Don’t people look for and try easy 2-3 mile long trails near home with very minor elevation changes first?
No, they go to the mountains.
Or, they do that 2-3 mile hike with gentle grades, and think that that means that they are ready to descend the Grand Canyon.
This is also a problem with Mt. Fuji. It doesn’t seem like a difficult climb, it is not that high, and it is easy to get to. So why would you need more than a light jacket to climb it? The reality is that you can get altitude sickness and the temperature near the peak can change and get down below freezing. It is not an easy hike and people die there every year even with the stations available at different levels of the mountain.

I had to read this twice. The first time through, I thought, “Wow, that must’ve been some epic disasters if she got the trails closed!”
“RCMP officers in Saanich, B.C., have identified 22-year-old twin brothers Matthew and Isaac Auchterlonie as the two armed bank robbers who were killed by police in a shootout on Tuesday.”
Even more baffling. What on earth were they thinking? Social media posts shows that at least one of them was into high powered weapons (posing on social media with them) and warfare.
But what was the plan? Did the daily diary look like this?
11:00 - Enter bank
11:00- 11:10 Rob bank
11:10 - 11:20 Wait for armed response team
11:20 - Firefight with armed response team
11:22 - die
I know eh? Why did they drive from Duncan to carry out their suicide plan? Maybe not enough cops in Duncan? Or maybe there is no ERT team? Did they imagine they could survive somehow? Most importantly, why???
It kind of reminds me of the 2019 murder spree by Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky which made no sense either.
It reminds me of the North Hollywood Shootout back in 1997. Maybe that’s all the recent SMFers were going for: death by infamy.
The Grand Canyon, since has been mentioned a lot just now, is having issues, the upshot of which seems to be “don’t drink the water”. Mostly the problem is affecting rafters, who are having a widespread norovirus outbreak. And in desert lands, you really, really want to avoid “the trots”.
I thought the same thing. From this link to CTV news:
“In one post that seems particularly troubling in retrospect, Auchterlonie shared clips from a documentary about the 1997 North Hollywood shootout, in which two heavily armed people robbed a bank and injured more than a dozen people during a 44-minute standoff with police.”
Those two at least had a plan to rob the bank and get away; They’d done it successfully a couple of times before.
These two though? Not known to police. No criminal record. No past history. (Other than a love of guns)
Hmmmmmm. One of the brothers now deleted instagram accounts had photos of weaponry, as well as anti-vax and anti-Trudeau comments. Also repost of pro-gun stuff from a right wing gun group.
Radicalized right wing terrorists?
This strikes me as quite repetitive.
more shit
Is this that “cancel culture” they’re so frightened of?
I’d cancel the parade entirely.
The mayor of Palm Bay, Florida celebrated Fourth of July by honoring an Iraq veteran who pled guilty to the murders of four Iraqi detainees.
Well, this makes sense. The GQP honors a convicted murderer, while at the same time shouting death threats against an honorable marine who served two tours in Iraq.
This is today’s Republican Party.
