Omnibus College Football Thread 2021-22

Man, Georgia’s defense is for real. I don’t think Arkansas’ offense was ever outstanding, but to shut them out and dominate them as badly as they did is a statement win. The truth will be revealed as they get into November when they play Florida, and if they win, then presumably Alabama in the SEC title game. I wouldn’t entirely overlook Tennessee, either. The Vols finally have an offense that’s worth watching.

Evidently Georgia is 18.5 points better than Arkansas.

37 points better, actually.

It’s still early in the season but the Dawgs defense is starting to remind me of Alabama’s defense in 2011-12. That Tide team was probably the last team to succeed with mostly loading the box. Offenses have evolved a bit since then. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when Georgia takes on a team that can spread the field. Florida has that kind of attack. Tennessee, though lacking in terms of overall balance, is another team that could cause some headaches.

Bama actually beat Ole Miss a lot worse than what the score would indicate. I turned it off after it was 35-0 Bama in the third so they obviously took their foot off the gas.

Oregon at Stanford was a wince-inducing mess all around.

There’s still a lot of game left but if you asked me which of the 3 undefeated SEC teams not named Georgia or Alabama would still be without a loss today (Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky), I wouldn’t have said Kentucky. Good for them.

I still don’t know how good Michigan is, but I’m enjoying the run. They probably drop 2 games to MSU, PSU, and OSU but they probably finish with 10 wins this season which is not what I expected at the start of the year.

What a comedy of errors the end of the UF v Kentucky game is. There seems to be a penalty or a bad play on every play.

#3 Oregon shits the bed and gives away a win to Fuc… uh… Stanford.

People should get fired over this.

I think Mich is for real - best team in the Harbaugh era. We’ll see what happens against OSU and Mich St.

That puts UGA squarely in the driver’s seat in the SEC East such that they could get popped by Florida and still end up playing in the CFP

I hope Auburn beats LSU – I really do. I’m so sick of Orgeron. He got lucky. He doesn’t have the brains to coach; he had assistants do it for him and now he’s making the same mistakes he made when he coached Ole Miss, meddling too much in the offense and defense. I can’t remember the last time we didn’t have a running game. Even when we lost 8 games a year, we still had Kevin Faulk.

We’ve got a decent sized group of FSU alumni here in Chicago, that win today tasted very good.

Even sweeter knowing that Jimbo Fisher’s Aggies dropped two straight, lol.

I have to admit, the top of the Pac 12 was extremely impressive today. I mean Oregon State completely destroyed the 2-3 Washington Huskies by 3 points. If that’s not a massacre, I don’t know what is. Then Arizona State was able to add another win to its previously impressive showings over 1-4 Southern Utah, 0-5 UNLV, and 1-4 Colorado.

I’m calling it right now. That’s your CFB Playoff National Championship game right there. Oregon State-Arizona State. Bookmark it!

Still better than watching overrated OU cruise to another nationally-televised beatdown in January.

Obviously we have no idea how the conference schedules will play out in the P5 conferences, but Cincinnati could very easily finish their season undefeated. If that happens, would they be in the four-team playoff? They would have two wins over P5 teams (Indiana and Notre Dame). Would that be enough?

It should but college football is corrupt and tptb might well find an excuse to keep them out.

It depends if there are several undefeated teams or not. I don’t see them getting in over Georgia or Alabama especially if only loss is SEC championship or a 1 loss or better Big Ten champion (though it would be hilarious if Cincinnati gets in over Ohio State). ACC and PAC12 are a mess so I think Cincinnati gets in over them. The question then is on what happens with the Big 12 and Oklahoma with one loss. Undefeated Oklahoma would get in over Cinci.

Cincinnati’s win over ND was a legit power win, IMO. Whether the computers see it that way remains to be seen, and that will depend on how the Irish do down the stretch, which seems kinda unfair, but that’s the system we’ve got.

I’d love to expand to 8 teams with 3 at-large teams getting bids. It’s going to be hard for a team like Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, or UCF and UH (when they’re at their best) to get consideration in a four-team format. The CFP was designed really with the major conferences in mind, almost as a way to exclude the elite non-major teams. But with an 8-team playoff with three at-large bids, it would be an outright scandal if an undefeated non-major got jobbed out of the playoffs.

As a fan of the Big 12, I would find it more than a bit hilarious if Cincy would get in over a 1-loss OU. I have no love for the Sooners now and forever.

Do I have to wait longer than a single week to show how stupid your statements were, or can I start now and continue as the season rolls on? You also keep forgetting that you’re not arguing with me, but with a bunch of different rankings. Every single one of which I consider vastly more accurate in their ratings than you, even individually. Hell, I give almost zero credence to the coaches polls, as most coaches just farm that duty out to someone and can’t be arsed. I’d still consider their poll to be superior at prognostication when compared to you.

Need I remind you that your argument that I challenged was that the Pac 12 (and ACC) were stronger conferences this year than the Big-12. Not sure what OU has to do with it, as I specifically stated there were many teams who could win the Big 12. Plus, since you love the transitive property so much, OU just beat the team that destroyed Stanford that beat Oregon that beat Ohio State. They must be the best team ever!

I spoke of conference overall, but you wanted to focus on the top. 2 teams in the Big 12 are in the top 10 of the composites. Zero from the Pac 12. 3 teams (30% of the Big 12) are ahead of the top team out of the Pac 12. 6 teams (60% of the Big 12) are in the top 30 of the composites, compared with 3 teams (21%) of the Pac 12.

I know, I know. You’re much smarter than all of those modelers, sharps, and sportswriters.

Oops.

Yep, except for 94th ranked Hawaii.

Do they fall from trees? Stanford Trees?

Mighty UCLA is now 33rd. What does that make LSU in transitive world?

We humans are all different, but if I were comparing the composites to you, I’d start with impassioned analysis, knowledge, and an actual understanding of football. Those would be some of the differences. The composites currently have the SEC first (and the Big 12 second, and Pac 12 fifth, after even the ACC) because of the games that have been played. You have the SEC first because you pull your opinions from places with a dearth of sunlight.

Should we keep this bookmarked still?

Let’s wait and see what the top end of the conferences do at the end of the year. Oregon got jobbed by bad officiating, btw.

I don’t care if the PAC-12 holds up anyway - I’m an SEC guy myself and our track record speaks for itself. What I can tell you now is that the Big12 can’t hang with the rest of the football world and we’ll see that as we get into December and January.
