Omnibus Religious Fucks in the NEWS

I’d send them a $2 bill one year with a note attached. “Inflation.”

That’s not the issue, it’s not about the hospital’s own bread. What happened was, at one of the major hospitals they wanted to rule that visitors and patients cannot bring in bread. The government ruled against them. They tried to get around this ruling by “politely requesting” that guests don’t bring in bread but this was seen through as bullshit.

Now the backlash against the government for this ruling from the religious right may cause some of the religious right representatives currently in coallition to go crawling back to Bibi, which could be enough to topple the current government’s majority.

I, as a non-Jewish person, think that not only is God not fooled by this transparent chicanery, but this kind of “rules lawyering” perpetuates the “shyster lawyer” stereotype.

My Jewish friends tell me, nay, G_d wants us to look for loopholes. This is not only acceptable, but correct.

But it’s no skin off my nose.

You know what? Bigotry grounded in reality seems a lot better than than “Jews harvest the organs of children” or “Jews caused the black death” or “Jewish space lasers start wildfires.” I think I’m okay with that.

Your friends are correct that the Jewish relationship with God is at times adversarial. It’s essentially a binding legal contract, and both parties have obligations to fulfill.

There’s a great story in the Talmud that goes like this:

A bunch of rabbis are arguing a super technical point of law. All of them are in agreement but one. The lone rabbi begins performing miracles to prove his point, but the others are like, “what do a bunch of magic tricks have to do with the law?”

Eventually God himself speaks from the heavens and says, “Hey guys, this rabbi is pretty much my favorite and whatever he says goes.”

So what do the “wrong” rabbis do? They tell God that he has no special say in the interpretation of the law because it’s an earthly document and not a heavenly one. God not only concedes the point, but he’s delighted to have been proven wrong. The majority opinion stands.

In the joke based on this story, the punchline is, “Okay… so now it’s three votes for and two votes against.”

It’s not about loopholes. It’s about free will.

Here’s a longer take on the story.

It can be legitimately argued that if the word “blasphemy” can have meaning under the law, it’s a theocracy.

There are parts of Israel’s government that could lead one to describe it as a theocracy - for example, the way marriage is handled. But its “blasphemy” law would be one of the last.

Wikipedia has a decent summary:

Pastor arrested for putting tape over the mouths of chatty students.

A Louisiana pastor and headmaster of a Christian school who is also a member of the state’s Republican Party governing board and a former “Survivor” contestant

It’s like someone went onto a web site that randomly generates the backstory of a supervillain.

Bunch of lying-ass fucks and sex offenders.

Among the findings in the report was a previously unknown case of a pastor who was credibly accused of assaulting a woman a month after leaving the presidency of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention on Sunday released a major third-party investigation that found that sex abuse survivors were often ignored, minimized and “even vilified” by top clergy in the nation’s largest Protestant denomination.

And it’s the right-wingnuts that are all afraid that school teachers and Disney are trying to “groom” their kids. Their kids are much more likely to be abused by family and church than a trans-woman reading them a story in the school library.

Easy enough to understand if you treat “groom” as a code word for “speak the truth to.” They are convinced (and possibly rightly so) that if their children hear the truth about the objects of bigotry, they would be less inclined to carry on the bigotry indoctrinated into them by their parents.

Better to admit to adultery than rape, I guess.

I love how she told him off to his face:
“You are not the victim here.”
“Don’t look at me like that. You know the truth.”

I admire her for speaking out. Even though a bunch of men stood around her trying to intimidate her into silence. As Maggie Kuhn said, Speak the truth even if your voice shakes.

If he was married at the time, then it was adultery.

Kanakuk camper says she was told to apologize, denied call home after reporting abuse (msn.com)

Assaultees made to apologize to assaulter.

Without warning, Caroline said, Chancey brought the boy into the meeting to force reconciliation. She said the boy admitted he “may have” groped the girls, but Chancey wanted the girls to apologize to the boy for making the accusation.

Caroline said her friend was crying and acquiesced; Caroline refused.

She accused the boy of “lying in the eyes of the Lord.”

“We’re not bringing the Lord into this,” Chancey interrupted, according to Caroline.

“You brought in salvation and forgiveness, but we’re not bringing the Lord into this?

She probably wasn’t his only victim either. It will only be a matter of time before more step forward, IMNSHO.

The article mentioned 3 in the same incident.

We have to tread lightly with budding sociopaths.

“Despite collecting these reports for more than 10 years, there is no indication that (Oldham and Boto) or anyone else, took any action to ensure that the accused ministers were no longer in positions of power at SBC churches,” the report said.

I wish I was surprised.

The devil has been whispering in his ear and and guiding him for a long time.

“Pretty soon it will be women preachers, social justice, then racism, then [critical race theory], then victimization because the world is a ball and chain, and when you’re hooked, it will take you to the bottom. They hate the truth,” MacArthur said to a crowd that flipped, through the night, between pin-drop silence and cheers of “That’s true!”
