OMG! David Tennant is doing a Jeremy Brett impression!

I hadn’t seen any of Brett’s Sherlock Holmses for a while so, while watching “The Dancing Men” the other night I was surprised that David Tennant, when playing Doctor Who, has adopted many of Brett’s mannerisms, like sitting brooding with his fingertips touching, then bursting out of the room when he has an answer, and the way they both use their spindly legs whilst climbing around. It’s a direct crib, and the Doctor is better for it.

There’s nothing wrong with stealing from the best, and there are still some stories that haven’t been put on film. So now we need a Watson…

Poor David Tennant isn’t going to be doing any climbing around soon, alas - he’s had to drop out of the RSC’s production of Hamlet with a bad back.

Never mind, there’s a Christmas special of Dr. Who already in the can!

And THAT, to a junkie like me, is all that matters.

Okay, kids, I have wasted FAR too much of my life on that show and soundly regret that my kids started me on the new series. So, how do you expect the new kid to do the character?

FTR, in my span, first five: great, #6: iffy, #7: great, #8: pretty good and with serious staying power, #9 Brilliant, and #10 greatest ever, even beating #4.

(adding ALL of Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock Holmeses to my Christmas list)

As opposed to… using their noses?

It’s different the way they do it. More like dancing. But they both COULD do it with their noses.

i’m SO out of the news loop for the last eight months. what’s the story?

I actually think that brooding with fingertips touching is from Doyle, but my memory could be wrong and I don’t have time to check it. (Certainly Rex Stout uses it for Nero Wolfe, and Stout has several subtle Holmes-ian references.) I also recollect that Basil Rathbone did it when he played Holmes (not as often, and only in the earlier ones). Again, I’ll not rely on my memory, someone needs to check it.

I also do recall that Doyle often had crawling about and jumping around.

So it may not be Tennant copying Brett, but using Doyle.

He’s been appearing as Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company (very prestigious gig), to sell-out audiences. He missed a couple of performances last week and was replaced by his understudy, and the papers were saying he’d hurt his back. On Wednesday it was announced that he needs an op for a slipped disc. Here’s the news on the BBC:

I’m guessing you already know he’s bowing out of Dr. Who.

He still has to make the three or four, or whatever it is, Specials for 2009. He’s supposed to start filming the first of those in January, so hopefully he’ll be fighting fit for that.

thanks for the link. that’s a shame about his back. i have back problems too so i totally understand why he’s going ahead with the operation. frankly, i wonder if he’ll be able to return to the role. there’s only four weeks left until his run ends.

yeah, tennant leaving was hard to miss. youtube (along with everybody else with audio capability) was running his sound bite about every sixty seconds. he’s going to be a hard act to follow, that’s for sure. please let it NOT be robert carlyle!! loved him in ‘the full monty’ but he doesn’t have the presence the role calls for.
