It’s been suggested that it is due, at least in part, to the influence of a well-known image titled “The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife” in a collection of erotica published in Japan in the early 19th Century, which in turn may have been inspired by a popular legend of a shell diver stealing back a pearl from a sea-god. At any rate, it dates back over 200 years.
I think in a way, it allows shy and sexually repressed people to like rape scenes. The tentacled creature is alien and therefore doesn’t have human values. In its own world, aggressive sex is expected and appreciated. The schoolgirl who’s usually the recipient of tentacle interaction is a Japanese sex symbol, and the experience becomes intricate and exotic, rather than dirty and gross.
Or maybe it just looks cool.
If you’re going to pull a murder/suicide, there are much better locations than in the cab of a moving big rig on an Interstate highway.

Tentacle porn isn’t really my thing, but I come across it occasionally in sci-fi romance. Many times there is clear consent and the eroticism is more about restraint. I’d wager there’s a cultural context here, like American tentacle porn might have different connotations.
