I was surprised by that at first, but then remembered what the confederate flag stands for and thought, oh yeah.

Supporters now include neo-Nazis, Canadian supporters of the former U.S. administration, QAnon conspiracy enthusiasts (including Romana Didulo, the self-declared monarch of Canada who has been investigated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for inciting her followers to violence), and some members of Canada’s Conservative Party and its extremist breakaway, the People’s Party of Canada.
While it may seem strange that Canadians rally behind a flag that was part of the dark and evil history of a completely different country, consider that there are assholes in America that rally behind a flag that was part of the dark and evil history of a completely different country (the Nazis).
It’s all part of the same fucked-up, bigoted hatred.

AIUI, the Canadian neo-Nazis and Conspiracy Theorists are the core of the movement, and they attracted non-fringe people who are just tired of the pandemic.
At some point, I think they (this cohort, regardless of from whence they come) should stop with the symbolism and proudly display the “MY DICK IS TINY AND MY IQ IS LOW” banner.

The Confederate flag has been adopted as a general symbol of defiance and rebellion internationally. I’ve seen mentions of it in Europe and Australia. Especially in parts of Europe, where I think the swastika is banned, the confederate flag has come to be its proxy.

I am also tired of this pandemic. (Is there anybody who isn’t tired of this pandemic?) I have however enough sense to know that honking horns at it isn’t going to make it go away.
Says you. And ‘scientists’ and Big Pharma. I’ve done my research, and I’ve found that honking horns is just as effective as drinking your own urine. WAKE UP, SHEEPLE!
Not to mention the fact that even if I’m tired of something to the point of discombobulation and severe bamboozlement, it does not reduce my aversion to marching with people waving Nazi flags. But perhaps I’m just too much of a stickler for not associating with genocidal racists. No doubt there are good people on both sides of not-genocidal-racism and genocidal racism.
The term “mass hysteria” comes to mind. But I think a crucial element is at play the world over. Maybe it is just part of human nature (not ALL humans) to get energized and feel pride in being a right asshole to someone else. That someone can be “the government” or authority in general, or “those people”. These various flags give these people a sense of belonging to the right asshole tribe, wherever it is and wherever the flag originated.
And by “right asshole” I don’t mean right wing politics, I mean in the usage of, “Why, he’s a right asshole, ain’t he?”
