Depending on your region, that could be updated to note that religion is the crystal meth of the people.
The father of a friend of mine, when I was growing up, was addicted to Atomic Fireball candies. He started on them as a replacement for the cigarettes that he was previously addicted to. While, of course, it’s best not to be addicted to anything, swapping cigs for cinnamon is a pretty good trade-up.
That would explain a lot of MAGAworld.
… kind of sounds like fun.
So, hon, when you see me walking around with yet another Twizzler hanging out of my mouth, just pretend that’s how I quit heroin.
The spice must flow!
Thank you for putting the idea that I now must hear Trump’s opinions of the Great Houses of the Landsraad, thank you so fucking much…
"These Fremen come up to me, big, strong Fremen, with tears coming out of their blue eyes, and they say “No one’s ever worn a stillsuit or rode a big worm like you, Muad’Dumb.”
Not my best work.
“I must not think. Thought is the mind-killer. Rationality is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will permit reality to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye, with tears in it, to see its path. When thought has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
“Did that sandworm just gag?”
This belongs here, even though Ulfrieda is not, AFAIK, in the news.
I was raised an American Baptist (not the batshit fundie side, regular ordinary Baptists), so I can speak for the inside view.
My best friend in grade school was/is an atheist. It kind of bothered me, that he was like a more decent person than I. We had the idea instilled in us that being a Christian was the only right way to be, you could not be a good person otherwise. Yet, here was a person who demonstrated to me that that teaching was wrong.
So the word you are alluding to is literally canon in religious circles. You are trying to twist us up by saying that we should not regard that type of otherer by the same metric with which they are othering us.
No, the those people attitude is wrong. And anyone who subscribes to that attitude deserves to be tarred with their own broad brush. Just fuck off with your “don’t abuse Christians for regarding non-Christians as lesser beings” bullshit. It is not working for us.
She also gave a “I’m getting in the last word and don’t plan on listening any more. Bye” response soon after.
I felt the need to vent.
I think her point was the unambiguous across-the-board demonization, the classification of followers of Christ as torturers, murderers, controllers. All of them. The Little Sisters of the Poor, MLK, we may assign evil motives to them all (my inferred examples).
It got really tiresome. It would never be permitted if directed at, say, Muslims, as someone pointed out. There’s plenty wrong with much of what claims to be Christianity, and that should be fair game. But there are those who actually follow Christ’s teachings, which is pretty woke stuff.
I think the “all of them” part is just an easy assumption to make when seeing what is going with a lot of religionists and their quest for power.
I see it in the same light as “ACAB”.
If you are a decent Christian, you should not be tolerating abuse of your religion. Really, I would hold Jew, Muslims, Hindus, et al, to the same standard – Christians are whom I am most exposed to today.
I do not care what you, or her or anyone else believes, even if that includes believing that I am a fetid sack of turds for not believing that thing. But do not countenance vile actions of other believers in the name of your faith – and “countenance” includes failing to repudiate.
I can understand that, but there was some pretty strenuous digging in of heels when called on it. Listen, I despise the MTGs of the world who pervert Christ’s message. Fuck those “Christians.” But there are those of us who find Christianity appealing because of, not in spite of, what Christ taught.
You can lead the humans to a mirror, but you can’t make them look.
I can only speak for myself, and I have and will continue to rebuke those who seek to claim a message they either reject or misunderstand completely. I do it regularly on this Board. I speculate that there are legions of Democratic voters who feel the same and have zero allegiance to the hypocrites who claim love for Jesus and shit all over everything he taught.
How many sects are there?
Now the fun part: Which ones, by name do we follow, and which ones, by name, do we say are false?
This “The real ones are the ones that follow Jesus” answer just isn’t working…and you should fucking know this by now.
Putting Ulfreida in this thread is ridiculous. She’s allowed to have her opinions, which happen to coincide with some of what she believes is the canon of her religion. Most people who are against abortion believe it’s taking a life, which in a sense it is. This is reinforced to them by their religion, but their belief isn’t because of the bible. Otherwise no Jews would be against abortion.
Pitting her is a dick move. While it’s annoying when people adhere to a religion which seems nonsensical to outsiders, it’s understandable how she feels under attack. Do I agree with her? No. So what?
Quite likely she would repudiate if she didn’t feel like she was under attack.
She’s a great poster and doesn’t deserve to be hounded out of here because of her religious views. You are going to make her leave and I wouldn’t blame her one bit.
