And you have every right to be, at least in this case. I’m not familiar with Sanders, but Swank’s response doesn’t surprise me at all: he ran for election on a very thinly veiled “law and order” (aka “control the [uppities]”) platform. The fact that he won is further proof to me that Pierce County lives down to the worst qualities of its namesake.
(He’s also currently embroiled in a controversy because he doesn’t agree with the County Prosecutor — whom policy requires he use for legal advice — on immigration matters, so he’s trying to retain his own counsel.)
I didn’t miss it, I didn’t think it was particularly likely that any Chief or Sheriff would be making any public statement about this, supporting ICE or otherwise.
He’s a former social worker who ran against our previous sheriff, who got elected as an “independent”, then went hard MAGA in 2020 and was involved in multiple drunk driving incidents while in office. Since taking over he’s reformed a lot of county policies, prohibited deputies from wearing unauthorized decorations (Punisher skulls / thin blue lines etc.), and generally made it clear that chuds aren’t welcome in his department.
He’s really a breath of fresh air compared to the kind of sheriffs who think the county is their personal fiefdom.
Apparently, some FOP branches are purely fraternal organizations, and some branches serve as the police labor union for that city. In Chicago, for example, the Chicago FOP lodge has served as the labor union for the Chicago Police Department since 1981.
A New York Times story on the arrest of a suspect in the arson attack on a synagogue in Mississippi says
The man charged with arson for setting a fire that severely damaged the oldest and largest synagogue in Mississippi told investigators that he had targeted the site because of its “Jewish ties,” federal officials disclosed on Monday.
I admit to laughing at the mention of “Jewish ties.” I think there might be one or ten Jews associated with the synagogue.
I mean, to be honest, Hasidim have some amazing fashion sense. I recently watched an indie movie set in a Hasidic community in Brooklyn, where most of the actors were from the community, and I was in awe of their outfits and the payot some of them have managed to grow out.
I want one of those big fur hats, but I don’t think you can really carry it off without the whole ensemble. It wouldn’t go well with cargo pants and a Cubs t-shirt.
I used to wear a Ushanka - Wikipedia when I lived in cold country. Not quite the same as that fellow’s oh so stylish fur hat. But still nice. And dayum was it warm.
