(Old) White Out! The Official Start Of Summer MMP

There’s one less then two miles from my home.

Not bad, though I prefer the local “Chicken Coop” for the … uh, ambiance.
They do not fuck around mess up your order.

HALLO!

This reference really made me smile.

Started the day on a bad note.

Summary

Apparently perimopause can cause both chills AND hot flashes. Such fun!
Let’s throw in the insomnia, mood swings, and, ah, the gastric issues!
Yay!
It’s time to play “Can We Trust This Fart?!”
Narrator: “Turns out … nope.”

At least that was all at home, where there’s no one to judge me except my drama-llama of a cat, who yells meows for attention while standing upon my bladder.

… but miraculously made it through the Long Night shift at work without either stoopit-crying in the walk-in, or throwing up, and also I ate fud. Which stayed put.

That was darker than needed, but that was how I started the day.
Things are better now, and imma kill some zombies and eat more fud.

Me too. Although for a first visit to a new place I prefer something milder. Not so much tandoori, but any of the less-hot saucy meals.

Not that I fear they’ll make it too hot to enjoy, but rather that anyone can make hot. I’d like to see how they do their flavors first. If that’s skillful I’ll be back for scorching next time. If not, I won’t be back at all.

Oh, no, not that again. Almost as bad as all those Castle Anthrax women wanting spankings.

Lee’s was the best. Still is, if you live where they are. Which I now don’t :frowning: They’re pretty much just KY, IN, & OH w a smattering in other nearby states. Greater St. Louis had several, but that was their westernmost outpost.

What I especially liked was they had non-breaded roasted chix parts that was also spiced and tasty and juicy, not dried out and tasteless. Their breaded deep fried was yummy too, but became dietarily outré once I became diabetic. Lemme tell ya’: fried chicken withdrawal is pretty painful.

Never heard of Mrs. Winner’s. Mrs. Winner’s | Locations says they’re in GA & NC with one each in AL & TN. So not much overlap in coverage area w Lee’s, but they are in neighboring regions.

A) they have not changed. B) you’re not missing much. C) their happy hour (or lunch) prices are neither bargain nor rip-off. Their normal prices are a rip.

It was interesting to compare the Fri night clientele of the two places not 1/2 mile apart. What was most obvious was that the average patron at Hooters was 75 lbs heavier than the average patron at the wine & frou frou food joint. Diet matters.

That does look awesome. This is our local equivalent: HOME | franschickenhaven. The food is great, if dietarily disastrous, and the same old folks been cookin’ there for years and genuinely care ‘bout what they’re doin’. The interior is as modest as the exterior, and equally 1960s-ish. Not retro kitsch; just still original equipment. With a thin patina of airborne chix grease. As you say, … ambiance.

Sounds like maybe you’re gaining a little on those symptoms. Yaay if so. I seem to be developing some lactose intolerance even as I’m adding ever more cream to my coffee. Which sorta amounts to self-inflicted IBS every morning. Un-fun and farts are strongly contraindicated as the medics say. But I do know I’m not all impacted up there like the woo sites tell us to be scared of. So there’s that.

As to me …

Succeeded in getting into bed early then promptly to sleep. Yaay! Awoke barely 7 hours later at 0415. Bing! Ready to go. Sigh. Which portends an afternoon nap.

Been up balconatin’ & caffinatin’ & blatheratin’ ever since. Still not sunrise yet, but getting close. The omens foretell another warm tropical day.

My legs & hips inform me I walked a lot yesterday. Not sore, just that well-used feeling. Stand up carefully.

Speaking of body problems, late tonight will be the 2 week anniversary (weekaversary?) of the Chaise Lounge Incident. My shoulder is still tender & some angles and motions are just into the painful range. Looks like, as with the last injury to it, this’ll be a nagging annoyance for a couple months at least. Sigh.

Solidified plans for basic sports bar dinner followed by a low-rent rendezvous w GF for Sun night / Mon morning. Yaay!

No plans whatever for today = Sat. Got more RDOSin’ to do, and that’s about it.

The outdoor geezer disco has a Fleetwood Mac band that I’ve heard there before. Good, not great. Might do that. Other options are an Allman Brothers tribute and a Jackson’s tribute. Or a couple of local acts that aren’t tributes. Decisions decisions.

Whelp, sun’s up, I’m driven inside, and may as well put this on the wire.

Cheers!!

Well, no, because he wants something cool. Here’s what he bought originally… Adjustable Tint Sunglasses with Built-in ND Filter (Polarized)

{{{shoe}}} Been there, doing all of that. No fun at all.

I’ve been sitting here tenuously eating some leftovers from Lee’s for breakfast. It’s tenuous because my stupid BMS wouldn’t let me eat more than a couple of bites as leftovers for dinner last night.

For some reason I’ve been waking up between 3 and 4 in the morning and it’s annoying. This morning it was about 3:15. MusicMan is up and on his way to work. Not too much going on right now. Perhaps I’ll take a nap or something…

Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 20c/68f with a predicted high of 22c/72f and mostly cloudy. Weather app says “What a fucking boring bag of suck.” Really? It’s not that bad outside and there’s no precipitation in the forecast so I think it’s pretty good.

I learned to type on very old manual typewriters, my mum had one at home too so I got lots of practice. Even now, I have pretty good speeds and it amazes my work colleagues that I can touch type while they’re still more at the “hunt and peck” end of the scale.

I’m so glad your right eye is doing so well, I hope it’s not too long before the left one can catch up.

Awww…poor Bailey, that can’t have been fun for her. I hope you manage to get the groomer out so she can have your princess feeling fresh and clean again.

Sounds like everything went well for you, and breakfast sounds lovely too. I bet you were ready for that!

Well done to you! Now that you’ve finished your PT sessions, you should be able to maintain at least. The trainer will have shown you a range of useful exercises for what you want to achieve, and it’s easy enough to work out a training regime for yourself so that you’re targeting muscle groups on different days, and getting the odd rest day in there as well.

Yesterday evening was pretty much as predicted. I got home a bit late because my train from Big City Station was delayed. There was a train at my usual platform that would have taken me to my home station but it was packed to the gills so I chose not to get on it, and decided to wait for the local chuffer. I had to go out again later to collect 'im indoors from the station when he finally got back - his train from Bristol was running late so he missed a couple of potential connections. Anyway, he got back, we watched a film and I was in bed at a reasonable time.

Got up this morning, tended to the needs of the mogs, had a banana with my breakfast cuppa and then went to the gym. I spent an hour pushing and pulling various weights until it was time for Tushar’s kettlebells class. Back home now, laundry is doing its thing, I have cleaned up and am having a restorative cuppa before I go and dry my hair.

I need to get some more food for Muffin which means going to a specific pet store. I get 2hrs free parking on the retail park there, so we’ll go there and get lunch at Jack’s Café which is just on the other side of the car park. Then we can walk into town and do our separate errands before meeting up to go home. 'im indoors is cooking tonight so I have no idea what we’re having. My turn tomorrow, I am thinking of doing chicken curry as it will give me leftovers for Monday night too.

Is there any Indian food that’s mega-mild and not really spicy? I don’t like really hot food and there are a lot of spices that just don’t do it for me - like curry powder, cumin, turmeric, chili powder… I’ve looked up some recipes and noped right away. I figure a cruise is a good place to sample different cuisine, but it would help if I knew what to try so I won’t waste it. I’m not a super-picky eater, but just the smell of certain spices sends me running.

I managed just over 5 hours of sleep, and when I woke, there was no going back. Dammit. And as Iay there pondering stuff, I heard the damned woodpecker again. I’m thinking I should spray the entire joist with insecticide - if there are no critters within, the bird should leave it alone, right? Stoopit woodpecker.

We had a big-ass storm come thru last night, complete with tornado watch/warning/whatever that I didn’t know about till this morning. FCD wants to go check on the boat. It’ll give me a chance to check out the new bluetooth entry system to the pool. I installed the app and I think it’s set up correctly, but we’ll see. I’m guessing they had a lot of unauthorized users.

I also need to run to Food Lion for a couple of things. And since I didn’t do it yesterday, I’ll sort the pantry today.

FCD got into his size-smaller jeans yesterday. He has 4 pair - 2 black, 1 blue, 1 khaki. They’ll be going on the cruise with us, along with a some of his now-baggy jeans. We’re discussing how much of what to pack for a month-long trip. Our bags have a 50# limit. Definitely don’t need to pay a penalty for heavy bags.

I entered our passport info with the airline and found an app that’s supposed to streamline re-entry into the US - we shall see. I think apart from printing some boarding passes, we’re set to go. Oh, except our cabin hasn’t been assigned yet. They may not do that till a couple of days before we sail. That’s what happens when you let them pick your room to save a few bucks.

Anyway, I’m up and caffeinating. So it begins. Happy Last Day of May!!

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 63 Amurrkin out and Nn.O.S. with a predicted high of 82 and N.O.S. A little cooler than normal for these parts. The big plan of the day is quality cee-mint pond time and other RDOS inactivities. Any need to feed will be via forage. Tomorrow is first Sunday brunch. However I am not scheduled to serve, so we made the executive decision to be heathens. Been a long time since I’ve done that. I will watch online so there’s that. We will probably get stoner food and have more quality cee-mint pond time.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Sattidy Y’all!

There is plenty of Indian food that is not spicy in the sense of hot. Darn near all Indian food is heavily herbed and spiced; so very complex and exotic, with the herbs’ and spices’ flavors dominating the rice, beans, meat, etc.. There is substantially zero Indian food that avoids any of, much less all of, cumin & turmeric & onions.

Saag is a mildly spiced spinach / onion puree. Which is typically served with sautéed paneer (cheese), chicken, lamb, etc., chunks over rice. If you wanted entry-level Indian that’s one good choice. Tandoori anything, but typically chicken, is another not-hot not too weird flavor worth a try.

Everyone else on the cruise is throwing away a pound+ of food per meal. And still eating 2x what they eat at home. Pure bacchanalia. Being concerned about wastage on a cruise is utterly incongruous and unnecessary. You’re worried about farting in a windstorm.

A cruise is exactly the time and place to try new things with no concern for cost or perhaps not liking it. If you get two bites in and don’t like it, order something else. That’s normal expected customer behavior. Look at it this way: your cabin is priced on the expectation you’ll eat or waste all that food. You’re only denying yourself ripping yourself off by not trying new and different things you may not like. And by not overeating / mis-eating. Be a bad girl for once; it’s sorta refreshing.

Make sure not to pack to 49.9 lbs. Your scale and theirs are not necessarily perfectly in sync. Also don’t forget you’ll probably buy something somewhere during the cruise and not ship it home. So if you leave with 49.9# bags, you’ll be trying to return with 55# bags.

I had that flail with BB going to Norway. Both ways. pro tip: Don’t be that girl.

If you have Global Entry then the MPC app is pointless. If you don’t have Global Entry, the MPC app can save you a boatload (heh) of time.

If you’ve found a different app, it’s probably a scam.

Not me. I hate food waste with white hot hate! On one cruise, some teenage girls ordered a pizza, and as soon as it was delivered to their table, they got up and walked away. Never even looked it it! Even the steward expressed his disgust. Inexcusable.

BTDT when my mom and I cruised in 2014. We each had around 46#. As for souvenirs, maybe a couple of t-shirt for the grands, but we’re way beyond bringing home stuff. I’m not concerned about that at all. Plus our third bag probably won’t even be 40#.

That’s the one I have. Considering this is only our second international flight, Global Entry isn’t worth it for us. Even without it, coming in thru Miami last year was no biggie at all.

Showered, dressed, and waiting for FCD to finish breakfast so we can head to the marina. Afterwards, it’s a quick stop at Food Lion, then who knows?

That was me for most of my life. A life where I was forced by occupation to eat about half my monthly meals in restaurants.

Eventually I realized that allowing the chef to dictate how big a plate I had to clean was just me allowing them to sabotage me. I choose how much to eat. They choose how much to plate. Any wastage is 100% their fault. My late wife had, as was so often the case, a pithy take on the situation: “Don’t be their human garbage disposal.”

Now part of it is on me if I order excessively. So I generally don’t do that. With a small exception for trying exotic things I can’t usually find that I may not enjoy enough to finish.

I agree the untouched pizza is contemptible if deliberate. There might have been some countervailing reason / partial excuse, but I doubt it.

From any sort of waste-is-sin worldview, travel is monumental amounts of waste. A few ounces of novel food once isn’t going to condemn your soul any more than it already was when you left home.

Duckmobile:

That’s my elbow in the passenger window.

And a good morning all. Up about 0630 and have been futzing about until it gets near 8am and I can start getting ready to go referee soccer at 9. Then do another game at 1:30pm and go from there. Looks like the high will be about 80F so comfy weather for refereeing. Otherwise a quiet day is expected.

shoe, I have those ‘trust issues’ too when I have, ummm, intestinal gas, normally it is no issue but…and glad you are doing better.

pilot, have a good weekend, whatever you end up doing. And as for cruise food, I try to clean my plate like Momma taught me, but the buffet at breakfast usually gets me off to a good (or bad depending if your counting calories) start each day of the cruise…

boo fae, thanks for the encouraging words. We worked on chest and shoulders one day, back another and then legs on day 3 and I’ll try to keep that rhythm going. And checked Jack’s Cafe menu, looks like they provide for a lot of different tastes. Enjoy.

FCM, I’m wearing 40" waist jeans now, might even get into 38"ones now, but really don’t want to go there yet. I’m just being careful never to forget to wear my belt…and you reminded me, still haven’t got my baggage tags, need to check the cruise website.

VanGO, thanks for the smile this early in the day.

And now I need to finish my internetting and get ready to chase 10 year olds for an hour. Take care all.

Great pic. Thanks for sharing.

And you get an “A” in job selection. I’ve watched plenty of parades from near the finish line where it’s obvious most of the marchers, candy throwers, musicians, and smiler-wavers have had about all the fun they can stand. When this parade ended you were still fresh as a daisy.

Those are cool. As someone who can never get the cool sunglasses due to prescription (thickness and astigmatism), I sympathize.

My coworker follows Jainism, which means he doesn’t eat root vegetables. My husband likes going to the local Indian restaurant with him, because he (my husband) knows he doesn’t have to worry about getting something too oniony. Not every Indian restaurant caters to Jainists, though.

I’ll second this. Not for everybody, but anybody who likes chicken with BBQ sauce, will probably be okay with tandoori chicken.

Huh. I was thinking about the duck tour (ride the ducks). This is much more adorable.

Today’s another hot day. This morning we finished the garden work before it got too warm, and then watered the raspberries, strawberries, tomatoes and herbs. Slept like crap last night. No idea why. Wasn’t really thinking about anything, and my digestive system was being cooperative. And I didn’t have caffeine too late. Just didn’t sleep.

If I were one of those people who nap, I would be napping now. Gave napping up when I was 14 months. Parents still remind me.

This place is ‘new’ in that it’s only been there for a year. (I just looked them up, and their business filing was in September 2023. I don’t remember exactly when they opened.) The first time we went (dined inside) I had a goat curry, ‘5 star’ spicy. It was perfect. Very flavourful, and some endorphins released. I get why you like to try milder first though. As for me, I find that places might tone it down for Westerners – who may be trying to show off. I call this ‘Farang 5’, from the Thai word for ‘foreigner’. So if I order 5-star, I’ll either get real 5-star, or ‘Farang 5’. If the former, then I can see how hot they do it. If the latter, I can tone it up next time. We usually eat take-out, and I’ll get the hottest I can for eating at home. If we’re dining inside the restaurant, I’ll tone it down.

You can’t beat a quick breakfast burrito! I’m still thinking of a chorizo-and-egg one; only, the corner market doesn’t open until 0800 so I have an hour to wait before I can get some heavy cream for the scramble.

Gotcha. I meant “new” as in “new to me” as in “first visit no matter how long they’ve been open.”

Somehow I had gotten the impression from your post about your meal that it was your first time there. On re-reading now I see I greatly over-interpretted that. Oops on me. Sorry to sow confusion.

And yes, chorizo & eggs is wonderful breakfast no matter how prepared.

One of my favorite local places does a chorizo benedict that’s great. EM, spicy-hot chorizo patty, poached egg, and spiced-up Hollandaise. A not-pickled Jalapeño slice on top. Very festive looking with its little hat. I think I just decided what I’ll have for breakfast. :face_savoring_food:

You might be able to do something similar there at home without needing to wait until the store opens to get cream.

No spicy chorizo up here. Seems like a SoCal thing. I learned how to ask how spicy the chorizo is in Spanish and went to a new carniceria. (Que tan picante es el chorizo?) The woman indicated not at all. :frowning: When I buy bulk chorizo at the supermarket, I have to add cayenne pepper to it. I did buy a can of chorizo from the carniceria (Who knew it came in cans?) so I’ll give it a try. I need to get back there, as their fajitas are very good, and very convenient; just cook and eat.

I had an over-easy egg in my burrito yesterday, and I like scrambling the eggs in the chorizo. I’m not entirely sure if I’ll have a burrito. It’s just the leading contender at this point.

Here’s some video of the bee spill.

OK, I’ll watch for it on the buffet and give it a try. Thanks.

We were at the marina too early to test out the app - it’s only functional from 10-7. We were talking to one of the staff there - apparently, some folks there gave out the code to local non-boat folks. The pool is only for slipholders and transients, not neighbors. So the app is an attempt to stop that. And non-app users are given codes. Anyway, we’ll try next time.

After, we swung by Food Lion and I got a few things, and once again forgot the peanut butter. Dammit. Next time. Once home, I attacked the pantry - it wasn’t too bad. The worst part was where I jammed the plastic bags and occasional paper bag. But that’s all sorted out - there’s a bag of plastic bags to be recycled, a few in the pantry for whatever use, and some paper bags, just in case. I also pulled out some canned goods that I’d gotten from MIL - like the canned collards. That stuff is going to be donated somewhere. Everything else is organized and I have a good idea of what I need and what’s overstocked.

It’s rather breezy out with a chance of showers later, then sun and no rain thru Thursday. Unless things change. We shall see.

I went to the corner market to get the heavy cream (cream makes for fluffier eggs). Walked in, looked at the pint of whipping cream, and walked out. The cashier asked if there was something I was looking for. I said, ‘I was looking for heavy cream, but I’m not paying nine bucks for it.’ :astonished: I’ll pick some up at Trader Joe’s or the supermarket. In the meantime, I’ll have to use Mi Esposa’s reduced-fat milk.

The canned chorizo is cooking. It’s definitely going to get a goodly amount of cayenne.

The new TJ’s is open.
