The potatoes are only a small part of the state - and even there, they spend a lot of time hunting & it’s a very outdoorsy culture. A large quantity of the rest of the state is national forest. (also, hunting and outdoorsy)

Heh. Worked with a sys admin once that got pulled over by county deputies. He (and I) work for the county. He had been drinking and got off real lucky by being told he will be let off and just go home. Same deputy pulled him over later in the night. He told deputy that he better let him go or he would delete all of his information from the servers. He said this to the cop (and he could do it).
Next day he found his computer gone and a cardboard box on his desk.

Washington State is Alabama east of the Cascades (or seems that way).
Pretty much every state in the union, even CA & NY, are really Alabama out in the countryside once you get the population density low enough.
And that’s the real problem: we have 50 states composed of cities & suburbs, and a different 50 states composed of all the out-counties
Which makes seceding really hard.
