Tenant may remain The Doctor

For a fat load of cash. Story here.

Good news as far as I’m concerned, and good news for him if they’re willing to pay 1.5 million pounds (roughly $3 million) to keep him on. Probably makes all the previous Doctor actors mad with envy.

Of course, this is from a gossip rag, so take it for that.

OK, so she’s not really his daughter, but…if Jenny ever comes back on the show again, there’s going to be a seriously icky, creepy subtext to any episodes she’s in. (Too bad, because I did like her character.)

Kind of a pity, because when he does leave, it will be a lot harder to continue with another Doctor. I think longer than 3-4 seasons is a mistake, if only from the POV of keeping the show going and fresh. The Doctor periodically changing bodies and personalities is one of the unique things about DW, and if Tennant hold on for 7-8 years, it’s going to be awfully hard to keep some fans when there is a radical change in the main character.

I just read that Adrian Lester, a black actor, is interested in the part (it’s on his Wikipedia page as “citation needed”, tho). I think it’d be awesome to have a black Doctor at the same time America got a black President. Two things no one ever thought would happen

Given what a total Who geek Tennant has been since early childhood, he may just continue the role until he’s 105, which would be fine by me.

Whereas I’ve had enough of 1-2 season Doctors (Eccleston really pissed me off by leaving the way he did) and I like Tennant, so I’d like to see him stay for a good 6-7 years.

Then again, the rotating companion thing is getting annoying too, so I hope the next companion stays for at least two years, if not three.

That might be what they intend to do with River Song.

Wait, am I crazy? Isn’t Georgia Moffett related to Peter Davison?

Wow! I must be the last to know – I don’t watch the new DW – but I didn’t realize Doc #5’s daughter was on the show as … the doctor’s daughter. That’s cool. Also 'cause PD’s my fave doc (which is why I know his daughter’s name in the first place).

How very incestuous.

You might like this appearance by PD with the current Doctor, in a short skit done for a BBC charity show (it’s a bit spoilery I suppose, but not very serious)

You should start a thread here asking for recommendations about the new Who, because when it’s good it’s very, very good.

3-5 years seems typical. I believe Tom Baker held the longest with 7 seasons.

1 season is pretty lame.

What was his motivation, “He didn’t know it would look like that.” Does that mean he didn’t know there would be special effects aliens and such?
Eccelston and Tennatat were both in Jude, which I found rather cool.

Uh, current Series 1 or are you talking about 1963? Because William Hartnell and Christopher Eccleston were both wicked cool Doctors. You have to take each Doctor on his own terms and Eccleston brought a bitterness and angst to the role that Tennant lacks. Not that it’s bad, but he plays it like someone who has grown beyond, to an extent, his anger.

Dating Peter Davison’s daughter still seems like incest, though.

Tom Baker held on for about 7 years and until DT came along was regularly voted the favourite Doctor by the fans of the programme.

I too was annoyed with Eccleston for a while, but I felt he was good overall and could have been better given time to develop. The same could be said of McGann, although he has reprised the role numerous times in audio productions and has a clear character.

So as a BBC licence payer, if they choose to pay DT a lot of cash to stay it will be money well spent, Doctor Who is better than 90% of anything else the Beeb waste my money on. Maybe it can be a double benefit and they’ll cancel a soap or two to fund it.

The BBC make loads of money off Doctor Who anyway. I don’t think his wages will cut in to that much.

David Tennant is the best thing to happen to Doctor Who since it returned to the air. He’s got a long way to go before he overstays his welcome IMO.

It doesn’t seem incestuous to me, just really, really weird given that Tennant is such a “fangirl” over Peter Davison. The whole Children in Need short was basically Tennant gushing over him, culminating in “You’re my Doctor.” I mean, I wonder if he and Georgia have anything to talk about besides the fact that her dad is made of awesome?

I haven’t really seen any episodes before Tom Baker, but I was referring to Eccleson. I liked him at the time and thought it was kind of lame that he was only on for one season. Of course, several seasons with Tennant later, I don’t miss him.

But how did the transition to Davison go? That’s the point. My impression is, “okay, could have been better,” but I’m pretty far removed.

According to this nifty chart, the show’s ratings started to pick up (from an abysmal low) during Tom Baker’s final season and continued to climb for a while into Davison’s tenure. (From the looks of it, he didn’t carry his momentum into his second season – “Time-Flight” probably didn’t help.)

I hadn’t seen the ratings quoted by Nonsuch before, but my own opinion is that the last two Tom Baker stories (Keeper of Traken and Logopolis|) were quite strong, but that the first Davidson story, Castrovalva was incredibly dull. Davidson’s tenure did pick up towards the end with Revelation of the Daleks and the Caves of Androzani.

I can’t say I’ve disliked any of the “classic” Doctors, but I’ve enjoyed some more than others. I even liked Colin Baker, although I think he works much better on audio as he has a fantastic voice and you don’t have to watch his awful costume.

It is always going to be difficult for whoever ends up replacing Tennant as he has defined the Doctor for a new generation and some people will likely have problems coming to terms with his replacement. I like DT and think he’s a great actor, and if he wants to do another season or two that will be great, but conversely if he decides to go I will still watch the series. Caveat: Unless they replace him with somebody totally dire, even then it would be hard for me to stop watching a programme I’ve enjoyed for well over 30 years.
