Olympics Closing Ceremony Watch-along thread (UK)

I didn’t care about all the music, and it wasn’t as good as the Opening Ceremony, but I enjoyed the lunacy of both.

AND THEY PLAYED A KATE BUSH SONG IN ITS ENTIRETY!!! Hell, that alone makes it the greatest Closing Ceremony in history (as far as I’m concerned anyway). The one that comes close is Calgary in 1988, where kd lang came out and performed live, making everyone get up and dance.

If it makes them feel better, I thought significant chunks of it were pretty crap.

But the Python bit was fabulous, I rather liked the zombie Freddie call and response, and there was plenty of other good stuff too.

Mixed bag, really.

Yep, NBC totally cut out the Kate Bush song. They cut out a lot more too. The first hour seemed to be reduced to 10-15 minutes. The entrance of the athletes took about, what 2 minutes?

Hell no - people on there have been cynics about the olympics from the start, but enjoyed the opening ceremony because it was good, and didn’t enjoy this because it wasn’t. I think it probably appealed more to an international audience rather than an audience who hears those songs repeatedly on the radio all the bloody time, including kate bush. Britpop represented by wonderwall, ffs.

It also just wasn’t as televisual as the opening ceremony - like a concert where you can bet the people there are enjoying themselves, but it’s a bit dull on screen.

I remember that. They introduced her with “Ladies and Gentlemen! The Alberta Rose, Miss K. D. Lang” and she came out dancing and spinning around singing “Spin Me Round”. It was great.

I know I’ll take hell for it here, but having John Lennon singing Imagine was perfect. Fucking perfect.

“Imagine all the people, sharing all the world.”
I’m a softie and had tears streaming down my face.

It’s playing again, and now I see some dude singing “Wish You Were Here.” You guys have the absolute best music in the world. No comparison.

But the turtle-back Lennon face sculpture with people underneath it releasing balloons was just…well, I thought it was a bit silly.

I really want to see a “Behind The Scenes” about the technology of the Olympic stadium.

Watching the NBC evisceration of the show right now.

Stripper police represent!

Ryan Seacrest and fashion models; is this some kind of sick joke?

The fashion models are forgivable, if only because Britain has been telling the rest of the world how to dress for hundreds of years.

This show has given me measure of respect for the Spice Girls.

It can’t be easy to climb a ladder onto the top of a cab in those heels.

Gives new meaning to the phrase Mini-dress.

Wonder how much it costs to bedazzle 5 Minis?

Uh, why doesn’t Liam Gallagher raise his microphone, instead of hunching down?

The fashion models are unforgivable, because the Olympics are all about striving to achieve things and fashion models are stick figures with pouty lips.

Always look on the bright side of life…

Well, Harry seemed to be enjoying it and whistling along. It’s good to be the “spare”, you can let your hair down.

The man called it…

Life’s only got bright sides when you can bleep out the shit, apparently?

I believe those were London Taxis, not Minis.

BTW, I missed mentioning that Russell Brand and Bond doing I Am The Walrus (the bus being an allusion to the Magical Mystery Tour) was quite enjoyable.

…who think only of themselves. I used to design for GODS!
