I’m no financial whiz (far from it), but there are some things that should be blindingly obvious. I’m really surprised by how little a lot of people here know about finance, investment, the scams perpetrated on same, and who are willing to fall for almost anything. I guess some of these folks are so lonely that they will answer any phone call. For me, if they’re not in my contacts list, they won’t hear my voice.
We got none of the thunderstorm activity forecast for last evening, and it’s a sunny day heading into the upper 80s today; probably into the 90s about mid-week, so here’s hoping the AC cooperates.
Gotta make a store run for milk (for the wife; I can’t drink it) and some fruit a little later. I was going to make pancakes today, but it doesn’t fit in with my new diet regimen and sugar really raises hell with my gut. So it was oatmeal and eggs this morning.
Morning!
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, puppers tended to and fixing to do KP. The biggest thing on the agenda today is a quick run home for more meds and a swing through the grocery store for something for supper.
Stay safe and healthy!
Well, I hit my first move-related snag this morning. In the grand scheme it isn’t a big deal, but it annoyed the crap outta me for a bit: my new couch arrived at a little after 9am, but I had to turn the truck away (and reschedule the delivery) because my street – which was supposed to reopen at 7am after being resealed and painted yesterday – was still closed! While walking over to meet the truck at the start of the yellow tape, I saw two neighbors taking their baby for a walk: I introduced myself, explained my predicament, and asked if by any chance they had an emergency number for the homeowner’s association. One had the HOA president’s cell number (yay!), so I called him – just in case the tape simply hadn’t been removed yet, and I could actually let the truck in. Both of the notices received from the HOA said the street would be closed for 24 hours, from 7am Friday to 7am Saturday: the HOA prez told me that the crew started late and the street won’t actually reopen until 3pm! I said that some kind of followup message to the community would have been appreciated, but that I know it’s not always possible (*cough* BS *cough*); then I thanked him for his patience with the random early Saturday call. Can’t hurt to suck up to the new overlord a little after starting off with a complaint.
The furniture company offered to come back on Wednesday, but I have to be in the office that day – and Thursday – so the couch will now be delivered on Friday. My back can’t take another week of the bean bag chair, though, so Da Jungle to da rescue…this is supposed to arrive tomorrow (
):
I pulled the trigger on a bunch of other stuff for the house while I was at it. Because, yanno, this place needs more boxes. ![]()
It’s now 10:36am, and I’m mostly over the morning’s misadventure. I can’t head to the old house (and then the grocery store) until 3pm, which is about when I’d hoped to be back home, but que sera. Maybe I’ll finish the home office sooner vs later: all that’s left to unpack/put away in here are two boxes of books.
I’m pretty hungry this morning, despite having finished my usual protein shake breakfast…this isn’t usual for me, and I just realized that I hardly ate anything yesterday.
I think lunch will be early. And maybe I’ll finally try the “popcorn” button on the new house’s microwave later.
Happy Saturday, all!
I opened the tailgate, and this big folding table slid out and landed on my right big toe. It’s still throbbing several hours later. I don’t think it’s broken because it’s not swollen. It’s just turning black and blue.
Ouch…I’m glad it’s alright today and won’t get in the way of Pride!
- Drop a USN sailor’s white hat on the floor upside down and you’ll see why we used to call them “dog dishes”.
I’m a project manager for a large federal defense contractor, and my current customer is the USN (specifically, boomers and their weapons systems). I’m surrounded by lots of former/active duty Navy; I’ll have to remember “dog dish.” ![]()
told Mousie this was between it and its maker now, since it had refused my help
You did everything you could.
Just the other day a fly got caught in the house and was crawling on a window, so I opened the top (the part without a screen) a bit and tried to guide the fly up and out. It couldn’t figure it out, though, and eventually I had to close the window and leave. I actually said out loud, “Well I tried, you stupid fly!”
One of the volunteers told me about her trans daughter, so I told her about Mollie.
Nice! ![]()
Hi, everybody. Frumious here. Izzy left yesterday, if anyone wants to read about it.
Well our boating adventure was short and not so sweet. We were planning to go up the Patuxent a little ways so the kids could swim. But we’d barely gotten to the river when we got a high energy temp alarm. So we limped back. The kids went to the pool instead and FCD is trying to figure out why we’re not getting the flow of raw water thru the engine. Dammit.
The meanies at The Lavender Closet bullied me into taking a pretty top and a sundress. My breakfast dripped on my shirt, so I had to change into the top.
I’m sure you looked lovely.
Dragging myself to Long Night in a bit. MEH!!
ETA: okay, I can click “snooze” ONE more time…
There were apparently a lot of call outs, they were trying to get me to run the 100,200, and 300 Slides. And do the undeliverables from the day before. At once. And they put me on the 200 Sort Table for the 1st hour. And it didn’t dawn on them till 0800 when the one Sup asked what the untouched cart of left behinds was, then there was plenty of help. God knows how much got left behind. But laundry is in the dryer, so I’m gonna finish my bacon and eggs and gin&tonic, then take a short nap before I let my favorite hockey team give me apoplexy.
It is hard to say. Possibly 80 to 100
That’s all? That’s Kryptonian level speed.
Doggio, curious, how well does that ‘Bug-A-Salt’ gun work and does Spot object to either the bugs or the gun?
It works sort of like a Daisy BB gun, you pump it, and the air shoots out a spray of salt, shotgun like. Spot doesn’t mind the gun, he loves the laser sight, he ran into the ottoman last night chasing it. And Mr. Former Feral is the opposite of Monkey and Nelso. He get exctied to watch the bugs, but doesn’t do anything about it.
I’m currently sitting on my cooler. Who has two thumbs and forgot her lawn chairs? This gal!
You’ve been away from the Triangle so long, you forgot how to prep for a tailgate. But Happy Pride!

I guess I need to start dating rats. ![]()
this place needs more boxes.
Did you turn into a cat?
Dragging myself to Long Night in a bit. MEH!!
< does voodoo to ward off the FUBAR Fairy >
Today started off raining and overcast which was lovely. The afternoon will unfortunately be hot and sticky.
I met with the guy that will install gutters and got that all ready to go. I need a broken concrete patio busted up and hauled away - he says he might know some people and will send me their info. The quote I got a while back was for $3k so here’s hoping he knows someone a little cheaper.
We used to have a fountain, but he kept playing with it and tipping it over, so we now use one of these.* It claims to be a no-tip bowl, but he’s managed to flip it over at least once.
One of my cats is also a dedicated bowl-tipper. The only thing that works so far is that type of bowl on top of a non-skid mat like this one. All other attempts were thwarted within a few days.
doggio yay for the return of water!
oopsie that really stinks about the couch, but glad you have an alternative coming! I feel your pain - when I moved earlier this year, my couch wouldn’t fit through the entryway to get it inside the house. I’ve been using a borrowed overstuffed chair and have been putting off getting one.
Mollie I hope Pride is going well today! And oh, shucks, too bad you just had to wear the pretty top
I hope you feel beautiful ![]()
