(Old) Trying To Reason with Hurricane Season - A Hockey MMP

Going to be high 80s today with an air quality alert in effect. Happy I have nowhere to go.

The wife is having “the dizzies” again and is still abed. This has been going on for quite a long time and MRIs have revealed nothing. She is sick of seeing doctors and unless her niece goads her into going, she refuses to make appointments.

So I ate breakfast by myself. Made my extraordinarily wonderful cornmeal pancakes, but used an organic bread flour instead of the usual King Arthur. I didn’t think these cakes could be any better, but I was wrong. I had to include ball bearings in the recipe so they wouldn’t float away.

Happy birthday shoe!! Those cupcakes look amazing, I hope you got to take some home with you.

Slept in a bit this morning and then made a dash to Sam’s Club to fill the car with gas before it gets busy. The fuel station becomes a madhouse later in the day but it’s hard to beat their price.

My sister gave me a stick Shark vacuum that she ended up not liking so I’m curious to try that out today. I used to love my current vacuum but it’s frankly too beefy for my floors now that I don’t have carpet, and it’s exhausting having to lift it up over the edge of every dang rug. And it does a terrible job picking up cat litter off the hardwood floors.

We passed our safety exam and got the sticker and the document to prove it. Yay!! Plus the inspector has a boat in our marina and FCD was talking to him about our “adventure” yesterday and the guy had a few suggestions. We’ll be going to the boat tomorrow afternoon (Dr appts in the morning) and trace out the entire system, in the hopes of finding the problem.

All my watering is done, including the planters on the front porch. I cleaned the kitchen floor and now I’m having a sammich and a couple of dill spears. FCD is on his way home. Dunno what the rest of the day holds.

Those were some very intensive hours.

I don’t think I’d ever get out of that chair. Hope it’s as comfortable as it looks. And boo on delayed delivery to delayed street work.

Everyone needs a Mattie. Listen to Mattie, because Mattie is right. You look cute. Period.

The stuff I bake tastes good. But doesn’t look good. Those look really good. Happy Birthday!:tada:

Went for a longer walk this morning and then looked at the paperwork that was covering the dining table. Included was a package with the prep for next Monday’s

Summary

colonoscopy

appointment. They put the date, but not the time, so I have to call them tomorrow. Today’s weather has been really nice - cooler in the morning, and now sunny. And the bugs haven’t started up yet. Can’t say the same for the slugs. Had to put on gloves to dig through the strawberry planter to find the slug (I hope there was only one) who has been eating my strawberries. Not appreciated.

Upon re-reading my post from this morning, I’m impressed with how many of the aforementioned activities I’ve actually done in just a few hours: I hung the LR curtains, got the car washed, brought the last of the “previous abode” stuff in, and puttered around a little. And I’m currently waiting for Amazon (everything I’m expecting today says “out for delivery”…woot!). All that remains from that list is doing laundry, which will happen later: there’s nothing wrong with my current plastic hamper, but one of the things coming from Da Jungle today is a hamper with a drawstring bag inside – which will make getting laundry from the top floor to the basement (and vice versa) much easier.

Somehow I’m even more sore and exhausted than yesterday. At the moment I’m hanging out in my home office, because my Aeron chair is currently the best seat in the house for my back. I’ve been sleeping well in the new place, but I think the past few days of unusual physical activity are catching up with me. I took some Tylenol this morning, and will take more after the new downstairs chair is delivered (before I start assembling it). I might catch a second wind at some point, but I need to be able to function at work tomorrow so I’m not going to push myself.

Right now it’s 12:30pm and lunchtime: I remembered to bring food upstairs with me (I’ll get the hang of multi-level living yet!), and am about to eat a banana and a raspberry Uncrustable. I plan to get mini-fridges for both this room and the downstairs TV room, so I don’t have to carry protein shakes and Gatorade bottles up and down steps all of the time.

'Tis a mystery.

Woo hoo! :tada:

Pffft - just fling it down the stairs! It’s going back up that needs to be easier! The only problem is dirties accumulating at the foot of the stairs - a bit of a trip hazard.

FCD is home. Chillage underway.

If it were just one staircase, maybe…but my laundry area is down two flights of stairs from the bedroom. With a long hallway in between. Getting dirty clothes downstairs will be muuuuch easier in a bag (which I absolutely intend to fling!).

Happy birthday, shoe!!

Ours is ~135 years old, with a four-car tarmac driveway which is not in the best shape, but we have bigger things to worry about.

or stand it on end?

The back room in our house is a one-storey addition to a two-storey house, with a low attic space with no access above it. No people access, anyway – we’ve heard critters wandering around up there. A couple hours ago I was sitting here reading and heard a loud thump; looked up and saw a largish hole in the ceiling with insulation hanging down. Modified rapture. And then I spotted a raccoon tail moving. A rather hefty coon soon appeared, and climbed up a shelving unit. There wasn’t enough space between the cat cave and the wall, so it hung onto the shelving unit, stuffed its face into the gap (ostrich-style), and tried to pretend it wasn’t there. Opened the back door and left the room for twenty minutes or so, shutting the door behind me; when I looked into the back room
the coon was gone. A bit later Lady SCAdian opened the kitchen door to leave for WallyWorld, and found two coons out on the porch – the big one and a much smaller one. They ran for cover, and disappeared.

Beside the coon, we’ve seen rabbits, plenty of squirrels, a lot of LBBs (little brown birds), and a few groundhogs (none of them in February), and our daughter looked out her bedroom window one night and spotted a deer in the garden. There was also a cardinal who built a nest in the butterfly bush, but she soon realised her mistake – the nest was maybe a foot and a half from the kitchen windows and people kept walking through the kitchen and looking at her – and moved out.

I cleaned, dusted, and vacuumed. I took out the trash and recycling. I took a little nap, since it’s 94 Ferrets out there.

So your workweek is three Mondays, Thursday, Friday?:open_mouth:

Unless it’s kung-fu movies.

Sounds like kindergarden.

Yeah, you’re not me.

A few mundane things have happened and I will try and join in the new mmp tomorrow. Such a procrastinator.
But cake day!

Hooray for pretty clothes, productivity, self-care, etc.!

I think I need to take a break from the rest of SDMB for a while. The level of vindictive, cruel, angry solutions to life’s problems being proposed, and the threads that seem like gleeful pile-on polarized wank-fests is getting me down.

My new Levi’s jacket just arrived. (Pic should be indigo, like new 501s. EDIT: It’s not. You need to click on the thumbnail.) I had one in the mid-'70s. I have two denim jackets from The Gap, that are quite faded. (They were not indigo when I got them in the '90s. Can’t remember why I have two.)

Country-style pork ribs are in the oven. They smell good. I made coleslaw yesterday (we had it with the crab cakes), so that will be our side today.

The ice cream man is outside. I would visit the van if I could still get a toasted almond bar.

And a wet early evening all. Still raining, been oscillating between heavy and light but every time I look outside there’s some water obeying gravity. Spent lots of time in the gym, about half of it reading, Facebooking, and sitting in the whirlpool, but still burned off a fairly decent number of calories. Nothing planned for tonight except Internettin’ and some NY TImes puzzle-solving. Temperature is down to 70F and supposed to stay around there all night so it should be comfortable sleeping.

And 20 messages to review before the night’s feeding…better get down to it.

VanGo, hope the meetings don’t exceed your pain level…I am no fan of our President but I can understand dozing off in the middle of the third meeting/briefing of the day…

Oopsie, a puttering unpacking is not a bad thing, long as the stuff you need is available. And you could come down here for your carwash…we seem to have them every 3/4 of a mile or so…and reading further, you are one energetic putterer…

FCM, yeah, the Kroger occasionally get hard to traverse due to a couple of the dollies being in the same aisle.

Don’t think I ever went to a Fazoli’s and there are none close to me, they are not quite out of business but less than 150 stores remain according to Google.

Cookie, those pancakes sound great, I usually only eat the small frozen ones but really need to go out one of these days for some plate-size pancakes and syrup and damn the calories!

52, thanks for the reminder, my car is telling me on startup that my fuel is low and then flashes a message asking if I want it to find a nearby station (No). I’ll fill up tomorrow at Kroger, should have $1.60/gallon off which should make the price a little more tolerable, but so glad I’m getting 32.5mpg and only having to fill up once a month, so the pain is not to often.

FCM, happy to hear you passed and hope the suggestion bears fruit.

Herald, quite an animal story. Raccoons can be rather fearless I have found.

Coppertone, see you on the next MMP.

Lily, understand your frustrations, but don’t leave us, please.

Flyboy, nice looking jacket.

And it’s approaching 7pm so need to get a couple sammiches in my belly so take care all.

Second childhood, I guess. Anyway, it was $10 cheaper from Tractor Supply than it was at Da Jungle. Same picture, though.

Having poke loin, baked N.O.T., and cauliflower. And a Wisconsin Old Fashioned.

Better late than never.

I would have gone anyways. Because ice cream man.

Many of us Mumpers have come to the same conclusion, for the same reason. Please keep hanging out here where the living is easy and kindness reigns.

Howdy Y’all! I deheathenated twice and had a most excellent first Sunday brunch afterward. We had a guest preacher and musician this mornin’. The preacher gave a fantastic homily and I told her she could come back anytime. The musician played guitar and sang the offertory. It was a song I know from way back church camp days. Thus, I told him he could also come back anytime. Amongst the food offerin’s at brunch was a scrumptious shrimp Étouffée. Perfectly spicy and oh so tasty! I went back in hopes of findin’ more but that bowl looked like it had been licked clean. All the stuff I took got et up, which I take as a high compliment. Needless to say we were worthless this afternoon. Large nappage was needed. I am still full. The big accomplishment this afternoon/evenin’ was to haul the biiiiiig trash can all the way down to the road for pickup tomorrow.

BooFae hope you enjoyed the day. I agree that cold pizza would be welcomed as a sup after a longish day.

Knotty glad the new power domes arrived. I had to figure that out as well. The mediums seem to work best for me.

Oopsie I need to get my vehicle washed as well. Of course, I have been thinkin’ that for several weeks. Glad you could finally get out and do the stuff.

VanGo and Oopsie all this talk of multiple irk meetin’s makes me just that much happier I am now a RDOS. Do. Not. Miss. That. At. All.

FlyBoy that is a cool purple horseshoe! Also the new Levi’s jacket is snazzy!

52 I think you will like the stick vacuum. We got one when we remodeled and got rid of carpet. We have vinyl plank floors and it works a treat.

MOOOOOOM conga rats on passin’ the inspection and the sticker. I know the sticker is for the boat, but still, STICKER!

Dicey do you get pictures of your colonoscopy? I got pictures and suggested we use one for Christmas cards but that got vetoed. Have fun (not!) with the prep.

Herald how dare that raccoon just drop by with out a text or a call first! The lack of manners appalls me.

Coppertone happy doperversary! Do come back and fill us in on everything that has happened. You know we live for this!

Lily lately I have ventured no further than the MMP. I can understand the need for a break.

WetOne I understand your disappointment. I probably wouldn’t have ventured out if I couldn’t get what I want.

I’m pretty much sticking to my new dietary regime, but a couple of cakes every few weeks can’t hurt.

I’ll add my felicitations: :birthday_cake: :tada: Happy birthday, shoe! :birthday_cake: :tada:

We could have a race to see who first carried their pooch to Rabbit Nirvana. (You’d win.)

It ended up being the leftover chicken. Burrito tonight. I can’t tell if it’s one I made with ground beef or pork. So I guess it’s really Burrito Surprise.

Sorry about your Canes. :frowning:

mollie, you’re just cute. Full stop.

Ollie thanks you for the scritches, red! You nailed it. His sole job is to be a beloved pet. He’s growing into the role.

Sorry you missed out on the empanada, but it sounds like you landed on your feet. What a pleasant evening, listening to frogs!

shoe, those are some fantastic-looking cupcakes, and on your birthday, you have to try all the flavors! I hope you had a terrific special day!

Important words, these. You sound like you’re making good headway on getting rid of the unwanted saplings.

swampy, you have this RDOS Fine Living thing down to a science! I am taking notes. Also, you nailed it with Ollie’s purpose. He’s pretty good at looking cute.

I love your Otis stories – he’s a character, and so cute, too! But yeah, I’ll take my little clueless dope over getting unceremoniously hauled around by a rogue hunter! Congrats on the weight loss, too, as well as passing your safety exam. Thanks also for the suggestion of the shiny bird reflectors!

< groan > (Love it!) Stay safe from ticks, knots, and everyone who is battling them this year! I had one dig in on my shin a couple of years ago – the first I’ve ever seen here – and scratched it off before I realized what it was. Naturally, the head was left behind. My doc wasn’t fussed and said to leave it alone and my body would deal with it in its own way. Which it did. Took awhile, though.

I had a cat that could do that, taters. Sweetest little thing – until she was on the hunt. Then she was ruthless.

Hope the mowing went well! Mine did.

oopsie, glad you had a productive day! You must be feeling at least a little more settled. Hope all the goodies arrived as they were supposed to today. And I’m totally with you on the mismatched dubbed voice v. actor. Very distracting. I’m watching The Thaw in fits and starts – hope you like it if you decide to watch.

That’s… a pretty adrenaline-inducing experience, herald!! I’ve had them get into the garage of a former home to get at the dog food, and that was exciting enough! Glad they cleared out.

I find rain very soothing, and bonus! I don’t have to feel guilty for not getting to all the outdoor chores. Also very pleasant to sleep to, if it’s just gentle rain. Enjoy the sky water!

cookie, I copied your cornmeal pancakes recipe and look forward to trying it one of these days. They do indeed sound delicious! I’m glad you shared it.

Today was a lovely, cool day, high temperatures hit 67F. Cloud cover is moving in with rain forecast for the next couple of days. Fine with me, because a quite-hot-for-here stretch is coming, starting next weekend. Temperatures are forecast for mid-nineties. Ugh! I will be hiding out in the AC.

I got some mowing done. There’s a little bit left, but if I never got to it, I doubt anyone would notice but me. Thought about baking a cake, but decided I don’t need it around at the moment. I’ll wait until there’s something to celebrate so I can share the calories joy. Swept the kitchen floor and ignored how much it needs mopping. Tomorrow, perhaps.

No wildlife sightings to report today, I’m afraid, other than those 2 dumb birds who can’t get enough of their reflections in the sliding glass door. Ollie was barking at something during one of our toddles, but I never saw what it was. I noticed he stuck pretty close to me, which is unusual behavior for him. Maybe he’s smarter than I thought.

Off to go have that mystery burrito! Have great evenings, all!
